San Jose

Route

San Jose , Tortuguero NP, Arenal Volcano NP, Monteverde, Tamarindo

This ten-day itinerary moves through four of Costa Rica's most iconic ecosystems in a single, well-paced trip. After a brief introduction to San José, you'll travel by boat into Tortuguero's jungle canals for two days of wildlife spotting and sea turtle conservation, then continue to Arenal for volcano hikes and natural hot springs. From there, Monteverde's misty cloud forest brings hanging bridge walks and one of Latin America's longest zip-line courses, before the trip closes with two unhurried days on Guanacaste's Pacific coast in Tamarindo. It's a genuinely comprehensive route — rainforest, volcano, cloud forest, and beach all represented — built for travelers who want real variety without sacrificing depth in any one place.

Itinerary

Day
1

Day 1: Welcome to San José

You clear customs and step into San José, Costa Rica's lively capital tucked into the Central Valley, where a private transfer carries you into the city center. The rest of the day is yours to unwind after travel or dip into the culture on offer — a wander through historic neighborhoods, a stop at the Gold Museum or National Theater, or simply a Costa Rican coffee at a café somewhere quiet. San José offers a genuine glimpse into the country's heritage before the trip turns toward wilder territory, and it makes an easy, unhurried gateway into everything still ahead.

Day
2

Day 2: Journey to Tortuguero

Today you head into Tortuguero, a region so defined by water and rainforest it's earned the nickname "the Amazon of Costa Rica," and there are two ways to get there. The classic route is a scenic drive through banana plantations followed by a boat transfer along winding jungle canals, since no roads reach this remote stretch of the Caribbean coast. The ride doubles as an early wildlife safari. For a faster, more effortless arrival, you can instead take a short flight of about 30 minutes from San José to the Tortuguero airstrip, with sweeping aerial views over the canals and rainforest before a brief boat transfer to your lodge. Either way, Tortuguero's reputation for nesting sea turtles and remarkable biodiversity becomes obvious almost immediately. A guided boat tour through the canals this afternoon turns up monkeys, caimans, toucans, and a steady stream of colorful birdlife. Settle into your jungle lodge for the evening, with the rainforest's sounds as your soundtrack.

Day
3

Day 3: Exploring Tortuguero

Today goes deeper into Tortuguero's ecosystem, starting with a guided walk through the small, close-knit village itself, where local guides explain both the culture of the region and the decades of conservation work protecting its nesting sea turtles. From there, another pass through the canal system reveals a different cast of wildlife by daylight — herons, sloths, and iguanas all turn up along the water's edge, seen from a vantage point few destinations can offer. Spend the afternoon back at the lodge, whether that means the pool or simply time to take in how genuinely untouched this corner of Costa Rica remains.

Day
4

Day 4: Onward to Arenal

Leaving Tortuguero by boat and bus, you travel today to Guápiles before a private transfer carries you onward to Arenal, home to Costa Rica's most recognizable volcano. The change in landscape and pace is significant — canals and dense lowland jungle give way to a mountainous region defined by its near-perfect volcanic cone. Once settled in, the rest of the day is open: soak in one of the area's natural hot springs, or simply take in panoramic volcano views from wherever you're staying. Arenal has long been a favorite for adventurers and birdwatchers alike, and today is your gentle introduction to it.

Day
5

Day 5: Into Arenal Volcano National Park

A guided tour today leads you through Arenal Volcano National Park, hiking across old lava fields and through rainforest that has steadily reclaimed the terrain since past eruptions. The views along the way — toward both the volcano and Lake Arenal — are some of the most striking in the country, and your naturalist guide fills in the flora and fauna as you go. The afternoon is left open for whatever pace suits you: return to relax, or lean into the adrenaline with zip-lining or river rafting, or simply return to the region's thermal springs. Arenal rarely disappoints as a highlight of any Costa Rica trip.

Day
6

Day 6: A Scenic Drive to Monteverde

After breakfast, a private transfer carries you toward Monteverde, trading Arenal's volcanic lowlands for a cooler, mist-covered highland climate. The drive itself is genuinely scenic, winding through rolling hills and coffee plantations that hint at what's ahead. Once you've settled into your lodge, surrounded by dense cloud forest greenery, the afternoon is yours to fill — a nearby coffee farm tour or a visit to a butterfly garden are both easy, low-key ways to spend the time. Monteverde has a reputation as one of the best birdwatching regions in the country, and the shift in atmosphere here is immediately noticeable.

Day
7

Day 7: Monteverde's Cloud Forest Adventures

Today pairs two very different ways of taking in the cloud forest. A guided walk across Monteverde's famous hanging bridges offers sweeping views over the canopy and a real chance at spotting wildlife most visitors miss from the ground. From there, an exhilarating zip-line canopy tour — among the longest and most thrilling in Latin America — sends you soaring through the same treetops from an entirely different vantage point. The afternoon is left free for more exploring or simply sitting with the forest's quiet, misty stillness. Monteverde manages to balance genuine adventure and real tranquility better than almost anywhere else on this route.

Day
8

Day 8: Off to Guanacaste's Coast

After breakfast, a private transfer carries you down from Monteverde's highlands to the sun-drenched shores of Guanacaste, delivering you into Tamarindo, a laid-back beach town known for its golden sand and warm Pacific waters. The shift in scenery and pace is immediate and welcome after a week of rainforest and cloud forest exploring. Once settled into your beachfront accommodations, spend the rest of the day easing into coastal life — a swim, time by the pool, or simply watching the sunset from the sand. Tamarindo offers exactly the kind of unwinding this point in the trip calls for.

Day
9

Day 9: A Day of Ease in Guanacaste

Today is yours to spend however you like. Lounge under the palms, swim in the clear Pacific, or wander Tamarindo's shops and restaurants at an easy pace. For those still craving a bit more, surfing lessons, snorkeling, horseback riding, and sailing tours are all readily available, and nearby national parks offer one more chance at wildlife spotting if you're not quite ready to be done with nature. A sunset catamaran cruise is a fitting way to close things out. However you choose to spend it, Guanacaste delivers a relaxed, well-earned finale to the trip.

Day
10

Day 10: Departure from Liberia

After breakfast, a private transfer carries you back to Liberia's international airport for your flight home. Ten days after arriving, the range you've covered is considerable — nesting turtles and jungle canals in Tortuguero, a volcano's lava fields in Arenal, cloud forest canopy walks in Monteverde, and Pacific sunsets in Guanacaste. This itinerary moves through some of Costa Rica's most iconic and ecologically distinct regions in a single trip, and it's hard to leave without a genuine appreciation for what "Pura Vida" actually means.
