Stopped here for a break while doing a long hike in presidio. Cool art museum with some nice pieces. The architecture of the building itself was beautiful. Spent a little less than hour for 25 is okay but should be a tad cheaper. Also they have a cafe in the basement which is a total ripoff.

Itinerary
With your admission ticket in hand, head to the California Palace of the Legion of Honor (known informally as the Legion of Honor), located in Lincoln Park overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, where the Pacific spills into San Francisco Bay. A gift of Alma de Bretteville Spreckels to the city of San Francisco in the early 1900s, this stunning building is a replica of the Palais de la Légion d’Honneur along the Seine in Paris, and its epic location makes this hidden gem one of the city’s greatest treasures. Explore the museum’s extensive collection of more than 124,000 works of art, including European paintings, sculptures and decorative arts; ancient art from the Mediterranean basin; and the largest collection of works on paper in the American West. The permanent collection reflects a history of patronage by its founders, whose focus was 18th- and 19th-century French art. Don’t miss one of the 28 original casts of Rodin's The Thinker statue and the must-see Salon Doré of the Hôtel de la Trémoille exhibit, reopening in the fall of 2013. This is one of the finest examples of French neoclassical interior architecture in the world. Be sure to bring your camera, because after your time at the museum, you can walk a bit down the road for incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands in the distance. Upgrade: Audio Tour or Special Exhibits Upgrade to include the audio tour at the Legion of Honor for a more in-depth experience, or enjoy entrance to its fascinating Special Exhibits.
This ticket also allows you free same-day General Admission to the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park

Beautiful building, clean, beautiful works. Seemed like there weren’t as many exhibits as I expected.
Don't Just Be a Thinker about Going - Go! Rodin's famous statue of "The Thinker" greets you in the center of the outdoor courtyard as you approach the museum entrance. What a grand spectacle. Plus, there are some really soaring views of the golf course and Golden Gate Bridge to the west. The entrance leading up to the museum with the arms of white columns, plus an IM Pei-looking glass pyramid behind "The Thinker" - a small echo to the glass pyramid at the Louvre, all offer you a whole lot of beauty to behold before even entering the museum. Inside, we walked through the permanent collections, which would be worth several visits in and of themselves, and then we headed downstairs for the temporary Wayne Thiebaud exhibit for a free, docent-led tour. The docent provided us with excellent context for the paintings, so we did not feel the need to thread back through the gallery using the QR codes for more information. It is good to know that the information is available, of course. Asks at the front desk when the free tours are on the day you visit. They are first come, first served. As with any fine museum such as this one, the marble floors are tough on the legs, and there's a lot of standing and walking involved in a museum visit. Each gallery has a bench or benches in the center, but you can't read any of the signage from the center of a room. So, this writer advises that you wear your most cushioned socks and shoes, so that you can focus on absorbing all of the beauty, as well as walk around the exterior of the museum, either before or after your visit. Top tip: the curved marble interior staircases are beautiful, but we knew where to find the hidden elevator - it's by the men's room. I'm being cute - it's not really hidden, just not obvious. I am so glad we went here.
Fascinating. I saw the Monet and Morissot exhibit as well as some of the other exhibits. The staff was great. The views were magnificent.
The legion of honor hosts a rotation of temporary exhibits. The early 2026 exhibit was the floral arrangement showcase. Now, if you’ve never been - parking is extremely challenging. The location is really amazing and just walking around the promises will give you incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge. But parking…get early tickets, get a Lyft, or be willing to walk uphill quite far.
The Legion has a spectacular speciall exhibit of Manet and Morisot paintings. Should have been called Morisot and Manet, since her paintings, with which I was mostly unfamiliar, were considerably more interesting overall than his. We spent three hours altogether before having lunch in their very good but VERY expensive restaurant; and then we finished up with another 39 minutes with the special exhibit and an hour going through their surprisingly extensive permanent t collection of Rodin sculptures.
Check in was very easy. Parking can be a bit challenging, but the views surrounding the museum is fantastic. The staff were very friendly and polite. There are plenty of pieces to see at the museum. I would definitely recommend going!
The museum is full of amazing works of art from across the globe. The setting in this marvellous building of remembrance is superb
We arrived at the Legion of honor and the Viator app wouldn’t bring up our reservation. We received a screen saying oops sorry we have an error. Couldn’t confirm tickets and had to purchase again. Not happy and won’t use this app sgain
My family member was happy visiting museums in north america and europe ..happy times ..hope to continue the good times with my dad
I enjoyed the art, but was disappointed I didn't get to see the Monet painting, which had been moved.
Absolutely beautiful museum. Everyone was kind and helpful. The restrooms were clean. The bookstore/gift shop had a variety, and the menu at the café looked delicious.
Is there such a thing as a boutique museum? This is a small, but beautifully curated and wonderfully organized property. All periods of art are represented and are easily accessible. They may not have show-stoppers of the favorites, but my favorites were represented beautifully. We started around the Renaissance timeframe and progressed up through Impressionism, which is my favorite period. Along the way we saw El Greco, Rembrandt, Renoir, Manet, and Monet. That’s the truly impressive thing about this museum, is that the artists are all here! And thus, the spirit of art lives here too. At the end of our visit, we were treated to a wonderful concert performed by a talented musician on the museum’s century-old pipe organ. The music was wonderful and the open-space of the museum’s made the acoustics perfect for the organ’s deep tones and running melodies.
it may have been my fault, but i needed to cancel when i realized your ticket did not get me into the special exhibit i wanted at the museum. And i couldn't ! I think you should offer a 24hour cancellation or put it in up front text that your ticket doesn't offer special exhibits before customer hits "pay"
There is just a lot of beautiful art there and laid out with lots of space. It’s free to local residence once a month but they didn’t ask me for ID. They had two paintings by El Greco who I love. I found the spot from the movie Vertigo which I really wanted to do. And all sorts of other works, delighted me, but the real highlight was the docent led tour which I believe happens every day.
The California Palace of the Legion of Honor is a fine art museum which features European Paintings and fine sculpture by Auguste Rodin. My review emphasizes its fine ,but not encyclopedic collection of Italian Paintings. From the Italian Medieval Period,14th Century,I appreciated fine paintings using tempera and gold leaf on wood panel by Luca di Tomme("Crucifixion",Sienese),Ugolino di Nerio("Saint Louis of Toulouse",Sienese),Bernardo Daddi("Crowned Martyred Saint,Florentine),Lorenzo di Niccolo("Saint Paul"),and Bicci Di Lorenzo("Saint Stephan and Saint Anthony"). From the Renaissance Period,I saw fine paintings worthy of approbation by Giovanni Dal Ponte,Bartolomeo Vivarini, and Fra Angelico. These painters produced their paintings in the Early Renaissance Period I also relished splendid later Italian Renaissance Period Paintings by Cesare Da Sesto,Rafaelino Del Garbo,Jacopo Dei Sellaio, and Giovanni da Cima Conegliano,All of these later Renaissance works had landscapes in the background The Legion of Honor has fine Baroque Period Italian Paintings which employed Tenebrism to perfection by Guercino("Samson and The Honeycomb"),Luca Giordano,Jiusseppe Ribera, and Massimo Stanzione. When you visit the Legion of Honor,I hope you enjoy their 14th,15th,16th,and 17th Century Italian Paintings as much as I did.The Legion of Honor has a marvelous collection of sculpture by Auguste Rodin, but that is a subject of a future review.
We went on a Saturday afternoon. 4:00pm every Saturday they have a free Organ concert in the Museum. It is a beautiful museum, and the organ is spectacular. If you want a free activity on Saturday afternoon, and you like organ music, you will not be disappointed!
An incredible experience, featuring paintings, ceramics, sculptures and more! It's amazing how close someone can enjoy the artwork. We also decided to enjoy the cafe, a must while visiting.
I actually liked this museum much better than the DeYoung museum, but I prefer the detail of older pictures rather than contemporary pictures. Also there is so much more to see. And don't forget military discounts not only here but a lot of other places in San Francisco.
We had a great time. Went to The Palace Legion of Honor to view Art, grabbed a coffee at Compton’s coffee and had lunch at Absinthes. The city was its charming self looking forward to returning!
We decided to take in the special exhibit of Mary Cassatt paintings at the Legion of Honor Museum. She was a terrific -- and most unusual American impressionist artist living in Paris who worked & palled around with Degas, Monet and others. For the most part, her subjects were upper middle class women and/or mothers with their children, and her methods were sometimes subtle and sly. The museum itself is spacious; the permanent exhibits a selection of European art from centuries past.
Just about everything. Each piece is well described with appropriate history of the subject and artist. Impressive.
Wonderful place to visit with a wide range of art and exhibits particularly the Rodin collection. Plenty of parking and away from the bustle of the city which has lost it's appeal for me with the extortionate prices and drug addicts and drunks on the pavements near the seafront.
I loved the Mary Cassatt exhibit, location, the art itself and the descriptions of Mary's life which gave me some insight into her struggles in the societal thinking of the time
This is my second trip to San Francisco. During my first trip in 2016, weeks drove past the modern art museum but didn’t have time to see it. I wanted to go there this time. Unfortunately it is closed on Wednesday. So we chose this museum. My hosts have not seen this museum. The museum is located on high ground with views of the Golden Gate and the city. It has ample parking and the exterior looks like a palace. There were many rooms of exhibits ranging from sculptures, paintings, ceramics, architecture and artefacts. Two or three rooms were under renovation. We liked the museum very much. We spent more than three hours with the exhibits and about an hour in the cafeteria. The food was very tasty. The tickets for this museum come with free tickets to the de young museum near the botanical garden. It was a memorable day.
The food and service in the cafe was excellent! Was surprised by this. Usually “museum” food is not good. This was the exception.
The architecture and paintings were all so beautiful. You feel transformed into a European museum not in the middle of a large congested city.
Experience was amazing and art was great as well as the view of the bridge and can also go golfing with friends!
We enjoyed visiting this museum. It’s a perfect size without being overwhelming. The Rodin collection is amazing and there are some beautiful paintings to see. The pottery/porcelain is beautiful but there’s a lot. A great half day activity in a lovely location with a nice little cafe.
The legion of honor museum would not accept the tickets that I bought through your website, and it was quite embarrassing, insinuating it was fake and they don’t work with TripAdvisor. Not a pleasant experience at all.
Beautiful museum. Great architecture! We didn’t get to see everything but we Will definitely visit again!
I am a native San Franciscan and have visited The Legion of Honour since I was in a stroller! At 74 years young, I’m still in awe of this wonderful magical place, where time stands still for me with overflowing memories.
It was not disclosed that I'd have to purchase another full price ticket at the door to include the special event. Ended up paying $50 for $30 event. No way to return ticket to your platform day of event.
This is a wonderful place to visit with brilliant collections of art including a large selection of the works of Rodin. I was amazed at the ranges on display and thoroughly recommend a visit.
To crowded to comfortably view! Plus, I was charged twice $30.00 for general admission and the Sergeant in Spain. I only wanted to see Sergeant in Spain. Probably not.
We went for the John Singer Sargent exhibit and enjoyed that very much. But, I still LOVE the resident exhibits at the Legion. Always comforting to see Bouguereau’s The Broken Pitcher and Makovsky’s, Russian Bride…
The museum was very good, as usual. Always enjoy their Rodin collection especially. But was very disappointed to go back to the car and find a window punched out. Ours was one of several. We’ve lived in the Bay Area for a long time, so that kind of activity isn’t new, but in this case the only parking for the museum is their surface lot - thieves obviously know that people will leave their car unattended for several hours. Even though there was nothing in the vehicle (and therefore nothing taken) we still have to deal the the damage costs to the rental car our family had. The museums staff was kind of cavalier about our experience, so I assume they are unlikely to add any security to their lot. BOTTOM LINE - IF YOU WANT TO VISIT THE LEGION OF HONOR MUSEUM DO NOT PARK THERE - take a ride share, taxi or the bus.
Beautiful location - wonderful sculptures - and an awesome presentation within the gallery space. GREAT bargain - you can tour this museum and the DeYoung Museum in Golden Gate Park - on the same day for a single admission. My 10-year-old granddaughter enjoyed the sculptures as much as me - what a surprise!
Fabulous collection and great architecture. Well worth the value. Ideal size for a 2-3 hour visit which is perfect for a museum. Highly recommend this place.
DO NOT GO HERE. Our car has been broken into and others as well and there is nothing anyone can do. They obscure and say it's not the museum's fault and the parking lot is not their jurisdiction, it's the City and County of San Francisco. have been to the Legion of Honor several times and had no issues. STAY AWAY. The issue that I have ok, the parking is not their jurisdiction, put a sign in the lobby or verbally let you know that this is happening.
First visit for my wife and the collections did impress her. I noticed the changes since my last visit in the 1980s
it did not work out quite right.......I couldn't find a conformation the museum wanted and I had to purchase another ticket......I paid 88.00 for a membership.....???????
Fantastic museum, beautiful inside and out! Loved seeing all the different pieces from history! Absolutely coming back!
wonderful eclectic collection I had shown sufficient appreciation and there is surely no obligation in a voluntary feedback to write a specified amount
Being there with family who truly enjoyed the museum as the permanent instillations were beautifully juxtaposed with the temporary exhibit.
I was charged an extra $30 I was not expecting because I used Viator instead of going to the Legion of Honor website. I will avoid using Viator in the future.
Guo Pei exhibit..a must for fashion lovers! The museum gorgeously located on top a city golf course. Muni bus takes you directly to park., lovely walk!
After visiting the Japanese Tea Garden, we drove the short distance to the Legion of Honor Museum. Since my cousin and sister live in the Bay Area (showed their Driver’s Licenses), we entered the Museum for free. Fantasy Couture by Guo Pei were featured throughout the rooms. There is a Gift Shop that featured only books, clothing and accessories that are Guo Pei-themed.
This is a good size museum filled with paintings, sculptures, fabric, ceramics, etc. Rodin was prominently featured in the collection, with a statue of the Thinker dominating the entry courtyard. The General Admission Ticket is free on the first Tuesday of each month. Not being an art connoiseur, this is what entices me to visit. But even on a free day, you can still find free parking close by.
We visited this past Sunday. I read the previous reviews that mentioned car break-ins in the parking lot. I was very happy to see SFPD presence in the parking lot.
