Itinerary
We will visit the Campus of the University of Costa Rica, which holds some of the largest patches of forest in the San José Metro Area. On our first stop, we will look for resident and migratory birds, incredible insects and amazing plants and flowers. We'll be talking about art, history, indigenous culture, and most of all, nature. Then, we'll visit the main campus where we will be looking for sloths that live freely and hopefully even see the two different species that inhabit our country. DISCLAIMER: This is not a Recue Center or Sloth Sactuary Tour. You will not be able to touch them, if found, the sloths will be seen in their natural habitat, which means most of the time they will be sleeping on the trees. Still, our experience is your best option at San Jose if you're a true nature lover. This is a 2,5h walking tour, some parts will be exposed to intense sunlight. Not a heavy walk, but please consider your physical condition

The walking tour was great! The guide met us on time at the meeting spot. After quick intros, we started off the tour. Our guide Luis was super knowledgeable about flora and fauna of the campus and campus itself. We spotted 7 different sloths on our 2 hour journey. Luis knew where to look for sloth and answered all our questions. At the end of the tour he suggested few restaurants on and off the campus and a place to catch an Uber. Traveled as a family of 5 with 2 adults and kiddos aged 9 to 14 and everyone enjoyed it.
We saw 5 sloths, 2 owls, and multiple other birds and insects in this tour on a local college campus. Learned lots of new things about sloths and other creatures.
Lovely morning wandering the lush grounds of the University of Costa Rica. Nia our guide was knowledgeable, engaging and enthusiastic. Saw lots of birds, interesting plants I haven’t seen before and most importantly several sloths, including a baby sloth. Nia carried a small telescope with her so we could see every detail, every hair on the sloth! Delighted I chose this tour- highly recommend for anyone interested in nature.
Oropopo Experience were very responsible, had an inconvenient with their guide and immediately contacted me to set our appointment with a different tour guide. Priscilla was amazing! She did the entire tour in English and Spanish and made it really entertaining and enjoyable! We got to see 5 sloths and learned a lot about plants, trees and other animals; without going far from San Jose.
My girlfriend and I were looking for something to do on our last day in Costa Rica while in San Jose. We booked this tour as while we had seen a good number of animals touring our travels we hadn’t seen any sloths. We ended up finding 7 total during the tour including a mother with its baby. Our tour guide was great too translating as we went between English and Spanish.
This is a hidden gem in San Jose! Sloths, birds, plants and insects both native and non-native to Costa Rica The naturalist was very knowledgeable and engaging.
This nature walking tour was well paced and with well experienced guide Priscilla who explained well and gave lot of background info making the tour more interesting. We got lucky to watch sloths that were very active on that day made it extra special. Highly recommend even if you are not natural lover, we will learn a lot.
Our guide, Dariel, was very knowledgeable and interesting. He led our small bilingual group switching easily between Spanish and English and making sure everyone felt included. We saw sloths in the tree tops and Dariel helped us get photos. We also stopped to look at and learn about local plants and flowers, insects and birds. It was an enjoyable half day experience that allowed us to fit a little nature into our short stay in San Jose.
Fantastic experience. Unreal looks at 3 sloths (1 on the ground). Beautiful butterfly garden and the grounds are excellent. Ismael is a star- passionate, knowledgeable and friendly!
It was wonderful to learn about Costa Rica's nature, plants, and wildlife, and seeing the sloths was the highlight. Our guide Priscilla was knowledgeable, clearly passionate about the subject, and spoke excellent English. The small group made the experience feel personal and intimate. Highly recommended!
Priscilla was very knowledgeable, and scouted for sloths before the tour began. So we got to see several, and one was very active. She also used the telescope to show a lot of birds close up, explained the flowers, plants, trees, and insects, and showed us the petrified skull of a giant prehistoric sloth.
Louis was an amazing guide who did the tour with a lot of know how and passion providing lots of information about the biology of costa rica. And its of course ultra cute to see sloths, we saw 3 of them very close.
5 fun and easy for those with mobility issues.
What a wonderful experience with Rigo, our guide who was detailed and attentive. I walked in with little knowledge of the animals around Costa Rica and left a passionate advocate of sloth conservation and protection efforts. Look forward to going on more tours and adventures!
I chose the morning tour and it was excellent! Our guide, Priscilla, is bilingual (in English and Spanish). She is enthusiastic, knowledgeable and engaging throughout the tour. We saw many species of birds and 5 sloths (though with nature, one must be patient). Amazing to see so much biodiversity at the university campus where the tour took place. I highly recommend!
Because we had some time to spend, and San José isn't a nice City to stroll around, we booked a sloth and bird watching tour. What can I say? We weren't dissapointed at all! Our sympathic tour guide was very passionate at her Job and told us a lot about birds and the wildlife in Costa Rica. We saw two- and threefinger sloths and a couple of birds. All in one a highly recommended tour!
Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to explain and answer questions along the way. He also was very acomidating to my needs.
Absolutely fantastic few hours seeing sloths and birds. Yendry our guide was passionate, knowledgeable and fun showing us her countries wildlife and seemed to genuinely enjoy it.
Pri was a great guide! Friendly and very informative and passionate about all.. She knew about the birds, plants, sloths and much more. We were lucky to see 7 sloths (both species, a baby a teenager). I would highly recommend this tour!
Everything about this tour was fantastic. Dariel is a very passionate biologist who knows an incredible amount about nature and was able to answer all our questions. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and clearly loves what he does. We also got to see sloths, which was exciting. I didn’t get bored for a single moment, and the three hours simply flew by. What a great guide! I would absolutely recommend this tour!
Absolutely great guide, we really enjoyed the tour and were also lucky to see the sloths including sloth mama with a baby.
Our Oropopo guided nature walk in San José was an absolutely fantastic experience! Our guide, Priscilla, is a biologist and her knowledge and passion for Costa Rica’s incredible wildlife and natural environment were truly impressive. She pointed out and explained all sorts of birds, insects, plants and other fascinating wildlife that we would have easily missed on our own. The one thing we really wanted from this tour was to see sloths in their natural habitat, and we were thrilled to see three sloths on the grounds of the University of Costa Rica! Seeing these beautiful animals in the wild was certainly a highlight and an experience we will never forget. Priscilla was incredibly patient and never once rushed us. In fact, she spent considerably longer with us than the scheduled tour time to make sure we had the best possible experience. Her enthusiasm, knowledge and genuine desire to share the wonders of Costa Rica made the tour so special. We highly recommend Oropopo and especially Priscilla to anyone wanting to discover the amazing nature and wildlife of San José. A wonderful experience, and seeing those three sloths made it truly unforgettable!
I recently took the San José Walking Nature Tour with Priscilla, and it was absolutely amazing! Priscilla was incredibly knowledgeable, informative, and a true pleasure to be around. She patiently answered our many questions as she guided us through the beautiful campus. We were incredibly fortunate to spot both a two-toed and a three-toed sloth awake and active! However, even without those lucky sightings, the tour would have been well worth it just for the experience and information. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting!
Our guide Dariel was very knowledgeable. We loved walking with him and we saw 2 slots. The campus walk was good.
I really enjoyed the tour! We learned a lot about sloths, birds, spiders and trees 🌳🦥 We saw two sloths during the walking and the guide helped us to take photos. It was a great experience!
We saw 4 sloths that were very active. They were moving all around the trees and eating leaves. Such an incredible experience at such a low cost. The pictures and videos I got were so amazing and all my friends were impressed. The guide was amazing and was very educated and knew everything about the plants and sloths. Great excursion especially if you are staying in or near San Jose. Thank you to our guide, Alexa for educating us to help with conservation.
What a wonderful morning it was, at the campus with a most knowledgeable tour guide Priscilla :) We saw birds and flowers and our highlight the slots. Thank you guys , your passion will pay off. Its an ecperience we willnalways treasure :)
We only had a morning, and luckily we found this tour. We had a great time, our guide was very knowledgeable and show us not only sloths but also other very nice and interesting places in the university. Recommended!
The tour was really fun and we saw some sloths and other animals around. We had one day in San Jose and this was our Activity, would do this again.
Really nice tour, we saw sloths and our guide was really nice and was able to answer all our questions
This was an awesome experience! We got to see 3 sloths that day and those were the main animal I was wanting to see. Our guide, David, did a wonderful job of finding wildlife and telling us about it.
We enjoyed the tour with our guide Yendry. She was so kind and patient while explaining everything to us. Thought the campus was full of students, it was pretty silent, and so the walk turned out to be really calm. We saw 4 sloths: 2 males, a female and her baby, all of them in different spots. I strongly recommend to make this trip, you'll enjoy every little thing que guide has planned for it.
This tour was great. Our guide Santiago was wonderful - knowledgeable about flora, fauna, history, & culture. There were only 4 of us on the tour but we had plenty of questions... there wasn't a question he could answer. The area we toured was park-like, so plenty to see & discus. It was easy walking and a good amount of time. Seeing the sloths was a highlight, especially when one decided to come to ground. That alone was worth more than the price of the tour (which I think was a reasonable amount for all that we learned & saw). I highly recommend the tour.
Great experience! Our guide had a hugh knowledge and we saw sloths. I can recommend it if younwant to experience nature in the city
A very knowledgeable and versatile guide and great location for an urban nature tour in San Jose.
The tour was informative and interesting. We saw a few sloths. Our guide, Dariel, was great. He was very well informed and very engaging.
David was a wonderful guide and shared lots of interesting information with us and answered our questions. We saw birds, squirrels and sloths on the tour. Recommended.
A great experience! We walked the university campus, saw beautiful animals, and learned from a passionate and knowledgeable guide who was a biologist. I loved that it was at the university so it gave you an experience of student life too. I highly recommend.
Amazing first experience in Costa Rica with our guide Louis!
I had a really fun time exploring the university campus of San Jose and it was really cool to get such a closeup view of the sloths. Our guide Priscilla was very passionate and informative and she made the experience very enjoyable
Our guide Pri was friendly and informative on all the topics involved (plants, insects, birds and animals). Was well worth the money!
Amazing! The guide was very patient and kind to answer all of our questions and show us things we wouldn’t have seen such as a mom and baby sloth in the trees with the telescope!
This was a wonderful experience! Priscilla is an amazing nature guide and the forest on the university is beautiful! We learned so much about the local birds, insects and even saw three sloths! Priscilla patiently answered everyone's questions and set up her telescope at each stop so we could see the wildlife up close. I got wonderful photos with just my iPhone. We were able to see the wildlife much better on this tour than the wildlife sanctuary we visited the next day. We are planning a return trip to Costa Rica next year and plan to go on this tour again. Thank you Priscilla!
Such a great tour. Really really informative and friendly guide called Mary. We saw a great variety of animals. Including sloths and carpenter bees.
We had a few hours to spare in San Jose and were keen to see our first sloths. This trip didn’t disappoint. Rigo was excellent and he took us around the reserve in the university grounds. We saw both species of sloth, one mum had a baby. Highly recommended if you have a couple of hours to spare.
It was a marvelous window to the bioiversity of San José / University of Costa Rica. Our guide, Priscilla, was extremely patient, always helpful with enciclopedic knowledge, emotional about nature. We saw sloths, birds, insects, learned about plants and conservation. We ended at the Zoological Museum at UCR. I would do it again if I could.
Great experience and he was super knowledgeable specially about insects We did see 2 sloths and one very close!!!
On our first day in Costa Rica rather than having a rest day we booked this tour and it was a great introduction. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We were a bit uncertain about doing a nature tour in the centre of the city but we saw loads of things (including sloths!) and learnt a lot.
Priscilla was a delight! So informative & patient with our group. I've learned so much about Costa Rica & its beauty & truly want to learn more!
