We had a fantastic day out with Kim. From the timely pickup (I know our hotel wasn't the best known place) to the dropoff, it was all smooth and well planned. We visited all points of interest in Hahoe area with Kim's story telling of the folk village, the village viewpoint and the Confucian Academy - two UNESCO world heritage sites on one day - with plenty of time to browse the town and the museum on our own . Kim also treated us to local apple bread and encouraged us to order soy sauce chicken/ mackerel combo for lunch, which we didn't get a chance to do anywhere else during our trip to South Korea after so we are glad we did. Not to mention his safe driving from 7:30am to basically 8pm. When you spend that much time together in a car, you get into a somewhat intimate or private conversation about somewhat intimate or private topics like family choices, politics, even religion. I'm sure Kim wouldn't have forced us into those convos, but seeing our openness (my husband is actually keen to talk about these things) Kim shared a lot of his perspectives on the topics, which was very interesting and insightful. It was a meaningful day out for us.

Itinerary
Tourist can walk and feel real old traditional village where still remain an old culture and traditional Korean houses. This delightful traditional riverside village – a Unesco World Heritage site – is a place to commune with the traditional fabric of old Korea and, in the busy months, with large crowds of visitors. Avoid the weekends, go off-season and be rewarded with a glimpse of bucolic enchantment and the gentle rhythms of countryside village life.
Buyongdae is a cliff about 64 meters high situated where the Taebaeksan Mountain Range ends. From the summit, one can get a bird’s-eye-view of Hahoe Village in Andong. The name was taken from an ancient history of China. Meaning lotus, the name Buyongdae is said to be given for Hahoe Village’s configuration like a lotus flower. Thus, one can get the best view of the village from the cliff. Located near Buyongdae are Ogyeonjeongsa House, Gyeomamjeongsa House, and Hwacheon Seowon Academy.
Hahoe Mask Museum is located in Andong Hahoe Village, which is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Important Folklore Material No. 122. Hahoe Village is a representative traditional Korean folk town and is the home of the Hahoe Mask (National Treasure No. 121) and the Byeolsin Gut Mask Dance (Important Intangible Cultural Properties No. 69). The museum not only displays Hahoe masks, but also other traditional masks from all over the world. The museum consists of five permanant exhibition halls and one special exhibition hall, housing a wide range of masks from all over the world along with Hahoe masks. The museum also offers activity programs such as wearing a mask, mask trick art, photo zone, and more.
Byeongsanseowon is a Confucian school that was established by esteemed Confucian scholars to pay tribute to the memory of Seong-nyong Yu (1542-1607), who was well-respected for his writings and personality. His mortuary tablet is enshrined at this school. Around the time of 1863, Confucian schools enjoyed many freedoms under the Joseon rule, students and scholars of the school were exempt from taxation and other expenses. Byeongsan Seowon was one of 47 places in all of Korea and 2 in Andong not destroyed during the rule of Daewongun [Politician of Joseon Imperial family, 1820 ~ 1898] in 1868. The Nakdong-gang River is situated just in front of the Confucian Academy. Cross the river and the Byeongsan Mountain can be found. By forming a folding screen like shape around the academy, the mountains both protect and add a serene beauty to the area.

Very interesting scenery, history and stories. Excellent storytelling by a very experienced guide. A must visit but prepare for the walk.
Our full-day tour to Andong was outstanding from start to finish. Our guide Jimmy was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. He handled everything seamlessly, tailored everything to our pace making a very long day stress-free and enjoyable. He kept us engaged with interesting history and perfect timing throughout the day. His flexibility, attention to detail, and genuine care made us feel safe and well taken care of. Truly a 5-star experience — it felt like a day spent with a friend who knows everything about the country!
it is a long drive form Seoul, so be prepared to have a drive for .5 hours. we did it private, so it was fine
Nice place to visit but it is a long way from Seoul so be prepared for a long day. Trip was nice in a very good car. Our guide was a former military officer and we had a lot of good discussions. His English was very good. Overall a very good experience. We had lunch of Mackerel that was delicious and local apples that are out of this world good. Great day in andong.
Kim Chan Soo was a great guide! He was knowledgeable, friendly, and went out of his way to help us. We would highly recommend seeing Hahoe!
Long trip but very interesting. Very delicious lunch. The guide (Jimmie) spole very good English and could answer all our questions.
Very interesting experience and very good driver and guide. Good for all ,confortable the car. Friendly
Jimmy is a knowledgeable and easy going guide who has a very comfortable people mover van for napping on the way home. I had lots of questions about Korean life and history which he was able to answer. Going to these tourist spots in winter meant we had the places almost to ourselves, just dress warmly and wear good walking shoes in case of ice.
The trip was great. Very interesting and some beautiful scenery. Very serene. Our guide, Shane, was very accommodating to our needs and was very informative. Communication leading up to the trip and during the trip was excellent.
Going to Andong-so going there requires a long car drive- and Jimmy made the ride exceptional. He’s easy to talk to and great at explaining the history of the area. The time flew by! The Vilkage was serene and charming.. it was a gorgeous fall day so I really enjoyed walking around! Perfect day in Seoul ❤️
Very interesting (and long) day trip from Seoul. Benny Kim was our driver and guide for the day and he was great. Full of explanations and facts about Korea in general and about Hahoe village in particular, as well as extremely caring and diligent. It was a real pleasure & chance to have him!
Had a great tour in Andong huge thanks to my guide Shane. I would highly recommend booking this tour.
Despite being a long drive from Seoul, Mr Kim maximized the best parts of the trip. We viewed Andong Village from a high cliff and enjoyed the topography of the entire UNESCO site. We loved the restaurant he took us to and ate like Koreans. Visiting the village enhanced our appreciation for Korean History. He introduced us to a visiting renounced Korean Scholar who has lineage to the families of Village and heard more stories of this historic site. Mr. Kim pointed out the tree planted by Queen Elizabeth II. We visited an old school house that had beautiful views. This would have been a distraction for me if I were a student. Mr. Kim catered to our love of history. This tour is a must to visit. Thank you Mr. Kim for taking good care of us during the trip.
We had a full and fulfilling day with BJ. Everything ran like clockwork from the hotel pick-up to our early evening return. It is a long drive to Hahoe Village from Seoul, 3 - 3.5 hours with heavy traffic, but it was easy to relax and enjoy the incredible scenery. BJ is a great conversationalist, sharing information on Korean history and personal anecdotes that made the time fly. We appreciated that he understood our preference for a lighter lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the local place he took us to. I truly felt privileged to have been a patron when I learned that the restaurant sees few Americans. The stops - cliff overlook, Confucian Academy, Village, and Mask Museum met all expectations. Fascinating peek into Korean life as it was and still is in this living historical village. This was an area I had researched as a DIY venture, but the logistics on public transport were more than I wanted to undertake. The tour was perfect - all transport was personalized and BJ’s excellent guiding provided so much more than we could have experienced on our own. I highly recommend Outdoors Korea for tours to Hahoe - and ask for BJ!!
Jimmy is great! You should definitely take this tour with him! He tells you a lot about the culture and history but also gives you a little time to yourself to explore the site.
Something for all ages. We had a large family group and we were able to create forever memories together. Benny (our guide) is incredible. So friendly and informative. There are too many images to describe. I can wholeheartedly recommend this tour.
We got to experience Andong Hahoe village with our driver BJ. This was our favorite day in Korea and we got to learn so much about Korea. BJ did a great job explaining the cultural significance of the village and showing us where to get the best traditional food. We also learned a lot about BJ and he was a patient driver with such a long day. If you are looking to experience old Korea we strongly suggest this. We have a whole new respect for the country and their heritage after spending the day with BJ. We went on a weekday and this was helpful as crowds were very minimal.
Kim is very wise and did a fantastic job. I requested a private tour because I have elderly Korean parents who I wanted to bring back to their homeland. I am Korean American don't speak Korean well and I brought my fifteen year old daughter. Kim kept the tour very interesting and he has so much experience working with people from all over the world. I so appreciate all that he did for us! Andong is very beautiful and well worth the trip!
"My family and I had an incredible experience with our tour guide - BJ -His extensive knowledge about the history, culture, and local attractions was truly impressive.. His professionalism and attention to detail made the tour seamless and enjoyable. I learned so much and felt well taken care of throughout the journey. Highly recommended!"
It was great! Very knowledgeable and friendly! We enjoyed every moment of it and we definitely would recommend him to everyone looking for a tour! Thanks! The Rivera Family!!
Our guide was very helpful and knowledgeable, about our tour and the life and history of Korea in general. Andong village is a unique and interesting destination. The surrounding countryside on the journey there is beautiful.
3 hrs travelling from Seoul. But worth it. Good view of the village from the cliff, have good lunch before we tour around the village.
I booked the private Tour to Andong village so I could learn more about Korean history and cultural background. Even though the drive there from Seoul is long, I never felt bored thanks to Mr. Kim being such an interesting and entertaining person to talk to. Thanks to him I learned even more about South Korea than I would have if I had just seen the village by itself. I greatly enjoyed having a typical Andong style meal, walking through the village, visiting the Confucian academy and the mask museum. I would greatly recommend this tour to anyone interested in South Korea’s history and culture!
We had an amazing tour with Mr. Benny Kim! He was such a professional and an amazing tour guide. He picked us up early, drove well, and took us to a nice local restaurant in Andong and the best spots in Hahoe village and Byeongsan-Seowon. He also took a lot of great photos of us and answered so many of my questions. It was a really long drive from Seoul but he made it easy and fun. We had a lot of great conversations with him and I feel like I got to know him and Korea better through this tour. I couldn’t recommend him enough. Thank you so much for taking us around in Andong!
My friend and I loved the view of and walking tour through Hahoe Village. We also enjoyed a delicious lunch at a family restaurant featuring locally sourced fish and produce.
Guide was punctual on arrival and extremely initiative in reaching out to contact us prior to the trip (e.g. hotel pickup, days to avoid traffic etc). A great and safe driver, the journey was smooth and enjoyable. He is also well-versed in English and is knowledgeable about Korean history and culture. The place we visited was scenic and beautiful, definitely worth a visit! Plus point: the guide takes really nice photos and he will send it to you promptly after the trip:) Will definitely contact Outdoors Korea for future trips.
It was a really great day trip. We had a private excursion. The guide was nice and interesting. I recommend it for sure!
Mr. Kim is a warm person who is eager to do a good job and teach things to his clients/tourists. We spent a fantastic day in his company. We discovered a beautiful, typical village, the Confucian school... We highly recommend this activity!
