We booked at the office, both over the phone and in person, The Crew was absolutely wonderful. First was the Butterfly Farm, and then Barton Cave, The guide was completely helpful, knowledgeable, and an excellent communicator on all subjects. Lunch was welcome and tasty. Next was the Xunantunich Mayan site tour. The highlight of our trip to Belize. Again our guide knew everything about the Mayan civilization and history of the population. We aren't spring chickens and he catered to our issues. All MayaWalk tours are worth the time. You won't be disappointed. This is the second time we used MayaWalk, and won't be the last.

Itinerary
We begin our journey through farmland where you can see the Mennonite community of Upper Barton Creek and experience their traditional lifestyle. We reach Barton Creek Cave, much of which is still to be explored and stretches for miles, of which 4.5 miles is navigable by open canoe. At the entrance of the cave we board our canoes, switch on our headlights and start to slowly paddle into the cave passage. While floating deeper into the passage we learn about the geology, archaeology and Maya history of these caves. Our lights will bring crystal formations that are millions of years old to life. After exploring the caves, we turn around our canoes and float back to where we park them and complete our half-day tour with a refreshing swim.
Barton Creek Cave with Jungle Zipline: Each of our four tours offers you a return to the main platform on a 500 feet run via our jungle lift platform. This 2-hour tour is for zip line enthusiasts and combines the Explorer and Intermedio levels in over 2,700 feet of zip line, comprised of 9 runs and 15 platforms that take you over and through the jungle. Barton Creek Cave with Butterfly Farm and Botanical Garden: Here, you will be able to see flocks of exotic butterflies of various species, from iridescent blue to gorgeous orange, dazzling yellow to intriguing gray. There is also a botanical collection of over 120 species of plants, including orchids. Barton Creek Cave with Big Rock Falls: A 150 feet waterfall flowing over the granite boulders of Privassion Creek. We hike down the escarpment hidden deep in the Mountain Pine Ridge where we come to the stunning waterfall and the crystal pool into which the cascading water sprays in a cooling mist.

The cave was beautiful and the whole process of getting to the cave and back was easy and smooth. Cave was 10/10. Food was delicious. Our guide was knowledgeable about the cave and seemed to care about his job and the environment, but made comments about my husband to the driver thinking we wouldn’t understand them, and when my husband responded back to them about their comments, they surprisedly said, “oh, you speak Spanish?”. That aspect just felt a little bit unprofessional and unwelcoming, (especially having worked for years in tourism myself).
Had a great day on this tour. We explored the cave by canoe and the butterfly farm. The guide was very knowledgeable, friendly and professional. Highly recommend.
Great visit to the falls - we did a private tour and glad we did and our guides helped the young jumping off rocks and others with accessibility. Good tour guides and knowledge of Maya history.
I did the Barton Creek canoeing half day. I had already done another trip with Maya Walk so they gave me $10 off. Only five in our group as maybe not the most popular tour. Yesterday I had done ATM cave where no photos are allowed so this was good as we could paddle inside another cave taking photos. This proved to be difficult as I was a solo paddler in my own canoe. I had wanted my own canoe anyway. I have my own kayak so paddling was not a problem but maybe beginners may struggle. Dropped me back off in the town centre.
We had a terrific time with Alex. He was easy going, very friendly and went out of his way to provide us with pertinent and fascinating information on geology and history to better understand the importance of the cave for the Maya. The canoe trip was a real delight, very relaxing and allowing us to enjoy the beauty of the cave at its best. Great swim at the end of the trip. Memorable experience! Nic & Anne
Alex guided and paddled us expertly on a great fun and hugely informative c.1km canoe trip deep into the cathedral scale majesty of Barton Creek yesterday . Delicious lunch beforehand in the serene grounds with a refreshing swim in the freshwater river to top it off
A second trip with this great company today. We had relaxing canoe trip through the spectacular Barton Creek Caves. Only a minute from the car & you are in the water in a very pretty landscape. A few moments from that you’ll be in the cave for around an hour with headlights & helmet. We had the excellent Ed as our guide and paddler. We were very grateful for Ed’s help as it enabled us to focus on photos and the experience. Ed explained the geology & Maya history very well followed by a very nice lunch. Thank you and totally recommend.
Edeoni is one of THE BEST tour guides I have ever had! You should absolutely book your Xunantunich morning tour + Barton Creek canoeing afternoon tour with MayaWalk Tours and request if you can have Edeoni as your guide. As far as MayaWalk, as a company as opposed to others, I reviewed tour options online as well as walked and spoke with all the tour operators along Burns Avenue. I chose to book with MayaWalk and am happy I did. I am traveling with my mother so we chose the canoe option as it was the easiest and you don’t get wet. There is an option to swim after you finish canoeing. MayaWalk accepts credit card or cash and provides delicious coffee at their office. Edeoni is from San Ignacio and very knowledgeable about the area. He was very informative during the tour. My mom is afraid of heights and he was amazing helping her, encouraging her and keeping her calm while climbing up and down El Castillo. An unexpected surprise and my highlight was that Edeoni showed us a tarantula hole and I got to hold a tarantula. He is also knowledgeable about the different birds in the region and can point them out to you with binoculars. Lunch was great as well with rice and beans, chicken, coleslaw, a little chocolate cake and juice. After canoeing, there was another company with an inexperienced tour guide. They did not navigate the cave well and flipped their canoe when trying disembark. Edeoni was the one to help the other group. Therefore, book with MayaWalk and request Edeoni. I highly recommend booking with MayaWalk and would recommend the tour we did. Thank you MayaWalk and thank you Edeoni.
Awesome guide and driver. Marvin and Andy !! So informative and displayed such professionalism. You can tell they really love what they do ! Thank you for a wonderful adventure!!
We did the Barton Creek tour with Everell as our guide. He was very attentive to the group and helped with photos. It was a fabulous outing!
We had a great day at Barton Creek Cave with our guide Jaser who was very knowledgeable and good company! Would definitely recommend this tour for a relaxing half-day experience near San Ignacio :)
We had such a great day on this tour! We have younger kids, so they were so great in suggesting this for us. The cave was amazing and the creek was so refreshing and beautiful! The girls loved the butterfly farm. We love the picnic lunch they prepared. It was such a great day and our guides were so wonderful! Highly recommend!
We had Isael for our guide and he was wonderful. He is very knowledgeable and friendly. We loved the canoeing, swimming, and lunch. It truly was a great experience!
We were picked up early which was great. Our guide was great we learned about school system in belize. Health care. When we got to cave he was great at pointing out things in cave with laser pointer. Water was so clear. How water levels have changed over caves existence. Lunch was excellent. Which we had after swim Which we did in front of cave entrance.
We loved our tour guide Jason! What a special experience - the cave was incredible and so much more to see and learn than we expected.
This is a great way to spend half a day. Our guide O’Neil was very knowledgeable and the cave is stunning. Our guide did all the paddling and we just controlled the flashlights, so it was even more relaxing than I expected. I definitely recommend this.
Andy our tour guide picked us up on time. The drive to the caves was 1 hour so we had a chance to ask Andy about the area, culture and history of the area. He was very open with us and we shared many personal stories. The caves were outstanding. Great stalagmites and stalactites and columns. Some areas glimmered. In some spots we had to duck way down because the overhang was so low. But it was all part of a great adventure. At the end of the kayak trip we had a belizian lunch in which they accommodated my vegetarian diet. Swimming was also an option but we passed on it. And then back to home. Andy dropped my husband off at our hotel and then graciously dropped me off at another spot. It was a great trip and I would highly recommend it.
The tour advertised for half day; the actual activity would only be more like 2 hours at most including lunch. It overrated and over priced for $110 USD per person for the tour. It should have engaged more activity for such a high price tour which can even count as a half day. Will not recommend it.
Amazing time exploring the caves! Everyone was amazing our driver Kareem was super helps and informative. Edoeni our guide was excellent and patient with us. He took his time and really made our trip so memorable. We spent about 1 hour in the caves and really enjoyed it.
Had a wonderful day being canoed through a magnificent cave! Ended with a swim in the crystal clear water that flows into the caves. The water is filled with a variety of small to mid size fish and a saw a midsize turtle swimming close by. The Barton Creek area is so well maintained with labeled trees so you can learn about them. We were the only two people there with our guide so it was even more special. Our guide Jason was excellent. He as a great driver as we had to drive through two shallow rivers and on some rough roads that added to the adventure. He smoothly paddled us in the cave and provided information about the history and geological formations. A completely awesome day. Highly recommend Maya Walk tours for all you tour needs! We only had time for 3 tours but each one was well worth the time and cost.
Had a great time with our guide Richard. He was very informative, we learned so much about the history of the caves and Belize. We also had the cave and the waterfall mostly all to ourselves. Highly recommend!
We chose the Barton Creek Canoe tour so we could see a cave from the water and learn some Mayan history. With our 8 and 10 year old kids, we decided against the ATM tour. This tour was great. The cave is beautiful and not crowded this time of year. Kind of magical. We also added zip lining to the BBC tour. This is a must. We all absolutely loved it, even a couple of us afraid of heights. We did this at Calico Jacks. Tour guides were awesome. Through MayaWalk we hade one primary guide and driver for the day named Jason. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and patient with us. Thanks Jason!
Damien was amazing! So fun and knowledgeable. MayaWalk tours did an outstanding job with adjusting our plans when there was a mixup and delays! Damien was great with my 5 y/o and including her in the fun!! First class! Delicious food for lunch!! Local cuisine provided and even a fun extra of a few star fruit from a local tree. Calico Jacks for zip lining was 5stars!! Great guides! Local history and laughter for my 5y/o enjoying her fist zip lining experience!!
It was a fascinating tour. Our guides Richard and Kareem were excellent. Richard was very knowledgeable about the history of the cave.
Guide was great. He kept us entertained on the drive with the history of Belize. He was very knowledgeable. my 6 year old son listened the whole time.
Gazelle and Ben were absolutely incredible. Everything you want in a tour guide and driver. Kind, knowledgeable, incredibly helpful, and patient. They went above and beyond in every aspect of our tour and it would not have been as great as it was without them. *Wear water shoes or shoes with a hard bottom and back strap.
We were warmly welcomed by Giselle and Michael who picked us up for this trip. The trip in to the cave is very easy, just a bit of canoe paddling and you are surrounded by complete darkness only your headlamps enlighten the fascinating world of stalactites and formations.
Fantastic day out with Jason our guide. Started the day at Xunantunich Archeological Site early and gained alot if knowledge from Jason. He is very experienced and patient. Afterwards we drove to Barton Creek and enjoyed a canoe ride inside the cave. Was amazing with the structure of the cave, the absolute quietness as we were the only ones and evidence of Mayan life. We also dropped by the butterfly farm, they are breeding butterflies due to their existence being threatened. Fantastic day out, highly recommend
We were picked up in the morning by our amazing tour guide Eddie. Eddie is one of the best tour guides I have ever met, he was so down to earth, easy to talk to, knowledgeable, and funny. My Mom and I did the Barton creek cave where Eddie guided us smoothly in the canoe. In the later half of the day we went to Big Rock falls for some relaxing swimming and rock jumping! We got to enjoy good conversation, fresh coconuts, fresh mango, a delicious Belizian lunch, and of course some Rum Punch!! Special thanks to Eddie for the memories my mom and I will never forget. Highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants an outstanding experience.
We did a few tours during a 7 day stay in the Cayo area and Maya Walk Tours is definitely the company to choose! They handle all of the pre-trip organisation on Viator well, their guides are knowledgeable and their rides are comfortable. You can arrange local pick-up or meet them at their shop in central San Ignacio, and if you are driving, there is affordable day parking in a lot just down that same street. For this trip we went to the beautiful and serene Barton creek caves with our guide Abby and driver Karim. Abby had many interesting stories and shared plenty of facts from archeological research about Mayan culture and their uses of the cave, we really appreciated his paddling too. The cave is stunning with amazing stalactite formations. Go see it for yourself to really appreciate the beauty! Afterward we went to the Mariposa butterfly farm where we first enjoyed a delicious local lunch with tasty rum punch and then we got to experience the butterflies with their guides (reviewed separately). The rides are scenic and both Abby and Karim are super friendly so we enjoyed the day. We even got to stop to buy litchi’s which are always a tasty treat!
A relaxing day exploring the caves in a kano with Jason. A very good guide, where we could enjoy the caves on the kano. Jason explained a lot about why and how the maya's used caves.
Our Guide Jayson picked us up at our Hotel in the morning. He was very personable and gave us background history of Belize on the way and the story behind Barton Creek Cave as we approached. Jayson made sure we were comfortable and properly suited up for our journey. You slowly paddle into the cave for about a mile as Jayson explained everything we were seeing in detail. Each turn in the Cave brings you a different type of Cavern, from narrow areas open hundreds of feet high to areas just above your head and even large Cathedral type rooms. It was an amazing experience that I would highly recommend for all age groups. Jayson then took us the the Green Hill Butterfly Ranch were a guide from the Ranch took over. Our guide did a wonderful job explaining each area of the tour which included each stage from egg to full grown butterflies. There is a large netted room where you roam freely with the Butterflies float about you. Another area outside is a Hummingbird feeding area which you can stand only a couple feet away watching the Hummingbirds feed. Jayson had Lunch set-up for us to finish off our tour before headinbg back to San Ignacio. This was a very wonderful half-day tour that I would do again. Having a excellent guide like Jayson is a big bonus.
We went for 1/2 day from our resort, Mystic River Lodge. We did not swim at the cave, as we don't like water you can't see through, although I think it was just deep. We loved the canoe ride; however my 73 yr old sister who is claustrophobic, did not. I would definitely recommend !
Truly amazing experience! Guide was amazing! We truly enjoyed our time seeing some of the ancient history!
Our day tour with a Jeremy was truly one of the best days we had throughout our whole 9 days in Belize! We did the Barton Creek Canoe + ziplining + big rock waterfalls and It was truly a wonderful experience. The canoeing was a very relaxing experience since you’re just sitting while the guides rows for you. The zooming was super fun bc the guides were showing us cools things all along the hike like tarantulas and teaching us how to use the palm branches for roofing haha ziplining was fun and great for my first time, super safe and reliable! And the highly was absolutely big rock falls!! It was so stunning, quiet, water was warm and such a thrill. I have to say having Jeremy as our guide was also a highlight. He was so kind, funny, knowledgeable, and flexible and you could tell he really enjoys his work :) huge thank you to him for making the day as wonderful as it was! One last note is that if you’re looking for a more interactive and exciting cave experience we recommend doing ATM bc it’s supposed to be amazing though we didn’t get a chance to do it. Thank you Maya Walks!
We went directly through Mike who owns an access to this cave. Apparently there are several ways to access the cave. However, Mike provided pick up service from San Ignacio for $75 including the tour and guide. Our guide was Peter who picked us up and talked as if he was a recording. When he talked naturally, his voice was easier to understand, but when he started with information about the cave, he was hard to understand. I loved the cave. It is easy to access from a dock onto a canoe. You go in about a mile and come back the way you entered. Having access to a strong light allowed me to focus on what interested me. Peter's explanations made little sense and he was unable to explain things like how there are bridges across the water in addition to stalagtites and stalagmites. We were offered to eat at their restaurant after the tour for an additional cost, but the conditions of the facility did not inspire a desire to extend our time.
My group and I had a fantastic time with cave tubing and zip lining. The best part was how supportive and inclusive the tour guide Victor was and he was amazing !
I can't say enough good things about MayaWalk tours, from the reservation process to the office staff to our amazing tour guide Anselmo. Barton Creek Cave is an incredible experience, and Big Rock Falls was beautiful and worth adding on, but it's the people who really made this special. The staff went above and beyond to accommodate us as vegetarians, and Anselmo was friendly and engaging and so knowledgeable about culture (past and present), history, politics, natural history, and more. What an enjoyable way to wrap up our trip in Belize! Thank you, Anselmo and MayaWalk Tours!
My husband and I did the Barton Creek Cave with the Buttery Farm tour earlier this week. Our guide was very knowledgeable, personable, and professional throughout the trip. They also picked us up at our hotel. The cave was beautiful and he did a great job of going through the history and significance to the Mayans. Would definitely use this company again.
Tour was great! Everyone was nice and the views were amazing. Zip lining was a blast and jungle was beautiful. Dennis and William made us feel very safe and they were so professional. Our tour guide Giovanny was so informative, very nice guy. Highly recommend!
We did the Barton creek tour on the morning of March 4th 2020. I am bad with names so I forgot the name of our tour guide and driver but they were both great and knew a lot about the local history, local plants, current events, and were very respectful of the environment and ourselves. The tour of the cave itself was amazing and we stopped at Big rock falls after for a refreshing swim ( it was over 37C that day ). The driver went out of his way to help us make it back to our hotel on time so we could catch our bus back to Mexico. I would definitely reccomend this company and that you go see big rock falls, as well as Barton creek cave system. Thanks again guys!
My wife and I did the Barton Creek tour with MayaWalk. We had a great time with our tour guide Anselmo who was so knowledgeable, friendly and a great representative of his culture and country.
I usually hate going on tours while traveling, but oh my, this one was a treat! We loved exploring the San Ignacio area with our tour guide Ensalmo! He was knowledgeable, kind, and fun to talk to. We were the only people to book this particular tour that day but they didn't cancel, instead we enjoyed a private tour, and it couldn't have been more perfect! First we canoed in Barton Cave, we chose to do Barton instead of ATM because it was closer to San Ignacio and we were only there a limited time. I am happy we did! It was quiet and peaceful and not overrun with tourists. Then we went to Big Rock Falls and again, there were only 3 other people there! We swam up to the waterfall and it realy did not seem like real life! After our swim, Ensalmo busted out a homemade meal and some delicious rum punch... ugh so perfect! I can't wait to visit again, thank you so much for the amazing experience!
My experience with MayaWalk Tours started weeks before our actual trip as I began to research different companies to use for our cave tour/zip lining while in San Ignacio. They have a message/chat function on their website which was incredibly helpful. They always replied within minutes to my many questions about the cost, logistics of the day, etc. We did the zipline/cave tubing full day trip and it was an excellent experience! Our guide was Daryl and he was phenomenal! I mean, really exceptional! We only had 5 people in our tour which was really nice. The tour was supposed to leave at 8am but they emailed the night before and asked us to come at 6:45am so we could get ahead of the cruise ships tours. They wanted us to have a peaceful experience in the caves versus visiting them with hundreds of people who were all taking and shouting. I really appreciated that! We did the zip line first and it was really awesome. There are 6 runs (the first is kind of a little practice run). It was our 6 year old daughters first time and they guys were so good with her. She was able to do 3 of the runs all on her own and LOVED it! The last 3 were very fast and long so she went tandem with one of the guides. One of the runs can get up to speeds of 50mph! The runs were beautiful thru the jungle and over water. We are so glad we added this on to the cave tubing. After the zip line we did the cave tubing. It is a bit of hike to where you put in your tube, but we loved hiking and hearing about all the insects, animals and plants. Daryl was very knowledgeable and made the hike fun. I would highly suggest wearing shoes like keens or something similar. A traditional water shoe will NOT cut it on the hike. One lady was wearing that type of shoe and she struggled with the rocks and roots. Make sure the shoe has a hard bottom and can get wet as you wear them right into the water. Bring a change of dry clothes that you can leave in the van and change into after the trip so you are dry for lunch and the ride back. We applied sunscreen and bug spray before we left for the trip. Once you get the mouth of the caves you are in the water for about 2-2 1/2 hours. It goes by very quickly. Daryl had incredible information to share about the Mayans and their rituals in the caves as well as the cave formation. You float along leisurely and literally just relax as you take in the sights. After the trip you can change and then we headed out to lunch at a nearby restaurant which was included in the price of the day. We had local cuisine which was very tasty. I highly recommend this tour, MayaWalk and if you are lucky enough to get Daryl, you won't be disappointed. As a side note, my shoe literally fell apart at the end of the tour and I still needed them for upcoming days. Daryl took us to two different stores to find super glue so I could fix my shoe! Awesome customer service!!
I had major difficulties booking tours with mayawalk through TripAdvisor. Beware, you cannot actually change dates or cancel until they confirm your trip which they don't do until the very last minute. So, if you have any doubts or need to make any changes whatsoever, do not book online. You can get better prices from other tour companies that provide more personal service. Just walk down burns street and find a guide who is available. Mayawalk is probably the biggest and the tours are large, if you want a smaller tour, find a different provider. They are professional, but they don't care about your business like the little guys do.
First we zipped through the jungle on ziplines, then floated through the amazing caves with our incredibly knowledgeable guide. We were 4 adults and 5 kids (ages 9-15) and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. The zipline is double-cable and there are technicians at every level who do all the hooking and unhooking for you, so it was fun and easy even for this nervous mama! And the caves are a must-see. It's a bit of a hike in and you carry your tubes with you, but the trail is level and well maintained...not strenuous at all - even for our littlest ones. They top it all off with a delicious lunch in the picnic area and a comfortable drive back to San Ignacio. It was a day well spent.
Great Guide, a nice knowledge of the mayas, perfect transport, a little excessive all the same for only an hour in the cave, but we were only both with Jayson so it was a privileged moment!
We had a great, relaxed and very informative kayak tour with Giselle through this beautiful cave. Giselle is very personable, relaxed and patient. It was a special experience when we entered the cave in total darkness and silence and inevitably listened to ourselves. Swimming in the beautiful lagoon full of mineral water was great. But beware of the cleaner fish, they will nibble on you if you don't move for a while. :-D Afterwards we could optionally round off the experience with juice straight from a coconut and learned a lot about the fruits and plants from a very friendly gentleman on site. Highly recommended!
It is the second time I have done this tour, the cave is impressive and our guides Jason and Michael explained everything in detail. Despite being told that they do not give the tour in Spanish, both spoke perfectly well in Spanish and so we could understand better and enjoy the tour much more. Then we were taken to the zip line where we were treated amazing as we traveled with 2 children and were always attentive and helping at all times taking care of their safety, helping them lose their fear and have as much fun as adults. Everything was amazing! You can't miss it.
