Great experience and value!! Also perfect if you have limited time in the city. It’s a good way to see and do a lot during a short stay. Definitely a bang for your buck! Saw the downtown sights. Learned a lot of culture and history. Going into the markets with a guide was very useful to help learn and navigate them so we felt much more comfortable going back in. And coffee, tamales and empanadas was a perfect ending!

Itinerary
We begin at the Monumento de los Presentes, where we'll introduce the tour by discussing how the city and its culture have endured through many changes. The monument itself personifies the typical inhabitants of the city, who are at risk of disappearing due to modernization. These figures stand firm, serious, and represent a silent rebellion against the sweeping changes around them, symbolizing resilience and the preservation of identity in the face of transformation.
--- We will visit the Borbón Market, also known as the Market of the Carretas, where local families have proudly sold fresh fruits and vegetables for over four generations. This bustling market is a cornerstone of the community, offering a window into the daily lives of vendors who have passed down their knowledge and traditions through the years. As we explore, you’ll be immersed in the vibrant colors, scents, and flavors of the market while learning about its rich history and its essential role in sustaining the city with fresh, local produce. This market serves as both a cultural and agricultural hub, connecting the people of the city with the region’s bountiful harvests.
We will visit the Central Market, established in 1880, where you'll have the opportunity to learn about the foundations of Costa Rican agriculture and daily culture. This historic market is a vibrant hub of local life, offering a glimpse into the traditions and practices that have shaped Costa Rican cuisine for generations. As we explore the market, you'll discover the essential ingredients, meet local vendors, and gain insight into the agricultural practices that sustain the region. It's a perfect introduction to the rich cultural tapestry that makes Costa Rica unique.
We will visit the historic Cathedral of San José, whose origins date back to 1788. This cathedral was part of a grand design involving the construction of five churches arranged to form a cross, a symbol of deep religious significance. The cathedral, built in Romanesque style, features beautiful architectural details and a serene atmosphere. Beneath its foundation lie catacombs, adding a layer of mystery and history to this sacred space. As we explore, you'll learn about the church's importance in Costa Rica's religious and cultural development, as well as the stories embedded within its walls.
Is include a visit to the entrance hall of Costa Rica’s National Theater. In the heart of San Jose, the National Theatre (Teatro Nacional) remains one of the capital city’s most popular tourist attractions.” The ornate Neo-Classical theatre is considered the finest historic building in San Jose, and is known for its exquisite interior decorated with lavish furnishings and beautiful murals.
We will visit Mr. Sloth Coffee Shop and head up to the second floor, where you'll enjoy a home-cooked meal featuring tamales made from ancient colonial recipes, lovingly prepared by a local family. You'll also have the chance to taste unique dishes such as banana ceviche, Guanacastecan ceviche, or pejibaye ceviche—authentic pre-Hispanic foods. The experience continues with a hands-on cooking class, where you'll learn how to make artisanal chocolate empanadas, all while enjoying specialty coffee brewed in traditional vandolas.
In front of Mr. Sloth Coffee, you can find two beautiful parks: Morazán Park, which features El Templo de la Música, and Spain Park. Additionally, the Barrio Escalante area is just a 10-minute walk away.

Great way to get your bearings and feel comfortable in the city. Great to try different fruits and understand the markets. Loved la sorbetera de lolo mora. Also making a sweet empanada. Great local tourguide.
I loved this tour. Lots of local foods to try, tour guide very knowledgeable and made it really fun.
Marcello was my guide, he was very friendly and knowledgeable! Loved the fruit tasting in particular.
Our guide Omar was very personable and knowledgeable about Costa Rican history, foods, coffee, fruits, and architecture. We explored and tasted our way through two large and bustling markets and explored some beautiful historic buildings before a lunch of tamales, local juices, empanadas that we learned to make ourselves, and delicious coffee. I learned a lot and had a very enjoyable afternoon.
We were sent an email that they couldn’t do the tour at the scheduled time (10 am), and asked if we could go at 11:30. That was not possible due to our plans, and we are hoping for a full refund.
Enjoyed both the food and learning about Costa Rica! It was great to try several fruits that were new to me. Appreciated the chance to prepare my own plaintain tortilla snack.
Excelente tour will highly recommend our tour guide was very professional and he was very knowledgeable great way to discover parts of Costa Rica like the market and culture
Dinora was a fantastic tour guide! She was so friendly, knowledgeable, and engaging, and she happily answered all my questions throughout the experience. Due to some changes, the group ended up being just me and Dinora, but she still delivered an excellent tour and made the experience feel personal and enjoyable. We visited the local market and got to try a variety of delicious foods, including different fruits, ceviche, and ice cream. We then walked back to the café, where I enjoyed a tamal and a drink, along with a few other dishes, including a plantain empanada paired with coffee. Everything was delicious, and there was plenty of food to make the experience filling and worthwhile! I loved getting to experience the local food and learn more about the culture along the way. This tour was absolutely worth it, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore Costa Rica through its food. Dinora made the experience truly special!
Angel was such a great guide! The tour was fun and we got to try delicious foods and absorb the local culture. Definitely recommend!
A wonderful walking and eating tour of downtown San Jose. Our tour guide Dino made the city feel friendly and explained Costa Rican culture and cuisine.
I did this tour alone during my second visit to Costa Rica, and it was much more thorough than I expected. Even though I had already been to Costa Rica and visited the marketplace before, I learned a great deal and gained a deeper appreciation for the local food and culture. My favorite part was the fruit tasting. We got to try many different fruits side by side, which made it easy to compare their flavors and textures. There was a wonderful variety, and there was more than enough for everyone to share. At the end of the tour, I loved making my own little empanada and sitting down to enjoy it with the group. The flavors were amazing, and it was a fun, hands-on experience that I would really like to recreate at home. The tour was informative, enjoyable, and well organized, and I appreciated how much we were able to see and taste. I definitely recommend booking this tour.
The tour is was very informative, and it is a walking tour, which means dress in comfort walking tennis. And also stay hydrated. Ended with a coffee shop and eats, enjoyed the experience.
This was a fun tour. The guide, Angel, was very knowledgeable about many things Costa Rican and was enthusiastic about telling us about them. The tour did feel a bit rushed, though. We would have liked to have had some time to look further into the places we went. On the other hand - we now have a good idea of where to go tomorrow.
Angel was our guide.very nice and friendly and knowledgeable.loved the tour. Nice to be in a group with people from all over the world! My son and I loved this experience. He gives the best places to buy fresh food and souvenirs.
Angel was so friendly and he gave us a truly local experience! I enjoyed learning more about the rich history and culture in Costa Rica!
We booked this at midnight for the next day. It was my mistake because it books the day after but I asked for a refund because we were leaving the next day. No responses no one answers the phone. No response through the app. It was less than 24 hours, but we could not go. Was very unfair.
First of all , our guide Dino was absolutely amazing , knowledgeable, helpful and kind. We felt so fortunate to have her ...a fantastic ambassador not only for your company but for Costa Rica as a whole. Highly Recommended
Nice orientation to San Jose. Sampling of fruits, then a mini cooking class. Saw two markets and learned about the country.
Our guide, the locals we met and the people working at the coffee shop at our last stop were phenomenal. We learned a ton, got to try a ton of new and different things and the entire experience was amazing.
I LOVED my experience! The guides were great and they even introduced me to new fruit that I ended up buying! Loved it so much and talked to some great people
Angel showed us all around the historic center of San Jose, including the public markets, cathedral, national theater, and a coffee shop. We also samples local fruit, and sherbet. The tour was mainly in English, Angel's is very good.
It's very educative and made us understand the way things are in Costa Rica. We had some of the best fruits and coffee at the end was good
Wonderful experience! I learned so much about the culture and the food. The guide (Marcelo) was a Rock Star! ⭐️
This was an excellent tour. The guide was great and gave a fantastic explanation of the history and culture of Costa Rica. We also made empanadas and tasted some local foods. We ended the day at Mr. Sloths coffee shop. I would recommend this tour for people of all ages. Thank you for a great day!!!
Our guide, Oscar, was enthusiastic and knowledgeable! The tour gives you a great lesson on history and foods of Costa Rica. Visiting the local markets and tasting local fruits was fun and the capstone was going to Sloth Coffee Shop were we made our own empanadas and had amazing coffee with the owner, Eric, who also is very knowledgeable of Costa Rica. He brewed the coffee in an amazing pour over ceramic pot from a neighboring town. We liked it so much that we travelled there today to buy one to take home. We can’t wait to enjoy our Costa Rican coffee in our beautiful ceramic pot when we get back home.
Really tasty food walk with lots of food - thanks to our cool guide Dinorah.
This was one of the best tours I have taken. It packed in a ton of interesting facts and meaningful experiences. Oscar was a fantastic guide who clearly loves what he does and wants to be sure you are having a good experience. He was knowledgeable, kind, and very communicative. Ending with Eddie at Mr Sloths coffee was also special. The coffee we sampled with the empanadas we each made was top notch. This is a very reasonably priced tour for everything packed into it. Thank you for a lovely informative time!
Great experience had great time with Oscar. He is very personable and knowledgeable. I enjoyed trying different fruits that I have never had before and the food was tasty. And to top off some delicious coffee. I definitely recommend to anyone coming to San Jose.
Wear comfortable shoes it is a lot of walking. Our tour guide Marcelo was funny and very knowledgeable. Also offered to wait if anyone wanted to check out something that interested them on the tour.
A nice tour; not too long or too short. Just right. Our tour guide Marcel was very upbeat and knowledgeable. He shared a lot of interesting information about food and also the history of San Jose and Costa Rica. We tasted ice cream, fruits, tamales, frog juice, and we made our own sweet empanadas. Of course the tour ended with a coffee tasting. A nice introduction to downtown San Jose and its tasty foods.
It was good and informative and well planned. Food was very flavorful. Guide was on point and we'll organized
Relaxed way to spend a morning in San Jose. Nice to see the markets and a couple of key sights. Our guide was lovely and very informative. I was expecting to be trying street food along the way, however this was not the case and the 'bites' happened at the tour operator's cafe at the end. Therefore, I would say the advice to not eat beforehand is not a good idea, as you don't actually eat anything except some fruit for the first 2/2.5hrs! Overall though an enjoyable experience for a good price.
Great tour. I enjoyed being in the main downtown and seeing the markets. The tasting of the fruits and local food was delicious. I would have love a bit more history but thats just me. The guide was very informative. The coffee store was amazing and the coffee specialist was a perfectionist when it came to coffee. Everyone was very friendly
This was such a fun couple of hours. I loved visiting the markets, and the cathedral. It was fun to taste fresh fruits from the market! The ice cream was yummy! The tamales at the end were so delicious especially with the gold sauce on it. It was really fun to make our empanada to enjoy with coffee. The staff were amazing!
Angel was a terrific guide. Very knowledgeable about the history of Costa Rica and the local food scene. The only downside was that there weren’t a lot of foods being sampled during the tour. And he didn’t really get into the street food scene at all. He did a good job covering some of the traditional Costa Rican food but I felt like I didn’t really discover much more than what I’d already known about Costa Rican food…and my knowledge is limited.
Great service. It is well organized. Just the right balance between informative, fun and open ended.
Guide was great. Please note other than tasting some fruit you do not get food until the very end. Many of us skipped lunch & were very hungry & not aware of this. At the end you get a tamale & something else that was small. As a surprise we got to press our own sweet empanada & eat it after it was cooked. Be aware tour ends in a different location but walking distance. I did this on a Saturday & the amount of people was overwhelming.
A great tour to get a feel for San José. I got to try some food that I wouldn't have otherwise and the guide was friendly and helpful.
Very friendly tour guide who shared nice information about San José culture and people ! Also got to try some delicious food. Thank you ! Glad this was a part of our trip here in Costa rica.
Lots of walking involved (not a bad thing) with a good mix of local knowledge, culture and cuisine. Particularly liked the fruit tasting early on and the coffee and tamales at the end.
Dino was a great tour guide! Very pleasant and friendly :) We started on time and enjoyed the experience thoroughly!
Lots of interesting information about Costa Rica. I’m not sure why we went to a church though. Overall a fun experience when visiting San Jose. Would be nice to try more samples.
I had a great experience! Even with the rainy weather, we still got to explore the local markets and see downtown. It felt like a true local San Jose experience and the food was delicious. Angel was a incredible tour guide - very kind and informative!
Nice tour across San Jose markets and historic areas. Guides were really good. Fruits and ice cream at the market was delicious. Food at the end was very good. One suggestion would be to spread out the food a little bit more. I was disappointed there were no food samplings from the small sodas in the market. Went back and sampled some
This is a wonderful and insightful tour, and provides a great introduction to central San Jose. I was pleased to not only see the well-known Public Market, but also the nearby Mercado Borbón, an authentic market for the locals and a non-commercial (no souvenirs) experience. Our tour included sampling fruits and explanations about how Ticos prepare and eat them. t the Sloth Coffee House, we also were able to eat a traditional Costa Rican pork tamale and prepare our own sweet dessert. A great experience packed into just a few hours!
Great walking tour to experience, the culture, food, history, and people of Costa Rica. Marcello was an excellent guide.
We had a fantastic time with Marcelo on this tour. Tried several exotic (to me!) fruits at the farmers market and he was so informative about origins and history. The walking portion past several National monuments was interesting. We ended at Mr Sloth with local dishes and coffee. Exceeded my expectations. A great way to spend the morning.
Lots of walking. Guide was very informative and helpful. It was interesting to see downtown Costa Rica city of San Juan.
This was a great value tour that combined cultural and historical knowledge, sightseeing and local cuisine. Angel was friendly and knowledgeable.
