Jose was great and informative guide. Although suitable for beginners was quite a trek to do if you are not used to being on horses! However kids loved it so worth it for that reason!

Itinerary
Our most popular tour activity is a pleasant half day horseback ride to Xunantunich. The tour begins at the stables, a family-owned horseback riding establishment where over 45 horses call home. Your transportation to the stables from San Ignacio is included.
When you arrive, meet your local Belizean guide for the day and then mount your horses to depart! The ride to Xunantunich includes a well maintained trail through a large private farm and along the banks of the Mopan River in the village of San Jose Succotz. You will cross the river on an ancient hand-operated ferry, and then ride your horse up to Xunantunich. When you arrive, prepare to dismount and let your horse rest while you can spend as much time as you desire exploring Xunantunich by foot. Tour duration: 4-6 hours, depending on speed and desire to explore. No previous horseback riding experience is required; riding helmets are supplied. Weight limit: 250 lbs (113.4 kg) per person. Capacity: We can take single riders, couples, or groups of up to 15 people. There is no minimum amount of people needed to book.

The guide was very patient & accommodating. Cannot brag enough on the horses! They were patient, friendly, easy to guide! Ask for Louigi the horse and the tour guide was amazing!!
Jose is a wonderful, knowledgeable and funny guide. He was so much fun to have as our guide. So much knowledgeable about the horses we were on, the area and history. He made this trip so memorable for us! He adjusted the tour when he found out that we had already seen the temple and made sure we saw things we had not on our previous tour. Thanks to his knowledge we got to see a couple of Toucans, an entire family of Howler Monkeys,a pigme Owl and a silver fox was spotted by people in our group.
This was a lovely ride along the river to the hand cranked ferry and then up the hill to the ruins. The guide Jose was very knowledgeable and we learned about the plants and the history of the Mayans. El Castillo is very tall so be prepared.
We didn't do the horseback ride, just the tour. We went in a van. Great experience. MayaWalk provided a delicious lunch after the tour, and our tour guide, Junior was pleasant and informative. Go in the morning! the sun later in the day is STRONG!! Can't recommend MyaWalk enough!
The people working with the horse farm were very safe fir the horse to the rider. The guide Jose was hilarious, helpful, and made a fantastic day of it. Would definitely recommend him and Maya tours
We only did the ruins tour , our guide was very impressive, he was knowledgeable, Very thorough and answered every question, he loves his work and you can tell that he has a passion for teaching and educating people
Fabulous ride and tour. Lovely ride by the river. Saw toucans and spider monkeys on route. Old school river crossing with hand crank felt authentic. Our guide Jose did a lovely job showing us the ruins, teaching us how to get a tarantula to come out of its hole, letting us trot and canter for those skilled. Wonderful trip and highly recommend it was a great way to see the archeological ruins while making the trip there fun. The horse parking lot was great.
Our tour was actually canceled due to weather but the tour provider MayanWalk reached out and helped rebook, offering several options. Although I can't rate this tour, the customer service was great!
We were booked for the horse riding to Xunantunich... booked it months ago. They called us the night before ( once we were in Belize) to tell us that the stables had double booked the horses and could not accommodate the trip. ( they use a 3rd party for the horses) Whilst this was probably not Maya Walks Belize fault... it was still incredibly disappointing. They did try to offer us alternatives, but we were not interested in just horse riding through a farm. Thankfully, we had our own car and were able to get there under our own steam and hired a guide right there at the ferry crossing. If you are booking this tour double, double check that the stable has not double booked . The trip was not cheap and was paid for in full. It took Trip Advisor 3 days to start processing the refund and another 3-4 days before it goes back into our account .
This farm was amazing, accommodating us at the last minute, while we found out that our ATM tour was cancelled due to heavy rains. The staff was amazing, as we showed up, making sure that our daughter, who had never ridden a horse before, was comfortable. They made us feel at home. Carla, our guide, was incredible, walking alongside us and guiding us through the forest and along the river. She made sure we were safe at all times and gave an incredible history of the Xunantunich ruins. I would recommend this tour for anyone!
The Xunantunich tour with Edeoni was amazing. His stories and personality made the trip. We’ve literally booked two other tours for this trip with MayaWalk because of how great this one was. 💜
Although the overall experience was amazing, it was slightly overshadowed by the poor logistics by MayaWalks. The bus that took us to the ranch was 35 mins late picking us up in the morning and then 45 mins late picking us up to take us home. This transportation is arranged by MayaWalks. Despite this, the actual tour was incredible. Miguel from Morningside Ranch was so friendly and knowledgeable, and the horses were beautifully cared for, loved and well trained. I would recommend anyone considering this tour to book directly through the ranch instead to ensure a smoother pick up.
They cancelled our tour the evening before because of an ‘emergency’. This Viator tour is managed by MayaWalks tour operation. We contacted the stables directly (St leonards) and they sad it’s not true, just it was fully booked. We booked an afternoon ride direclty and was great. Mayawalks did not do any effort to offer other horse rides. The da before are ATM tour (via Viator - mayawals) got also cancelled because to much rain in the caves. They can not do anything about it but they told us de morning of the tour when we we ready to go. Would also be nice if they gave us a heads up before… It’s something they should mention in the Viator description of the atm cave tour. Conclusion in dutch for reisjunk readers: vind op google maps St Leonards Tours en boek direct via de eigen website van de manage!
We had such an amazing adventure riding horseback to Xumantunich with Carla! MayaWalks is centrally located in San Ignacio and we booked our first day in Belize online before arriving. Everything from description, confirmation, transport and of course tour was professional and as described. Carla and the guides were excellent - friendly and knowledgeable - with a great working rapport with the ranch and the horses. The trail thru the jungle was beautiful and included a river crossing on a hand-cranked ferry! In our group of 6, 2 of us had never been on a horse and the rest of us were complete novices. The horses well very well trained and an absolute pleasure to ride. We all felt very safe and of course we loved the Maya site and how Carla really brought the Mayan world to life. A definite must!
Fantastic experience! Ian was amazing and showed us different things along the way. The horses were easy to ride for a beginner and was a unique opportunity.
Our guide Alex and driver Ervin knocked it out of the park. We were so very well taken care of. Alex was an endless fountain of information. Ervin had an amazing delicious Belizean lunch waiting for us when we got done. Recommend going early in the day while it’s still cool and before the crowds arrive.
Nice ride to the ruins next to the river. The ferry crossing was cool. Miguel and Carla were very informative!
The horses were tame and the riders were very knowledgeable about everything we asked and more. My daughter didn’t feel well when we made it to the site and they promptly picked her up and brought her back to the stables. Couldn’t have asked for a better ride.
Iam was great! He understood our riding levels well and wasn’t scared to push our limits. Would 100% recommend! Definitely go in the morning, otherwise you’ll be even warmer than we were!
Our experience with MayaWalk Tours was truly exceptional, thanks to our guide, Jose. His extensive knowledge of the local flora, fauna, and Mayan culture enriched our journey, making every moment engaging and informative. We traveled by horseback, and despite having several members with no prior riding experience, both Jose and Mark ensured the experience was smooth and enjoyable. Their guidance made the journey comfortable and accessible for everyone. I highly recommend MayanWalk Tours for anyone looking for a well-rounded and immersive experience in the region. Although not actually a full day we were pretty spent and needed a nice afternoon break to cool off and refresh ourselves before heading out for some evening entertainment.
Amazing trip. My 10 year old loved every minute. Guides (Jose, Mark and Rafael) were so kind, knowledgeable, and friendly. The ruins were amazing to see but I definitely think getting there on horseback through the countryside was an even better part.
This was super fun and our guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. We would highly recommend this tour!
Our guide was absolutely incredible, and we had the privilege of riding his own well-cared-for horses. His attention to safety was outstanding, ensuring we felt secure throughout the experience. He shared fascinating insights into Mayan history and the evolution of the indigenous peoples, making the tour both educational and engaging. It exceeded all of our expectations! As a family of five, including adult children, we highly recommend this unforgettable adventure.
Our guide Andy was very knowledgeable, pleasant and patient. We did not actually do the horse back ride just the walking tour of the site. Very hot but some patches of shade to recover in while climbing the tallest ruin. Enjoyed the activity very much. Highly recommend the company. Very efficient. Clean air conditioned vehicle driven safely by Ronald. Prompt pickup at our home and drop off at the end of the morning.
Beautiful trail ride through the countryside and along the river. Then, we could spend time at the ruins exploring. The guide was amazing and knowledgeable for the horse and explaining about the ruins. The horses were lovely and behaved. It was an adventure!
The staff was so friendly and accommodating. We had a couple hiccups with scheduling and they went above and beyond helping. It was definitely an enjoyable and memorable experience!
ms. karla was an excellent tour guide. very informative about the area and its history. she give you a quiet time during the ride as well to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the area. highly recommend
Our guide, Ellio, was extremely knowledgeable. The horseback ride included a lot of info about the surroundings, including types of birds and trees/plants. When we arrived to the Mayan Ruins, Xunantunich, Ellio knew a lot about the Mayan history. We loved so much we want to learn more about it. Great experience!❤️
Our Tour guide Elio was Amazing, funny, very knowledgeable and personable. Would definitely recommend him for a great travel experience and he made out trip very memorable!
Elio was an awesome guide on our horseback tour to Xunantunich Maya Ruins. Along the way, to and from the ruins, he pointed out many plants and trees that the Mayans used for medicine and in rituals. Elio knows quite a bit about the Mayan culture. It was very interesting getting this perspective of the Mayans along with the actual structures that they built. How they did that is Amazing. Elio also pointed out some animals native the the area as we rode through the forest. Iguanas, Howler Monkeys. Toucans @nd manny others were right along the horse trail. My wife rode Noah and I rode Ketura. These were very nice horses to ride. All in all it was a fantastic day of horseback riding and a tour of the Xunantunich Ruins. We would surely do it again and have told our friends about it. Thank you so much!!!!
We loved Maya Walk Tours! Horseback Riding to Xunantunich - The tour guides were very kind and knowledgeable. From giving us tips on how best to ride to sharing all kinds of info about the site. Just fabulous and so interesting! Cave Tubing - this was the perfect amount of adventure for us! Beautiful dip in crystal clear water, relaxing float down the stream, and a small bit of rock climbing and hiking in the middle. We went on a Monday which the tour guide said is their slower days since cruse ships come in Tuesdays-Thursday. So we almost had the cave to ourselves and it was fabulous! The tour guide was vary knowledgeable about birds, vegetation, and facts so we had a great time learning as well
Karla is super knowledgeable and an excellent guide. Very attentive and took great care of our group. Would highly recommend her. The ruins are amazing and totally worth visiting. The horseback ride was ok but is targeted for a less experienced rider. The horse handlers did a great job and our horses were in good shape. Saw lots of iguanas along the ride and the view of the river was nice.
The subcontracted company that provided the horse riding were excellent. But the advertised lunch that was supposed to be included in the price wasn’t. Maya tours told us that they do not offer this service and that Viator was responsible for the false advertising.
We took our tour with Albert and he was AMAZING! He had so much history to share, it really made being in the ruins come alive. I highly recommend going with a tour guide. There are things be taught us about what we were looking at that I never would have guessed. Well worth it!!
Great experience. Guide was excellent and the care of horses was great very healthy. Would use them again if we revist Belize.
We enjoyed the experience, but we did not feel that we got enough time at the ruins. This may have been due to the fact that we also started the tour late, so we were really competing against the heat of the day.
It was a great experience..learning how to kayak at the same time..going threw the caves was great..lmao falling off my kayak was the funniest..the tour was amazing..seeing the wonderful sites in the cave was a also great
Carla, Jose, and Ricky were great! Our fam of 3 had a great time! We got to see monkeys and iguanas and learn about the area on our way to Xunantunich. The horses were great, the guides were great, the site was great!
I really wanted to give Mayawalk a positive review because Karim who did our shuttle was absolutely amazing and JC made the ATM tour a lot of fun. To the point that I sent some feedback via email however, it is clear that the office is extremely disorganized and disconnected from what happens on a day to day basis and it overshadowed a lot. We called weeks before getting to Belize to give payment but were told the day before we arrived that we hadn't given any and were asked multiple times for information they needed in advance of the tours. Countless emails that seemed to get lost or weren't tracked. Unlike several other tour operators in the area, they are not set up well to do anything online or take online payments, they expect you to fill out a credit card form and send it via email (which is completely not secure) or call. But, as I stated, calling meant nothing because it was like it never happened. The tours have potential to be great, but you're going to be gambling based on the guide you get and who is in the group that day since they do not manage bad guests well and tend to cater to them. For our ATM tour, despite the great guide we had to wait 30+ minutes at a grocery store in the middle of nowhere for one late person (per the office's orders) and then were rushed out because the other half of the group had a ferry to catch later. Especially note that the Horseback Riding Tours are essentially booked through someone else so it's an extreme toss up as to who they'll send you with and what the experience will be. They can't even tell you how many people will be on the trip. Our riding tour was particularly bad because we had a guest that hadn't ridden in 30+ years but thought he was a regular old cowboy so the guide essentially led him and his wife (on foot) the whole way and ignored us. When I mentioned this to the office, I was told that although I'm experienced, my husband appeared uncomfortable, proving that they didn't understand the neglect from the guides or that the guides were actually incapable of reading guests. Just a deflection from the issue as my husband was completely comfortable the entire ride, the issue was the incapable guests that took 100% of the guide's attention. We also got a bunch of "policies" explained to us by Samantha in the office after our feedback that were 1) Never mentioned before and 2) Made it clear that these "policies/practices" are not at all followed or consistently enforced. We also had a guide message us and ask for essentially a money loan days after the tour. Very uncomfortable situation. There are many other tour companies in Belize so if we go back, I will be giving someone else my business.
We had a great experience with this tour operator. Our guides were attentive and knowledgeable. Good organization.
We had the best time! The horses were perfect, and the staff was so kind. The guide was also really knowledgeable and was able to tell us so much about Xunantunich. Would definitely go again!
We took this tour on our 1st day in Belize, and it was a great choice. We met our horseback guide Alston at Hanna Stables. Alston is a cowboy who has dreams of becoming a professional bull rider, from what I can tell he will definately make it. He was so good with our horses. It was a leisurely trot to Xunantunich through pastures, wooded areas alongside the Belize river and through the local market. Once we arrived at Xunantunich we met our second guide, Andy, who was exceptionally knowledgeable about Mayan history and heritage. He brought us to the top of the largest temple which was amazing! Highly reccommended!
This is great way to combine two tours into one. You start off going to Hanna stables and then it's a peaceful ride on perfectly trained horses. Even if you have never ridden a horse you'll be able to do this ride. After taking a hand crank farey across a river it's a another short ride to the maya site, where you'll tour around seeing a mix of excavated and covered ruins. Although this site is smaller than Caracol and Tikal, it's still a great site to visit! After you're done you ride back to the stable for a delicious home made lunch. Highly recommend!
Great Day! We rode our horse through the jungle and into town. There you can shop with the locals while waiting for the ferry. Another short walk and you are at the ruins. Our guide was very knowledgeable. Lunch was chicken, potatoe salad and rice. Nice little restaurant (clean!! with a place to wash your hands before you eat!!) Definitely would recommend.
My 5 years old and I had a perfect experience doing this activity. Both our guides were amazing with us, taking time to go with our flow. Xunantunich is a small area. To combine this with horseback ridding made the trip better. I strongly recommend to do the same if you plan to visit Xunantunich. Thank you MayaWalk Tour :)
I am so glad that we got to see Xanantunich, but getting there was half the fun! We got to ride in on well trained horses, ride a hand cranked ferry across the river and see howler monkeys, toucans and lots of iguanas! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and explained much about Mayan culture and ritual life as we toured the site. We were the only ones on the tour, so we got lots of personalized attention and even got to talk to the archaeologists from N. Arizona who were excavating a part of the site. I'm so glad that we were able to see these ruins, and I feel like we learned so much-- A+ would definitely recommend! (The included lunch was provided from the farms own garden-- tasty and filling!) Just the right amount of riding so that my backside (as a non-horse rider) wasn't sore the next day. Thanks for an awesome experience!
The horseback riding was fun though leisurely, with plenty of time to enjoy the lovely views surrounding us. The tour of the Mayan site was informative and enjoyable, with a rewarding climb to the top of one of the highest temples to enjoy the views (optional!) Lunch was plentiful and tasty!
I contacted MayaWalk Tours regarding a day trip with a friend who was coming in from the States. We decided on the horseback ride to Xunantunich Maya Ruins. Julia was very helpful and prompt in answering all of our questions and making sure we had everything we needed. Douglas, the driver, was also very helpful in answering questions about the area and the variety of things to do. Thank you for organizing such a great trip!

This was an exceptional tour. Our guide William we very knowledgeable not only of the Mayan sites but nature and Belize history in general.
