The most beautiful building in Costa Rica. Our Opera House was build between 1890 and 1897 as a cultural center and special celebrations for the high society of that time. Because it is a theater with constant activities, it is often closed for tours inside, so the visit is subject to the day of your tour being open. In case the entrance is not allowed, a visit to the National Museum will be made instead of the visit to the theater
The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum is a museum in San José, Costa Rica. It is located in a subterranean building underneath the "Plaza de la Cultura" and is owned and curated by the Banco Central de Costa Rica. The Museums of the Central Bank of Costa Rica manage, preserve, research and outreach the Archaeology, Visual Arts, and Numismatics collections of the Central Bank of Costa Rica. They offer their visitors permanent exhibitions and a dynamic program of temporary exhibits that are related to their heritage. They are housed in an extraordinary building located in the heart of San José.
San José is the capital and largest city of Costa Rica, and the capital of the province of the same name. It is located in the centre of the country, specifically in the mid-west of the Central Valley, and contained within San José Canton.
In 1813, the Spanish Courts gave San José the title of city and, as such, required a temple that would honor the Catholic faith. This was the reason why it was decided to build the current metropolitan cathedral. The construction of this first temple began in 1825 under the supervision of Eusebio Rodríguez, who had designed a longer and wider temple with masonry walls. The church was inaugurated in 1827 and received the title of cathedral in 1850, when Monsignor Anselmo Llorente y La Fuente was appointed the first bishop of Costa Rica.
La Sabana Metropolitan Park is located in downtown San José, Costa Rica. It is the country's largest and most significant urban park. La Sabana is considered "the lungs of San José" by Costa Ricans. Covering an area of 0.72 square kilometres (0.28 sq mi), La Sabana Metropolitan Park is adjacent to the city's core districts, offering green space and recreation to the residents of San José. Several important institutions and organizations are located within or adjacent to the park. La Sabana Metropolitan Park was officially inaugurated in 1977, though its origins go back two centuries. Manuel Antonio Chapuí, the parish priest of San José at the end of the 17th century, donated several plots of land in the Mata Redonda District "in order to favour Costa Rica's interests". Since that time, the area has been used for recreation and sports activities.
Enjoy shopping and haggling for thousands of beautiful handicrafts at the San Jose Municipal Handicraft Market, a veritable maze of aisles packed with colorful souvenirs to take home. All products offered are handcrafted by true Costa Rican artists. Here you can find a wide variety of jewelry, Wood carvings, t-shirts, hammocks, coffee and spices, bookmarks, butterflies in frames, sloth bears and thousands of other objects.
The National Museum of Costa Rica invites you to learn about the cultural and natural history of Costa Ricans, from pre-Columbian times to the present. Its exhibition rooms show the varied collections in the fields of national history, archeology and natural history, which for 135 years has been the oldest in the country. It carries out temporary exhibitions on artistic and cultural themes and has a varied agenda of activities throughout the year. The Museum is located in an emblematic building, declared Historical Architectural Heritage and a symbol of the abolition of the army in Costa Rica. In case the National Theater is closed, it will be replaced by the National Museum

Our guide, Able, was very knowledgable with positive energy. The tour provided a good overview of the culture and history of San José.
My friend and I booked a very expensive private tour through Viator while we were in Costa Rica. We were anxious to see the waterfalls and the volcano that were promised as part of the tour. Our tour guide arrived 1/2 hour late saying he had a flat tire. During this time we were waiting in the sun in an open parking lot. Our tour was led by an 18 year old boy who had never led a private tour before and had never been to the waterfall site (we know this since he told us this). Although we had told him we didn't wish to go in the snake display, he ignored our wishes and entered anyway. We walked through and then had to wait for him to finish his visit. Having never been to the site, he was unfamiliar with the layout and seemed more interested in taking pictures for himself than leading a tour. Several times we had to double back on our route since he had led us the wrong way and we had to remind him to slow down since he had set a fast pace for two women well over 70. He didn't seem to know anything about the waterfalls or the history of the site. When we left the waterfalls we headed to the volcano. Even here he was more interested in talking to the Spanish visitors than giving us any information about what we were seeing. After our walk to the volcano, he suggested seeing a Gold Exhibit which was at the park that he had never seen and seemed anxious to be able to see. This was about 2:45pm. We were supposed to be at the airport (according to our schedule) by 3:30pm and we were a minimum of an hour away from the airport. We arrived at the airport about 4:15pm. Fortunately we had enough time to make our flight. We were VERY disappointed in this tour. While we did see the sights as promised, the tour guide was not up to the job. He told us he got this tour as a reward for doing well in group tours. I wish him well with his group tours, but I would not recommend him for any private tours until he has had some training on how to conduct them.
Excellent tour, we learned about the history of Costa Rica and enjoyed a lovely lunch. Butterflies at the museum were a nice surprise!
Excellent history overview of the city, province, country and region. Great value, great sites, educational and informative. Well worth it for inquiring minds, history buffs and lovers of travel.
National museum and theater Excellent guide Very knowledgable and personable.enjoyed lunch. Good pace for day
The tour guide, Luis, was the absolute best! I wanted to do this tour as part of my birthday trip and he made our first day in Costa Roca so memorable! He was of course very knowledgeable of all the sights and even provided additional insight for other questions we had. For my time, I really enjoyed learning about the culture and seeing all that San Jose had to offer. We also had an amazing lunch with such a great ambiance. I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone going to Costa Rica whether it’s your first time or nof!
Jerry was knowledgeable. It was him and us in a car. A few downfalls. The restaurant only had Spanish menu. Had no idea what I was getting. Jerry tried explaining but was not accurate. No water was given to us as in the what to expect. He took us to a private shop which was us and the shop owners which was uncomfortable to purchase something. We are not shoppers so didn’t appreciate that. Otherwise to see the city was a very private tour and was informational.
This tour was more than we expected. There is a lot of history in the country. Highly recommended tour.
Luis was a fantastic guide! We learned so much about the culture and history of Costa Rica. The length of the tour was perfect, and we really enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant with authentic food. Luis was patient and very knowledgeable. The museums were gorgeous. Exploring San Jose was a real treat!
The tour was great. It was the right amount of walking and mini bus riding. our tour guide was so nice and informative. He was a younger gentleman who knew his city and country. He was very accessible to answering questions. His English was superb . A great day to get to know the city of San Jose.
The tour included a lovely local lunch at a charming restaurant. Luis was engaging an an excellent tour guide. He was able to tailor the day to our preferences!
Loved it! We did multiple tours, all different companies and this was our favorite. Luis was sweet, patient and answered ours and my daughter’s questions. Very knowledgeable and personable The lunch was amazing and probably some of the most authentic tasting food we had.
Luis, our guide, was full of interesting facts and was so kind in adapting his pace to ours. We got to see parts of San Jose we never would have seen without his knowledge, like the amazing family restaurant that tasted and felt like coming home, or the astonishing gold room in the art museum. We can’t recommend this tour or Luis highly enough!
Good overview of the city by a knowledgeable and helpful guide, Alberto. Particularly enjoyed the art and history museums as well as the delicious lunch..
Not worth the money. You spend most of the time walking through a museum and lunch was not very good.
Giselle was an amazing tour guide - so funny and informative. We felt so well looked after and the tour at the National Museum was especially great! We highly recommend this tour and if you are lucky enough, Giselle as your tour guide!!!!
Wow, definitely one of the best tours we've been on! Mario was an amazing tour guide filled with so much knowledge and very transparent. He is super friendly and took us to see all the popular sites in San José. He was also very punctual with the tour schedule that allowed us to get the most out of the time we had. He drove us around San José at the beginning of our tour after we were picked up and at the end of our tour driving back to our hotel to drop us off. He pointed out buildings and gave us great information as we drove. Then, we parked to walk around San José (Central Market) for a couple hours. We stopped to drink some coffee inside the Teatro Nacional which was delicious and made the experience much more personalable! As we walked around the city he gave us historical facts of Costa Rica. We also went to the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica where he also gave us a guided tour of each room, which was so nice! It definitely helped us get a better understanding of Costa Rican history and culture. Walking around the city with Mario was great! We felt safe and comfortable with him. Afterward, we had lunch at a nice little restaurant called Café Otoya by the Mexican Embassy. Overall this was a great tour and we definitely recomend this experience, especially with Mario! The weather was also beautiful and made our time great. Thank you, Mario! We will leave Costa Rica with wonderful memories! Pura Vida!
We had a wonderful time with Alberto today. He is a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. We learned more than we ever could have on our own. San Jose has such rich history and wonderful people. Lunch was fantastic too!! Our driver was also very good and the van comfortable.
Highly recommend this tour. Guide was excellent. Passionate, knowledgeable and bi-lingual. Really enjoyed it
Excellent guide, excited to share the history and culture of Costa Rica and the San Jose area. Provided a great perspective of the successes and the challenges of modern CR. Truly, a wonderful representative.
The city tour by car was very nice. Alberto was very friendly and drove with knowledge of San Jose. The pickup was punctual, the lunch included was very delicious. A good learning time of history and art.
Highlights Tour guide Alberto. A very informative and enjoyable guide. Vehicle comfortable. Very helpful in all things. Company should make clear that certain items of the tour may not be open or bypassed because of time constraints. We found out National museum was closed after arriving, parking and walking to the building. This caused us to miss a stop at the market. The lunch said it would be typical for Costa Rica in an historical building. Although the lunch was excellent it was a buffet in a modern hotel. Fortunately Alberto did not let these things ruin it for us. Great guide.
Our tour guide Alberto was very knowledgeable about history and culture of Costa rica. This was a perfect way to end our week trip to this beautiful country. Our guide answered our many questions and told interesting stories about CR. We enjoyed the walking, the museum, and the traditional meal.
Alberto and Eugene were great hosts. I truly enjoyed learning more about the culture and history. I can’t wait to explore more with them as our hosts this weekend.
Alberto was a fabulous guide and took his time to answer all our questions with a smile and insight. We had the pleasure of spending the following day with Alberto on a private day trip to Jaco Beach where he gave us an excellent experience. Ask for Alberto and he will make you feel like his priority. Thanks Alberto for two memorable days!!
Excellent way to start our visit to San José! I booked this tour for myself and my twin boys (10 y/o) as a way to start our time in SJ. Mario, our tour guide, was incredibly knowledgeable and thorough, as well as entertaining for the boys. We visited the Teatro Nacional, the Museo del Oro and the Museo Nacional. Mario know so much about Costa Rican history, that we left the tour feeling like we learned so much about this beautiful country. Mario's tour company offers dozens of tours, and I would absolutely book them again!
What a fantastic tour of San Jose! Mario, our tour guide, picked us up at our hotel right on time and proceeded to give us a driving/walking tour of the city of San Jose. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the area and history of the city and the country! The 2 museums we visited were packed with local history and artifacts, while the lunch we ate was very authentic. If you have a day to spend in San Jose, you can’t go wrong with this tour! Would definitely do it again.
Save your money, tour is very short and the most important places are closed. I'm so upset that I wasn't partially refunded for wasting my time.
OUr guide, Mario, was fabulous. He was incredibly knoweldgeable and passionate aobut sharing information about the city. He knew a lot of history and was able to bring to life the culture of the city. We also had a great lunch!
This was a lovely little tour of Costa Rica's capital city and a great glimpse into the general history of the country. Our small group was able to cover most of the main sights, like the Plaza de la Democracia, the National Theatre, the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, the National Museum, and the Metropolitan Cathedral of San José. The meal at the end of the tour was absolutely delicious, and worth the tour alone. Michael, our tour guide was super, very kind and accommodating. ¡Muchas gracias!
My husband and I had the best experience learning about San Jose's culture, food, locals and educational system. Luis was extremely knowledgeable and polite. He had the most friendly and passion when describing his country. I will definitely return and will recommend this tour. The National Theater, museum, park and restaurant was amazing!
Mario was an excellent guide. He adjusted the tour for our interests and was a fountain of knowledge. We learned so much about San Jose and about Costa Rica. A great introduction to the country!
Luis was a very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide who took time to explain things about Costa Rica that we might have never learned. He answered all of our questions and also explained things as we went through the museum, adding to our experience. The lunch was at a restaurant nearly hidden from the street view, but had the best food! Highly recommend.
Had a wonderful private city tour experience, the guide from Greenway tours was very professional and had excellent communication skills, the tour was part walking and part driving, it was a good 4 hour tour with the mixture of visits to museum, architecture and city tour. My daughter enjoyed history and buttefly garden visits. would highly recommend this tour especially if traveling with children, had a pleasant experience...
Informative tour and very accommodating tour guide given some limitations in walking. Lunch was outstanding as well.
Our guide was very good and quite well informed. We got a lot just listening to him talk of the country. We were picked up at our hotel, then drove into town. Unfortunaltly as bad as traffic is and the fact we were out by the airport cut down on our time in town. Gerardo did a great job explaining displays in the museum and in reagrds to the National Theater. Lunch was at a local restaurant in town and was very good.
My guide was not only knowledgeable and passionate about his country but he also made the tour fun and entertaining. I learned so much about Costa Rica’s history, it’s coffee culture and how it became one of the first countries without an army. During the half-day tour, we visited historic buildings like the stunning Teatro Nacional, modern museums filled with interactive exhibits like the Jade Museum and walked through some of San José’s most iconic and interesting neighborhoods. Mario, my guide, shared with me an insider’s view of San José and I was able to discover some of the city’s hidden gems. I loved that I was able to tailor the tour to fit my specific interests. What really impressed me about this company was their willingness to go above and beyond. I was flying from Tamarindo to San José with limited time and they offered to pick me up at the airport instead of at the hotel to start the tour. My flight then got canceled last minute and I called them at 7am to let them know I did not know how or when I would get to San José. I was traveling solo and they were not only understanding but incredibly helpful and recommended a bus service from Tamarindo so I could get to San José and picked me up at the bus station 5 hours later than the original plan. They then modified the tour to make the best of our limited time and the fact that we had to do the tour in the afternoon instead of the morning. They were fantastic and helped out and above all showed me how amazing Ticos can be! They really cared about making my time in Costa Rica wonderful.

We moved the tour to start at 1:00 to accommodate our schedule. They said that wouldn't be a problem, but when we did the tour it was shortened and we were not offered a choice of which things we wanted to see. It was still good, and our guide was great, but it was over priced for what we did.

Thanks to Mario our guide. My husband, my 23 year old son and I loved our private tour of the city. We recommend Mario to all.
El recorrido es muy interesante visitar el Teatro Nacional, los museos y el recorrido a pie y exquisito almuerzo en Nuestra Tierra. El Guía Gerardo Masis muy amable y conocedor de su trabajo. Felicidades y Gracias
