Itinerary
See the most iconic sites of San Francisco – the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Union Square, Civic Center, Fisherman’s Wharf, and a lot more!
The tour departs from Fisherman’s Wharf, taking you through the main spots in San Francisco like Embarcadero, Barbary Coast, the Ferry Building, Financial District, and right into San Francisco’s central shopping area at Union Square, before heading to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. At North Vista Point you can walk across the 1.7 mile span of the bridge, or you can explore the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center and the Presidio. The tour also goes into Golden Gate Park, one of the world’s largest man-made havens and one of the most popular places to see in San Francisco. With several stops throughout the park, you can visit the California Academy of Sciences, the De Young Museum, the Japanese Tea Garden, or the Botanical Gardens. The tour through Haight Ashbury, you will experience the so called “Hippie District”, and the Civic Center area with many architectural landmarks, such as impressive City Hall, the Opera House and Symphony Hall. Union Square, Chinatown and North Beach with its world-famous crooked Lombard Street, before returning to Fisherman’s Wharf, stopping at various waterfront locations, including Pier 39 where you can see the popular sea lions and explore the restaurants, shopping and many attractions for more fun in San Francisco.
Sausalito Tour
Take this tour from North Vista Point to go into Marin County and stops in charming Sausalito where you can hop off the bus, stroll around, shop, dine, visit various art galleries and enjoy a relaxing lunch by the waterfront. On the way back, you will get the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge while driving across the bridge to South Vista Point. From there you have breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay (weather permitting), and on a nice day you can see the San Francisco skyline, Alcatraz Island and the Bay Bridge, making it a great photo stop for every visitor. The tour continues back to the North Vista point where you can transfer to the Official City tour.
San Francisco Night Tour

We booked a 2 Day Hop on Hop off plus Night tour experience in SFO. Enjoyed the commentary, the Day route gave great insight into the stops we would choose later to hop off at and explore. Professional tour staff. The service operates every 15 minutes so you. never felt the time waiting was annoying. Downloading the App is very helpful for extra bits of info like specific address stops and how far away bus is. We were so impressed that we will do same experience in Chicago and London. The Night tour was crazy cold on the Top open air but super fun.
Brilliant trip around San Francisco. If you choose to go across the Golden Gate, wear something warm as it’s very windy and cold.
The Big Bus red route seemed to cover a nice collection of sights around the SF area with stops at the Wharf, Pier 39, Golden Gate Bridge among many others. The favorite was crossing over the bridge on the other side to take scenic pictures of the bridge and the skyline along with Alcatraz. We rode the first trip all the way through, with only one hop off after we got over the bridge, which took about 2.5 hours. The app allows you to see where you are and where all the buses are located so you can estimate how long you'll wait for the next bus if you hop off. Another favorite was the blue route bus which is a non-stop one from the starting point to Treasure Island via Bay Bridge which had some great scenic picture opportunities on the other side of where you were on the red route after crossing Golden Gate. However, this side had the sunset added to your pics. Highly recommend stops at Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, Golden Gate Bridge and the park, and Treasure Island (Blue route).
We saw great sights and really enjoyed the hop on hop off flexibility. Once we got the requisite cable car ride taken care of, this tour made it very easy to get to the spots that we wanted to see. The buses were frequent and easy to find, once we knew which bus to take. The only negative I’ve got is that we spent over an hour looking for a bus that said “Skyline” on it and saw none, though we saw tons of the “Big Bus”. Finally, out of desperation, I stepped on a Big Bus to ask if they knew where we could find a Skyline bus and he said “that’s us”! Perhaps this was just tourist ignorance on my part if it would have been nice to have all that clearly explained prior. We would do it again now that we know. After a lot of world travel, SF has quickly taken a Top 5 spot as one of our favorite cities!
We purchased the 2 day tour AND the night tour. When we showed up for the NIGHT tour, we were put on the wrong bus and ended up getting off half way through and had to pay an Uber to get back to our hotel. What a waste of time plus the cost of an Uber. Not happy.
If I could do it over again, I would have gone with the Big Bus Tours. This company does not answer its phone (I was trying to get a time table). We were never sure when our bus would show us...it was always very late...and the last bus starts at 4pm, so you really don't have any time to get off and enjoy anything. One of the drivers talked so fast we had no idea what he was saying, and also ran many red lights...very unsafe.
The experience was great!!!! Everyone was very nice not only with the big bus tour but in the city as well.
This was a waste of our time and money. We used it for maybe an hour the first day never used it the second day. When we got off the cruise ship, we had to walk over three blocks to turn in our tickets even thought there was a stop right where the cruise ship docked. We ended up using Uber which took us right to where we wanted to go
Everything was great. Staff very friendly. In the sum better than expected. Good value for money. The only downside is that they run only one circuit so you cannot really make changes to the order you visit the city. The last bus ran at 17:30, later than advertised. That saved our day, thank you.
Decent if you want to do the entire city but only one route so it's not really one where you can go to certain spots. Driver was unfriendly and uninformative.
Excellent! Fantastic way to see the city and get a sense of its history. Great experience, I highly recommend the two day-all- day tour. It allows time to take in highlights and return to those locations you would like to spend more time at. The drivers are courteous, highly skilled and professional. It was great to leave the driving to Big Bus! They know the city’ terrain. Looking forward to other tour with Big Bus. Randolph
I have been on hop on/hope off tours in most of the big cities in the U.S. and Canada and it was always well worth the money. The stops are odd, the recorded narration and music in-between is not well done. San Francisco has so much that can be said about it, having more music (and I use the term lightly because it was the same about 32 bars over and over and over) than narrative is off-putting. We took the night tour and for the first half of the tour, the driver was down-right rude. He warmed up, but............
Ever staff member was helpful and polite except one. Bus Stop 5 at 1030 on June 18 was unprofessional and unhelpful. We missed two buses because he said no empty places available even if 9 people left the bus in front of us. Finally, one helpful driver allowed us to enter even if this guy tried to stop us. Really a bad experience that destroy all the good job by many others.
Absolutely loved it. Best way to see the area and get all the information too. Loved the Chinatown tour and night tour...loved it all!
If I can give this a no star I would. You have to wait over an hour sometimes to get on the bus again. You are better off walking and enjoying the views or take a Lyft.
Terrible?? First of all and I mean all employees think that we know how to use the buses, so there is no communication. Second the buses are not seniors friendly. The stops are far from the sites (except the shopping), making it hard to get too your destination. They did not point out important details of the cities. Which I’m sure there are many details. Some stops should be only drive by, not get off, because once you get off you have to do the whole routes again. I spend more time on the bus then looking at the sites. And all you hear is it’s a big city and a lot of traffic, well I’ve taken buses hop off hop on in NYC , DC, and nothing was worst then this. I enjoy the Golden Gate Bridge but I went to it so many times I hate it. Don’t waste your time fine so other company. Because hop on hop off bus are nice when traveling in big cities
Nowhere does it say that big bus owns this line. We found out the day we went to use our tickets. The stop wasn't where it said. We went to big bus office and they told us to use their stops. Save money and buy your tickets through big bus. The tours, themselves varied, depending on an audio trip or a live person.
We purchased tickets to do the 24hr red route. We got on the bus and the people spend more time heckling other tourists to buy tickets and yelling at them from the bus windows instead of driving it was pathetic. Our driver was Kirk and Frank sold us the tickets. When we finally left, we got off the bus at Fisherman’s wharf walked around and walked down to Ghirardelli Square as the bus had a stop there so figured we would just jump back on as they said there’s a bus every 20-30mins. We got to the stop at 3:20 and waited till 5:00 NO bus. So we ended up walking to the cable cars spending an extra $14 onto of the $80 that the bus tour cost us to get home. We went to talk to them to get our money back as we didn’t get to see anything we wanted to and wasted our entire day. They wouldn’t give us any money back and got totally ripped off. So a heads up STAY far away from this company it’s a joke! We were here on Nov 26/2019.
Kirk, the driver and tour guide was fantastic. He was informative and funny. He slowed down at popular spots to take pictures. I really wanted to see Lombard Street and the Painted Sisters. To see Lombard street from the tour route, you would need binoculars. To see the Painted Sisters, you needed to get off and walk two blocks. I do realize that it is a hop on and hop off tour, however in other cities, you hop off if you want to further explore the specific location, you don’t have to hop off and walk two or three blocks to actually see the attraction. If the brochures highlighted that we couldn’t specifically see those locations while staying on the bus, we would have opted for another vendor. The stop at the Golden Gate Bridge offered sufficient time to take pictures. Overall it did allow us to learn lots of interesting things about the city and would recommend the tour if you realize you do have to hop off to see a lot of the attractions.
Enjoyed the opportunity to see the city when I had limited time so from the bus trip made my choices of when to go easier. Good commentary and enjoyable
Paid for 2 days, however due to the bus schedule change it meant we could only use 1 day. Was noted stopping at places we wanted to visit (China Town) and took long time to go round as no 2 way buses. Feel a little let down as we incurred extra expenses. Have hopped on and off in various cities without this problem.
I think we may have had the same man that has been mentioned by others. Absolutely awful. No meaningful information, just self opinionated rubbish on politics, Americas fabulous military history, and denigrating most other countries. We got off and walked, having sat downstairs for most of the journey so that we did not have to listen to quite so close up. No interesting local information given, by far the worst of it's type that I have been on anywhere in the world, and the first time I have been moved to make a review.. My recommendation would be to give it a wide berth
This was my first hop on tour and it was a great way to see the city. The night tour was a great way to get some incredible photos! Guide was fun and made the tour. One trip (we did 2 days) without and it was just a bus ride. Would definitely recommend this.
Booked a 48 hour ticket, jumped on the bus. Victor the new driver and William the guide. It was dreadful. We spend everywhere, no chance to slow down and take pics, we were nearly taken out by the trees. We didn't see the palace or sausalito, we turned around in a lay by then sped back. The information provided by the guide was terrible we knew he liked fish and chips and where he liked to go dancing ... we commentated on areas of interest when we had already sped past, the tour lasted an hour. Tour 2 Brilliant! 2 1/2 hours in total. after stopping at Union Square, We had both James then Kirk both were amazing, informative, slowed down in areas of interest. We went sausalito, it was fab. I would give 5 stars to these 2 but the buses are in shabby condition.
We had a great time in San Francisco yesterday (08/22/19) sight seeing aboard Hop Off/Hop On (Premium), which should not be confused with the Big B service. Everything was going great until we hopped off at a stop and then on to another bus. The tour guide (he claimed to be from Switzerland or A country near by) was extremely arrogant and belittled people who held opposing views on sex and politics. Each time, after making his inappropriate remarks, he said he was only joking. Many passengers ‘hopped off’ at the next stop. I would not recommend this service to my worst enemy until the owner of this company cleans up its tour guide issues.
Really enjoyed taking the kids on this. Good way to see everything and awesome to be able to stay as long as you want at a spot and then just get back on for another stop. Definitely do the 2 day.
A great way to see the city. The night tour fun. We were able to spend time in several locations, and get back on a bus
The bus has more than 23 stops. You should research places that you like to visit, before you start the tour. I did not have time to visit all the places. You need warm clothes if you like to sit in top part of the bus, specially for night tour and around the Golden gate. Night tour was not during night time.
I would recommend the 2 day tour. We were able to see all the sites, enjoyed a night tour and tour to Sausalito as well. Greg was an especially good guide. His voice was clear & easy to understand by my husband who has hearing aids. Greg had lots of information about the sites.
The Tour was magnificent! The drivers were very helpful and often went above and beyond their line of duty. The guides were very informative and entertaining especially Suzanne and Big Bus Blake. We had a great time and were able to visit all the sites on our list. Thank you from Ontario!! :)
Worth every penny . Informative every time we hopped off we didn’t have to wait to long for the next one
Booked the 2 day hop-on-hop-off tour & first day was great but bus company used by City Sightseeing in San Francisco closed it's business at the end of our day 1 without any warning apparently. Night tour ticket purchased as an extra was not able to be used or our 2nd day ticket. Office advised us at 2pm we could use another bus company which was obviously too late for that day. I have contacted City Sightseeing several times about a refund of our 2nd day but continually no answer. Very disappointed.
We had a marvelous time touring the city. The staff was very courteous and helpful especially since we travel with my mobility challenged mother. The guides were knowledgeable about the history of the various neighborhoods and we came away with a good understanding of San Francisco. We arrived three minutes late for the night tour as the bus left promptly at 6:30. The night manager radioed the bus to return to pick us up so we were able to see San Francisco in all of it's night glory. Bruce and Rich were especially helpful. Thanks guys!
It is a tourist trap because of the location of there selling point in Fisherman Wharf. First of all, It seemed that the guide, Igor, was making an effort to be there, zero enthusiasm when speaking, requesting tips that he did not deserve. The only part of the tour that was really good was Sausalito, because our guide/driver make a good effort to keep us interested and informed about what we were seeing, a very enthusiastic young man. When we took the bus to continue the tour in San Francisco, we felt we were coming back from work on that bus. The driver never spoke, only to announce the stops. We decided to get off and wait for the next bus hopping that there were a guide who explain the tour,. The next bus was supposed to be there in 20 minutes.... we waited for 35 minutes and the bus never showed up. We finally decided to request and uber to continue our tour. It was a disaster. Definitely, I do not recommend this company.
We did the 2-day hop on hop off tour and it was wonderful! We did Sausalito and also the Golden Gate Trolley tour. So beautiful!
We took this tour through our cruise line. Our guide for both days was Beth. Boy does she know her stuff. I am a native Californian and have been to SF many times but I really didn't get a real feel for the history and scope of what is SF until I took this tour. The tour lasted 2 1/2 hours. You would think with the amount of traffic and construction that time frame who be flexible. But they were able to stop along the way for people to hop on and hop off and still get back to the last stop as advertised. I would recommend taking a jacket as the stops near Golden Gate Park and bridge are quite windy and cold compared to the rest of the stops. We were going to get off at Union Square but the construction was so bad decided not to. Another way this tour helped was by seeing everything first to know where to see and go according to local conditions. Definitely a must for first timers or anyone who wants to get a lay of the land. Be sure to ask for Beth...she is great!
We have used this company twice during two separate visits to San Francisco and had two drastically different experiences. When we visited in June of this year, we had a very positive experience with the City Sightseeing buses and we especially loved our experience with Suzanne, she was awesome! On this first trip, we had bought the 48 hour pass, but had to cut the tour short on the second day to catch our flight home. We had planned to do the side tour of the parks and beaches, but after we got on Suzanne’s bus, she was so knowledgeable about the history of the city, we changed our plans and rode her bus the rest of the tour before we had to catch our ride to the airport. We came back to the city this last week with my parents, and because we’d had a good experience in June, recommended to my parents that we should buy the 48 hour passes again. My husband and I have done the hop on hop off tours in several cities and it’s one of our favorite ways to see a city. You get to visit all the main tourist sites without having to pay for a rental car or taxi to get around. And we really enjoy listening to the live guides that these types of tours seem to be known for, you really can learn so much about the city, and each guide has different and unique information from the last guide. Unfortunately our experience this last week with the City Siteseeing buses was drastically different than what we had in June. The first day we rode 5 different buses and never once had a live guide on the main route, but were never told otherwise when we bought our tickets. Our earphones and the jacks didn’t work very well with the audio recording. Because we had skipped the parks and beaches tour in June, we were really looking forward to it this trip. This hour long tour did have a “live” guide who spent the entire ride telling us about his entire life history, including medical history, social history, family life, etc. When we got to the Legion of Honor, he announced that we were there, but since it was 4:00 in the afternoon, said we couldn’t get out, he was only picking up passengers. When I asked what it was, he just repeated that it was the Legion of Honor. My dad informed us that it was a WWI memorial. We drove by beaches, a couple of windmills that seemed interesting, but instead of telling us about the sights on the tour, he pointed out the VA hospital in the distance where he’d had his hip surgeries. It seemed to us that the company had not invested time in training him as a tour guide, which was unfortunate. He was a very nice man who seemed to enjoy talking to the passengers, and if he had been trained better, I’m sure would have been a very interesting guide. Whether it’s true or not, our perception was that this company was only interested in paying drivers to get people around the city, but wanted to save costs/cut corners by having the recorded audio instead of paying a second person to be on the bus as a guide. Every bus we saw from the Big Bus company drive by all had live guides. I’m not sure if the fact that it was mid week or after the summer rush made a difference, but most of the buses we were on were full, so clearly there was still a market. After the first day, we still had sites in the city we wanted to see, but were so frustrated with our experience the day before, we decided to save time and used the city’s public transit system instead to get around the city and never used the hop on/off bus the second day. If there had been live guides, we would have continued using the hop on/off, just to hear what they had to say about the city, but since all we had was an audio recording, we knew we wouldn’t get any new information. After looking more closely at the brochure map, we did see in the fine print that some of the buses had the audio recordings, and if had just been 1 or 2, we would have even been fine with that, but to not have any real guides for an entire day was very disappointing. Since we’ve seen all these sites twice now, we probably won’t do the hop on hop off buses on our next visit to San Francisco, but if we did, I’m sorry to say we would use/recommend a different company.
We have used City Sightseeing in many other cities, but our experience in San Francisco was awful. We chose the 2-day ticket and paid $ 119. I don't think I have been so disappointed ever. They have merged with an other company, and since we didn't get any information about this we were actually waiting for a City Sightseeing bus while several busses from the other company passed by. One of the sales men noticed this and we got a lift to stop number one where the tour started. The driver was talking all the time (felt more like yelling actually), really disturbing when you try to listen to the automatic voice through earplugs. He had a weird sense of humor I think most of the crowd did not understand. Right after stop number one he picked up his lunch/dinner on a restaurant nearby which I think is really unprofessional.
Bought the 2 day pass, better value. Great way to see the layout of city when arrived. Save $$$ on parking, no driving and used the bus to get back and forth from the pier to downtown saving money. Some tour guides were hilarious and others had the audio only. We could use the gray line or city hop on or off busses. Word of advice if cold outside and you ride the top open seats dress warm!
We used the 48 Hop on Hop off bus. Our experience was that most of the bus drivers were either rude (Derrick) or not helpful. The driver for the Sausalito bus was fantastic (Johnny) as was the guide for the Haight Ashbury walking tour (Matt). The stops are not marked, so we were often standing in the wrong place when the bus arrived. (One of the other companies, Big Bus marks their stops.) The website states that you can get on at any stop. Not true. We were told at one point we had to walk to a different stop (even though the bus driver was sitting there). We also had to exit the bus a couple of times and stand in line again to board another bus at the same spot. No explanations.
sooo much informations and sooo well organised!! ..we had the bus stop directly in front of our Motel ;)) a bit cold in the evening and over the bridges - but that's San Francisco :)
The package of the 48 hr hop on hop off includes two walking tours. I went on the golden daze tour, the tour guide Joseph was very entertaining and knowledgeable about various things. From street lamps and fountains to different theories. I enjoyed this tour very much and would recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity.
Peter (tour guide) was great with his own humor injected into many of the sights around the city. Ease of use and very little wait between buses. Great value with the night tour especially considering the parking, traffic and navigating around the city and that's all I'm saying about that! - you'll understand that if you're on Peters' bus...
Great On-Off sightseeing tour. Buses come every 15min. Buses are clean, but wear a windbreaker it is very breezy. good value if you buy on line and use SFMAP for $5 discount
As a hop on hop off city bus tour it was perfectly adequate and a good way to get around. What made it really special was the tour guide. I wish I could remember his name but he was absolutely hilarious with a bit of an alternative Bill Hicks/Doug Stanhope vibe. He was hungover, resentful of his employer and made a few inappropriate jokes which might not have been exactly child friendly but he absolutely made the tour. He was from San Francisco and told you a lot of stories that didn't just make you laugh but made you feel like you got more of an authentic sense of the city's culture and history (a particular highlight was the live chicken on a bus in China town tale).
I can not recommend the walking tours enough. We had an amazing, intimate “Gold Rush Daze” tour with Kyle Green and he absolutely knocked it out of the park with incredible insights into the city’s history. We also had a great time on Joseph’s Summer of Love tour through. Haight Asbury. The bus tours were a little hit or miss depending on the tour and the guide but we cannot recommend Chris enough. She was engaging and kept us on the bus waiting for the next tidbits of information. The night tour was fun and had some great photo ops at Palace of Fine Arts and Treasure Island. The recorded audio tour was not great. Make sure you have a live guide.
I just finished two days hop-on-hop off in San Francisco. I knew about them because I used them in Dublin as well two summers ago. They are awesome! Every tour guide is a character and you learn so much about the history of the city that you wouldn’t otherwise.
Today I jumped off a 16 hour flight and had already had this booked, as I couldn’t book into my hotel. I dropped my luggage and went straight to your tour to be told he couldn’t scan my ticket and to get on the bus and get off at the first stop and they’ll sort it out. Sure buddy, after paying for my ticket prior and just getting off a long haul flight, I really want to create additional stress for myself! Then to get onto the bus with a crude Nd really not very informative tour guide, I’m no prude but one lady lousy complained to him about his comments! Then to get off at the last stop as I wasn’t getting off at the first. To get my ticket properly scanned, I encountered a rude kid who was more interested in his phone and giggling with his co worker than sorting out my issue. He then said, “I’ve had a stressful day” have ya buddy. Let me tell you about mine, but I didn’t bother. Then I had to wait over an hour to get back on a return bus. I’ve paid for tomorrow and will be visiting your office when I’m back down there to request my refund as today was dismal. So NOT waste your money with this company. Thanks for ruining my first day for my first time in San Francisco you unprofessional fools.
Hop-on Hop-off tours is a great way to get around the city as there are lots of hills to climb. Tour guide was great & the tour takes you to all the sites like Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Park, Gold Gate Bridge, Pier 39 & some we didn't know about. With a 2 day pass you also get to explore Sausalito worth the visit. We also got a night tour as part of the 2 Day tour. If your short on time this is the best way to get around.
