About Activity
On this 3-hour tour, we'll explore the Pukará de Quitor, a 12th-century defensive fortress of the Atacama culture, located 3 km from San Pedro de Atacama. Spanning 2.5 hectares, this strategically positioned site is protected by natural ravines and walls. Constructed using stones and mud mortar, it stands as an impressive testament to ancient engineering atop a steep hill. Situated within the Ayllu of Quitor, part of the Atacama Community of Coyo, this historic settlement was once home to 200 people who initiated desert domestication 2,500 years ago. Its circular mud dwellings and thatched roofs contribute to its status as one of San Pedro de Atacama's most remarkable archaeological sites.
