So freakin cold! 🥶 you need to make sure you have winter clothes on and even then if you go as soon as they open…. Because they opened like an hour later than it says. It is so unbelievably cold. It’s pretty far but I’m glad we got up at 3am so we could wait an hour out side the gate for them to open 😜😂. In atacama people opened and xlosed on their own schedule 😁. We seen alpacas or they could be a different breed, pink flamingos and donkeys on our way back from El Tatio. So that was a nice suprise.

Itinerary
Your tour starts with hotel pickup by van before dawn — yep, that's early! — from San Pedro de Atacama. The hotel pickup starts from the Hotels located nearby San Pedro de Atacama urban zone. We will drive north of San Pedro de Atacama to El Tatio, an approximate 1.5- to 2-hour trip. The El Tatio Geyser Field stands just over 14,000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains of northern Chile and getting there is half the fun. You’ll travel up windy scenic mountain roads surrounded by snow-covered active and dormant volcanic peaks along the way. Magma beneath the surface acts to heat an underground source of water resulting in an explosive release of pressure.
Your arrival at the geyser field coincides with the rising sun, which gives the geysers their most spectacular appearance. In the cold, early morning air of sunrise, each geyser is topped with a white column of steam that disappears when the temperature warms up. You have about two hours to walk around the field, marveling at the geothermal wonders and taking pictures. Then enjoy a light breakfast that typically includes a ham and cheese sandwich, biscuit, fruit, juice, tea and coffee. After about three hours total at El Tatio, head back toward San Pedro de Atacama, stopping in the village of Machuca.
You have about an hour here to explore the very tiny village (about 10 residents) at your leisure, checking out its wooden church, handful of adobe houses with thatch roofs, and artisan shop. If you wish, try a llama empanada, the local specialty (own expense). Finally, make the drive back to San Pedro de Atacama.
Finally, make the drive back to San Pedro de Atacama, where your tour ends with hotel drop-off around midday. Remember that this trip takes approximately 3 hours to get back to San Pedro de Atacama.

The tour is filled with some boring stops, only the geysers are fine, also not very beautiful. Guide is a very nice lady.
Amazing trip. Had to wake up early, but it was absolutely worth it. The geysers at sunrise were incredible and the landscapes felt surreal. The guides were friendly and everything was well organised. Definitely one of the highlights of our Atacama trip and highly recommended for anyone visiting San Pedro de Atacama.
The Geysers are an incredible experience. For some reason though we were combined into a tour provide by another operator (not Atacama Connection) and the tour guide could have been better- it was really difficult to understand what was said.
Great mesmerising experience with an excellent guide who was informative, funny and supportive.
Dress warmly and in layers. It will be very cold prior to sunrise at 14,000 ft (4.3 km). It warms up by breakfast time. The geyser area is COLD. But worth it…sunrise is magical. The rest of the tour has amazing scenery, wildlife and volcanic formations. Highly recommend.
Of all the places we visited while in the Atacama Desert, this was the most disappointing and the only one we would have skipped, in retrospect. The geysers are just not that interesting. If you have seen geysers at, for example, Yellowstone or Iceland, the ones at Tatio really pale by comparison. Also, the trip is long and uncomfortable. The ride there and back is very long on some very poor roads. Plus, while we were prepared for it to be cold, it was not just cold, but below freezing, and several people on the tour were very uncomfortable.
Good tour, we chose English option and guide spoke very good English. Answered all of our questions. The whole trip went smooth and to expectations. Would recommend to others
must visit , we had perfect weather , breakfast was okay not the best we had so far with others agencies but overall good use of half day
Amazing guide and tour. The geysers were breath taking. It was worth the early start though it was extremely cold and very high altitude. The breakfast was world class. Thank you to Rodrigo.
I had hard times to be quiet frankly. First I wasn't aware for the temp to be so low it felt like minus 12 degrees celsius. I felt like the guide had connection to some of the group and I felt like I wasnt one of them. Its starts at 5 a.m because the geysers workd only in these hours. Its 4200 meters above sea level and its extreamly windy so come prepared! Use thermic cloth, as a long traveller i saw many geysers around the world and i wasnt impressed at all to be honest. The scenary along the drive is nice. They cahrged extra 15 usd to enter to park so keep in mind in cash in CLP currency. Breakfast was good.
It’s a really early start and the road to the geysers is bumpy at times, it was also really cold - minus 11 Celsius - because it’s so high up, so you need to wrap up warm. But it’s all definitely worth it to see this extraordinary sight. Stefanie, our guide, was excellent in explaining the different types of geysers and their activity. Great breakfast provided as well. Try to stay out of the minibus long enough to see the sun rise ovér the mountains, some of the best photos came then as the sunlight came through the steam from the geysers. We think a guided tour is a good idea for this visit because of the distance, the time you have to set out and the state of the roads, as well as the information that you get with a guide that you don’t get as a self drive visitor.
Anita was a great guide, you could feel that she lives for that and enjoys what she does every minute. We were exploring more than expected and also stopped at different viewpoints. Having breakfast with a view was great, it only lacked on vegan options, which is the only negative point of the trip.
Pablo was a great guide, he was knowledgeable and shared a lot of interesting information. He was trying to guide using 3 different languages so he was very busy going from group to group to repeat details. He did a great job at this except on the bus as he was at the front and we were at the back. The late breakfast was fantastic. Nicely set out on a table with a mountain view. Fresh scrambled eggs and coffee were prepared as well as breads, jams, fruit, meat and cheese. It was really great. The biggest downfall of this trip was the driver. He was driving way too fast for the (washboard) road conditions and we did not feel like he was always in control. We have him clocked at doing 87MPH. I said to another in the group that on the way out I felt like there were a few times that all 4 tires were off the ground, and their response was "I think you are right". On the return trip at one point the big travel van actually slid around a corner towards the huge cliff. Everyone gasped. I don't stress easy in a vehicle but I definitely felt unsafe with this driver.
never imagined such unique feature of nature however it’s very cold -10 degree at 4800 meter altutude
Fabi and Pedro were great company to see the amazing sites with. Pedro's engeijing personality added to the whole experience.
We had our own hire car and did an early morning drive up to El Tatio - we left San Pedro at 04.30 and arrive at El Tatio at 06.15 when it was just starting to get light. The c80km drive is hairy especially after the first 25 km. You need to be pretty confident to drive in the dark on the sometimes very rough and stoney road - it’s well signposted so that is not an issue. There are some sharp curves and some very steep parts of the road which you really only see when you return in daylight. Lots of white tour vans do this trip every day so you start getting overtaken by them 10-20 km before your destination. Ideally get behind another car and drive 80-100 metres behind them as they will show you the road and the odd bad pothole. Geysers are good in the early morning because the air temperatures are below freezing - around minus 5C on the day we visited though soon warms up as the sun rises. The geysers and surrounding scenery are beautiful - worth the trip but my wife would say take a tour the next time. We spend about 2 hours at the geysers. We stopped off at the Puritama hot springs at 09.30 on way home - the timings worked very well - book you tickets for hot springs in advance. We just paid at entrance for El Tatio geysers.
I took this excellent tour with Turismo Layana and the terrific guide was Christian. It was a very early predawn pick up and the company sent a text the night before confirming the pick up time from my hotel. It was over an hours drive out to the site of the geysers where the altitude was approximately 4,000m. The varied geysers were amazing and while standing beside bubbling boiling water and with many layers of clothing, warm hat and gloves, it was still extremely cold. We also made a stop at wetlands in crater lakes with an abundance of bird life including flamingos and even vicuñas ( relative of lamas) coming to have a drink. Such an amazing experience. Breakfast was set up on a table on another isolated stop out in the desert. We could make bread rolls with avocado, ham and cheese and tea/coffee and cake. We arrived back at San Pedro de Atacama about 11.30am after a totally unique experience
We didn't do a formal tour, we did self drive. The general view is that you should try to get to the geyser field at dawn and we did that. It was definitely worth it. The sight of the sun rising over the surrounding peaks as the fumaroles smoke and the geysers bubble is fantastic. The colours are spectacular as are the sounds of the bubbling and hissing. Things to be aware of: you need to buy a ticket online beforehand, and the website isn't the easiest to use; it's a reasonably long drive so you need to leave plenty of time; if you're not comfortable driving on ungraded dirt roads with a lot of narrow points and twists and turns, in the dark, take a tour; it's cold before dawn at high altitude, very cold! Most of these are obvious but a lot of people we saw seemed unprepared and it's such an amazing place it'd be a pity to not enjoy it for want of a pair of gloves! On the way back to San Pedro watch out for the flamingos and the amazing giant cacti. You may also like to combine your return trip with a visit to Puritama, a nice way to warm up and relax after the early start.
The guide was knowledgeable about the geysers and area. Sebastion, our guide did a good job answering questions. We stopped at other interesting sites on the way back. I live only a few hours from Yellowstone National Park in the USA, so the El Tatio Geysers themselves were not impressive.
Very well organized, layra was our guide. Coordinated everything from 4 am Wake up call through the stops.
Wonderful experience! Ivan, Layra and the rest of the Horizonte team were extremely communicative (English speaking guides available), knowledgeable and professional regarding our tour. My husband and I even learned a thing or 2 about geysers. The company provided us a list of things we needed the day prior (I.e. extra layer of clothes!) and communicated everything via WhatsUp. We ran into Ivan the following day while on another tour, and he offered to take our picture (Thanks Ivan! You’re the best!). We would highly recommend this tour and company to others!
Great tour! Early start but worth it. Our guide Ivan was accommodating and well versed in the local area and scientific knowledge pertaining to the geysers. He and his team had a great energy and kept the tour interesting. We stopped at El Tatio, spent a few hours, then had breakfast prepared by our tour guides, followed by a stop at the wetlands to see the vicuña and flamingos. Breathtaking views of volcanoes and the borders of Bolivia.
Worthwhile experience. Highly recommend. Worth getting on a tour bus at 5 AM. Only complaint is the lack of legroom on the bus. I think my knees are visibly bruised as a result.
We visited El Taito in early January. The sun appeared above the mountain peaks at 7.30. That's why we arrived at six. The journey from San Pedro takes over an hour, is very narrow road, winding and full of holes. Prepare for a small delay at the entrance. Admission is paid, and the procedure is rather complex. Followed by 3 km to the parking lot. There are paths in the geyser field. It is dangerous to walk outside the roads. Expect breathing difficulties, it is at an altitude of 4300 m. You see the geysers at dawn. It's a beautiful sight. Then the sun rises above the mountain peaks. Direct rays hit the geysers. They literally explode and are very active for a short time. It won't take long and will calm down soon. That is why it is so important to be there at this very moment. Calculate the sunrise minus one hour, and this is the right time to reach the parking lot. Llamas graze between geysers and pools of hot water. There is also a swimming pool with the possibility of swimming. But we didn't try. Around eight o'clock buses arrive with tourists and that was the moment when we thought of returning. The best of the day is over.
It was an OK tour with a big bus, so it took longer to pick up all in the morning. (Would be better not to pick up considering the amount of persons,《30 )The guide was also OK, but nothing more. So if you like an average tour this is the One!
This was a tour where I think the drive was more interesting than the actual destination. Our tour guide was great, pointing out animals and naming volcanos. The geysers were interesting but at the cold temp and early hours, it might have been more for enthusiasts. The hot spring was small and crowded with obnoxious people. Not our favorite part.
Slipping into roughly 70 degrees f in the largest geothermal field in the southern hemisphere is a must do. But, at 6am beware that it is minus 5 ish when you come out. It's bloody freezing!!! Best tip is to leave your provided hotel towel by the side of the pool on top of your clothes. Dry your upper body and put 2 layers on BEFORE stepping out of the pool.
Going to the geysers is a beautiful way to spend the morning and well worth the early wakeup call. We had a great guide (Jorge) who gave us interesting information about the geysers and the area. The tour was well-organized with a good vehicle and good driver. We saw a lot of wildlife on the way back. My only complaint was the breakfast - there wasn't enough hot water for everyone on the tour.
The trip was very nice. We were picked up on time. On the way we could see a very stary sky and we found it a pitty that we couldn't stop to see it better than from the window. We got to see the Geysirs in a beautiful light around the sunrise. It was much colder than expected, but the tour operator prepared a breakfast with hot tea and coffee for us. It's an interesting thing to do when akready in San Pedro but don't forget your winter cloths.
I was skeptical at first. 5:30 seemed like a late pickup time for viewing the sunrise, and the guide seemed a little cheesy. But it ended up being a great trip! The guide was knowledgeable and multilingual. The bus was comfortable and clean. The geysers are stunning in the pre-dawn light, making for lovely photos. Breakfast was hot grilled bread, ham and cheese for those who wanted it, instant coffee, black tea, or coca tea (or crumble up the coca leaves in your black tea). We stopped a couple more times for pretty views and wildlife (ducks, other birds, guanacos, flamingos). The stop in Machuca didn't feel strictly necessary given how tiny it is, but it was nice to have a tea and walk around, and there is kind of a cool little garden walk with names and paintings of various local birds that I enjoyed with a couple other folks from the tour. I imagine also that tourism is a major source of income for the town. We got back to San Pedro at noon. All in all, a great day!
Waking up at 4 am and driving to the mouth of the volcano and witnessing the geysers from total darkness to brightness when they nearly disappear was mesmerizing. The tour service exceeded all expectations of comfort, timeliness and quality of breakfast cooked there..
As a group of four friends, we rented a car and slept about 40 minutes drive from El Tatio geysers. (Use iOverlander to find great spots to camp out). This gave us a good adventage of being ahead of all the tours and some extra sleep. You really should be at Tatio before the sunrise (wear all your warm clothes). It's magical when you arrive in a complete darkness and witness the sunrise. There are tours, but we didn't notice them much. All tours leave about 9am and then you can have the place for yourself to have breakfast in a sunshine (bring a stove ;) to have hot tea & coffee). Then you definitely have to bath in the hot pool, which is amazing! Enjoy your geysers :)
The good: Great tour operators, they were at our hostel within the time window upon pick up, and they were friendly and talkative/informative throughout the day. The experience itself was a (figurative) blast, and the provided breakfast was much better than we expected. It hit the spot on the cold morning, as well as the pool after the gysers, The not-so-good: The seats in the bus are crammed together and don't provide a lot of room. The tour is a tad expensive for what you get, considering that you still have to pay the park fees as well.
LOVED this tour - so amazing and a must do in San Pedro. We used Cosmo Andino travel and they were very responsive and professional (although overpriced - but you are paying for comfort-response time etc). yummy breakfast provided, tour of geysers and other views-landscapes on the way back to San Pedro.
We did tour on march 30th. At 5am we where picked up at our hotel and picked the other guests. We were transported in a bus to the geysers. Underway we were getting instructions -by our (great) guide Gustavo- about the program and the sight (both Spanish and English) Once there we get info about the geysers and had some free time. Note that in the morning it (can) get -7 to -10 degrees Celsius!! After a nice breakfast in the sun we went back to San Pedro and underway we stopped at the Village, at a swamp, stopped for lamas, flamengos, vicugñas and also twice for a great lookout. We were back in the hotel at around 12:30pm. *Note that the entrance fee has doubled! 10.000 per person for foreigners, I think now 6000 for people from Chile.

Everything you could expect from the description. Just be aware that, at that altitude and before dawn, the air temp is below zero.

We arrived here at dawn when the sun was rising over the mountains, the mist was hanging in the air. Despite an early start from our hotel, the parking lot was full. We were lucky to see the geysers since the site was closed due to bad weather a few days. When it opened, every hotel had vans, travellers had their vehicles there at dawn. An amazing phenomenon!
One of the most beautiful things u can see! Just do it! If u get a good tour (company: flamingo) u can see the geyser whilethe sun is rising up.

This was less impressive than the salt flat day tour. They specified early morning start to enjoy the sunrise but that didn't happen. When the sun rose we were asleep in the bus. We could've started the tour at 9am and it wouldn't make any difference. Also too little time for photos with llamas

The geysers themselves were very interesting but not so exciting as ones that we had seen elsewhere in the world.

Overall the tour was a great day out with a super guide who spoke really good English. I would go on it again as we saw some wonderful country.

I provided the pick up address 2months in advance, and reconfirmed this and the pick up time 48 hours before the tour. But despite getting up at 03:15 the bus did not turn up. The Chile enquiry number would not answer when we tried 15 mins after the agrred time, until eventually 30 mins later someone answered who was working from home and based in Santiago. They said they could not find the booking snd slso was unable to contact a different local company tgat was actually providing the tour. We shall see what happens now. So far quite unimpressed by losing a day of holiday.

The bus was uncomfortable. The geysers were good, but the breakfast was not. The village was disappointing. It is too long and not really worth it for those who have seen Yellowstone park or other geysers.

This was a fine tour, and the people contractor Touristour were great. But there was little value added beyond the transit to get to these places, and that's what you're paying for with one exception, which I'll note on that tour's review. Our bus broke down on the way there, so we missed the geysers at dawn. But the company brought substitute transport as soon as possible and was good spirited about it all I can't see blaming them for one of those things that happens. Anyway, though, if you have time and resources to rent a 4WD instead, you would be well advised to do so.

Collected on time, and our guide was very pleasant. We were not rushed thru the geyser area, and he took time to explain different features along the way in both spanish and English. The hot pool was disappointing, only really tepid, with a few warm spots.

The tour operator was great. The reason I can only give this one star is that purchasing the trip through this website is way more expensive than purchasing through the same operator on their website. I learned this after the fact and regret the purchase.

A wonderful experience at the Tatio Geysers! The landscape is impressive, but what really made the morning unforgettable was the tremendous team in charge. Camila and Juan Pablo were two exceptional guides: both super friendly, approachable, and passionate, complementing each other perfectly to explain everything to us and attentive to every detail of the group. Also, a round of applause for Juan Carlos, who at the wheel gave us an impeccable and very safe trip. You can tell the care, commitment, and good vibes they put into their work. We left happy. Highly recommended 100%.
Beautiful experience. Punctual team, Davi, Mauro, and Soraia were excellent.
Camilla and Daniel are very friendly and friendly guides. Let's explain everything in the geyser constitution We have a rich breakfast after the first stop before going to Machuca village. Thank you both very much.
Of the tours in Atacama this was my favorite. Lili reinforced the safety protocols for the group at all times and guided the tour with great respect for the places visited, Paolo helped us to identify the fauna with an illustrated guide and extra indications, my husband and I took advantage too much, even though the stop in Machuca is super quick (20min). My tip is wearing warm shoes and several layers of socks, snowboots are NOT an exaggeration for this ride. The use of the bathrooms in Machuca is paid but can be paid by card in the local restaurant.
