Costa Rica Culinary Explorer: San José, Heredia and Puerto Viejo
Costa Rica Culinary Explorer
Duration
10 DaysStarts In

San Jose , Heredia Province, Limon Province, San Jose
Costa Rica's culinary story is one of the most compelling and least told in all of Latin America. Beneath the canopy of a country celebrated for its wildlife and adventure lies an extraordinary gastronomic landscape — world-class specialty coffee grown at altitude in the Central Valley, ancient cacao traditions alive along the Caribbean coast, and a vibrant capital city food scene that has quietly become one of the most exciting in Central America. This nine-night journey moves from the Victorian elegance of San José to the misty coffee farms of Heredia, and finally to the culturally distinct, Afro-Caribbean-inflected Caribbean coast of Puerto Viejo. Unhurried, immersive, and deeply flavorful, this is Costa Rica for the curious traveler who understands that a country is best understood, first and most truthfully, through what it chooses to grow, cook, and share.

Day 1
Day 1: Arrival in San José
Touch down at Juan Santamaría International Airport and transfer directly to the heart of San José — a capital city of surprising sophistication, hidden courtyards, and a food scene evolving with extraordinary creativity. Choose from a carefully curated selection of luxury boutique hotels in the city's most characterful neighborhoods — elegant restored mansions, intimate design hotels, and contemporary addresses whose restaurants are among the finest in Costa Rica. Settle into your beautifully appointed room, open a bottle of local craft beer on the terrace, and let San José — complex, vibrant, and perpetually underestimated — introduce itself on its own terms. This is a city that rewards curiosity, and the journey ahead promises to reveal it at its most delicious and alive.

Day 2: San José Food Scene & Mercado Central | Saints, Spices & Street Food
Begin the morning with a private guided food tour of San José — a city whose culinary identity is shifting rapidly, driven by a generation of young Costa Rican chefs reclaiming traditional ingredients and techniques with remarkable confidence and creativity. Visit the Mercado Central, the city's great beating gastronomic heart, where butchers, spice vendors, casado stalls, and tropical fruit sellers occupy the same extraordinary space they have for over a century. Afternoon brings a private cooking class with a local chef — gallo pinto, olla de carne, patacones — before an evening at one of San José's most celebrated contemporary restaurants, where the flavors of the Central Valley are elevated to something genuinely memorable.

Day 3: Coffee Farm Immersion | Santa Bárbara de Heredia
Journey thirty minutes from San José into the coffee-growing highlands of Heredia to a celebrated boutique inn and working organic coffee farm whose on-site tour is widely regarded as one of the most thorough and beautifully presented in all of Costa Rica. From seed to cup, a private guide walks you through every stage of specialty coffee production: the raised nurseries, the hand-picking of ripe red cherries, the washing and drying processes, the roasting, and finally the cupping — a professional sensory evaluation that fundamentally changes the way you will understand every cup you drink hereafter. Lunch uses produce grown on the finca itself, and the farm-to-table restaurant overlooking the valley is reason enough to linger well into the afternoon.

Day 4: Central Valley Culinary Deep Dive | Heredia
A second day in the Central Valley rewards those with the patience to look beyond the obvious. Visit a local chocolate producer working with single-origin Costa Rican cacao, then tour a family-run dairy farm producing artisanal cheeses in the highland tradition before a long, leisurely lunch at a farm-to-table restaurant overlooking coffee terraces cascading toward the valley floor. In the afternoon, join a private lesson in traditional Costa Rican baking — pan de yuca, rosquillas, chorreadas — with a local family whose recipes have passed unchanged through four generations. The evening brings a private pairing dinner at your lodge: single-origin coffee-infused dishes matched with Costa Rica's emerging fine dining sensibility.

Day 5: Transfer to Caribbean Coast | Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
Board a private transfer and cross the country from the Central Valley to the Caribbean — a journey of just a few hours that delivers you into an entirely different cultural and culinary world. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is Costa Rica's Caribbean jewel: an Afro-Caribbean community of extraordinary cultural richness, whose cuisine — rice and beans cooked in coconut milk, rondon seafood stew, patí spiced turnovers — owes more to Jamaica and West Africa than to Spanish Central America. Your selected accommodation is a beautifully designed boutique property whose restaurant has drawn comparisons to some of the finest establishments in the world. The Caribbean air is warm, heavy, and fragrant. The adventure, now distinctly different, is entirely renewed.

Day 6: Cacao Farm & Chocolate Making | Caribbean Coast
Journey into the jungle interior of the Caribbean lowlands to visit a Bribri indigenous cacao farm — one of the most culturally and culinarily significant experiences Costa Rica offers. A community guide leads you through the ancestral cacao groves, explaining the spiritual and nutritional role this plant has played in Bribri culture for millennia, before demonstrating the traditional process of hand-roasting, grinding, and preparing chicha de cacao — a ceremonial chocolate drink of remarkable depth and complexity. Participate in a chocolate-making workshop using traditional methods, take home your own cacao paste, and return to Puerto Viejo for an afternoon at leisure before a dinner at your hotel where the evening's Caribbean flavors arrive with genuine, unhurried artistry.

Day 7: Caribbean Cooking Class & Local Market | Puerto Viejo
Rise for a morning visit to the Puerto Viejo farmers' market, where local producers bring Caribbean-grown fruits — breadfruit, soursop, starfruit, and cacao — alongside spices, hot sauces, and prepared foods of extraordinary variety and color. Armed with the morning's haul, join a private cooking class with a local Afro-Caribbean chef — learning the techniques and cultural context behind the Caribbean coast's most celebrated dishes before sitting down together to eat what you've made. The afternoon is devoted to exploration at your own pace: cycling to Punta Uva, swimming in the warm Caribbean sea, or simply sitting on a beach that looks nothing like the Pacific side and requires no further justification than its own extraordinary beauty.

Day 8: Cahuita National Park & Final Culinary Evening | Caribbean Coast
Spend the morning inside Cahuita National Park — a reef-fringed coastal reserve where the Caribbean forest meets a coral-rich sea of astonishing clarity, and white-faced monkeys move with theatrical confidence along the beach trail beside you. Return to Puerto Viejo for a long, lazy lunch at a waterfront restaurant where whole Caribbean snapper arrives grilled over wood coals and the rum sours are made with local citrus. The evening's final culinary experience is a private tasting dinner at your hotel — a procession of small dishes showcasing the full breadth of the Caribbean larder, paired with wines curated specifically for this coast's extraordinary spice and sweetness.

Day 9: Final Caribbean Morning | San José Overnight
Rise for a final swim in the warm Caribbean sea as howler monkeys call from the treeline behind the beach, and pelicans move in improbable slow formation above the water. A last breakfast at the restaurant — fresh tropical fruit, Caribbean-style eggs, the best coffee you've encountered since Heredia — rounds out nine days of genuine, deeply flavorful discovery. Allow the particular warmth and unhurried rhythm of Puerto Viejo to settle fully into memory before a private transfer winds northwest along the Caribbean coast and over the mountains into San José, where a final night at a carefully selected boutique hotel awaits. Dinner, a glass of something local, and the quiet satisfaction of a journey that has revealed two entirely different Costa Ricas.

Day 10: San José | Farewell & Private Airport Transfer
A final Costa Rican morning unfolds at its own gentle pace — a leisurely breakfast, perhaps a walk through the neighborhood to browse the coffee boutiques and artisan shops of the Barrio Escalante, and one last opportunity to carry something of this extraordinary country home. The memory of two entirely different Costa Ricas — the highland coffee country and the vibrant, Afro-Caribbean lowlands — sit together in a way that feels like the fullest possible portrait of an endlessly surprising nation. When the moment arrives, a private transfer delivers you seamlessly to Juan Santamaría International Airport. Go home with a suitcase full of single-origin coffee, a notebook full of extraordinary meals, and the particular, luminous hunger to return that only the very best journeys reliably produce.
