An informative and fun tour. Once you’ve dressed up in standard issue overalls you jump on the train and head underground. Just like in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The tour is efficiently run and very informative about the history of salt mining and new/modern methods. Great tour for school aged kids.

Reviews
Tour was interesting and well worth the price. The tour was listed as English and the tour guide on the bus was excellent! The only issue we had was that English speaking guests were given audio guides, but using them inside the mines while automatic messaging and mine tour guides were speaking in another language made it very difficult to follow the information. For example, the introductory 10 minute was only delivered in German. Thank you.
Great experience we really enjoyed the mine train and slides.
We were combined with a tour group going to Eagles nest. We drove to the Documentation Center at Obersalzburg and stayed on the bus as those going to Eagles Best got off we then drove to Berchtesgaden to the Salt mine. The Salt mine visit was fun but after we drove back up (20 min) to pick up the other group. After we all drove back down to the town of Berchtesgaden and had 1 hour to eat or shop. After our salt mine tour we should have been able to stay in Berchtesgaden. The bus could have gone up to get the other group while we enjoyed a longer time in the town. So we spent an extra 40-50 min on the bus
Really good trip, well organised. The mines are interesting, takes about an hour to get round the tour. Time for a beer after before pick up.
The salt mine was not what I expected as the mining done here is water based. That being said, it was interesting and fun. Loved the slides and little train ride. It does give interesting perspective and background into the part salt played in the wealth of Salzburg.
The tour was good. Salt mines were very interesting. Lovely to see the countryside. Our guide seemd to know his stuff but his thick Austrian accent was at times difficult to discern.
The tour was advertised as being conducted in English, but the vast majority of the commentary was in German. As someone who does not speak German, this made it extremely difficult to follow the tour. When English was used, it was generally only for very brief instructions, leaving English-speaking guests with very little understanding of what was happening or what we were being shown. It honestly felt like two separate tours were being conducted on the same bus — one in German and one in English, except the English-speaking group received very little information or guidance. We were dropped off at the salt mine without clear instructions about what we were meant to do or when we needed to return. Later, when we arrived at the village and asked what there was to see or do, we were essentially told to work it out for ourselves. This is not what I expect when paying for a guided tour. The organisation was also very poor. Meeting times were changed repeatedly — 4:45, then 5:00, then 5:15, and eventually 5:10 — which was unnecessarily confusing. I was also uncomfortable with some of Philip’s behaviour and comments. I do not speak German, so I cannot say exactly what was being said in German, but it appeared that jokes were being made at the expense of people on the tour and people outside the group. I also noticed comments and gestures towards young women that I found inappropriate and unprofessional. Overall, this tour did not feel like the English-language tour we booked. The lack of English commentary, clear communication, organisation and guidance significantly affected the experience. Based on our experience, I would not book this tour again.
Extremely disappointing – avoid Phillip This was an extremely disappointing tour, particularly given the price and the way it was advertised. Our guide, Phillip, provided very limited information in English, despite this being advertised as an English-language tour. A significant portion of the tour was conducted in German, leaving English-speaking guests struggling to follow what was being said. What made the experience even worse was Phillip’s behaviour throughout the tour. While speaking German, he was making fun of other people on the tour and making comments at their expense, as well as making inappropriate comments about people outside the tour, including younger women. This was incredibly unprofessional, disrespectful and uncomfortable to witness. He also seemed far more interested in being buddy-buddy with the German-speaking guests than actually engaging with or providing information to the English-speaking members of the group. As a result, we felt completely overlooked for large portions of the tour. The combination of the lack of English commentary, the limited information provided and Phillip’s behaviour made this a very poor experience. If a tour is advertised as being in English, you should reasonably expect the guide to actually prioritise communicating in English and providing an informative experience for the entire group. I would strongly recommend avoiding Phillip if you have the option. There are plenty of better ways to spend your time and money in Salzburg.
I booked this one for my husband, but turns out I loved it too. It's a cross between a science tour and an amusement ride. Love it! One of our favorite things to do in Salzburg.
The bus ride passed through beautiful countryside. Our group was two: eagles nest and salt mines. We dropped off the eagles nest group then went to salt mines. Finished at Berchtesgaden for a very quick lunch!
My husband said I thoroughly enjoyed his. It's always interesting to learn the history of locations and especially anything that helps learn and understand culture. Salt was critical to the existence and development of Salzburg.
Easy to find the pick up point. Coach was very comfortable and on time. Jose the guide was truly awesome and so knowledgeable about the history of the area. He made the trip really personal and we all felt like friends on the coach. Really recommend this tour. Thank you for a very enjoyable day.
Great tour! It was a lot of fun and very interesting. Especially liked the slides. Also like some of the history of the Region that was discussed enroute.
Great saltmine tour with highlights including the slides and boat across the water. Some connection glitches & delays on one of our audiosets, but a lot of information was also communicated in writing and in film. The tour company voucher exchange kiosk building was surrounded by market vendor stalls and was hard to spot, but found it on the corner.
It was interesting, we are glad we did it. Gives you more history about Salzburg and area. Definitely do the slides!
It was very cool and educational. Definitely worth it.
Salt mines were great. Sadly my individual vox box company uses to share mine information in English stopped working at station 2. Advising the tour guide, thinking she would be carrying a spare or two. Abruptly told it is broken and share with someone. Friend did share but very hard to hear vox box info when sharing, when over head speakers in different language was loud. Visually a good tour. Information regarding what I was seeing - still have no idea!
It was quite interesting and fun. Be sure to wear long sleeves. It’s cold down there. The guide should speak softer to the group in German so that we could better hear the information through the audio device in our language.
Dress in good shoes. It’s cold down there so I wished I had worn long sleeves - the jumpsuit helped. There are lickers but try not too bring a big bag - very hard to hold on the tram and slides. The slides are steep but quickly done - 10 seconds
When in Salzburg …. We did three tours with Panorama and they were all very good. Yes, there is some travelling by bus and they will explain other options so be prepared to hear the same information and jokes. The mine is a slick operation moving blocks of visitors along pre planned routes with commentary. Two salt slides, a boat ride and a train. Great experience and nice and cool on a hot day. Limited shop selling ….. salt.
This tour is super fun. Train into the mine is like an amusement ride. Slides were awesome. Under the mountain lake boat very cool. Just super fun. Kids had a blast. Very pretty drive also to Bavaria. Gerhard our guide was excellent.
We loved the entire experience! Be ready for a thrill going down the slides. There’s no fooling around-very organized and keeps moving.
Fun and interesting experience. You ride a train, slide down a slide, and cross an intermountain lake in a boat, it was a well done tour. Bring a sweater or jacket if you get cold easily…inside the mine is approximately 50 degrees
Our guide prepared us well for the Salt Mine tour. He gave a great commentary of the villages and countryside we traveled through.
This was a fun and engaging trip. The mine tour is a well-oiled machine, and the way salt has been mined for ages is really interesting and was critically important to the wealth and prominence of the region. Our bus tour guide, Thomas, was charming and so knowledgeable. Glad we did this!
The Salt Mine Tour was not only fun, but extremely interesting. We got to dress up as miners and ride deep into the mine, we slid down two slides and even used a boat to get across one stretch of water! It was a really unique experience, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone.
Enjoyable experience. More technical than I expected but good information. Pity that we were not allowed to take pictures. Some people might have found it a bit claustrophobic.
Disappointing tour guide experience. He was rude and dismissive whenever we asked questions, with little patience or willingness to help — not what you’d expect from someone whose job is to assist tourists. Communication was also poor; at one point he forgot to tell us what time to be back at the bus, leaving us confused and anxious about missing it. On the plus side, the salt mine itself was a fantastic experience — just let down by the guide José.
Wonderful time they did an excellent job this is definitely an experience that’s worth taking your family on and I would highly recommend it
So glad I booked this excursion—-we had a wonderful time. I was not able to attend this on my previous visit to Salzburg many years ago and now I see why the salt mines tour is so highly rated. Our guide Johannes knew everything about the history of the area and the salt mines. Inside the mines it’s a nice cool escape from the summer heat! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A great trip, would definitely recommend. The tour of the Salt mines was fascinating, with a train ride into the depths of mines and then two fun slide rides to go deeper down to explore the salt deposits, the extraction and the history too! Well balanced in content and timing in the mines themselves, but no time to visit the gift shop afterwards, as we had to be back at our coach to annoyingly go to collect passengers on The Eagle Nest excursion! Watch out also, it was advertised as about 4 hours long, but because we had to drop off the Eagle's nest passengers on route and collect them on the way back, so it was 5 hours (8:45-13:45), which left me with a stressful, 15 minute mad dash back to my hotel to collect my phone charger and grab a sandwich, instead of it being a relaxing hour and a quarter before my next tour!
It’s chilly in the mines but the coveralls help. Considered long sleeves. Getting there was nice in the minivan. Lots of information. Loved spending some time in Berchtesgaden afterwards.
Gary was our bus driver and Johannes was our tour guide and they were FANTABULOUS!!! I did the Skip-The-Line Salt-Mines and Bavarian Mountains Tour from Salzburg and it’s a MUST if you’re looking for a unique experience.
What a fun afternoon. Mirko (guide) and Alex( (bus driver) were the best. Still cannot figure out how Alex got through some of those tight turns and intersections. Extremely safe driver. Mirko was fun and entertaining as well as knowledgeable about the region. Kept us all together and safe. The salt mines were fun, and it kept us out of the rain. Highly recommended tour.
Our driver and guide, Johannas was great. He spoke very good English. His recommendations for lunch was spot on.
The drive was spectacular..scenic! Ran very smoothly. Salt mine was super fun. 10 stars. Lots of explanation and history, time to walk. Jose the tour guide was excellent!
Transportation driver / guide was great. Experience at mine tour was unique and a bit quirky but memorable. Not sure I would do mine tour again. Stop in mountain town wasn’t long enough.
I remembered doing a salt mine tour with my family as a child and wanted to bring my children to this experience on our trip to Europe. The salt mine, itself, with the train and slides were exactly as fun as I remembered it! Our tour guide was good and pointed out some sights as we passed. Overall, there was not a lot of tour content before and after the salt mines, but he added some humorous commentary on the bus and gave us some interesting facts about the Alpine peaks we were seeing. We had a fun time.
The mines were very fun and informative, Berchtesgaden was some nice free time.
This is fun and entertaining! Not only do you ride a train-you also slide down 2 slides and there is a very short boat ride.
We missed the trip. The visor link was incorrect for the location. Provider was fine they tried to give us other options.
This was a one of a kind experience. Really interesting and a great activity when the weather was not so good. Susi was a really informative and fun tour guide.
The train ride is very fun, but don’t go on if you’re claustrophobic. It’s a very narrow tunnel for the first 10 minutes. The information is very interesting and the slides are great. Something even the kids would love.
Salt mine experience was very nice the added value of seeing great scenery, getting a lot of explanations and having a friendly tour guide h was great!
We enjoyed the salt mine tour. The only thing that concerns us about the tour was that there was so many people, and it was difficult to hear the tour guide.
What a fun experience! Our driver, Andreas, was a great guide as we made our way to Berchtesgaden and the mine. He provided informative local colors pointing out sights and sharing information about the area in and around Salzburg. The tour itself was informative and fun. All-in-all, a very fun experience.
Really enjoyed this tour from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden and the salt mines. Susie was our driver and guide and she made the trip so interesting and lots of fun. She tailored it to our needs, pointing out interesting sights along the way, like the Eagle's Nest and lots of sights in Saltzburg which we looked for later. She was so enthusiastic and encouraged us to enjoy the salt mines, even though she didn’t actually come in with us. The mines were extensive and the train, boat and slides were real highlights of travelling through the mine. I would definitely recommend this trip for young and old alike and would recommend booking direct with Panorama Tours. We did 3 trips with them and they were all great and really well organised.
Fun trip for the family! The slide, train and short boat ride were all fun. Learned some history about salt mining too. Our guide Alenka was great! She knew a lot of history and science about the area. Very informative!
Our guide (Andreas) was very knowledgeable on the entire area we traveled. He is very kind and polite with receptive smile. The tour was fun. Slides were a blast and the exhibits were very informative. This tour was recomended to me by a friend.
