The guide was knowledgeable and we learned a lot. Be prepared for a fairly rugged walk to and from the pyramid.

The best way to visit the Cañada de la Virgen is with an expert guide. Along the way, we will share our knowledge of cultures of the Bajio region, including the Otomi people and other Mesoamerican cultures. After visiting the Welcome Center, we will walk a total of approximately 3 kilometers (2 miles) together, taking the same path as the ancients. We will show you recent discoveries at the archaeological site and you’ll be able to climb to the top of the pyramid. Along the way, you will see the impressive landscapes as your mind goes on a journey. You will leave with a more thorough knowledge of this wonderful, historical site.

Alberto was an incredible guide, probably the best we’ve ever experienced. A true polymath, his knowledge about and passion for so many different topics was stunning. He had a poetic yet very scientific approach and he is the lead ethnic historian for Cañada de la Virgen. He has participated in DNA analyses helping to shape groundbreaking theories about this fascinating archaeological site. He was very enthusiastic, and a great storyteller, it was almost like reading a thriller, hearing his account of history. Can’t recommend this highly enough, spectacular!
Horacio was an entertaining and knowledgeable guide who made the entire trip both educational and adventurous. The visit to the pyramid of La Cañada was such a memorable experience, and Horacio did a great job bringing the history and significance of the area to life. We highly recommend this trip!
Horacio was a fantastic guide! So passionate about the site and Mexican history in general. The tour exceeded our expectations. Climbing the pyramid was a bit steep but doable even at 65 and 70! Highly recommend this tour.
Great cultural/historical tour. Highly recommend. Those with mobility issues may have difficulty with the walking involved.
Horatio was a wonderful historian and storyteller. He was knowledgeable and unhurried as we explored the ruins. It’s incredible to see the ancient roads and artifacts, and everything has been meticulously maintained and/or restored for a one-of-a-kind experience. And how surreal to climb the pyramid and imagine what it must have been like in its time. We felt like VIP’s in Horatio’s care! He truly went above and beyond for us. Thank you, Horatio!!
Alex was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We learned so much from him. He spoke and moved at a great pace for the tour.
Guide was insightful and knowledgeable. Relaxed.
An amazing experience!!! Our guide was so informative and had a lot of new information as he had assisted with excavations when they were active. The site only allows 2 hours which is just enough. Yes it is uphill and downhill walking. You cannot take backpacks or bags with you past the visitor center. You can take water bottles carried by hand. The drive is not far and starting at 9am we were back at the meeting place by 2pm. I would highly recommend this to ANYONE visiting near San Miguel. It is a little pricey for a 1/2 day tour but the knowledge is priceless.
Our host Alejandro was so knowledgeable and helpful. He knew everything! The area is beyond gorgeous and the history is fascinating. Highly recommend!
Very informative and passionate guide!
We got engaged at the pyramids in Cairo 35 years ago and I decided to surprise my husband with a trip to the pyramids in San Miguel de Allende. I wanted the experience to be special and the tour was everything I’d hoped for. We booked directly with the operator who was transparent on pricing and the amount of walking, transport time, etc. He sent an address where we would meet our guide as well as a map link to ensure we could find the location easily. Our guide Horacio was excellent. His English was perfect, he was knowledgeable about the pyramids, local and world history, current events and more - making him a great guide and easy person to spend a half day with. He also took a fabulous photo of my spouse recreating the proposal. Booking and communication and payment - in my case via WhatsApp and Zelle - were seamless.
Our guide, Alberto, made our experience at the ruins of Canada de la Virgen truly fascinating. His enthusiasm is contagious and his depth of knowledge of this place and the people who have inhabited the area is remarkable. Alberto’s English is excellent and his voice is easy to hear, even with my impaired hearing. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour with Alberto.
Really wonderful and knowledgeable guide and good amount of time at the site with a small group and individualized attention! Very convenient and organized way to take a half-day trip and learn about history and culture!
I did receive a notification that the tour was canceled the same day of the tour.
What an adventure! Our guide was very enthusiastic and informative, and climbing to the top of the pyramids was so cool. The tour bus picked us up at the predetermined spot within walking distance of our apartment and drove us to the pyramid museum area where there are bathrooms and small gift shop. From there, we boarded another bus, along with other tour groups, and were transported through private ranch land to a drop off spot one mile from the site. From there we walked the cobblestone or dirt road to the pyramids. Our guide stopped frequently to give us information. Climbing the pyramids was the climax of the tour. Although we had frequent stops to view points of interest and hear information, the tour moved along and kept to the schedule. Basic facilities are available out of sight of the pyramids. The tour returns to the drop off area, a mile walk back, to return by the bus to the museum where the original tour bus awaits. Wear protective clothing, comfortable sturdy shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and bring water and maybe a snack. Restrooms don't have toilet paper in the stalls, you have to gauge how much you'll need and tear it from a roll at the doorway. We thoroughly enjoyed this activity, which lasted about 4.5 hours total. We were returned to the original pick up point. We would take this tour again. It was very hands on, informative and culturally immersive.
Smooth and responsible service Great Great Great Really cool place Great Great Great Really cool place
A really well-done tour with a knowledgeable guide. Be aware that this tour is physcically demanding. The tour was well-organized and the transportation was efficient. Read the fine print on what you can take - i.e. no purses, bags etc..
We had an absolutely outstanding experience at the Cañada de la Virgen archaeological site, and a huge part of that was due to our tour guide, Alberto. He was kind, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable. The tour itself was immersive and thoughtfully paced, with rich explanations that brought the site’s history, architecture, and cultural significance to life. Beyond the archaeology, Alberto generously shared a wealth of information about San Miguel de Allende as a whole, which made the experience feel even more meaningful and complete. It is clear that Alberto is deeply passionate about what he does and genuinely cares about making the experience special for everyone in the group. We walked away feeling informed, inspired, and grateful for such a high-quality, memorable tour. We would highly recommend him to anyone visiting Cañada de la Virgen.
A wonderful way to learn about the amazing history of the area. Our guide, Isreal, was a walking history lesson!
Tour: We had a great experience on this trip. Our guide was very organized and was so knowledgeable about the site and regional history that he really made it vivid and memorable. We learned so much and had a great time exploring the site. Like every good tour, it left us wanting to learn more! We were also lucky enough to see some of the beautiful horses that roam the area. Highly recommend this tour while you’re in the area. The pace was good for reasonably fit persons. Site: Restroom is available at the site entrance only. You will not be able to carry in bags of any sort. There are secure lockers to leave your bags at the entrance. Uphill and downhill walking on uneven terrain and cobblestones, nothing extreme. Opportunity to climb to the top of the central building and take in the entire view (optional).
Alex was a great guide! Very knowledgable and friendly. He picked us up at the designated location in a car, and then drove us to the site where we boarded a bus. The site is really beautiful. The walk to the site is a little steep in places, but the scenery makes the walk enjoyable. Look for the leaf-cutter ants!
Highly recommended archeological excursion while in San Miguel! Horacio was very friendly and knowledgeable. Be prepared for lots of stairs, but otherwise not a challenging hike. The pyramid and site are can't miss!
The drive and walk to the site gives a chance to see the country side and view of the mountains from the ranch the site is located on. The pyramid itself is magnificent and the adjacent garden is fascinating but what really made the whole trip was the guide, Horatio, who was so well informed and funny.
Our guide Horacio was informative and entertaining. And while the pyramid complex might not be as grand as the one at Teotihuacan, the experience here benefits from the limited number of people who are allowed at the site at one time and the lack of commercialism.
We booked a tour with a guide who had been one of the excavators but we ended up with a guide who wasn’t very knowledgeable. The guide told us that the original guide had died. So, understandable that there had to be a sub but we should have had the opportunity to select a guide with more information to share.
Horacio was quite articulate & knowledgeable. His English was very good, he had a good sense of humor.
Our visit to the archeological site was very informative. Horacio was knowledgeable about the history of the site and provided much detail in an easy to understand way. He made sure all members of the group were comfortable. He drove four of us from San Miguel de Allende to the site and back; he was on time and a safe driver.
We were very excited about the tour as we read superb review of this. However, it was very lackluster and just felt like it was incomplete. Our driver/guide was on time. The ride to the site was pleasant. However, we never did get introduced to the driver/guide. There were 8 persons in the group including us. After reaching the entrance of the site we were given some time to use the restroom before we were ushered into another bigger bus for a short drive closer to the pyramid. We reached a spot where we then proceeded on foot. The hike was very pleasant and scenery breathe taking. There were other groups and each has their own guide. Ours was very lack of a better words, "uneventful ". There was no introduction to the site or the pyramid. Information was very scattered. I had done many tours and this was the least informative. If we could have gone on our own and read up on the sites we would have gotten more. The best thing of the whole tour was when we were on the top of the pyramid and were greeted with a spectacular panoramic view of the site. We were really confused as to how this can get such high review. Perhaps we were just out of luck. We did find out that the original founder/guide of this tour company past away several months ago and a new guide had taken over the company. He sure has a big shoe to fill if all the previous reviews about this tour was true. We just didn't feel like it was that good.
Tenshi did a great job and was able to answer all our questions. He kept the tour on time and was just the best. I would highly recommend him and this company
It was a great trip. Our tour guide, Horacio, was excellent. He made the trip even more interesting. The pyramid and its history are fascinating and well worth a visit for anyone who’s in San Miguel
It was well organized. Israel is friendly and knows quite a bit though not in depth. The group was not prepared nor capable to do the long uphill to the site. I found it less than satisfying. I should have asked more questions about the guide and the group.
Israel was the best guide! Super knowledgeable about the archeology, and bonus that he knew a lot about indigenous food and drinks. Pickup was easy and on time. The hike is not difficult, but may be a lot if you are not active. Definitely recommend!
Pick up was at the noted location and very prompt. The driver was very friendly and courteous and was a great driver. He was also a tour guide and had a lot of knowledge about the pyramids and was patient and supportive of everyone. He’s not the one that the tour Says will be giving the tour- apparently that person passed away earlier this year. But we thoroughly enjoyed his tour.
Excellent, immersive experience at a well-preserved archaeological site. Unfortunately, our guide did not speak English, but there are signs all along the way in both Spanish and English that did a decent job of explaining the site and its various facets.
Mr Coffee was fabulous-we learned so much! Be advised - this is ALOT of uphill walking on uneven ground and the sun is strong! Sunscreen is a must.
It was definitely a cool experience. For the price, being Canadian in US dollars - felt steep for what it was. The guide was only okay. We were with multiple other groups and ours was definitely the slowest. There were folks on the tour that didn’t have capacity to keep up which slowed us all down. It was a lot of waiting upfront then during the actual tour it felt very rushed. Ultimately I’m glad I went, but not sure I’d recommend this guide.
Very small group ( 3 of us ) made this experience really pleasant and the pyramids are magnificent. Ignacio is extremely friendly and has a wealth of knowledge as well as a mischievous sense of humour.
Israel was absolutely fantastic. He was so informative, polite, patient with us. Had a great sense of humor and was friendly to the entire group. I am so glad we did this tour and I recommended to all of my friends and family that are coming down to visit.
They cancelled our trip.. we decided to take an uber their thinking we could but tickets and just go on our own. But you can’t. You have to reserve your time. We ended paying over 70.0O dollars just for transportation and couldn’t get tickets.
Had a great tour with our wonderful guide Horatio. He arrived a couple of minutes early at the designated meeting point, provided bottled water and gave us a lot of information about San Miguel on the way out and back. The site itself is amazing - out in the middle of nowhere and well-protected by staff and fencing from anyone that would be up to no good. The pyramid is surprisingly large and you're allowed to walk all the way up to the top. I recommend it for a four or five hour day trip from San Miguel. Wear a hat, it's sunny out there!
The archaeologist died in March. They haven’t changed the tour name. The company never sent a confirmation message. They didn’t reply to my message the day before about whether to bring lunch. They didn’t respond to my message the morning of the tour. I had to call Viator myself, and they got ahold of the American who runs the company now. Eric said he had a logistical issue with my tour and they could be at the meeting place 70 minutes late. We had no other options, so we agreed. At this point, I was concerned so I looked at recent Viator ratings. One said that Arthur had died, so I WhatsApped Eric to ask if there was another archaeologist to tour us. He didn’t text me back; he called so as not to leave a record. At this point, I understood that he had left the name “archaeologist led” on this tour as fraud intentionally and told him. Horacio arrived 70 minutes late, and he told us that the logistical issue was that no one asked him to tour us until 9:30 am when our appointment was at 9. Horatio have a good tour in good English, but he was no archaeologist and didn’t hold himself out as one. Eric, the manager of the business is a dishonest flake. Go with another tour provider.
We’re not happy with this particular tour. Our guide was fine, although we found out later that he wasn’t the expert archeologist who was originally touted in the tour description. Then, I got a call from Eric Fash through our guide telling me that my money was refunded to my credit card & could I send him the payment via Zelle. Another guest on the tour told me that he also had the money refunded. I am concerned that I will not receive the $15 of Viator rewards I was supposed to receive, since payment was not made to your company. I eventually did pay Eric via Zelle, although not the full amount due to the fact that Viator’s cut wasn’t included. I paid him $210 instead of the original $243 as posted.
Excellent way to visit ruins without a lot of travel. Close to SMA. We were allowed to climb the ruins. Very informative guides.
Fascinating to delve into the history of this newly discovered treasure. Horacio is so knowledgable and shared so much information. I highly recommend.
Guide was kind and knowledgeable. Tour was thorough and informative. You also get to see some beautiful landscapes during the tour. Would highly recommend!
Amazing, magical, informative. Horatio was a joy and very trippy (just how I like my tour guides). Will recommend. Muchas gracias!!
RIP Albert. We will miss you. Our tour was great and we are very sad to gear of your passing. Glad we met you when we did. Muchas gracias
Sadly, Albert Coffee, the well-loved guide for this tour was hospitalized for weeks and then passed away. But neither Trip Advisor or Viator informed us that the tour was cancelled, not before or after!
My son, Albert Coffee, passed away on March 2, 2025.He was passionate about the Maya and especially this site. His enthusiasm and respect for the history and culture was unmatched. Over the past 15 years, he brought some 30,000 people to the pyramid, silently giving thanks to the spirits and ancestors of the canyon every time he entered the site. I will miss him terribly but I trust he’s soaring with the eagles and is watching over the site he so loved. S Coffee
