Itinerary
Meet in the Jackson Square neighborhood – a 10-minute walk from Downtown San Francisco – in the late afternoon to start your walking tour. Come hungry, as you’ll be getting lots of food on this 3-hour tour, which follows a flat, easy route. Following your expert local guide, delve behind the scenes of Little Italy’s food and restaurant scene, hearing fascinating historical facts and stories along the way, like how this neighborhood was once part of the Barbary Coast – San Francisco’s red-light district in the 1800s during the California Gold Rush. You'll also visit hidden Prohibition-era tunnels where booze was smuggled into the city.
Though you’ll learn a lot of interesting history, this tour is about the food. Enjoy a cheese tasting at a trendy wine bar. Then indulge in an Italian wood-fired pizza made in the oldest pizza oven on the West Coast; built in 1935, this treasured tool was copied by Wolfgang Puck at Spago and Alice Waters at Chez Panisse. Pop into a gourmet boutique shop for a sweet-and-savory treat such as artisan agave caramel drizzled over popcorn- yum! Top your culinary journey off with a visit to a historic Italian bookshop-turned-café, where you'll fill your own delicate cannoli with an Italian cannoli maker.
You’ll find that all the tastings add up to a satisfying meal. Your tour ends in the evening a few blocks from your original departure point, where you’re free to continue exploring this fabulous San Francisco neighborhood bustling with vibrant nightlife. Please note: Places visited and tastings are subject to change based on availability.

Great restaurants & drinks in north beach!
A truly beautiful way to experience a fabulous city. Food was excellent, our guide knowledgeable and very friendly. We will be booking tours in the future. Highly recommend food tours to all travelers who like to experience something special.
I absolutely loved this walking food tour through North Beach! From the moment we met Nikki, our incredible guide, it felt like we were reconnecting with an old friend. Her warmth, humor, and deep knowledge of the neighborhood made the experience unforgettable. Every stop was thoughtfully chosen — from hidden gems to iconic bites — and the food was phenomenal. What really set this tour apart was the vibe: casual, fun, and full of great conversation. Nikki effortlessly brought our group together, and by the end, it felt like we were all longtime friends sharing stories over delicious plates. I especially appreciated the personal touches — from dog talk to travel tips to local restaurant recommendations (can’t wait to try Italico and explore The Mission next!). This isn’t just a food tour — it’s a celebration of community, culture, and connection. If you're looking for something special in San Francisco, this is it. I’ll be recommending it to everyone I know and can’t wait to join another tour soon. Thank you, Nikki and the Avital team, for such a memorable experience!
The North Beach food tour was amazing! Our guide Nikki was so fun and knowledgeable about the neighborhood and cuisine. The pesto pasta (non-seafood option) at Sotta Mare was the best I've ever had. Hearing stories of each restaurant truly made me feel more connected to the food we were enjoying. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting San Francisco or any locals who just want something fun to do.
I loved the experience. It was relaxed. I made new friends. This is a great way to discover a vibrant and historic part of San Francisco.
Nicole was the best, most passionate and engaging food tour guide ever! Loved the restaurant and food selections too. And the “embrace the quirky” great historical fun facts were awesome. Thank you for a wonderful time! We plan to take more Avital tours, for sure.
Evan was our guide. He was professional and added just enough history to make more than a food tour. Only thing my husband and I would suggest (everytjing served was very good by the way) is to add a second option instead of just serving one item. We would never have ordered the items served and enjoyed each spot!
We highly recommend the progressive dinner walking tour of North Beach with Avital. Nikki kept a reasonable pace as she led a small group of us from Washington Square through the Italian community, where we sampled Cioppino with crab and shellfish, a delicious pork Bao bun, hot fresh pizza from the oldest pizza oven on the West Coast, and finally two flavors of creamy, luscious gelato! Her inside stories of the families and history behind each restaurant made the tour memorable. All the food was fresh, hot, and scrumptious! This was much more fun than randomly choosing a restaurant and sitting the whole time! We were so full! The tour starts at 3:00 pm and ends about 6:00, and alcohol can be added to the package (optional). No need for dinner after this! Take a Lyft or Uber to a show, or head to a comedy club or opera after the tour! Dress casually and warmly, depending on weather.
Very fun tour, friendly and knowledgeable guides, varied and delicious food selection, and good information on the history of the neighborhood. A great way to spend the afternoon for locals or visitors.
I loved this experience! Wow! The food, stories, and fellow travelers were just wonderful. The ciopinno soup was by far my favorite. The four other guests were just lovely and the walk was more like a stroll, nice and easy. Danielle was our docent and she just rocked. She took care of us which I really enjoyed. I liked not having any responsibility navigating a busy city. Our first progressive dinner and totally not our last! A great value and worth every penny.
So fun, great food, drink and tour guide - Alexis. Highly recommend - great way to spend the afternoon
We loved this tour! Our guide Hailey was wonderful, full of knowledge and it was a very laid back, tasty experience.
The firs two restaurants were fantastic! The third stop was unprepared for us and adversely affected that experience and the 4th stop. Also we had purchased the alcohol pairing which was minimal. At the third stop we received an estimated 1 oz of wine. The previous restaurant we had received a glass of wine. It seems like 3 drinks might be a reasonable expectation for a 3 hour tour.
The tour was a Christmas gift from very good friend, it was much appreciated but with some reservation due to my my strong understanding of the North Beach Area, being in the area for the past 30 years and feeling i knew everything there was to know about the Italian neighborhood. Much to my surprise the guide Hanna not only imparted some great facts about famed the North Beach area but she the four eateries that she took us to were all newbies to us. The Chippino was outstanding unique and well flavored, the stories she shared were great and accurate. The highlight was as we sat in a beautiful compact, out of the way old wood burning pizza restaurant , she asked if we would like to hear one of her songs, as she had told us that she was a musician, Whoa on top of being a wonderful host her voice was outstanding. Great outstanding 3 1/2 hour tour.
My friend wanted to do something different for her birthday, and we decided to be tourists in our own city with this walking food tour. We had a terrific time on this tour, learned some new facts about San Francisco, and the food/ drinks were delicious. The restaurants we went were not obvious spots, and the portions were healthy. I especially loved our tour guide, Haley. Her demeanor was so lovely and she was great at keeping us moving and entertained. I want to go back on another tour in a different part of the city.
Ben was very informative. It was a great experience. We not only took us to great restaurants but had great information to share about the area.
Learned a lot from Meesha even though I’d done this tour before. She provided superb service (anticipated wine refills for our group) and great info!
I had a tour of North Beach by Ben. My girlfriend and I had so much fun and we ate an incredible amount of food. Ben is also a really funny and chill guy and it was great meeting him! Our entree was at Sotto Mare and the cioppino is absolutely fantastic. Definitely would recommend the food tour and will definitely look forward to going on another tour with Avital!
This was a great food tour. all the places we visited had great food and drink. Haley was very knowledgeable of the area and history. She also a pleasure to spend the afternoon with. I would definitely recommend this tour and hopefully you get Haley as your guide.
we took local friends out for a fun event going on this food tour instead of dinner out. Haley our tour guide was amazing, as well as the places she took us to. all great local places to try. I would highly recommend it.
The tour was awesome. I love how history/art/culture was incorporated into the culinary experience. And the tour guide, Hannah, was just fabulous. She was so bright, bubbly, and knowledgable. I would recommend this tour (and Hannah) to anyone that's a fellow foodie and wants to explore SF.
We did a culinary tour of North Beach and had Hannah as our guide. She was informative and a great story-teller! I enjoyed learning everything she told us. And the food was delicious! As a vegetarian in a group of meat-eaters, I felt well catered for. Thank you!
We had a great time. Our tour guide, Blandina, made it amazing. She had SO much knowledge about the area and everywhere we went . . . the food was delicious. We would definitely do it again.
Hannah was super knowledgable about the areas and restaurants visited along our tour, giving a great insight to the city! I'm only sorry I hadn't known of these tours for prior visits to the city, I'll be sure to recommend to any visitors.
We had so much fun on this tour. I live in SF but had a friend visiting from NY and this was a great way to entertain and learn about my city. Food was delicious and Hannah was great!
We had a perfect sunny day with Hannah, lots of useful information and local knowledge, great food and great company! Unfortunately we had to rush through he last section of the trip due to timing issues but Hannah made sure we made it through all the stops! Thank you Hannah!
A perfect crisp fall day in San Francisco made even better by being on the North Beach Culinary Experience! Ben was a great friendly tour guide with fun facts and information about North Beach and its Italian roots. All the food choices were fantastic and can’t wait to book another trip to the city to visit these restaurants! This is also the best tour group around, very professional, fun and interesting,
Had a great culinary tour with Hannah. We enjoyed every stop, enjoyed the company of the other guests. Had a very wonderful three hours with the group. By the way, the pizza was outstanding.
This was my first food tasting experience and lucked out by having Haley as our guide and for the North Beach area. Haley knew the history of the area and told us things I had never heard, even growing up in the area. The restaurants provided a variety of delicious foods and I look forward to returning.
Would totally recommend this tour with Ben our tour leader. Ben was a very professional, knowledgable, and showed a fantastic knowledge of the different food establishments in the North Beach area. We met outside the Italian Athletic Club, and proceeded to four fantastic food stops to try out, seafood, Chinese fusion, Italian Pizza wood fired speciality and finally on to a funky gelato shop to cap off a brilliant tour, some stops and special highlights thru the North Beach area. Would thoroughly recommend this fantastic food tour
We took the North Beach tour with Haley and had a great time. Haley was a great guide - lots of good information and great food! We ate a lot, so definitely come hungry! I would also recommend doing the tour at the beginning of your stay, so you can use all the great restaurant recommendations for the rest of the time in the city.
We recently booked Avital food tours as a gift of appreciation for 20 members of our team. Although only 11 of our guests showed up, we all had a blast and Avital was able to accommodate to the change in group size on the spot. Saying that we enjoyed our experience would be an understatement. Our guide Ben was interactive, knowledgeable, and lots of fun! The North Beach tour was truly great with lots of history and DELICIOUS food-- I don't believe that I would have had the opportunity to learn the things that we did if it wasn't for this tour. Highly recommended!!
Had a a very enjoyable tour with Willda, the guide. Willda was energetic, friendly and clearly loves what she do - very much recommended. We visited four restaurant - 2 for appetizers, one main meal (Pizza) and dessert (Gelato). All choices were very good and came with explanations and other narratives from Willda or the respective restaurant's people. Overall - recommended.
Hanna did an excellent job keeping our group well fed, entertained and provided interesting stories and SF history! We made new friends along the way! Great way to eat our way around North Beach for 3 hours!
I really enjoyed the tour. The historical aspect that I didn't realize was part of the tour made it special. A couple of the stops were worth the time just because of the eclectic atmosphere. Haley our guide was terrific.
I am feeling so blessed that I was able to spend an afternoon touring and tasting around the vibrant neighborhood of North Beach. Our tour guide Haley was a fellow food lover, and her enthusiasm for the food and stories of the area was infectious. I loved the opportunity to meet people from all over the country, and try out some eats from carefully chosen restaurants I would not have know about. I chose the optional alcohol pairing, which I believe complimented the flavors in the dishes perfectly, but it would be enjoyable without. Thank you Haley for the fabulous time!
Our guide, Hannah, gave us a wonderful food tour through North Beach, with new twists on familiar foods, ESPECIALLY the pizza! And we met some interesting foodies visiting from outside the U.S. You won’t regret making this a San Francisco experience.
I booked a walking food tour with Avital Tours (I forget which one, but it had wine) in North Beach for my team. Everyone on my team had a great time and really enjoyed all the food. Haley was awesome, giving us bits of history about the restaurants and the area. Being a native San Franciscan I pride myself on knowing the city, and I was pleasantly surprised by some of the history Haley provided, which I didn't know. Everything was well set up, there was no waiting at any of the places we went to eat. I would highly recommend a walking food tour with Avital Tours for anyone, a visitor to the city, or for a work team building event, and I would recommend Haley as a guide. Thank you again Haley for the great day!
I spent the week in San Francisco on business on July 10th. One of my colleagues suggested we explore the Avital Culinary experience for our group dinner event. There was a total of 23 of us and we had the best dining experience ever. Walking around and learning the history of the neighborhood and the GREAT food was outstanding. Everything was done in excellence and our culinary curator, Margherita was OUTSTANDING. She was lively, personable and very knowledgeable of the history of Italian culture and food in North Beach. Each restaurant treated us like royalty. The food was by far the best I had ever tasted. It's been a week since our trip and everyone is still talking about this amazing experience. SALUTE Avital team! and most of all, Margherita, YOU ROCK!.
A big Thank You to Margherita and Dominic for taking such good care of us on our North Beach food tour. The food at each restaurant was excellent, and learning the history of the North Beach area, Chinatown, and SF was a big bonus. Food tours really are the best way to discover a new city. Not only did we have a wonderful time, but we left with great tips for things to see and do, and a list of other other restaurants to try. If it is your first time in SF and you like Italian, book a food tour of North Beach with Margherita. You won't be disappointed!
I had never been on a food tour before. This was fun, informative and delicious. I liked meeting new people in our group, and Erolina was a great guide! I enjoyed learning some history of places in SF I have been many times, but didn't really know anything about. The food was more than abundant, with something to please every palate. I would highly recommend this tour with this very professional company.
This was a wonderful tour with great foods and a delightfully fun, charismatic and knowledgeable guide named Ben. The foods? Had we been staying in the city longer, we'd have eaten again at every stop, such was the quality of the samplings. Ben will also point out other restaurants with stellar, long-time reputations while also regaling your group with fascinating information on one the country's great cities. No, not the old, "San Francisco was first settled in blah blah blah..." His stories feel more like little secrets you won't find in any Chamber of Commerce literature. Because Ben comes to the tour with a strong background in food and nutrition, his expertise make the whole experience that much richer. Another plus was that you don't leave the tour feeling like some ancient Roman glutton. You'll be sated for sure, but you won't be plied with an over-abundance of food, as sometimes happens on these tours. My advice? Eat up at every stop. The portions are perfect. Our only regret is not taking this tour early in our last trip to San Francisco, for we surely would have tried these places and many of the others Ben raved about. We came in just for the day for this tour. Do yourself a favor and take this tour soon after you arrive. If you're lucky, you'll get Ben as your guide.
This was our first food tour ever and we loved it! We will be booking another one for an upcoming trip to LA. Our guide, Erolina, was great - super friendly, knowledgeable and entertaining! The food was great and we will definitely be back to eat more Tomaso’s pizza!
The girls did a great job! We truly enjoyed ourselves and the food was delicious!!! We were really impressed with all of the knowledge our tour guides had!
This food and cultural tour of the Italian neighborhood of San Francisco (with a quick visit to Chinatown) was a real treat! Our young guide was enthusiastic, informative, and responsive to our questions and needs. We sampled the best cioppino I’ve ever had, as well as some excellent pizza and Peking duck bun. Each restaurant was charming and comfortable, and would have been appropriate for families, people of all ages, couples, singles...anybody! We already are planning another tour for the next time we go to NYC, and probably will buy another as a gift for a hard-to-please relative. What a great way to spend an afternoon!
This is our second team building experience with Avital and 2nd time with Margherita as our guide; which says a lot! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the unique experience. Last year we explored the Mission District, this year was North Beach/Tendernob. The food and pairings were excellent & our warm and knowledgeable guide made for another memorable team build! Thank you for this creative take & the passion of all involved.
Phillip was awesome! He was not only very knowledgeable (I learned a bunch of new information about a city I thought I had a good knowledge base) but funny too! It was an absolutely stunning day--so much fun to be outside. I enjoyed the food and the walking between stops was a good way to chat and move between restaurants. Wholeheartedly recommend for anyone interested in learning more and having a culinary experience along the way!
My colleagues and I enjoyed an amazing food tour hosted by Anais in North Beach, SF. We had a Cioppino (the best part) at Sotto Mare, an Arancino at Barbara Pinseria, Pizza at Tommaso's, and gelato at Lush Gelato. Despite the recently rainy days in SF, we were lucky enough to have a sunny day on top of Anais's storytelling that painted a beautiful backdrop to a memorable evening. 10/10 would join again. Note: We didn't have the alcohol pairing.
Great food stops! Learned a lot about the history of North Beach and San Francisco. Awesome experience. Ben did a great job!
