traveling on a small group tour is definitely the way to go. we saw more sites, were able to go where bigger tour buses could not go, and our tour guide. Randy was so personable and so knowledgeable, he made this tour such a pleasure.

This small island was once a fort, a military prison, and a maximum security federal penitentiary. Alcatraz Island is the site of the abandoned federal prison, the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States, early military fortifications, and natural features such as rock pools and a seabird colony (mostly western gulls, cormorants, and egrets). It measures 1,675 feet (511 m) by 590 feet (180 m) and is 135 feet (41 m) at highest point during mean tide.[5] The total area of the island is reported to be 22 acres (8.9 ha).[1] Landmarks on the island include the Main Cellhouse, Dining Hall, Lighthouse, the ruins of the Warden's House and Social Hall, Parade Grounds, Building 64, Water Tower, New Industries Building, Model Industries Building, and the Recreation Yard. The boat back to the city depart every 30 minutes.

Pros: The driver/tour guide was really knowledgeable about San Francisco and gave us really great information about the city and recommended some restaurants and where to go back to do some more self guided tour. It was a small group (14 people). Cons: We were supposed to be picked up at 8:30 am from our hotel but he came around 9:05 am. The actual tour started at 9:30 am till about 12:30 pm. The tour listed between 7 and 8 hour guided tour but the rest of the tour after 12:30 was self guided tour to Alcatraz (which is about 2 hrs.). So, That's about 5 hours total. There were about 5 stops and we were allowed 10-11 minutes to take some photos and enjoy the views unlike what is listed on the brochure that different stops have different times allowed ( for example, on the brochure it should be 25 minutes allowed at the Golden Gate bridge but we were actually allowed only 11 minutes). We just pass by the Fisherman's Wharf but in the brochure, we should been allowed 20 minutes in the area. Although the driver/guide was very nice, he didn't offer to take photos of anyone in the group (most people are shy to ask, like me and my partner). In general, we expected a guided tour between 7-8 hours but we only got 3 hours. The whole excursion is just about 5-6 hours. 3 hours - guided tour of the City of San Francisco 2-3 hours - self-guided tour to Alcatraz It was a bit pricey for this excursion but I have nothing to compare it with because it was our first time in San Francisco. I will still recommend it but expect less of what they advertise.
We booked it for Friday, April 24. Thursday night after 10:00pm we got a text saying the tour was cancelled. Of course we didn't see this message until Friday morning. We rebooked for Saturday, April 25. Again, Friday night after 10:00pm they sent a text saying the tour was cancelled. So FRUSTRATING and unprofessional. Apparently Alcatraz was closed for dock repairs but you would think a tour company would know that and already have an allotment of tickets.
This was a great tour. We did Alcatraz in the morning and San Francisco in the afternoon. At Alcatraz we were able to meet a former inmate, now author of his experiences at Alcatraz. He signed his book and we got a photo! A rare and exciting experience! San Francisco was brought to life for us by our fantastic tour guide, Buddy. I don't believe there is an area we didn't stop at or at least drive by. His vast knowledge of all things San Francisco was incredible! We learned so much as well. We were so glad we booked this tour and did not try to sightsee on our own as we would have missed so much. Highly recommend!!
Worst Experience. NEGATIVE 5 stars. Booked a tour of SF and Alcatraz. After 10:00pm I was notified the tour was cancelled (I was already asleep so didn’t see the text til I was ready to leave for the tour). Rebooked for the next day. Same exact thing happened again. Message at 10:08pm saying tour was cancelled. Won’t use them ever again!
I was a bit disappointed because we did not get to see everything that was listed on the itinerary, specifically Nob Hill and haight Asbury, but otherwise it was good.
Very interesting and informative nice and friendly had a great time randy was very nice he showed us so much and a van was better than a bus
Whilst we loved the tour we had a few issues leading up to this. We booked a morning tour with the afternoon at Alcatraz but at around 9pm the evening before our trip we got a message to say that the day had been swapped around and we would be visiting Alcatraz in the morning. I appreciate the terms say they have the right to change things but we had to rearrange our plans to accommodate this. The tour operator was very good and did pay our transport costs to get to the ferry in the morning but things didn’t go smoothly for us. First of all we couldn’t get an Uber so used the tram, this dropped us a 20 minute walk away from the ferry, we had 25 minutes to get there. Thankfully we are fit enough to make it but it was tight. Secondly, we finished Alcatraz around 2 hours before the bus was due to collect us so we were left hanging around until pick up time, he was also 30 minutes late so lots of time wasted. The tour itself was fab and Mike was very knowledgeable but if they change the layout then we should be offered a choice of times to go to Alcatraz as we would have gone at least an hour later. We spoke to two other couples who also felt the same. As I say this is a great trip but would have been a better experience if the original itinerary was kept to.
Extremely informative and interesting. Tour guide very knowledgeable and witty. As we were only here for 2 complete days we'll worth the experience.
Excellent tour guide called gerry very knowledgeable and alcatraz trip was excellent viator travel excellent
Great tour within San Francisco but I find it a little expensive. Just need to lessen the price or next time include at least free lunch.
Learning the history of the area from our tour guide Buddy. Alcatraz, painted ladies and Lombard Street. The history of Presidio was very interesting. All around enjoyable tour!
Feedback given to viator and agent already. Poor trip. Alcatraz as expected. Tour was dreadful. Guide was awful
We both had a great time taking in all the sights of san francisco. Took some great pictures too. Love learning about history
Saw much more of San Francisco than we ever would have on our own. Tour guide was very knowledgeable of the city and its history. We learned a lot!
Alcatraz tour but disappointed our driver told us we didn't have to make the long line since we booked the ticket with you. But they told us there that we had to still make the line.
Michael contacted me to let me know exact where to meet him and what time. He was very knowledgeable about the city and it's history. A great way to spend your day while waiting for an upcoming flight. Really enjoy see Alcatraz and meeting It's last surviving resident.
Was an awesome tour Randy was a great tour guide you won't be disappointed. Was a day full of adventures.
The city tour was ok. Could have been longer and ito more of the history of the city. Alcatraz was well worth the trip. A lot of history about the prison and the actual conditions are still intact
Jerry was a fantastic guide, his knowledge and personal anecdotes made the tour extra enjoyable. He made sure we had enough time to enjoy each stop and still got us to the Alcatraz ferry in plenty of time.
We were picked up on time outside the Hotel we were staying at. There were 4 of us plus the driver Randy Cowen, a very pleasant and well-spoken gentleman, who was very easy to get on with and talk to. The vehicle he drove was very new and was comfortable to drive in, it had all the bells and whistles and made for a pleasant experience. Randy's knowledge of the city was second to none and he took us on an extremely memorable tour. Going up to the Twin Peaks and seeing the views of the city was one of the highlights. If we return to San Francisco, we will have no problem using this company again and hopefully have the pleasure of having Randy as our guide. Thanks Rosanna and Bill
We really enjoyed this tour. We got to see lots of the San Francisco sights and enjoyed Alcatraz as well.
