The ATM cave is an amazing experience. Our guide, Hugh, was very knowledgeable about the Maya history of the cave and made sure that everyone in our group could safely navigate through the cave. Cameras and phones are not allowed in the cave, which is a good thing because I probably would have destroyed mine, but Mayawalk and Hugh provided photos of the things that we saw in the cave. The photos do not do it justice so I highly recommend the tour to see for yourself.

Itinerary
Taking a journey into the Maya underworld at Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) or the “Cave of the Stone Sepulchre” for one of the most enlightening, epic and unique experiences of your life. Leave the world of the living behind as you venture into the heart of the ATM Cave with your licensed guide. Recently deemed the #1 Sacred Cave destination in the world by National Geographic, the ATM cave is not only beautiful geologically with its crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, but also historically, as is a natural museum of ancient Maya artifacts, as well as a sacred burial place. This is the final resting place of “Crystal Maiden,” an ancient Maya ceremonial victim, as well as the remains of 13 other sacrificed men, women and children. Your professional guides have led government officials, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, The British High Commission and US Embassy officials into the ATM Cave. This sacrificial site is accessed by a 45 minute drive from our office in San Ignacio.
Here we enter the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and park our vehicles at the ranger post. From this point on we are on foot, hiking through the jungle for approximately 45 minutes to the entrance of the cave. To access the cave we swim across a small spring- fed pool and wade into the dark underworld of the cave that allows us access the extensive underground maze of tunnels, passageways and chambers, climaxing in the ceremonial chamber housing stoneware, ceramics, the famed crystallized skeleton of the “Crystal Maiden”. We spend approximately 3 hours in the cave at the guidance of our experienced guides. We enter back into the jungle world and hike to our vehicles where we relax and enjoy a homemade picnic lunch with water and soft drinks before driving back to San Ignacio. Difficulty level: Moderate (involved some easy swimming and life jackets are provided for non-swimmers, who will also be escorted by our highly trained guide).

The ATM tour was an amazing experience. Our guide Hugh was very knowledgeable about the history and made sure everyone was able to navigate safely inside the cave. I highly recommend this tour.
Great, funny, knowledgeable tour guides, drivers and helpers and great food at the end. Worth spending a little more as opposed to other agencies
My ATM guide Andy was great with Mayan history and helpful with where to step once inside the cave and scaling huge rocks. Physically, this was one of the most challenging tours I’ve done. If you want to push yourself and want adventure, this tour is for you. But definitely not for the weak. No photography is allowed just FYI.
Mayan Walk Tours was our first contact in Belize, and the whole experience was amazing. The communication before our arrival, the excursions, the guides, and everything else were wonderful. Everyone we met here was so kind and friendly. Special thanks to Alex, Isael, Isidoro, and Jonathan. They are amazing, and all their explanations made the experience even more enjoyable. Hopefully, many more people will come to Belize. You deserve it!
Pick up was on time, the vans are well maintained and the guides seemed knowledgeable. Unfortunately when we got to the cave we were told it just got closed due to the water level rising and it wasn't safe so we had to turn back. They tried to accommodate people who were interested in another cave but in the end it was too late for that and we couldn't go there either so we had to return to their office. At the office they offered other tours still doable that day, rescheduling the cave to another day or a full refund. Having been to the other options and being short on time to reschedule I went with the full refund that they processed right away. All in all good experience with the company and would book with them again.
The ATM tour was fantastic. Guide (Magdaleno) was excellent, very knowledgeable, and allowed the athleticism of the group to dictate the pace and direction of the tour. Good transportation, great lunch provided. Highly recommend the offseason tours as I have heard the peak season ATM cave tours can get backed up on each other. Great experience overall!
My son and I did the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave tour with MayaWalk Tours and loved every minute of it. Andy was our tour guide, and he was professional, knowledgeable, and had a great sense of humor. He shared the Mayan history with us in detail, explicitly explained the route inside the cave to keep all of us save. We experienced complete darkness walking inside the cave and we trusted him completely as our leader. I was so glad that I booked this tour. It was not as difficult as described by some reviews. This was the best cave tour we ever had. Thank you Andy and MayaWalk Tours. We definitely would do it again next time we visit Belize.
We booked the ATM tour through Viator for MayaWalk tours. It was a phenomenal trip! We met at the MayaWalk office in San Ignacio. We rode the bus out to the site and Magdaleno gave us some info and history. Once there you are out with one specific guide. Our guide was Hugh. He was amazing! He was very knowledgeable and made the trip for us seamless!! I would definitely recommend this trip. The cave was such a great adventure, while also being able to learn about Mayan culture!!
The best tour I ever taken in my life!!!❤️❤️❤️
Alex was an amazing tour guide! We learned so much and had a great time. He made everyone feel safe and comfortable on the trickier parts of the cave. Highly recommend!
This was a fantastic trip! Our guide was super knowledgeable and made the whole experience a great time.
6/5⭐️. Tour was perfect! I was little worried about narrow sections and deeper waters but our guide Emil (hope I remembered it right) advised and encouraged us all on through even the trickiest parts, and it turned out to be quite easy and really fun! It was interesting to hear stories about Mayan history. The lunch was delicious, and the driver took us comfortably back to the starting point. The entire day exceeded all my expectations.
Fantastic experience!!! Loved every second of it-tour guide was amazing! Lunch was delicious and getting to and from a/c all the way! Definitely choose Maya Walk for your tour!!
This was a great adventurous way to get into the history/culture of ancient maya civilization. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and answered every question we had. He was sure to guide us exactly how/where/when to move. He lightened the mood with fun facts and humor. Lunch was great. Highly recommend this tour and the tour guide Andy!!!
An amazing experience - Activity much more fun and more beautiful than expected. Swimming deep into a cave with some climbing and scrambling, our guide, Andy was not only instructive, but kept the tour upbeat and fun. The entire staff were exceptional, and the lunch provided was delicious. Perfect after a long day. One of the best experiences I have taken!
We had such a good experience. Our guide Christopher was amazing. He helped me so much. I just got knee surgery five months ago and he was so kind and considerate. He was really knowledgeable. Overall, I really enjoyed our adventurous this tour was. I highly recommend. Also the lunch after was so delicious!!
Incredible tour- Francis was so knowledgeable and was helpful in getting around the cave. Would recommend this as a must do tour when visiting Belize
Ive never done a tour like this before and being solo Andy our guide was informative, professional and reassuring Our journing through yhe cave was at a good paceXl with good knowledge A lovely lunch after and big up to Irvine our driver too Loved the day thank you
Stop questioning it and book this tour with MayaWalk now. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience. The cave has been temporarily closed to visitors before, and who knows how long we will continue to have the incredible privilege of experiencing a place like this up close. Fingers crossed it remains open for a very long time, as long as people continue to respect and protect it. This experience was absolutely unbelievable. Not only are you going on a wild adventure through an incredible cave system with guides who genuinely respect and honor this sacred place, but you will stand just feet away from human remains and artifacts that are more than a thousand years old, many still resting where they were left by the ancient Maya. It is honestly hard to describe how special that feels. Our guide, Cristian, was spectacular. He was extremely charismatic, kept us laughing, made us feel safe throughout the entire adventure, and had fascinating information for us every step of the way. Richard was another MayaWalk guide who spoke with us during the hour long ride from San Ignacio, and he was also incredible. He is an enthusiastic conservationist and wildly knowledgeable about Maya history, as well as the trees, birds, insects, and wildlife surrounding the cave. He is just an amazing person to be around and learn from. The lunch afterward was amazing too. Seriously, do not second guess it. If you are going to visit ATM Cave, these are your guys. This was easily one of the most unforgettable experiences of our entire trip.
My husband and I did the ATM Cave tour on August 2026, and it was honestly one of the best experiences of my life and completely unforgettable. Mayawalk is incredible, and our crew made the whole day absolute perfection. Mr. Hugh started us off on the right foot by giving us all the important instructions on the bus so we knew exactly what we were getting into and how to keep the cave protected. Mr. Ball got us there and back safely and smoothly as our driver, which is no small feat. Once we got to the cave, Francis was our guide, and he was just phenomenal. Francis handled the site with an immense amount of respect, reverence, and fascinating historical context, helping us understand the profound spiritual weight of what we were looking at. His expertise, combined with how safely and comfortably he navigated us through the tight spaces and rushing waters, made the historical journey just as impactful as the physical adventure itself. And then after all that swimming and hiking, Brittany fed us a tasty lunch back at camp. If you're doing this tour, you need to book with Mayawalk and hope you get this exact team because they are the absolute best!
We canceled the tour in the last minute because no photos or videos were allowed but only in the parking area. This is very disappointing because you visit a nice place and you can not take any memories with you. On this provider’s website stands “no electronic devices” but in my opinion is not specific enough.. We cancelled the tour and booked other activity instead. The provider was very friendly and refund the tour. The best solution would be that the tour guide takes few pictures for the group as other guides do in other places around the world but the government in Belize even doesn’t allow that. It’s a pity.
We had an amazing experience on the ATM Cave tour! Our guide, Hugh, was incredibly enthusiastic and made the whole day so much more enjoyable. He was extremely knowledgeable and shared fascinating information about the cave, the Maya history, and the archaeological discoveries throughout the tour. His passion was contagious, and he made everyone feel safe and engaged from start to finish. We would highly recommend this tour, especially if you get Hugh as your guide. Thank you for an unforgettable adventure!
One of our favourite adventures ever!! We were nervous going in, and enjoyed it all so much. Our guide Christian was funny, knowledgeable and kind. He paced the tour perfectly and was a great coach for the tighter spots. Highly recommend booking this tour.
AMAZING time. Mayawalk tours was so great; Francis was a fantastic guide through the caves. So much fun spelunking and trying out different routes.
This excursion is a must do if you are in or around San Ignacio. It is an amazing, unique experience. After arriving at the offices, you are driven to a spot near the cave. Your group then hikes 45 minutes to the entrance to the cave, explore the cave for about 2.5 hours, hike back and enjoy a picnic lunch. The spelunking in the cave is challenging, but worth it. There are times when you are in water, squeezing through tight spaces or sliding. As another reviewer mentioned, you will take off your shoes for a bit of time - wear thick socks for this part - this is to preserve the ground in the archeological site as much as possible. The Mayan artifacts and remains that you see are amazing to witness. Not having your cell phone with you allows for you to truly be present in the experience and soak in all of the history. Don’t hesitate - book this now!
This was the most amazing experience! We learnt SO much and have to give a special shout out to Hugh, our guide. He was so knowledgable and engaging, we didn’t want it to end! It was so fun and had such a great mix of adventure, challenge and education. The lunch was also delicious at the end and the transport went by so quick because the guides were teaching us so much on the way. It was easy to find the meeting point and everything was made so simple! Thank you!
Definitely a must do when anywhere near to it. Great combination of history and adventure, having no cameras makes it all much better. Allows you to be present for what is being done and learned and keep a respect for the culture of the trip.
Great time. Great guide and high level of service. Must do!!
What an amazing experience. It was exhilarating and strenuous. Our tour guide took his time with me and made sure I was able to climb over boulders and squeeze through impossibly tight spaces. He was very knowledgeable and passionate about Mayan history and left us with a greater understanding of the culture and the difficulties they faced. 10/10 tour.
I took my 17 year old daughter Keely on this amazing ATM cave tour. It was absolutely amazing. Our guide Alex was awesome. He was excellent. Great knowledge of the ancient Mayan history as well as geological. It was an incredible day. We were so happy we chose MayanWalk. Very professional.☆
We had an amazing time on this tour. Was not too strenuous for our teenage daughters and good for most physical activity levels, although there were some tight squeezes in the cave. Our guide, Francis, was so knowledgeable and we learned a lot. He was amazing! Both daughters said this tour was the highlight of our entire trip to Belize. Highly recommend!
Can't say enough positive things about this tour experience! Francis was so knowledgeable about the archaeology and nature of the jungle. He made sure everyone was taken care of throughout the cave experience. The ATM tour was so memorable and so much fun while also being informative.
Did the ATM tour and it was great. Pickup / drop off efficient and ok The tour and guide (Pedro) was ok. Very professional. The tour wasn’t too difficult Impressive sights! After the tour nice food. Minor comments: - although a max of 240 pers/day some queuing in the cave. - to a certain extent it is strange that the artifacts are not protected, besides a yellow plastic line on the floor. This will give issues in future - the office is great, but is offering the tour at different prices. Tour price is negotiable… that’s less professional and you feel a bit bad when you find people pay 10-15 dollars less. Ask lowest price guarantee or so
Magdeleno was a great guide. This is an absolute must-do! It exceeded every expectation I had and was one of the most incredible experiences of my trip. It was definitely more physically challenging than I anticipated, but every step was 100% worth it. The adventure is unlike anything else, and the payoff is unforgettable. One tip: bring a pair of thick socks, as you'll be walking without shoes for a significant portion of the tour. Trust me—you'll be glad you did!
Mayawqlks tour does such an amazing job with the tours. They picked us up at the hotel, drive was nice and comfortable and the guide and staff are AMAZING! very knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. Highly recommended the tour and company. It was such a wonderful experience.
Amazing experience and Cristian was an informative guide. A definitely unique activity to do.
Great experience! Our guides Andy and Junior we’re great! They told us a lot of the history and preservation of the cave with gratitude, passion and humor! We didn’t find it to difficult and enjoyed the climbing, swimming and gliding! Well organized en the lunch afterwards was also excellent! Thank you for a memorable experience, we’ll never forget it! Jos, Remco, Francien, Menno, Eef, Kirsten en Jonas
Hugh was the best storyteller. He had us captivated and made sure we were safe. This tour was the highlight of our trip. We had a blast, and it was such a unique experience. We had 3 teenage girls aged 18, 16, and 14 and it was also the highlight of their trip as well.
What an adventure this was! Without a doubt, book this excursion! My husband and I had the best time and our guide, Christian, was so knowledgeable and fun. We only had 1 full day in San Ignacio and we’re so glad we spent it exploring such a unique and sacred place. Would highly recommend!
I loved everything about this tour. It was the perfect blend of adventure, sightseeing, and history all in one. Our guide, Emil, was amazing. I was watching all of the other tour groups speed past us, but he continued to stop and take his time with us explaining and teaching us all about the Mayan history as well as the geology of the cave. I would highly recommend to anyone who is physically able to do this tour.
I want to thank the whole crew, Richard, Cris, tate and the chef for the amazing experience. Very professional and educational the whole time. The food was the best I've had in the island thus far! One of the most genuine tours I've done so far. Honestly way better than expected! Came home exhausted but it was very fun and active. Thank you MayaWalk for preserving our history!!
Full day trip to the ATM cave including a picnic lunch was a highlight of our recent trip to Belize. Our lodge arranged this trip for us. MayaWalks picked us up at our jungle lodge and transferred us to San Ignacio where we met our guide, Francis. We then drove about 90 minutes to the parking area of the cave tour. Francis is an excellent guide with a lot of knowledge that ranges from birds to plants to Mayan history and geology. He did such a great job explaining how deforestation and over-population led to the Mayan civilization's downfall. He also explained the relevance of the ATM cave to the Mayans and their hopes on contacting the rain god with their sacrifices. The cave itself is geologically incredible and then you add the Mayan aftifacts and remains and it's just mind-blowing. What we saw was beyond anything I could have imagined. Our 19yr old son was thrilled with this adventure. On our way back out, Francis had us turn out our lights and the absolute blackness of the cave was just overwhelming. So glad we had flashlights! Lunch was delicious-chicken and rice and served by a wonderful woman. There is a large restroom facility and a place to change into dry clothes for the ride back to San Ignacio.
Amazing, full of adventure and history. Definitely a must but should be capable of bouldering. Guide was amazing and knowledgeable.
Very fun and unique experience. We had a group of 8 ( 4 adults 4 16-18 teenagers) and we had 2 guides with us. Andres and Christian were experienced , very helpful and pleasant!! We joined their van at teakettle town ( I would not recommend driving directly to the ATM cave as road is unpaved and rocky). Food was simple and good. I emailed and booked directly with them, was much cheaper. It not very physically challenging is you are in a decent shape and ok with enclosed spaces ( only few areas were tight and they have easy routs too)!!
The Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave tour was absolutely unforgettable, and a massive part of that was thanks to our guide, Hugh. Going into a cave can feel a bit adventurous, but Hugh made us feel incredibly safe, confident, and comfortable every step of the way. His depth of knowledge is truly impressive. He shared so much fascinating insight into Belizean culture and ancient Mayan history, bringing the entire experience to life. To top it all off, we were treated to a delicious lunch of traditional rice and beans that was absolutely fantastic! If you are doing the ATM cave, you absolutely want Hugh as your guide. 10/10 recommend!
Maya Walk Stuff was excellent in comunication and they were puntual and ready to take us to the tour without losing time, very informative guide and the Person on reservation was always there online to aswear any question i highly recommend this company
This tour is amazing! I would highly recommend it. Alex was our guide and he gave us such a great experience. The cave and the artifacts are incredible—I still can’t believe that we got to be in such close proximity to it all. Take the tour!
I will admit that I was a bit hesitant to book with Maya, since they seemed to dominate the online presence for tours, and I feared it would be a large, generic trip. I'm glad I did because all of my preconceived notions about the trip were inaccurate - yes, you need a helmet and closed-toe shoes, and the tour size is capped by the park service. The tour itself was unbelievable and should not be missed. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The guide was exceptional and impressed us throughout the tour with his historical, biological, and cultural knowledge.
Richard of MayaWalk was our guide on this adventure in June 2026. After a 30-45 minute walk through the forest with no bugs, we entered the cave by swimming through a pool of turqoise clear water. We proceeded to be in the cave around three hours crawling over, under, and through boulders, and wading and swimming through pools. Eventually we reached the upper chamber where we removed our shoes and walked in socks to preserve the integrity of the cave while viewing Mayan artifacts and remains. My teens have historically not liked tours, preferring to explore at their own pace. Richard caught their attention with engaging storytelling about the cave’s geology, Mayan history, and wildlife. We were lucky to have one guide for our family of four. Our teens rated this experience as better than visiting the above ground Mayan ruins and snorkeling the barrier reef. MayaWalk had absolutely too notch engaging, outgoing, and knowledgeable guides who thought of everything from a briefing on the ride to the caves covering phobias, to the best Belizean chicken meal we had on the trip. This is the tour to pick!
