1st day in San Francisco and booked directly with bay city rentals. Family was so excited, arrived at rental shop greeted by a very member of staff behind the desk and she explained the rental, route and got out helmets. All good ubtil we were sent over to the mechanic to collect the bikes. We were rudely informed the bikes weren’t available and he just disappeared. No apology or explanation. Our day just turned upside down and no one seemed to care about the rude mechanic, as if this was just the norm. We did get to take the bikes out on a different day and had a wonderful time but the original experience of the poor customer service left an overall bad impression of this rental company. If you book directly I would call to check before you get your hopes up.

Your full-day bike rental includes a handlebar bag, bike lock, map, and a bike rack with a bungee cord for added convenience. When you're ready to return, simply ride back to the shop at your own pace. Prefer a different return option? Take an optional ferry ride back to the city (ferry ticket not included). During high season, we also offer a convenient Sausalito bike drop-off service for an additional fee, allowing you to leave your bike in Sausalito and enjoy the rest of your day hassle-free.

We went into the shop that is by where the team turns around. The man in the shop was most helpful. He pointed out our route on his map in the wall and explained exactly how to get to Sausalito. We cycled there in no time and had a lovely lunch. We then cycled back but you can get a return ferry.
This was a fabulous experience. We booked on-line and got a good discount. The manager was very friendly and went through the wall map with suggesting of places to stop, photo opportunities etc. He then got us to test our bikes for size, gears etc. We cycled over the bridge and had a lovely taco 🌮 lunch in Sausalito. Feeling a bit tired 😴 we caught the ferry which had some marvellous views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate bridge
Bikes were in great condition. We rented an electric bike and a regular bike. Staff at Bay city rentals were friendly and super helpful.
Perfect! Booking, collection and return was super easy. The bikes were great, had everything we need, the locks and handlebar bags were great. Really enjoyed our trip. Would definitely recommend
We gad a great ride, Alex our guide was very knowledgeable. Lovely scenery. We used electric bikes which were very good.
Amazing trip and view. The personnel was so nice and enthousiastic and explained well. With the electric bikes it was easy peasy and we could concentrate on the beautiful surroundings.
We had an amazing time with Ryan, he was super helpful and informative, lovely ride and lovely views, would highly recommend!
Pre-booked guided trip from San Francisco across Golden Gate Bridge to Sausilito. Arrived and was informed Ryan will be our guide for the trip. As it was just my partner and me, It made the trip more personal with Ryan providing extensive knowledge and history of San Francisco. Having Ryan as guide was a blast and so much fun and he a top bloke. We would only consider doing another bike tour/trip if Ryan was our guide.
Adam was an extremely passionate and knowledgeable tour guide, with loads of great facts about SF. Thanks for a great time!
Staff was very friendly and helpful. Loved that they provided directions and a map. The bikes were in good condition, no problems at all.
All perfect but one of the bikes was broken. Didn't notice untill going uphill. So without being able to change gear or put pressure on the pedals one of us had to walk every slight uphill. You'd expect some compassion and/or refund of one of the bikes but all was said was ... I see, We'll fixe it. .. . For the next one..
Amazing ride!! Highly recommended, tour guides were knowledgeable 😊 going over the Golden Gate Bridge was definitely a highlight of our trip.
Adam is the MAN! Living legend gave us a great detailed tour of his city. He is super passionate and professional in what he does. Would definitely recommend Adam and the guys at Bay City Bikes. Adam will certainly go down as the greatest tour guides I’ve had, keep being awesome Adam! 👑
Marcus was the best!!! Great instructions about where to go and how our e-bikes worked. He gave an awesome route and all the best photo spots. Highly recommended.
Adam did give a perfect bike tour in the rain! Enjoy all the way thank you Adam our tour guide true the San fransisco golden gate bridge
Adam was a fantastic, knowledgeable, and passionate guide. And Marcus at the front desk was a lifesaver (because we were running late.) Would 100% recommend.
Such a great experience. The best way to get around and see lots of the city! We covered tons of ground and would definitely recommend electric bikes.
We rented e-bikes and did a big loop. Golden Gate Bridege, Battery Spencer, Sausalito, back to the Presidio and Golden Gate Park. We stopped at Ghirardelli square for a treat before returning the bikes. What an epic SF day! Bikes, service, and convenience were all 5 star.
First time in SF, we rented 2 electric bikes with the ferry tickets option. After a couple of miles it was obvious that the bikes were poorly maintained. Brakes were not grippy enough (and you need grip when you go down the road from the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito), the front wheels were wiggly, and the overall bikes sounded loose. Cherry on the cake : the ferry tickets are sold $18 whereas you can purchase them for $14 at the pier. Of course we got no compensation upon bikes' return. "You can't expect perfection from a rental bike" is not the right answer to our complaints. $172 (!!) poorly spent, fortunately the journey was beautiful.
Very helpful and comprehensive . We talked though the options of electric or kinetic , and I’m glad we opted for the electric assist . It was a lot more expensive , and the insurance doesn’t cover theft . We also bought a ferry ticket as we were only there for one day and the cheaper option of buying one ourselves was complicated
Great way to spend the day discovering the city! The bike was very comfortable, the power was enough to go up even the steepest of the San Francisco hills (I am a woman in her 50's), and the battery lasted me without problem (I still had 25% when I returned the bike). Awesome!
What a bunch of thieves. First of all 2 electric bike for the day is 75$ each meaning 150$ for a day (just saying, a mustang can be rented 120$) but more than that, my friend got a defective one. The battery died after a few hours (one round trip to Sausalito). We came back to the shop saying mine was still full and his, near empty, nothibg can be done except if you pay 25$ more for a recharge... that is thievery my friends. The owner tomd us that we should have called the number in case of incident (while explaining that if we have called the number, someine would have come with a truck and you should pay the repair anyway...). This is unacceptable and i don't know how they are still open... take a rental from the city, it would be cheaper, and you'll have more choices. Never again, thanks for nothing
The guide Adam was excellent. He loves San Francisco passionately and took us to places that were different to the norm and all very interesting. He was also a very nice person. The reason for 3 Stars is that eleven riders in our group was far too big and made it impossible to hear all the instructions when negotiating very busy city roads. We felt quite vulnerable. Adam was not at fault as he obviously doesn't determine the number of riders in the group. When we fed this back, we were told that it was busy Spring break and we should be road aware before booking this trip. Adam was consistently trying to give safety advice so it was more than road awareness that was needed to safely enjoy this guided tour.
Run fast around all the city is wonderfull, I can visit everything in one day. Electric bike is the best choice.
RENT YOUR BIKES ELSEWHERE The staff who rent out the bikes are clearly not trained to do this, and the manager is in absolute bad faith when it comes to acknowledging his responsibility... We arrived in the afternoon (3pm) to rent bikes and do the classic San Francisco / Sausalito tour, with a return ferry trip, as suggested in most guidebooks. To start with, the saleswoman didn't know the difference between the different types of rental bikes. That's wasn't a good start... We opt for electric bikes at $75/bike, having heard about SF's famous slopes. The saleswoman tells us that the store closes at 8pm, and offers to sell us ferry tickets (of course more expensive than directly at the port, but that's fair) to save time. At no point does she tell us that taking the 7.20pm ferry would mean arriving too late at the store, and that we'd have to pay $25/bike if we arrived after closing time. Which, of course, happens, as the ferry is running a little late. Of course, this is surely mentioned in the contract, but since the renter signs a paper contract that is immediately withdrawn and is not given a copy (and the staff can't even find your contract the next day!), there is no way of being properly informed of any problems we might encounter along the way. As a result, we ended up paying $20 for parking to keep the 2 bikes safe overnight + $50 for not returning them on time! In addition to the $150 for the bike rental, that's a very, very expensive renta, and a very bad customer experience during our few days in San Francisco ! The staff is probably recruited for the season, and not very well trained, but we can't really blame them... What upset us the most was that the owner, who was contacted on the phone by the sympathetic manager, didn't want to know anything and didn't even deign to come and talk to us. We have to pay and that's that. And from what we can see of his responses to previous complaints, for him everything is always the renter's fault (as is often the case in tourist areas, they don't care about customer service as tourists won't be coming back anyway), and never his own. So stay away from this company and rent your bikes elsewhere !
Wonderful experience, great way to see San Francisco and cross over the Golden Gate Bridge. We loved it.
Amazing experience!! Electric bike definitely worth the extra money when it came to the steeper hills. The views were breath taking !!
Riding the bikes across the Golden Gate Bridge with my daughter was an experience that will not be forgotten. Thanks for being part of our memories.
I don't recommend this service, it's predatory. Went last Saturday after reserving 3 E-Bikes earlier that morning. Got there and was greeted, then was asked to sign their documents. After signing, the clerk asks for a card to place a $1500 deposit for the bikes. It was the first time I heard of a deposit being needed, and I wasn't financially prepared to place a hold that large. I let him know that I wasn't able to do that, so he makes a call to a supervisor. He then asks if I got the confirmation email saying that there's a deposit required. I check and see it mentioned at the bottom, but mentioned that this is only stated AFTER you've paid for the reservation. He then begins to barter to see how much I could come up with, and asks for phone(s), jewelry, etc. as collateral. He even asked if one of the women I was with would give up some jewelry that she had on. I asked if getting their insurance would eliminate the deposit and he said it doesn't. After another phone call, he offered a reduced deposit of $800 for the bikes but I declined and requested a refund. He was told by his management that a refund wouldn't be issued, and mentioned that he was "trying to help me not lose my money". I left. Called back a few moments ago today, a lady answered. I explained the situation but before I could finish, she began to raise her voice and got defensive when I mentioned their deposit process and the lack of transparency on the website. I felt gaslit, the call ended with her raising her voice saying: "then why are we even talking? Why are you calling back trying to tell me how to run a business?" Based on reviews below I know management/the owner will reply to this defending why they did what they did, and it's a shame. If they reply at all. I've rented E-Bikes in other cities where this wasn't a concern. I work in high end retail, and we never treat clients this way. I'd like my money refunded. I wonder what issues I would've faced had I given them the deposit, would they have found a technicality to try and keep it? This was a poor way to treat a person visiting a city, and I can't imagine the situations others have been in with this business.
We had such a good time doing this! We had the bikes all day long and returned them at the end of the day with half of the battery still left. We traveled all over the city (approximately 30 miles total). We rode them like regular bikes, used the battery sparingly, mostly to assist in climbing the hills. It was so cool to see the city and the scenery from the bike. It was a totally different experience than seeing the city from a car. Best part of all was eating a hot fudge sundae at Ghirardelli guilt free after a day of bike riding! I would recommend this to anyone who wants to see this beautiful city from a new perspective.
Rented 2 electric bicycles with my wife to ride around SF and over the Golden Gate bridge into Sausalito. From the start we were greeted by excellent customer service, with instructions on how to properly use the bikes, where to ride (maps provided and also conveniently located on the bikes themselves), and helpful tips/recommendations. Helmets and bike locks were also provided and easy to use. The bikes were perfect and we had a blast! Definitely suggest paying extra for the electric bikes given the city's hilly terrain. We were also able to purchase our ferry tickets directly with Bay City for our return from Sausalito, making things a breeze. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for bike rentals!
It was lovely to experience the city on these bikes that make everything easier. The staff is very nice, giving you safety instructions and directions, while also answering whatever question pops up in your head. 10/10
Worst experience. Rented all day electric bikes. Was told battery would last 40 miles but if kept in low mode would go all day. Battery went down a notch immediately. After 19 miles over the bridge to Tiburon we only had two dots of power left and had to spend more money to take ferry back to SF and asked for a fresh battery because we spent the money for an all day electric bike rental. Wasn't told that the battery switch was $35.00's extra per bike. Battery stopped working in the Presidio on hills. Called shop and they wouldn't come switch out bike or pick us up and was told we were responsible for getting faulty bikes back to shop. So we turned bikes in early because battery wasn't working. They wouldn't compensate us at all and sprung the extra $35.00 per bike charge on us. Worst experience!
My family and I had been itching to get back to San Francisco, this time renting electric bikes to ride over the bridge AND to Golden Gate Park. It was really easy to get all the way out a long the coast with our electric bikes. San Fran has closed its western shore road to cars on weekends, so we went from the Bridge out to the Ocean where the whole path out to the zoo is closed off to automobiles! It’s fantastic. We will always use this company - their bikes are excellent and their capable and friendly staff make you feel very welcomed. They include a helmet too but you can always bring your own. Bring a jacket as it gets very cold on the shore.
Customer service before and after hiring the bike was terrible. Bike was unsafe for use, staff employed with no authority to deal with complaints. And the aftercare has been shockingly poor! Stay clear of this rental company at all costs!
The worse experience ever. Our experience was a disaster from start to finish. The electric bike left the bike shop with no safety check and no test ride. Whilst riding the bikes brakes didn’t work, we had to walk our bikes back to the store as it was unsafe. When we returned them with full batteries, 3 different levels of employees wouldn’t accept responsibility or deal with our request for a refund. 8 days later we are still waiting for a response to 4 emails. I would recommend you avoid this company at all costs!
Great day in San Francisco! Our ride over the Golden Gate Bridge was amazing! The bikes were excellent!
Fantastic-I had reserved online and the pickup process was fast and simple. They made sure i knew how to use the bike before I left and I had no issues all day. Drop off was just as easy. I highly recommend renting an electric bike-it made the day so pleasant and fun. Great location, too!
Worst service ever! I got charged 45usd because I returned the bikes at 7:33pm when they closed at 7:30pm (only 3 minutes late). Additionally the manager was very very rude to us ! Also, the bikes aren’t in very good conditions. I do not recommend this place to rent at all !!!!!!
Great customer service. The e-bikes were in great condition. This is the only way to really see San Fransisco!
Our family of 4 - from FLAT FLORIDA - had planned on doing a self-guided "Urban Hike" when we stumbled upon Bay City Bikes. This was literally GENIUS! We are diverse in our level of stamina; two of us are fitness enthusiasts, 2 of us are NOT. The electric assisted bikes allowed us to take in the Bay area from Pier 39 to across the Golden Gate bridge and back over a 5.5 hour timeframe...without a single whine or complaint! ;-) Christiano was very efficient, informative and friendly in prepping us for our adventure and returning the equipment was quick and easy. HIGHLY recommend! (for reference, ages 55, 49, 17 and 16)
I would never book with these people. Unexpected fees that were never mentioned and staffing was rude.
They were not at address listed, walked to new address and they were shuttered up. I had to call them and wait. They also listed on their website $13 cheaper than what I was charged and they would not honor a discount. Seemed abrupt and rude. The bike was very nice and easy to ride.
We decided to spend a little extra and get electric bikes which made the trip so much better. The hills were no problem and the bikes were in excellent condition. There was a staffer riding the route all day so if we had any issues all we had to do was call. We made the trip across the Golden Gate bridge and into Sausalito where we had a delightful lunch and stroll, and then took the ferry back. Excellent!
Rented electric bikes and cycled over the Golden Gate Bridge getting the ferry back from Sausalito. Really enjoyable day - would definitely recommend the electric bikes. Good service and bikes well maintained. Only down side was we bought ferry tickets from the company so we wouldn’t have to get them later and only realised we didn’t have them when we got to Sausalito. In fairness we could have asked ourselves but asked so many questions we forgot this one so would have been nice if they’d given them to us automatically to save us a phone call from Sausalito when we got there. Cost of the tickets was refunded with no issues on our return though to so no real harm done. Would use this company again.
If something went wrong you don't have anyone to speak to. They do not give refunds, only a free rental next time; so if you're a tourist that does not plan to visit SF again, say bye bye to your money; Worst service EVER!!
****DO NOT RENT FROM HERE**** Hands down the worst customer service I have ever experienced. There electric bicycle broke down and no one informed us that there was road side assistance. Everyone I spoke to was rude and did not care about the inconveniences they caused. To top it off they charged my credit card without my permission. This place is shady. Do not waste your time here.
We rented 3 electric bikes for riding over the whole San Francisco, golden gate, some woods and sausalito. A whole day only for this. Our day was ruined when we discovered that one bike can’t break and other’s chain kept jumping off. Somehow we made it to the rental and had a little argument.
We rented 2 ebikes in Fisherman’s location. It was was our plan we had wanted to do in San Francisco for so long. The store we rented bikes were very crowded but all the staff at the store were friendly and gave us the useful information. Also, the paperwork prowess went smoothly. Biking on the bridge was so much fun. The bikes were in good condition. We had really nice time. Thank you!
