Tikal is an amazing site and our guide Reggie was very knowledgeable. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was that I thought the pickup at the border could have been better coordinated. We had to call when we got back and waited another 25 minutes for a driver to show up. The guide in Guatemala c Should have called the office in Belize ahead of time with our arrival time as we got close.

We just got done with the tour with my two older children who are 13 and 15 years old. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and spent lots of time at each of the individual sites at the various ruins and really explained the history of everything and great detail. The resort we stayed at did offer a tour, but they got there after we arrived and were long gone before we even had lunch. If you have older children that would have interest in the history and details of everything I would highly encourage this tour. This guy really knew his stuff and could get in a couple layers deep if you had additional questions on everything. It is certainly hot, so you certainly want to have water and make sure you’re in shape to be able to hike the steeper stairs and many of the places did not have handrails.
Quick trip from west part of Belize. Active archaeological site , neat history and structures. Knowledgeable guide.
Regge was great about providing history, while also giving time to explore the ruins. The visit allowed us to see everything we wanted to see. Crowds were limited other than one temple at the very end, but our guide got us up before the crowd descended. Walter also made it easy to get through the boarder crossing.
Excellent day trip after a little messing about at the Belize border. William, our guide, was great. Giving us what we needed to know, but leaving the details to answering follow up questions. The tour was well paced and very interesting and the lunch afterwards at an excellent restaurant just outside of Tikal.
We did this tour from San Ignacio. Maya Walk Tours did a excellent job getting us to the border. The border crossing went very smooth. One driver took us to the Guatemalan border crossing where another the tour guide and driver picked us up. Border crossing can be confusing and challenging, but Maya Walk Tours did an amazing job coordinating the crossing and passing us off to the tour provider on the Guatemala side of the border. Our tour guide Rony, was super knowledgeable and did a excellent job walking us through the Tikal ruins. It was well coordinated with enough time at each of the Mayan ruin sites to hike/climb/walk to get to the top of Ruins. Rony's passion for the ruins and knowledge was very evident as he explained each Mayan ruin we stopped at. Rony was also very knowledgeable on the different type of birds we saw, always on the lookout for different bird species. For those birders out there he would be an excellent tour guide.
The Tikal tour overall was great. We started our morning driving to the border where we passed customs and immigration, and went into another tour guide‘s hands. drive in Guatemala is a little rough due to road conditions, but it is a very pretty drive. Getting to Tikal there are a lot of pathways and our tour guide, Danny took us through some cool trails as to give us a little bit more of the history of the site. We climbed multiple structures, and Danny was very knowledgeable about the history of the Mayan civilization and specifically Tikal. He gave us plenty of time to explore on our own and afterwards we went to a local restaurant to eat a very scrumptious meal. The drive back again was a little rough, but we were all very tired from such an exhausting hike that most of us slept. Passing immigration going back into Belize was a breeze and the only downside was our driver from Maya walk tours being 30 minutes late. In the future, I would probably opt for a smaller family owned company to take us on this tour as maya walk is the largest in the area and they are honestly a glorified taxi service. Will probably not use them in the future.
A fascinating place and Maya Walk organized a great trip. Our guide was knowledgeable. Everything, including the border crossing, went smoothly.
We had a wonderful day at Tikal Maya Ruins. Miguel was a terrific guide, very friendly and knowledgeable. He was very passionate when describing the story behind each temple. We did not feel rushed to end the tour and enjoyed every moment of it. Amazing journey!
We had an amazing day at Tikal. Our guide Phillip was knowledgeable and accommodating. The experience was seamless from pickup to drop off.
For the Tikal site I would give 5 stars but for the guide, minus 2! A fascinating place but a guide with no interest in giving visitors a good experience. Most unfriendly. Gave minimum of information. Was always walking way ahead of the visitors that he was supposed to be taking around. He did have plenty of time for chatting with other guides though! Maya Walk Tours was helpful with organising a pick up from my accommodation. It was costly and it was a very early start for me due to my location but I was keen to see Tikal, so was happy they could do it. The drive to the border didn't take long. Both Belizian and Guatemalan immigration were quick for the two people who were doing the tour. However, there were two others in the vehicle who were just having a transfer from Belize to Guatemala and they took a while at the border. I asked about a toilet whilst on the Belize side but the driver said it's on the Guatemalan side. When I got to that side I was told it's on the Belize side!! They did take me to a service station though. It was a long and winding road from the border to Tikal. There was a stop along the way which seemed to be a breakfast stop for the Guatemalan driver and guide! There was also a delay with the two people doing just a transfer because they were trying to get entry tickets online for Tikal. The lunch was 'ok' but in a rather shabby looking restaurant. The two of us doing the tour were the only customers. At the end of the trip, the Belizian driver dropped me off near the Maya Walk office saying someone else would take me the rest of the way to my accommodation. After walking over to the office it turned out this same driver was supposed to take me all the way. So I had to wait a bit for him to return. Although it was not a long wait, it had been a tiring day. My tour of Caracol with Maya Walk Tours was great but I can't say the same for Tikal.
A great tour; we truly enjoyed it. Danny, our guide was great. The village itself was spectacular, and the views from the tops of the temples were breathtaking. Highly recommend.
It was an amazing tour! The team was great and really helpful! The hike was very beautiful and the lunch was really good.
William was an exceptional tour guide. His depth of knowledge on everything from the natural world to Guatemalen history to politics, and of course to the Tikal site was incredible. It was a great tour
- a well-organized and informative tour. mostly seamless, despite border crossings. our guide, william, was quite good - the entire tikal area is super impressive!
Our family (kids ages 8 and 9) loved this trip with William. It’s a long day but totally worth it. William did a wonderful job of telling us all about the Maya city, rituals and history. It fun, active and educational!
This is a very popular destination, so quite crowded. Our guide Reyes not only kept us all together but made sure we were absorbed in the cultural history throughout the day. This was an intimate introduction into a vanished culture.
What a great day even with some rain and limited long distance view! MayaWalk Tours was fantastic and highly recommended! Our drivers Walter and Jaheem were great and Jaheem even gave a small gift of my favorite Marie Sharps hot sauce! Nice touch! Rony, our tour guide was amazing! Very informative about Tikal and past and current culture and politics during the Mayan era and modern Guatemala. Tikal was expansive and fascinating! Climbing the temples to see the views from above was worth all the steps. We had the best day! The lunch at a local restaurant on the way back was delicious and authentic. Visiting Guatemala was a definite highlight and we want to see more of the country in the future. Thank you for the memories!
Seamless transition from pick up to drop off in Guatemala to head to Tikal. Tikal itself was amazing. Probably the best Mayan ruins I’ve ever seen. It’s incredible how you can climb a bunch of the structures to this day. I loved seeing temples above the trees from the tops of other temples or pyramids.
The Tikal part of the tour was great but I was expecting a bit more during our drive to and from Tikal to San Ignacio. The driver and guide made no efforts to engage with our group during the drive. Once in Tikal, the same guide shared a lot of interesting facts and brought us to some really nice part of this very big park so in the end we had a great day. The restaurant we stopped at on the way back was great and there was plenty of options to chose from.
We had a great time! They were punctual and friendly. Our kids loved it and the guide was really good about waiting for us and our small children’s pace. Lunch was delicious and the transportation and broader crossing was smooth and easy. Would book with them again!
Whole experience was well worth the cost. The guide and drivers were fantastic and helpful through all stages. Our guide Regge was super knowledgeable about Mayan culture and nature around Tikal. Lunch was also top notch
Highly recommend this tour when visiting Belize. You get the opportunity to go up most temples/pyramids. It was quick and easy transport. We got picked up at hotel and got dropped off at the border who Walter proceed to pick us up and take us to the guide. Highly recommend this tour.
The Tourguide was very informative and helpfull. Always ready to answer all questions. We were lucky with the weather.
MayaWalk Tours did a great job on our recent visit to San Ignacio, Belize! We did two day trips with them. The first day, we went cave tubing and zip lining, and also visited the Xunantunich ruins. Our guide Edeoni was very friendly and knowledgeable. We learned a lot about Mayan history and he even climbed Xunantunich with us to explain the carvings in detail. He pulled our cave tubes through the entire river so we could relax and enjoy the scenery. The zip lining was safe and fun. The second day we did a day trip to Tikal and the Belize/Guatemala transitions were very smooth. Our guide Reggie quizzed us on Mayan Math and talked a lot about the history of Tikal. MayaWalk Tours also drove us to and from Belize City and the rides were very smooth. I highly recommend MayaWalk Tours to anyone visiting the San Ignacio area of Belize!
It is quite demanding adventure, lasting about 12 hours. However, for me, it was well organized and led by experienced and helpful guide. This trip fulfilled my expectations. However, I wish we sight a bit more the Maya pyramids in Tikal.
We did the Tikal day trip and the half day cave tubing with Maya Walk. Both were unforgettable: went very smoothly indeed, with very friendly and knowledgeable guides on each trip. We were lucky to have essentially private tours for both. Other tour companies might have canceled if they hadn’t sold enough tickets but Maya Walk went ahead even though it was only our family signed up. So it was incredible value for us. The experience was absolutely five-star. Would recommend without hesitation and would definitely go with them again.
Excellent trip, albeit a long one from San Ignacio. We were taking to the border and to cross to meet tour guide on the other side, a little bit daunting not being accompanied but was easy enough. Long car journey to get to Tikal but well worth it. Guide spoke great English and was very knowledgeable. Border crossing on the way back was the same, but we had to wait around 30 minutes for pickup due to unexpected traffic - a little scary but all good in the end.
Tikal was better than we imagined. Amazing Mayan ruins scattered throughout a beautiful tropical forest. Our guide explained the history and significance of what we saw and helped us understand the rise and fall of the mighty Mayan society. Our guides walked us across the border and took care of all the fees and paperwork. You could visit the site on your own but it would take much more time and you wouldn’t gain half the understanding.
Communication was excellent from before, and during the tour. Transportation was prompt and air conditioned. The tour of the park wasn’t arduous but enlightening. Lunch was fantastic!! Choices were varied to suit everyone’s tastes. Tour guide was average, but adequate.
Great tour. Very well organized. The lunch after was very tasty. Our guides were very helpful and friendly. Highly recommend. Fair price for the experience as well.
Another wonderful tour with Mayawalk, this time to Tikal. Organisation very smooth, the day worked like clockwork. Guided across the border, good transport, great guide and a lovely lunch. Tikal ruins a real spectacle.
The Tikal day tour with Maya Walks was a fantastic experience. We had 2 weeks in Belize and with a hire car, travelled to most Mayan ruins independently but used Maya Walks to see Tikal as we couldn’t take the hire car over the Guatemalan border. The trip was very well organised with clear instructions where to meet and what to bring and the price advertised included everything - border crossing fees, park fees, lunch, taxes etc. The Maya Walks rep assisted with the border crossing and introduced us to our Guatemalan driver and guide. The group size was pretty small (7) and the minibus very comfortable. Tikal itself was amazing, not only for the ruins themselves but also the extraordinary amount of animal and birdlife to see - howler monkeys, spider monkeys, toucans, a silver fox etc. Our guide was really knowledgeable and pitched the guidance really well covering interesting points but not overloading with too much detail. Lunch on the way back was at a restaurant, good choice offered and decent food. Good value for a full day out.
Excellent from start to finish. Great drivers (this matters a lot), smooth transition to Guatemala, beautiful scenery, knowledgeable and personal guide, lunch was delicious and of course Tikal was amazing. Tips: bring snacks, lunch is late but snacks and water available for purchase in Tikal. You must exchange money though if buying anything. Gift shop on the way takes cards.. Wear nonslip shoes. Be prepared to get sweaty and binoculars are great for bird and monkey sightings.
We spent 5 days / 4 nights in San Ignacio. We took 3 tours with MayaWalk and had them pick us up at BZE airport and take us to the ferry terminal in Belize City. Every interaction and every tour we had with them was fantastic. The trip to Tikal was seamless and easy and we spent hours there. Would trust this company with our travel experience any day.
The tour was very good. We did not to worry about the boarder crossing as they did take care of it. Tikal is beautiful and not that hard to walk around it. Lots of steps but manageable. The lunch was great…Guatemalan food was natural fruit juices were delicious!
MayaWalk is an EXCELLENT tour company in San Ignacio. We used them for 2 tours and 2 shuttles and were very happy with our experience. Their communication over email/text was great, and all of the drivers/tour guides were very knowledgeable about Belize. I really appreciated being able to use one company for everything. Our first driver Karim gave us a mini tour of the town of San Ignacio, which was very useful during our stay. We appreciated the restaurant recommendations. We did the Tikal day trip and it was amazing! Very easy crossing into Guatemala, where we met with a Guatemalan guide. Tikal is very large, so there is a lot to see. One of the best parts was being able to climb to the top of many of the temples! We were scheduled to do the ATM cave, but due to rains/high river levels, all caves were closed. We were very disappointed, but MayaWalk offer us other tours for that day that we could do. Not much they could do about water levels, but we appreciated their flexibility with rescheduling. Great company!
You can't go to San Ignacio and not go to Tikal, and Maya Walk was the best. They took the worry away with the few extra things they did. It was so early in the morning that the offered to stop for coffee, asked if we wanted to stop for breakfast tacos and burritos, made regular stops for restroom breaks, and took us for a lovely lunch (included) at a local restaurant. Everything was in order for crossing the border and they gave us an opportunity to exchange money in case we wanted to make purchases in Guatemala. The stop at the gift shop outside the park was the place to get something authentically made there so don't miss your opportunity on the way there to get something. Karim, Noel, and our driver were exceptional!
An exceptionally well organized tour, all logistical details well thought out for a smooth experience. We were lucky to only have one other person in our group so it felt almost like a private tour. The guide was well informed and enthusiastic, and lunch at a Guatemalan restaurant was tasty and pleasant. Our only regret was that we couldn't do an overnight stay in Tikal!
Tikal itself is an amazing site to visit. we chose MayaWalk because of their reputation. The travel was easy and all of our drivers were excellent. Maya arranges for a Guatemalan driver and guide once you cross the border from Belize. Our guide was very friendly but we felt his knowledge of the site itself was fairly limited. Most of what was shared was posted on the signs at the site, and he repeated stories of the cultural symbols many times. When we arrived at each temple he gave us "time to explore on our own" while other guides stayed with their tour group and shared details about each location. we learned more info by listening to other guides than our guide. We also would have liked more time in the park. The restaurant lunch provided was very good. overall, we felt the value based on the price for this private tour was below expectations.
We had a blast visiting Tikal. It was so incredible to see the ancient Mayan temples and pyramids. Such a mind blowing experience. The day started early with a very seamless border crossing from Belize to Guatemala where our tour guide met us. From there we traveled to Tikal. Then we walked all around Tikal as our tour guide shared so much interesting information. Then we made our way back to the van where we drove to eat an amazing lunch in a village a little ways from Tikal. After lunch my group and I took a nice nap as we made our way back to the border. It was a great trip. I highly recommend!
Our tour guide - Regge - was great! He is so knowledgeable about the history and culture of Tikal. He was patient with all our questions (there were many), and when he saw that I was excited about certain topics, he went further in-depth on those. The location itself is wonderful. This is not to be missed!
Everything was seamless from trip departure, through the border, and returning at the end of the day. About an hour after crossing the border, you’ll pull over and give your lunch order for after the site visit. You are at the site visit for the perfect amount of time! The guide gave great information and could tell was well seasoned at this! Heading back, you’ll stop over for lunch (takes an hour). You’ll cross the border for your return and will continue to be smooth till your return. MayaWalks took care of everything, including the money for the crossing (included in your pay).
We had an amazing trip to Tikal with Maya Walk! We are often a bit skeptical of tour groups, preferring the autonomy and adventure of navigating things on our own, but the logistics of navigating the border with two young children nudged us in the direction of Maya Walk. Transportation was safe, comfortable and clean. Our guide Reggie was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Tikal and its ancient and recent history. We were super excited to see monkeys at the end of our tour! Lunch was delicious and we felt very well cared for. We enjoyed our experience with Maya walk so much (and found the pricing and experience to be 100% transparent, all border fees etc included) that we decided to uncharacteristically book another tour the next day with our family!
This was an unbelievable trip, border crossing was smooth and Walter and Reggie took such great care of us. Reggie was knowledgeable and caring (my daughter has a bad knee and Reggie help her along the way) and has great passion of the area and history. Besides the ruins, Reggie pointed out a family of spider monkeys, Toucan (we hear it, but was not able to see it in the trees) and ant eater.
It was cool crossing the border to Guatemala. I got to get another passport stamp. Our guide was very knowledgeable and I really enjoyed climbing the ruins.
Our day started very early in San Ignacio. We were picked up at our hotel. We had a very small group, just me, my wife and 1 other person fromt he UK. We taken to the boarder crossing into Guatemala. No issues. This tour covers the $20 fee per person to leave Belize. We met our Guatemala driver and tour guide at the boarded and switched to their van. After the crossing we encountered several issues, but not the tours fault. First there was road construction and we had to wait about 25 minutes so we could pass. Then, we learned their was a local village that was on strike and were blocking the road to Tikal. Thi swas the only way in. We learned that the people of this town wanted to get jobs at Tikal. We had to wait about an hour and a helf in the town for a government official to come and sign a proclimation that promised them jobs in the park. These was much to do while we waited but walk around this street and try to see what was going on and check out small local market that had snacks ect. The guide said they should open up after an hour or so and he was correct. If they didn't open, they would have taken us to another smaller Mayan site. I am glad the road was finally cleared. The rest of the day was good. We arrived at Tikal and the guide showed us around and told us about the different structures, took us through the forest and pointed out monkeys and birds we saw along the way. Then we got some free time to climb some of the structures and look around. We finished up and went to lunch at a nearby restaurant. lunch was included with the tour. The only issue we had that day is that since the park was closed in the morning, none of people that tyically sold water int he park were there and the tour did not provide any water. Also, even if they were selling water, we may not have been able to purcase as we did not have Guatemala money. not sure if they took US dollars or Belize currancy. Would have been nice if the tour compnay was able to provide water. Even if they charge liek $5 more for the tour. So bring plenty of water with you.
We met at the Maya Walk building in San Ignacio at 6:45am then took a very nice shuttle to the border and were walked across to our guide Christian and driver Walter. They were fantastic! Because it was a very small group (just my friend and myself as it was a weekday in what they call the slow season) they asked if we had breakfast yet. We hadn’t so they said they would stop at the best along the way. They called ahead and had a table all set for us. The traditional Guatemalan breakfast was delicious (not covered by the tour but 100% worth it if they say they have time)! We got to Tikal and Christian did an awesome job answering countless questions and explaining the history! He also gave multiple times for us to explore the different areas on our own as well and did not rush us. We left and had lunch at a beautiful spot on the way back which was very tasty! We made it back to San Ignacio around 4:15pm without a glitch. Would totally recommend this company and these guides!
Prior to arriving in San Ignacio I booked a day trip to Tikal with Maya Walks. Sent an inquiry via email on a Sunday and they were very fast to respond with some options. After further quick correspondence the trip was reserved and paid for. Inquiry to booking within an hour. I stopped in their office in San Ignacio on Burns Street upon arrival and the staff were just as friendly and helpful in person as they are via email. The Tikal tour was perfect and went off without a hitch. A total of eight on the tour. A van collected everyone at their lodging, took us to the border, and walked us through the crossing and exchanging some money. Reggie picked us up on the other side and was to be our tour guide for the day. Along with the driver, Walter. The Tikal park is large and does involve a lot of walking, but we were never rushed and given ample opportunity to explore on our own before moving on to another section. Never rushed. The tour then stops for lunch (included) on its way back to the border. In total it's a near ten hour day, but well worth it.
All the reviews are right - this trip is very well organized and our guide, Reggie, was fabulous. The tour of the site was excellent and he spotted two species of toucans, howler and spider monkeys and several other birds that really rounded out the trip for us. It was also crazy hot and humid and he did a really great job making sure we were hydrated and feeling ok. Highly recommend!
