Guide was friendly, but I would have preferred more time focused on siteseeing and less on shopping.

Itinerary
A day filled with the aroma of coffee will be our reward as we visit the largest coffee plantation in Costa Rica, known as the Hacienda Doka estate, located on the slopes of the Poas Volcano. Visiting this Doka coffee plantation will allow you to learn everything about the process and good practices related to this crop, as well as on our tour of the coffee farm we will observe its machinery and discover the step by step of seed germination for the first cultivation of the plants, the development process of the plant and up to the point of harvesting the mature grain, we will also learn about the history of the farm, the production and varieties of coffee plants, the geography of the area and the traditional way of cultivating the coffee bean, it is very important to note that being in the natural and cultural environment of this coffee plantation will make you want to enjoy an exquisite cup of coffee while having an exquisite typical Costa Rican breakfast.
We will go to the beautiful POAS VOLCANO, whose main attraction is that it can be accessed to the edge of it. Not only does it have one of the largest craters in the world, but it is located in the mountainous forests of the Central Volcanic Mountain Range and we will be able to learn from the gas emanations, ecosystem and vegetation. On the way to the Volcano you will be able to notice its different microclimates and the great diversity of agriculture, we will be able to observe a great variety of plantations and cattle farms at the same time that we will have a spectacular view of the Central Valley. And the lagoon of its crater will leave us in love with the desire to return. The complete stay in the Poas Volcano National Park will be approximately 50 minutes which are distributed in: 10 minutes in the initial talk, and information, 10 minutes walk to the viewpoint of the Volcano crater, 20 minutes of fixed permanence in the viewpoint and another 10 minutes on the way back to the transport parking lot.
La Paz Waterfall Gardens Natural Park is the most popular nature tour in the San José area with five famous waterfalls and the largest animal sanctuary in Costa Rica. It is by far the best place to see wildlife in Costa Rica, it is the most popular ecological attraction in Costa Rica. Lush tropical jungle, flowing white rivers, spectacular waterfalls, birds, butterflies, monkeys, hummingbirds, snakes, felines and frogs. At La Paz Waterfall Gardens Natural Park and Wildlife Refuge, you're guaranteed to see all of that and more. at the beautiful falls, you will be able to take beautiful pictures. Zero stars The company cancelled the tour on my and my dad without informing me. I was waiting for the bus to come to pick me up in the hotel lobby for 30 minutes When I call the company they say they can not do the tour today Tgis unprofessional behavior wasted my day And has tarnished my impression
I really enjoy the whole plan. Totally worth it. I joined a group of 5 people from different countries. It was a great experience. The only thing I didn't like was the driving from our driver. He kept pushing the gas and revving the car the whole way up (hours) in a very unnecessary way (without shifting gears). This caused dizziness for some of us. But still give them 5 starts.
What an amazing day! It was a long one but worth every minute of it. The coffee plantation was beautiful, had a wonderful breakfast, and included lots of information. Although you don’t always get a clear view of the volcano the walk is still beautiful. I didn’t see in the description that we were visiting a wildlife refuge but that included lunch and a chance to see some other animals. The waterfalls are gorgeous but so involve a few steps.
Our tour guide Fila was extremely knowledgeable. He has great knowledge on both Costa Rican history and facts as well as the different animals we seen. Try and book with Fila. He was great
The tour operator informed me of the cancellation far too late. I received the cancellation notice at 9:00 PM the night before the tour. By that time, I was already preparing to go to bed, so I did not see the message until the next morning. They should have informed customers much earlier. In addition, I had sent a message through the chat asking about the meeting time for the next day, but my question was completely ignored. I found this tour company to be unprofessional and disrespectful, and I would not recommend them.
This was a great experience. Our tour guide who was also our driver was amazing and very knowledgeable. The food was great and various coffee samples and snacks throughout the day. Would definitely recommend.
Great experience!!! Fila, our guide, was very knowledgeable and kept us on a tight schedule. I can't believe we got to see a volcano up close. We also enjoyed our time at the coffee plantation and the Peace Falls. The scenery was amazing. I'd recommend this for anyone interested in nature and who enjoys that great outdoors.
Filander was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable and informative. He was very patient and eager to answer our questions. He told us about many hidden gems of costa rica and places to eat and see. It shows how passionate he is and how much he enjoys sharing his wisdom. I was picked up on time from my hotel around 6:15 am. We drove to the coffee plantation where he walked us through the farm. We had an excellent breakfast and then drove to poas volcano. It was foggy with no visibility when we reached. He told us to visit the lagoon since he knew it was clear and knew the crater would clear out by the time we returned. He was right on spot and we saw the gorgeous views with full visibility. We then drove to waterfall garden where we saw different wildlife. We finished off with the 5 stunning waterfalls before we started our drive back to our hotels. Filander explained us about different plants, flowers insects, animals. Overall he had an amazing knowledge about everything. He even provided great options of other tours that I could take and how to book them. Overall It was a great day. Absolutely worth doing for someone visiting Costa Rica.
Really nice tour, especially for a first time visitor like me. The coffee and breakfast at Doka were amazing and learning about the coffee making process very iinteresting. The Poas Volcano is absolutely incredible and it should not be missed, even if the view is very affected by the weather. La Paz Waterfall is a beautiful place, a bit sad to see the animals in cages but unfortunately they are rescued animals that can't be reintroduced in the wild. I think most of these places can also be visited without a guided tour, but if you don't have a car or just want to relax, this tour is a great option.
The tour was amazing. Our tour guide Hernan was extremely knowledgeable and interesting. There was a lot packed in to the day
This was a very well-organized and fulfilling tour. It covered all the must-see highlights around San José.We started at Doka Coffee Estate with breakfast and a coffee tour, then visited the Poas Volcano and Botos lagoon, and later explored La Paz Waterfall Gardens with animals, lunch, and waterfalls. The itinerary was packed but well-paced. Our guide, Fila, was experienced and explained everything clearly. Overall, it met my expectations and I would recommend it.
Filander was our driver/tour guide and we have nothing but good things to say about him. He’s been a guide for over 40 years and he has a wealth of knowledge. We started our tour at 6am and the first part of the trip was quick paced but that was purposefully intended to really enjoy the scenic volcanic crater but the entire trip was memorable. Our day was overcast so we didn’t get to see the crater but we got to see the beautiful waterfalls. Great experience and super fun, we got to meet a couple from Canada which was a nice addition!
Terrible Company! They steal your money. Thy pretend to go pick you up at your hotel, to say that you did not show up for pick up so that they can cancel free of charge. Horrible management, will not answer the phone or reply back to emails. Would not recommend unless you want your money stolen from you, and worse, lose an entire day on your trip. 0 stars if I could. Still trying to get my money back all this time later.
Great tour. Guide Mario was really amazing, funny and informative. I can recommend this tour with ease.
What a lovely day! I don’t think I have enjoyed 14,000+ steps so much in my life! The guide, Hernan, provided knowledge, insight, and great stories the entire day which enhanced the experience beyond measure. Definitely a must do and see!!!
The tour operator was super supportive and goad at explaining everything. I really enjoyed the views and the transportation was quite comfortable
Herman was a terrific guide. Very friendly and seems to know everyone. Great information too! I would use them again.
A very nice experience. All the venues were interesting. The breakfast at the Cafe Doka and lunch at Peace Falls were very good. The tour guide was informative and friendly.
Well organised tour, guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. The day was easily one of our favourite of the trip and the best tour we had in Costa Rica.
It's a long full-day trip, but worth every minute. Wonderful destinations, great meals (very few tours include a full breakfast and lunch), and stunning views both at Poás and La Paz Gardens. Our guide for the day (Charlton) enjoys what he does and it shows. I would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone either basing their CR vacation in San Jose or adding a day before or after another longer tour.
This tour is packed and WE LOVE IT!!! It started with the nice aroma of Doka coffee, having to visit the very active Poas volcano then ending our tour with the serenity of La Paz Falls..great way to experience Costa Rica!
The tour organised by Marbella Tours here in San José was well planned, the guide (Filandro) was very engaging and thoughtful, the sites and narratives given were interesting. Luckily no cloud cover at volcano crater so spectacular views. Only down-side is the obligatory stop at tourist-trap souvenir stores when real shops and buying options exist nearby.
We spent most of our week exploring Costa Rica on our own, but for our last day we decided to book this full-day tour—and it became one of the highlights of our entire trip. From the moment of pickup to drop-off, everything was fantastic. Our guide, Mario, truly made us feel like family. He picked us up directly at our hotel in an impeccably clean and comfortable van, setting the tone for a seamless and relaxing day. The tour began at Hacienda Doka, where we enjoyed a delicious breakfast buffet with fresh juices and, of course, outstanding Doka coffee. The guided walk through the beautifully manicured property and learning the entire coffee process—from seedling to brewing—was fascinating and unlike anything we had ever experienced. Next, we traveled to Poás Volcano, and we were fortunate to visit on a clear day. Seeing directly into the crater was absolutely unforgettable. Compared to La Fortuna, Poás is hands-down the best place to truly experience the crater up close—an incredible natural wonder. We also enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch, which was included in the tour and perfectly timed to recharge after a busy morning of sightseeing. The final stop was La Paz Waterfall Gardens, which was the perfect way to end the day. The waterfalls, lush flowers, and abundant wildlife created memories we will cherish for a lifetime. The entire day—from the incredible sights to the food, drinks, comfort, and attractions—was nothing short of perfection. If you’re considering one guided tour during your trip to Costa Rica, this is the one to book.
This is a well-thought out tour with great places to see. We enjoyed our day even tho it was a bit long. Wouldn’t have changed a thing.
It’s a long walk to the steam volcano crater. It is constantly monitored for sulphur dioxide levels If it reaches very high then they evacuate the place. There a souvenir shop and cafe near the parking area. It’s an amazing experience
It was a full day! Ronny & Jose took good care of us. Ronny was super knowledgeable about the various aspects of our tour and gave us insight into Costa Rica history and present day life. Jose kept us safe on the roads through the mountains, rain, and busy City streets. The volcano was unique and Paz falls were beautiful and powerful! It was a long day and you need to be up for lots of walking.
I only had a few days in Costa Rica, and I'm extremely glad I booked this tour to fill one of the days. The tour guide, Filander, was incredibly knowledgeable, funny, and fun to talk to. The tour was well-organized, and all three sights were beautiful!
The tour was nice. Be prepared to have the volcano covered in clouds and a lot of steps at the waterfall. I would recommend.
We had a wonderful time on the tour. It was a wonderful opportunity to see some of the natural highlights of Costa Rica on an easy day trip out of San Jose.
Amazing tour! Our guide (Mario) was great- very knowledgeable, with a good sense of humor- he made sure we're having a great time. The three main attractions (Volcan Poás, Doka Coffee tour, and the Peace Waterfall) were absolutely breathtaking. In addition to the breakfast and lunch provided, we got some very yummy treats throughout the tour. This was an absolute highlight of our trip. Thank you, Mario! Highly Recommended!
Currently driving back from Paos volcano with Mario. He is driving and watching a music video with a customer sitting in passenger seat during rush hour traffic in San Jose. Very dangerous situation. Passenger is also blaring Latin music from her phone and dancing in her seat. Only 4 people on this trip, 2 women from Columbia and my wife and I from the US. 80% of conversation was in Spanish, no discussion of Costa Rica culture , history or description of sites. Spent more time in souvenir shop that wasn’t on schedule than we did at coffee tour. My wife and I were basically ignored on this trip Don’t recommend Marbella and especially Mario.
Our guide made this trip the best experience we could have ever asked for. He knew so much about the land, people, food, roads and from the beginning he exuded an air of positivity and childlike energy that he represented everything about Costa Rica and it's Pura Vida! We are grateful the universe crossed our paths with him!
Crook company! They told me. They were going to give me a full refund. Since the volcano was closed! They never reach back out to me. I had to reach out to them. To see what the deal was with my refund. I got the screenshot of all the previous messages saying they would! I wouldn’t recommend nobody dealing with this crook of a company! Bad business
Terrible! Terrible tour company. No communication whatsoever. I messaged them and emailed them days before the trip to confirm the pick up time. Nothing. No contact back. Then they have the nerve to cancel the tour at the very last minute overnight. Very unprofessional and would not recommend booking with this company. Especially when there are many other companies who do the exact same thing. Would give 0 stars if I could. Terrible tour company.
This tour wont have the Poas Volcano, the Volcano has been closed for months!!! They will let you know about this until the day of the tour, so you pay for the full tour and you do not get it….
Even with the volcano being closed, this tour was just right for my day. Our guide was very knowledgeable and provided an excellent experience. The food provided was plentiful and tasty. The coffee plantation tour was very informative. The waterfall gardens were amazing! Beautiful scenery, great animal encounters, just lovely all around. I would warn others that there are LOTS of stairs. Mostly going down, with a section going up at the end. Would not be a great choice for anyone with knee issues. Otherwise, I would recommend this tour and even consider repeating it myself on a future visit.
We booked this tour dreaming of dramatic volcanic landscapes, nature, and a full day of adventure. Instead, we got a strawberry, a sticker on our chest, and a free lesson in Spanish we didn’t sign up for. Let’s start with the star attraction – the Poás Volcano. Beautiful, majestic… and closed. We found out at 10 PM the night before that we wouldn’t be going there because it was “currently inaccessible.” Cute detail: it had already been closed for weeks when we booked. Selling a volcano tour without a volcano? Bold move. Also, the tour start time was a mystery worthy of its own Netflix mini-series. The website said 6 AM. We had to write the company ourselves. They casually replied: “Pickup is 7:15.” Thanks for keeping us in suspense. The guide? Very nice. Very Spanish. Despite booking an English-speaking tour, the majority of our journey featured an extensive Spanish monologue with one of the guests. When we kindly asked for English, it lasted for about ten seconds – and then volvió al español. During the long hours on the bus, we understood absolutely nothing – and it really created a strange atmosphere. There was this awkward silence, like we were just passengers along for the ride, completely out of place in a tour we had paid full price for. Stop 1: Doka Coffee Plantation Breakfast: okay. Souvenir shop: $14 chocolate bars. And then came the stickers. Yes, we were all given very visible chest stickers, which we later realized were there so the guide could earn a little commission if we spent our money in the shop. Honestly, if we’re advertising products, we should get a cut too. Stop 2: Supermarket “tasting” experience The listing promised cheese, strawberries, and wine. What we got: • 1 strawberry • 1 micro-wine (possibly homeopathic?) • 0 cheese Stop 3: La Paz Waterfalls Lovely nature, animals, good buffet. Very little explanation – we were told to walk the path ourselves, which we enjoyed, but again: not what was advertised. By 2 PM, the tour was officially “done.” This was supposed to be a full-day tour, advertised as lasting until the late afternoon – nearly 6 PM (hotel drop-off). So much for that “extended experience” they promised to make up for the missing volcano. And then came the final surprise: “Hey everyone, we’re now an airport shuttle!” Yes – in the middle of the return trip, we were suddenly informed that we’d be making a detour to the airport to pick up other passengers. For us – with very limited time in San José – this was just perfect. Because why spend time enjoying the city when you can join your tour guide on a completely unrelated errand in heavy traffic? We circled the airport multiple times, trying to locate the passengers, and what should have taken an hour became two hours of frustration. In short: • No volcano • No English explanations • No cheese • But plenty of awkward silence, confused glances, and chest stickers • Bonus: unwilling participation in Costa Rica’s least glamorous shuttle service We paid €140 per person – nearly €280 total. Next time, I’ll spend that money on 10 bags of coffee and a volcano screensaver and call it a day. Funny now? Kind of. Worth it? Absolutely not.
They never picked me up! Finally called, and they just said the park was closed so they werent picking anyone up!
The tour guide picked us up on time. Was very friendly and provided great information during the coffee tour, and animal sanctuary. If I had known the volcano was closed ahead of time would have canceled as that was the main reason for booking this.
This was a very nice tour. The Coffee Farm was interesting - we saw the plants close up, and also saw the manufacturing process for coffee means, with lots of good explanation from our guide, and relaxing, with a tasty breakfast. The shop there is a bit pricey, but with some beautiful things I didn't see in as beautiful form anywhere else in Costa Rica. The Poas Volcano, unfortunately, was disappointing. The fog was so heavy nothing was visible at all. We saw some lovely, rich vegetation on the walk, but no view. We also spent in my opinion a bit too long hanging out in a shop before going to the Volcano (maybe hoping for the weather to clear?) There were two parts to the Peace Falls. The first, is a 'wildlife rescue centre'. Here you get some good views of birds and sloths e.t.c. There are also monkeys and big cats. I have two say, I found the cages too small and some of the animals looked depressed, so I wasn't so keen on this. There was a lovely butterfly house, though. And a beautiful outdoor area, where humming birds were feeding. This was gorgeous. The falls themselves are stunning. The path is beautiful and natural, leading you right along the edges of the waterfalls. These are not delicate little falls - but crashing, exhilarating ones - a real thrill! Overall great to have three good stops in one tour, all within easy reach of the Capital.
We didn’t manage to see the volcano due to the fog unfortunately but the rest of the tour was great. Lovely breakfast at Cafe Doka. The La Paz gardens were lovely. We had loads of time and never felt rushed. Communication beforehand could be improved however. The pick up time of 630am was only confirmed after 10pm the night before.
Perfect trip. Especially the Poas volcano is something you must see. As well the LaPaz waterfall gardens with great collection of animals, reptils and birds. And when you even have a perfect guide…
It was beautiful on the top of the hill to see the poas volcano.I smells the sulfur from the volcano.I t was amazing to gaze upon an active volcano Wonderful time.
Absolutely beautiful and great experience to view the gems of Costa Rica. Lots of stairs for the waterfalls, but worth it. Our driver was amazing.
It was an extremely long day packed with lots of activities. A good breakfast and lunch. I really enjoyed it and certainly made some new friends! If I had any criticism it was at times information overload. Too much to take in. But you couldn’t fault the guides knowledge of his subject.
Is an interesting activity, especially if you travel with children. They have the opportunity to learn a lot, to see new and interesting things and also to exercise. Quite intense, due to San Jose traffic! Very well organized, everything in time, no cuts of activities, excellent guide, Mario. We were also lucky, the day was excellent for volcano view, food very good . I definitely recommend it.
Mario was a great host and picked us up on time. He was friendly and knowledgeable. He accommodated my older parents and they loved the tour, as did I. I would highly recommend Mario and this tour group. The day was all planned and the food was good.
We took a day trip to Doka coffee farm, Poas volcano and La Paz waterfall. It was an excellent trip! Our guide, Mario, made the trip so interesting. It was a small group (4 in our group and another couple). Crazy San Jose traffic; we were glad Mario was at the wheel. Highly recommend. Mario was very informative and so kind to everyone.
Mario was por tour guide and he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We were fortunate enough to have his undivided attention. The tour was amazing
