I may be partial to The Oyster Box hotel but for good reason and tonight's experience was yet another reminder. It was my son's birthday and to say they went beyond the call of duty is an understatement! We always feel Durban is underwhelming compared to Cape Town's hospitality level. But the Oyster Box? That's next level. Our dietary needs were well catered for, a table beautifully prepared with staff personally welcoming my son by name. That personal touch, the feeling of being a valued guest is what makes it memorable. We remember how people make us feel. The food was on point, that fish curry in their buffet is what keeps me returning! After dinner my son was surprised, courtesy of the hotel, with a platter of cake slices complete with sparkles! An unforgettable evening, Oyster Box truly deserving of best hotel in Africa accolade in World's Best Awards 👏🏼

The Oyster Box. Umhlanga. The iconic hotel that everyone dreams of staying at. The place with the red and white stripes. The lighthouse. The Indian Ocean views. The "five-star magic" that people rave about . I went. I saw. I left feeling like I'd been sold a dream. The Vibe: The building is beautiful. The location is stunning. The views are breathtaking. And that's where it ends. The magic, as people call it, seems to be a trick—you walk in expecting excellence, and you get a place that's coasting on its own hype. The Service: I've heard the stories. The attentive staff, the friendly smiles, the impeccable service . But here's the thing—when you're paying the kind of money you pay at The Oyster Box, you shouldn't need to gamble on good service. It should be the baseline. It's like a 5-star hotel with 3-star service and a 6-star price tag. The Price: And the price. The price is eye-watering. Prices start at $459 a night, which is roughly R8,500 . That's not a hotel stay. That's a mortgage. For that kind of money, I expect magic. I expect to be treated like royalty. I expect the staff to remember my name. I expect the service to be flawless. What I got was… fine. Just fine. The Food: You can pay R1,500 a head for a whisky and food pairing . That's not a meal. That's a week's rent. And when you're paying that, you want to be wowed. The Bottom Line: Two stars. One for the view. One for the building. The service, the food, the price... none of it adds up. The Oyster Box, you are an icon. And you're coasting. You think you're five stars? You're not. You're a five-star view with a three-star experience and a six-star bill. It's a shame. It's a beautiful building. And it's a beautiful disappointment.
What an incredible five days at The Oyster Box. From the moment we arrived until the day we reluctantly departed, every aspect of our stay was exceptional. The property itself is beautiful, the food was outstanding, and the service was truly world-class. What stood out most, however, was the genuine warmth and dedication of the team, who made our stay so memorable. A special thank you to Julian(Concierge), to Sanele at the Lighthouse Bar, thank you for your wonderful service and warmhospitality. Andile Khumalo - F&B Supervisor, consistently made every breakfast experience special. The Spa team provided a truly relaxing and rejuvenating experience, while Siya looked after us so wonderfully at the delicious Curry Buffet. Richard was always friendly, approachable, and eager to assist. A heartfelt thank you also to the beautiful housekeeping team who kept our room immaculate and provided such thoughtful and elegant turndown service each evening. And of course, the pool staff deserve special recognition for keeping us hydrated, comfortable, and thoroughly pampered throughout our stay. The Oyster Box has undoubtedly mastered the art of supreme client-centric hospitality. Every team member made us feel valued, welcomed, and cared for. Five days of absolute pampering, great food, exceptional service, and unforgettable memories. Thank you all for making our stay so special. We cannot wait to return. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Lushane and Jade Abrahans
Stayed there in May this year and was shocked at the complete change in atmosphere and service with the staff. Rooms are also way overpriced and badly maintained. What once was a world class hotel now has the service levels of the holiday inn. General Manager sends a standard chat gpt apology. A terrible pity.
My recent day visit to The Oyster Box in uMhlanga, Durban, was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment you arrive, the hotel reflects timeless elegance, warm hospitality, and attention to detail that truly sets it apart. The iconic setting overlooking the ocean, combined with its classic charm, creates an atmosphere that is both luxurious and welcoming. Attending an event at the hotel further highlighted its strength as a premier venue. The organization, service standards, and seamless coordination were impressive, making it an ideal choice for corporate gatherings, networking events, and high-profile meetings. Every element—from the setup to the service—was handled with professionalism and care. What stood out most was the genuine hospitality of the team, ensuring every guest felt valued and comfortable throughout the experience. The Oyster Box is not just a hotel—it’s a destination that delivers memorable experiences, whether for leisure or business. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Durban or planning a special event.
