I was a bit wary of signing up for this tour since I am travelling alone. But the entire experience offered a wonderful sense of kinship with my fellow travellers, from a wide range of countries. The Poas crater was only visible for a couple of seconds, but it was well worth the climb. My lungs got a good workout with the steep climb up to a nearby lagoon, although the cloud cover obscured our view. The La Paz waterfalls are stunning, and a nice interlude before the coffee plantation. The last pit stop of the tour — Cafetalera Zamorana — was a three-generations-old coffee plantation. The tour of the plantation and the drying, roasting process was thorough and impressive. I am a food journalist but I came away with a lot more knowledge about coffee than I had previously. Overall, our tour guide, Don Victor, was excellent. He was seasoned, knowledgeable and passionate, which is what you need to make a tour like this a departure from a run-of-the-mill experience.

This was such a great day! Our guide Luis was friendly and knowledgeable and was an all around great tour guide! Our driver was very punctual. We were the first pick up at 5:40 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Santa Ana, which was a bit early, but I understand the need to get on the roads to beat the traffic. The schedule was as follows: - 4 hotel pick ups - 50 minute stop at a Soda for breakfast. We ordered before arriving so food arrived right away - Paos volcano and lagoon. We were so lucky! It was rainy and cloudy, but the sky cleared up temporarily while we were there and we got to see both. 30 minutes later in was socked in and you couldn’t see the crater at all. - Le Paz waterfall. Don’t miss walking behind the waterfall! So cool! - Souvenir shop. Bathroom break - Coffee plantation. Two and a 1/2 hour tour and we learned so much! There is a small cafe where you can grab a pastry or sandwich before the tour. - We were the last to be dropped off and we were back just before 5:00. Such a great tour!
Great pick for the full day tour…. Beautiful nature …. Big thanks to our driver and guide Marcella, she made sure we r comfortable and super helpful with any requests and questions. She s also very knowledgeable about this regional we visited. Had a great time …
It was a great experience! Well organized, and worth it to explore around San Jose. Just be prepared that you have to reach one of the specific meeting points for pickup and drop-off. Other than that, we had a great guide to show us around!
The Volcano, waterfall, and coffee plantation were great. However, the tour guide was terrible. The tour guide was not helpful, did not tell us how many minutes we had at each spot and did not tell us where to meet back up.
This tour was amazing. Our guide, Victor and our driver were amazing. They were nice, informative and took us to see some amazing sights. Definitely recommend them ans their tours!
This was a good day out, and the trip to the volcano crater was worth it in itself. La Paz waterfall was ok. It would have been good to go to the gardens, but this was not included. I did not expect to enjoy the Zamorana coffee plantation but that was excellent also. The lady at Zamorana was excellent, full of enthusiasm and held us rapt for the blind coffee tasting.
This was a great tour. While heavy clouds prevented us from viewing the Poas Volcano Crater, we had a great day overall. The guide, Luis K., was fantastic and knowledgeable with great information throughout the tour. The Coffee Tour was an excellent part of the tour.
Our guide, Viktor, was fantastic and very helpful. He gave us great tips on what to do before arriving and constantly looked out for our group to ensure we were comfortable. We all really enjoyed the experience and would definitely recommend it to others.
This was a super nice day! We got to eat at a famous strawberry restaurant (Freddy), see a waterfall, see half a volcano (it was very cloudy unfortunately), and finally go to a coffee tour. The coffee tour is truly the highlight, so well explained and demonstrated, the staff are professionals! Worth the money for sure!!
When I booked the trip, lunch and water are included but it was changed on the final day of confirmation. It was OK as long as it was stated before the booking. The trip was about seeing the volcano and not the fog. Guide did not verify to make sure everybody placed an online order of breakfast. He is not totally 100% engaged to the group but just another day for him. For sure all of us are disappointed not seeing the volcano but fog, and the disinterested of the guide to the group.
A great all round day! Even though the volcano was not visible our guide, Luis, made it really interesting and helped everyone learn about the flora and fauna. The coffee experience was amazing and definitely worth the trip.
I felt this was a good way see multiple attractions in one day as a solo traveler. The trip was slightly different as we only stopped for breakfast. The coffee plantation was very informative and the guide did a great job explaining each step in English and Spanish. Unfortunately we did not see the crater as it cleared up after we had walked back to the van.
Breakfast spot was great, but food took a long time to come out. La Paz waterfall stop was beautiful! Due to weather, we could not see the crater at Poas, yet we were expected to stand at the viewing area for 30 minutes in the cold and rain with zero visibility. I wish there was an alternative option. We made a stop at a touristy gift shop. Finished at the coffee tour. We arrived at 11:40am and were told the tour would being at 12pm. It did not start until 12:30, and didn’t wrap up until 2+ hours after. Although it was informative and neat to see the coffee plantation and production, it could’ve been shortened significantly. The tour was mainly aimed to convince you to buy their coffee at the gift shop at the end.
Great tour! Nice people. Well organized. Would definitely recommend. Great experience.
Victor was a great tour guide! Although it was cloudy and we couldn’t see the crater, it was a great experience. The falls were beautiful and we really enjoyed the coffee plantation tour! Great day!
Really good day tour that covers a lot. We were unlucky with weather so couldn't see the volcano crater but the waterfall and coffee tour were excellent and our guide shared some photos and videos he'd taken last time the volcano erupted
I would recommend this excursion. The only thing is that weather might not permit the volcano watch. We were lucky to have a nice view. The sky clear the intense fog for just a few minutes. Come prepared to do a long walk.
I highly recommend this tour company. They have great communication from booking and throughout your tour. They have comfortable transportation with friendly and knowledgeable guides. We have had 2 other tour companies cancel or just not show up. I wish I had booked all of tours with Inside Tours.
Great guide and tour had many stops for sightseeing. I was picked up in a timely manner and was able to get back to my hotel in the afternoon.
Depending on cloud conditions, you will not see the volcano or the lake. Not the tour company's fault!
Puck up good. 10 mins from our hotel easy to find, drop off good. A vote was taken and no lunch stop was made as we had a good breakfast on route paying ourselves. Good day out dry all day not sunny. Lots of information from guide on route. Sadly Costa Rica is having much more rain than normal. Lots of clouds around, could not see the crater at all or lagoon, but nice walk to it lots of information given. La Paz waterfall ok just a stop and look. Coffee plantation and process was good learnt a lot and saw whole process. Shame about the weather but that is not trips fault.
Was notified after pickup that we wouldnt be attending LaPaz waterfall due to the road being out. Breakfast was not included in the price but was tasty. Poas volcano and the lagoon were not visible from the overlooks due to clouds. (I was told that it's usually hit or miss, but it is in a cloud forest so my experience may be the norm in certain seasons). The hike around the mountain was nice. Note: It takes a bit of stamina to complete due to the elevation change, but the trails are paved and grippy. The coffee plantation tour was excellent because of the tour guide. She provided complete multisensory experience answering all our questions about the process and product. Overall, its a nice way to spend a day around San Jose. Might try Irazu next.
A well organized tour with an English speaking guide, well aware of the area providing detailed info about local traditions and surroundings.
We had an amazing day! We started the morning off at Doka coffee plantation, learned a lot about coffee and enjoyed samples of all their coffees. From there we went to the volcano and the lagoon but unfortunately there was too much cloud cover to catch a glimpse of these beauties. The last part of our day at La Paz was absolutely beautiful. There are a bunch of steps to climb but well worth it to see the 5 waterfalls, butterflies, rescued wildlife and enjoy a delicious lunch! Shout out to Abner our driver for 3/4 excursions! He was the best!!!
This was a great tour... Due to tge weather we first went to La Paz waterfall... It was a cloudy morning.... At the Poas there was a moment the clouds openex up nicely to get the best view... We got a Funny guide who made sure we had a complete experience... Beautiful area... Loved it... It was a nice experience...
This tour was really disappointing and it was obvious our guide was poorly organised. Pickup was on time however it was all downhill from there. We were told first stop would be for a pastry and coffee but the place wasn’t ‘ready for us’ and we were not allowed to buy coffees. We then went to a different place and were told we had 40 minutes to order and eat because we were running behind. We ended up being there for 1.5 hours waiting for another tour group. Then headed to the volcano, where we received very minimal information about all the paths to take to see lake etc. On the way to the waterfall our guide proceeded to give us all the information about the volcano, after we had left so seemed rather pointless. The waterfall was just beside the road and while beautiful we hardly needed a tour to see it. Upon leaving the waterfall I asked if we would be visiting the butterfly garden as per the ticket I was sent, the guide said “no, that’s old information” We were then asked to choose a dish for lunch from a non English menu on the guides phone so we she could pre order lunch for everyone. However that didn’t happen and once we arrived to the restaurant the order was placed and we waited a fair while for our meals. We then visited a coffee plantation for a tour and coffee tasting before heading home. Overall a very disappointing experience. Tickets and your information should be updated to reflect the actual inclusions as we didn’t get a chocolate tasting or visit the butterfly garden. We had plenty of time to do everything easily in the 12 hours if the tour was better organised and managed.
The trip experience was good, the tour guide Jose was excellent. The Poas volcano is worth seeing it. I recommend the tour. I booked the tour from Viator and the tour was organized by Inside Tours Costa Rica. Viator is a good and trusted company but MAKE SURE that Inside Tours Costa Rica IS NOT YOUR TOUR OPERATOR. You can change the company during the booking process. Although the tour bus was passing by from my hotel, they refused to pick me from hotel. They ask me to take taxi and go to another nearby hotel. It was sad, after paying so much for the trip. The entire day I was feeling UNSAFE knowing the fact that the tour operator is not helpful.
To check the weather to see whether the vulcano will be visible or not, because if you book a few days in advance that the chances are not good , you would not book that trip! The tour at the coffee farm saved the day, because it was excellent. It is a pity that when taking these tours: La Paz falls or sanctury or Poas that so much time is lost in traffic. Though you have other travelers to chat with it takes the fun out of the visits.or makes the experience less memorable.
For a company that is supposed to be prompt, they arrived 35 minutes late to pick us up. The guide did not meet us until our first stop. Her information about coffee was good. We then went to LaPaz waterfall and stopped on the side of the road for us to take a picture. Then we went to lunch. Then to Poas volcano that was covered in clouds so we couldn’t see anything. We did not go to butterfly farm or chocolate tasting. Trip unfortunately was mostly on the bus. We were in traffic quite a bit. When they arrived so late to pick us up 1 person in our group couldn’t go because she was worried about getting back late and had a commitment. They would not refund even partial payment. I’m sorry but I would not recommend this company.
VERY disappointing!! We were instructed for pick up at 6am, the bus did NOT show until 6:35am. They did NOT take us to the butterfly garden or the chocolate tasting. Stood outside on the street to see the waterfalls. Tour ended 5pm an hour early. No commentary to tell us what we were seeing while on the bus ride. Get an uber and have them show you around
Percy was a very enthusiastic and passionate guide. The tour van got caught in traffic so Percy changed the pick up point and ran a few blocks to pick us up and took us to the van . He made a consscienscious effort to learn our names. Then we went papa valcano we’re he explain some facts and perused up . It was very cloudy at first at the two craters . So he done a clearing dance and finally it cleared enough to see the first crater . Then on to the coffee plantation which was very informative. Lastly the butterfly garden were Percy was very familiar and explained some of their habits .
Great tour guide and excellent views. Had a great time seeing the Poás Volcano and the coffee plantation. The water falls also has an excellent view.
It was pretty good but the tour guide seemed to be in a hurry the whole time even though we had more than enough time. He even rushed one of the people on to the bus 10 minutes before the pick up time even though they were not ready (he went into the hotel to get them 10 minutes before time to get picked up). We never saw La Paz so not quite sure why it says you do. We saw one waterfall on the side of the road and got out but that was it for waterfalls.
Víctor was a fantastic guide, very knowledgeable about history and culture. On the way to Volcán Poás we stopped a restaurant with an absolutely delicious breakfast! We then saw La Paz waterfall and a coffee plantation. I would absolutely recommend this tour to others!
This company along with the Coordinators for this tour are irresponsible, lack professionalism, dishonest in providing customer service and scammers. They did not honor a paid tour after they received correct information from me with confirmed receipt then disappeared with no valid form of accountability of communication. They dont even have a local business building in Costa Rica so that there is no real contact. They wouldn't even respect our effort and time being first time customer and travelers. Poor service do not use them.
This was a such a great experience. Nela was an amazing tour guide. She is extremely passionate about her job and it shows. The experience of witnessing an active volcano and then a beautiful lake 15 minutes away was breathtaking. The coffee learning experience was also very informative on the process of making “ Great Coffee” we learnt a lot . This tour is a must especially if you get Nela to be your guide 🙏🏻😎
Our guide Nela was amazing . She’s very passionate about her job which makes it so much easier to do such an amazing job. The fact that she had to speak English to those who didn’t speak Spanish and then also speak Spanish was twice the job. If you’re going to book this tour which was fascinating , interesting ( especially the active volcano ) and also refreshing , make sure that Nela is going to be your guide .
What an excellent day! Wear a jacket it was cold going up mountain. It was good exercise walking up make sure bring water.
We took a big family trip and Jorge was our tour kid. Unfortunately, the Poas Volcano was closed due to eruptions. Instead we stopped for a delicious breakfast!! We headed to the La Paz waterfall which was absolutely beautiful!! We then took a trip to see the Metal Church in Grecia which was neat and unusual since it was made completely of metal. We were then taken to see the world's largest oxen cart and got to see how they were made in a factory completely powered by water. We then stopped in Sarchi for lunch and experienced our first earthquake. It was a great trip and I would definitely recommend Jorge and Inside Tours!!
The Soda we stopped at had an incredible view, out door option, and delicious yet reasonably priced food. The waterfalls were cute. The coffee tour was top notch (Doka/Starbucks), and the o cart wheel factory was super interesting with authentic artists we could watch work.
We couldn't go to Poas due to the eruption so the agency gave us another tour option including coffee farm, waterfall, metal church...It was nice but we bought a tour with a coffee tasting, they took us to the Starbucks coffee farm and had no coffee tasting...it´s just a farm, they could have taken us to a costa rican farm, starbucks is everywhere...Waterfall is beautiful. Our tour guide was Maria Saenz, very nice and she explained many things to us. Driver Fernando is also very nice!
I definitely recommend this tour if you’re staying in San Jose. It’s a great way to see the volcanic crater, the waterfall, and so many local sites in one day. However, I would like to note, breakfast is NOT included in this tour, you must pay on your own. I didn’t take any stars away for they because it was a great experience, I just want future travelers to be prepared to spend no more than $10 per person on a nice local breakfast. Do go on this tour and enjoy, I recommend!
There is not any breakfast included as the Viator advertisement says there is! Deceptive and a waste of money. Our guide spoke very little English and almost always in Spanish with a ton of driving and very few stops.
the guide was very helpful and had great knowledge, explained lots of things about the volcano. The coffee tour was pleasant too. The waterfall is beautiful but it's just in the middle of a road. The activity itself was very easy. Just spend a lot of time in the van. It was a very nice trip, especially to see some activity of Poas.
Extremely bad . Arrogant guide and event did not happen but charged thr money ( volcano ) . I would say this is the worst experience with Viator
An excellent trip even though the description is not exactly accurate. It does not include breakfast but, no matter, it was not expensive where we stopped before going to the Poas Volcano. That was extraordinary to see! On the way to the Coffee Plantation, we also made a stop for a traditional lunch (also not included) in the mountains which was really good. Our guide, Marcella and driver, Victor, were excellent and made the trip fun with the other 18 people. I will caution that we were the first to be picked up at 5:15 AM and then we rode around picking up the rest of the group for over two and half hours. Perhaps the tour company could find another solution regarding pick-up and drop-off arrangements.
This tour did quite a bit in a short amount of time. Arturo was friendly and knowledgeable and took good care of our group. The stops were all quite short, but sufficiently long to feel like you got a good sense of each place and learned a bit.
Would not recomend A .half a day tour turned into 14 hour day . Wet and cold Never saw the volcano. All clouds. They picked me up late after not getting any sleep and dropped me last .
Terrible Customer service. Never showed to pick us up. Sent over 10 messages to confirm time. No response from them.
