Itinerary
Please note: this walk is not at all strenuous. Obviously there's some stairs but this is done at a leisurely pace and suitable for almost everyone. This breathtaking 2 mile walking tour of San Francisco's hidden stairways is the #1 rated Airbnb Experience in the Bay Area. See gorgeous mosaic tiled steps and hear the stories behind them, then take in stunning 360° views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park and downtown San Francisco. You'll also discover beautiful neighborhoods and gardens that tourists rarely see...you might even go home with a succulent! I'll provide commentary, context and some history along the way. Generally SF is dry May-October. There can be fog in the summertime, mostly in the morning. Temps rarely above 70F (21C) or below 50F (10C). Rain may cancel. It will be necessary to carry small children as strollers are not suitable. If you bring a guest that’s under 18, it’s your responsibility to make sure the activities they participate in are age-appropriate. This was a fun outing and a nice leisurely walk through parts of SF that’s off the common tourist path. The guide was amazing and the views were spectacular.
Greg is a wonderful, knowledgeable and friendly tour guide. A people person! The walk was enjoyably easy.
A fantastic tour led by Greg, very knowledgeable person talking about the mosaic staircase along with the history of the area round about us. Most enjoyable afternoon and would definitely recommend this tour.
I really recommend this walking tour with Greg! Very informative and you'll hear some really interesting historical facts!
I'm a local and loved it like a tourist. Greg is smart, silly, friendly...and a plant guy who fed us nasturtiums along the route. Got some sun too! A perfect afternoon adventure with somebody who truly appreciates our locale. Thanks Greg!
The walk, although uphill and lots of stairs was at such a chill pace it was easy to do. The stairs and people's yard were gorgeous. Definitely worth it.
Fantastic views and great guide
It’s a fun scenic tour throughout San Francisco with a knowledgeable and friendly guide. You also learn a lot about plants and my son was delighted with the edible flowers and fruit.
Good insight on local neighborhoods
Do yourself a favor and book a tour with Greg! His tour was my favorite. He is very knowledgeable and passionate. He also took his time and answered all our questions! Thank you so much Greg! We will definitely see you the next time we are in the city!
Great experience, with amazing views and general beauty of SF. Our guide, Greg was fun, personable and knowledgeable about the sites and SF history. I highly recommend this tour and plan to bring family and friends on the tour in the future.
Greg is hands down the best tour guide I have ever encountered. He was so knowledgeable and so personable! He made the tour so fun and so engaging! I highly recommend booking the hidden stairways tour with him! I’d do it again in a heartbeat!
Greg was hands down the best tour guide I have ever encountered! He’s so personable and filled the tour with so much knowledge of the area! We felt engaged and very much inspired! Highly recommend you book this tour with him if you can!
This was one of the highlights of my San Francisco trip. Beautiful steps, flowers and beautiful views of San Francisco from the top. Greg was a great tour guide. I’ve since recommended this tour to others online.
We wanted to do a walk ‘off the beaten track’, this tour ticked all the boxes! Greg was so informative about the history and culture of San Francisco & truly loves his city. Totally enjoyed the tour, learning so much more about SF, including stunning sights.
We have been on many tours and Greg is one of the best tour guides ever! He is knowledgeable, so friendly and enthusiastic. The tour ended with small gifts for everyone and lots of advice on restaurants and things to see at n the city. This is a must do in Sam Francisco!
Had a wonderful time with Greg and a perfect start to my San Francisco trip. The tour is not only about beautiful stairs but also about the city’s history. You get to see amazing views, neighborhoods and flowers. I learned so many fun facts and had the best time. Thank you!
We had a wonderful time with Greg. He was so informative and made the walk very interesting. We are two ladies in our 70s but coped with the many stairs despite the heatwave! This is a ‘must do’ when visiting San Francisco.
Greg was so informative. We had a really enjoyable time. This is certainly a must do on your itinerary.
This is an awesome activity to do solo or with friends. My friend came in town and we booked this, Greg was very knowledgeable. Lots of great SF facts in addition to facts about the various stairways. Really loved that along the route residents were welcoming and also offered their own cool fact or 3 to this experience. Although you don’t HAVE to take one, TAKE THE GIFT AT THE END! I’m going to book this for my work team, such a great experience!
We had a wonderful afternoon with Greg. As luck had it, we had a private tour for this day which worked to our advantage as we requested a much faster walking pace. Greg is fun, knowledgeable, articulate, and made the experience a San Francisco highlight! Without a doubt the stairs are magnificent, but Greg made walking through the neighborhoods an interesting history, geography, and botany lesson. Best way to discover hidden gems, learn and enjoy! Highly recommend!
Great tour with Greg for an area we wouldnt have found on our own. Stairways were super unique and Greg provided a lot of information and took pictures the whole way that he sent to the group so we didn't have to focus on photos. A plus experience
DO NOT MISS THIS ONE! Greg is not only knowledgeable about the stairs, but about the history of San Francisco as well. We learned so much about the history of the city. He is very charming, humorous and engaging. Greg paces the trip appropriately so that you are never very winded, despite the heights scaled. He goes above and beyond to make you immediately feel comfortable. In addition to all of this, he knows exactly where to take the best photos, and will do it for you on his phone - he then Air Drops them to you at the end of the tour. He also puts together a short video of your walk and sends to you! I cannot recommend this tour enough!
The Hidden Steps of San Francisco is one of the most memorable and rewarding ways to explore the city. These stairways reveal a side of San Francisco that even many locals don’t know—quiet neighborhoods, secret gardens, stunning architecture, and postcard-worthy views you’d never find from a car or bus. Our family had a wonderful tour with Greg, spanning three generations all enjoying the Hidden Stair tour together. Greg did an outstanding job keeping everyone engaged—even enticing Zoë (5½ years old!) with fun details and stories along the way. From start to finish, we were thoroughly entertained while learning fascinating facts about how San Francisco developed and how these iconic stairways evolved over time. Despite the many stairs, the tour never felt overwhelming. There are frequent stops to listen to interesting historical insights, take in the scenery, and capture incredible photos. Each set of steps feels like a small adventure, weaving through charming streets and tucked-away corners while offering breathtaking perspectives of the bay, skyline, and surrounding hills. The mosaics, lush landscaping, and historic homes add so much character and charm. What makes the Hidden Steps truly special is how they combine movement, history, and beauty. It’s both a great workout and a peaceful, almost meditative experience. We live in the Bay Area and were thrilled by how much we learned and how much we enjoyed seeing San Francisco with fresh eyes. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, this experience is an absolute must-do. Highly recommended for families, history lovers, walkers, and photographers alike.
Great walk and views. Have lived in Bay Area my whole life and never had been to the view and staircases we saw. Greg is the absolute best tour guide and brought awesome energy the whole time.
Greg was a very knowledgeable and well-spoken guide. Seemed he really liked SF and was proud to talk about it. He was prepared to show us some photos of early SF from his laptop which added to the experience. He even had small bottles of water! Would definitely use Greg again on another tour and recommend him
I am so glad we did this tour even if it was a little out of the way from where we were staying. I felt these tiled steps would not have been as fun without learning from Greg along the way. He knows a lot about the city and shared interesting info. We really enjoyed the nice small group we were with and thankfully the weather turned out good and didn’t rain until later after the tour was done! I also really appreciated all his restaurant recommendations, linked lists, other helpful tips, and organization with taking photos.
Nice walk, interesting facts, another view of San Francisco. Mesmerizing bay views. Greg was super friendly and kind
Greg gives SF background, history, and fun facts with a sense of humor. It’s obvious that he has cultivated personal relationships with residents along his tour route and brings a sense of pride and respect to the city in which he lives. His tour is predetermined, but his ability to tailor the presentation to a specific audience is apparent.
A wonderful combination of fresh air and amazing views -- plus the history and art of a cool SF neighborhood. Greg is a top notch and engaging guide!
Wonderful SF neighborhood walk combining SF history, art and amazing views. So much fresh air and so many great stories. Greg is so engaging and fun!
If you have been to San Francisco before and are looking for something "off the beaten path," this is a MUST tour. Greg was so enjoyable, funny, and knowledgeable. It is definitely a hidden stairways tour, but truly it's so much more than that. I don't want to go into too many details, because you deserve to be as happily surprised and pleased as we were. Some tour guides do it for the money. You can tell Greg loves what he does ~ 10 stars!!
Greg was an outstanding tour guide! I’m so happy we took this tour of hidden stairways. The steps are views are just gorgeous and Greg pauses at the perfect spots to get a sight of the views and catch your breath if steps are a bit off a challenge. They were not for us, but I was upon the first incline and we had no idea we had walked up it because he’s full of information and good tips about the city, you don’t even realize you’re hiking up an incline. What a wonderful tour guide, and we absolutely loved his stories and what we saw. Thanks again Greg! We appreciate the experience so much! Book the tour, you be happy you did!!
It was great tour and Greg was great both as tour guide and storyteller. I have lived in the bay area for over 40 years but never knew about those stairways let alone history of surrounding area, Sunset District. It was great learning experience. There were many people visiting those stairways and those people were listening in. I would highly recommend this tour, not only for those people visiting San Francisco but for locals as well.
Greg is awesome. A longtime local who's incredibly knowledgeable, as well as very kind and funny. The story of the hidden stairwys is amazing, and they are an inspiring and beautiful neighborhood achievement. I know San Francisco fairly well, but this was new territory for me, and well worth the time. I don't think there are better views of the city. Greg makes the tour great.
An amazing experience through the parts of San Francisco you wouldn’t have found on your own. Greg was so interesting, knowledgeable and very enthusiastic about his home city. Local information from someone who has lived there for 22 years. Tour lasted about 2 hours at a relaxed pace. Highly recommend Thank you Greg for a fantastic insight
Greg was so much fun. The staircases are really cool, the history Greg shared was just as good, and the views at the top were spectacular! I'm planting my succulent gift ASAP!
Amazing views of the city and a great way to learn about its history & culture. Greg is a very seasoned, personable, and engaging guide who is clearly passionate about sharing his love for SF with everyone he meets. Would absolutely recommend to anyone visiting! This tour is spectacular on a clear day, late Aug / early Sep was a great time to go but certainly not the only time.
Gregory was GREAT! Full of historical and current knowledge about the stairways and the city in general. The meeting place was easy and the tour was very easy to do. The Stairways are beautiful and have a fascinating story.
Greg was an absolute delight as a tour guide! He is very knowledgeable about the stairways and also San Francisco in general. He answered all our questions with a wonderful attitude. I would take another tour with him without hesitation.
The meeting point of St. Anne's Catholic Church was easy to find. We felt comfortable waiting there except for the fact that there were no public bathroom facilities nearby. Our tour guide arrived in a timely manner. He made sure everyone had arrived, checked in, and understood the parameters of the tour. The tour group was small, consisting of couples, individuals, and a family with a school-age child. We had an opportunity to introduce ourselves as the tour guide had. It was a typical San Francisco weather day. Fortunately, we had prepared by making sure we had water, snacks, and jackets. Comfortable walking shoes are essential! Our guide was personable, knowledgeable, interesting, kind, patient, and had a great sense of humor. He took group and individual photos as he offered or was requested. He shared samples of edible plants along the way. He also offered a plant to take home at the end of the tour to add to a garden. The tour was at a good pace. It was not too fast or too slow. It was a lot of walking and climbing as expected, but doable even for older people in the group who have good mobility. After the tour, the guide sent copies of the photos he took to all participants. It was great to receive them, and I have enjoyed sharing them with family and friends. I would highly recommend this tour to others!
My niece and I took Greg's tour and he was FANTASTIC!!!!!! I highly reccommend this tour, Greg gives little tidbits of history and rando facts about the area as you go. He is very knowledgeable and informative and engaging. The perfect tourguide!
Educational and informative. Greg is a knowledgable person and a great guide. The tour was excellent! The walk was not strenuous, we stopped several times during the walk, to hear interesting facts and stories, to take photos and catch a breath :)
This was different. It was very informative and fun. It included some history, current information, with fun facts, and a good amount of exercise. Greg was so sweet, energetic, and welcoming.
I had a wonderful outing with Greg! Luckily, I was the only participant which resulted in very pleasant conversations. The walk through the neighborhoods to the steps was an easy walk with Greg stopping intermittently along the way to point out various buildings, flowers and the unexpected tidbit about the area. He is a wealth of knowledge and his easy going nature at once puts you at ease. Finally, the views are spectacular (if you get a clear day). Don’t miss this adventure. Thanks for showing me the bus stop back to the train - and the donut shop!
Great experience. The mosaic steps are beautiful. The guide is very knowledgeable about the area and how the stairs came to be.
Greg makes the walk really fun by immersing you in a brief cultural and economic history of SF. He is a great guide who comes prepared - I particularly loved that he took photos of all notable spots so that we don’t have to bother with it during our walk which was great because I could enjoy the walk even more. He also shows you interesting pictures of the neighbourhood from the past. 2 hr walk doesn’t seem much at all when you’re chatting and learning. Greg alone made the experience super worth it!
Greg has the best personality! We loved all the history he shared along our route to see the beautiful stairways. I highly recommend this tour! We were lucky to enjoy it on a beautiful, sunny day in SF. The views were spectacular and will plan to take friends and family visiting the Bay Area on this tour. 5 stars!
Great job by enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and compassionate guide. Greg was incredibly knowledgeable and articulate. He made sure the walk was comfortable for all despite the stairs and hills.
