Very fun and interesting! Both of our tour guides were great and David was very fun and made the best of a rainy Sound of Music tour.

This is actually two different tours so you finish up with salt mine tour and then back to original meeting point to get on another bus to head out to mountains again. Granted its different area still seems like a lot of driving around. Salt mine was nice experience. Two slides and a cool little train down into mountain. Good information but once you finish you are quickly hustled back on board and off to another stop for a too quick stop for lunch or shopping. Then back on board to the sound of music tour which was cool but seemed so rushed at many of the stops. Singing on board bus was fun. I’d say these need to be individual tours with longer stops at the cute little towns. Guides were great! Drivers are talented on the narrow winding roads.
If you’re like me, you might be considering the salt mines tour as an add-on to the marquee Sound of Music tour. In practice, I found the mine tour much more enjoyable and memorable. Frankly, the Sound of Music tour was rather disappointing. I think they’ve been doing it long enough that they’re really just going through the motions each day at this point. My guide, although animated, didn’t even announce what we were going to see at each stop before we got off the bus. And what we did see was rather limited. Of course, it’s easy to enjoy time in Mondsee Basilica like we did, but you can always drive yourself there. All other stops were either brief looks (the gazebo, Leopoldskron Palace), or, I’m not kidding, drive-bys from afar (Mozarteum Music Academy, Noonberg Abbey). In fact, we drove by the former in both directions so fast and so far away (across a quad) that it was nearly impossible to take a photo with any clarity. We didn’t visit the musical amphitheater or anywhere that might have required admission. It’s as if the tour organizers, despite painting their bus to feature their marquee tour, put hardly any effort into actually securing any kind of meaningful access to the locations, and opted to focus on low-hanging fruit. So, if your sightseeing time is very limited, then go for it. But if you have a day or two to explore on your own, you’ll probably do much better.
Jose and Ferdinand were fun and entertaining on the Sound of Music Tour! Salt mines tour was excellent!! Our guide, my apologies for not recalling her name, was friendly and very knowledgeable about Salzburg. We appreciated the small group tour and her attention to her guests.
I gave this three stars because the salt mine tour was great, but the sound of music tour was not good in my opinion. The salt mine tour was great, very interesting and our tour guide for that tour, Thomas, was wonderful. Thomas was nice, cheerful, very kind and had a great way of being gently humorous while telling us about our trip and keeping us all on track to get to the right places on time. I’d recommend skipping the sound of music tour. It was mostly riding on a bus. We stopped at only a few places ( I think three or four) that were points where the movie had been filmed, and only for a very brief time. Then we rode on the bus to the lakes area near Salzburg, where the scenery was beautiful. We then stopped in a small village to see the church where the wedding was filmed for the movie. I did not think our tour guide, Jose, was very good. He thought he was funny and entertaining, but I found his manner annoying and not funny most of the time. . He seemed to be somewhat jaded about tourists, and seemed very indifferent to the fact that as tourists new to the area, we didn’t know how to get around. At a bathroom stop, he scolded a lady for being a minute or two late back to the bus. Does he not know that there is nearly always a long line at the women’s restrooms and that it is just going to take longer for that reason? When we stopped at the small village to see the church, he took us along a winding route and told us to pay attention to how to get back to the bus. Really? A winding route with many turns, and he expects that we should easily find our own way back to the bus by ourselves in a very short time, in a place where we had never been before. He told us we only had time to visit the church briefly, possibly buy a souvenir at the shop right across the street from the church, and then find our own way back to the bus. Then at the church, he left us. Why didn’t he just tell us that he would wait for us at the souvenir shop or nearby, and then walk with us all together back to the bus?!?!? It would have saved much confusion and hurrying. I would not take a tour with Jose again.
Salt Mines trip was excellent. Guide excellent. Sound of Music tour was excellent. Guide Kylie brilliant. Lots of singing and fun.
We booked the double tour - salt mine and Sound of Music. The salt mine tour surprised us, we both enjoyed it, the mine tour is part museum, part adventure park, part light show. The guide was great. He told some jokes, he intentionally spoke to every person/group on the bus. You could tell he cares about his job. The Sound of Music tour was always the main event of the day for us however, particularly me who has wanted to do it for 45 years. Unfortunately I don't think our guide was into it. He wasn't even wearing leiderhosen with the braces as I saw another guide wearing. The females all had dirndles on. Maybe it was the hot day, maybe he hates his job, but although he said all the lines in the script, waved the goat around and did the actions for do-re-mi, but it really just felt like he was going through the motions. He even stated that he has never watched the movie. Not once. Just some scenes that were obviously required watching to get the job. This disappointed me greatly. He walked incredibly fast away from the bus each time; we're 'fast' walkers, but couldn't keep up. Another patron said to him "gee you walk fast", he replied "I have to" then we stood in silence waiting for the rest of the tour group who were spread out over >100m to reach us. He didn't do anything "wrong", but he certainly did not try to make the tour fun. We spoke to some people in a cooking class last night who said the tour was so much fun and their guide was excellent and funny and engaging. I wish we'd had that guide. A lifetime bucket list activity that will be remembered as a disappointment.
Fabulous day, 2 separate bus tours, same company, extremely well organised to ensure you don't miss anything. Salt Mines 4 hour tour was great fun, you put on overalls, head down the mines on little trains, a couple slippery slides even a short boat ride whilst learning how mining has changed over the years. Then back to Salzburg a very short wait then onto a different bus for Sound of Music tour with Bridget our guide. She is vivacious and knowledgeable as we visit sights even sing songs from the famous movie. This is a must do tour in Salzburg with amazing scenery as well. A very enjoyable day.
Susi was a great tour guide. I was privileged to get to ride in a smaller group with her. She was clear, direct, informative and funny. Would love to take another tour with her in the future. The only bummer at the saltmines is that youre not allowed to take photos inside. You get 2 pics taken of you and/or your tour group for purchase.
The tors and tour guodes were great. However, I was expecting one long tour with an opportunity to have a relaxed lunch between activities. Because it was essentially two separate tours on the same day, there was little to no opportunity to eat and I felt rushed at each stop.
As a life long fan, the sound of music tour is a lot of fun. The guide, Mitch, was funny and full of energy. Def recommend.
Jose and Galinda were our tour guides and they were great! The Sound of Music tour stopped at several places, and we were able to see so many of the places where it was filmed. We also learned more details about the Von Trapp family. We also did the salt mine tour which is a lot to do in a day, but we like to paxl ot in. I'd highly recommend both tours!
We did the salt mines & sound of music tour in one day. It is actually on two coaches, first off to the salt mines with a well informed guide and then an hour in Bertchesgaden, to have some lunch or just wander round. Then back on the coach to the start point, where we boarded another coach for the Sound of music tour. It was good fun, with a bit of a sing song along the way!
This was one of the highlights of our time in Salzburg. Really enjoyed the salt mine. Our tour guide was awesome and I loved shopping in the smaller village. The SOM tour was so fun! Jose was amazing. Fun and knowledgeable! Highly recommended this tour.
Both great tours. Our teens enjoyed them too. Tour guides were very knowledgeable about each location.
We had a wonderful experience!! They switched around our two tours due to weather and everything worked out so well. April and Eric were fabulous. I would highly recommend doing the combo tour.
The salt mines were a pleasant surprise. I had no idea how interesting they were. Though they caught us VIPs, I felt like an outsider because I did not speak German. The real bonus was the historical knowledge of our guide. He was able to show us things about Hitler and the Nazi party that I have never heard before. By itself, that was a tour worth doing. The sound of music tour was fun, but since I don’t know all of the words to the songs, it was not my favorite. Overall, it was a great way to experience Salzburg.
The Sound of Music portion was excellent in that is was informative and entertaining. Our guide was welcoming and made the attempt to know each of us (cannot remember his name but he was originally from Australia). We will always remember him singing songs from the movie as we drove to the places where the movie was filmed. He seemed to enjoy his time with us. We were told to meet the group at 0815 and the tour really started at 0914. The bus driver was skilled. We could not believe how he maneuvered the sharp turns and curves! We appreciated the breaks and opportunities to walk. The Salt Mines portion was a nice roadtrip with good information along the way. The underground tour was led by a miner who was proud of his occupation and the mine itself. The boat ride across the underground lake was beautiful. I was nervous about the slides into the lower levels but they were fun and safe.
Amazing combination but be prepared for a full day. Good 9.5 hours in total. Tour guides are amazing, especially Kylie from Australia (not Minogue!) who lives Maria.
Sound of Music was such fun. It was very informative, inclusive & such fun. Many thanks to Jose & Igor for a great morning. The Salt Mine tour was equally as good & many thanks to Max
This tour was fun with singing in the bus a guide who was truly passionate about his job and giving us insight into all the information about filming. A definite must
If you are looking for something informative and just plain fun, do this tour! Fun little-known info about the movie and its locations combined with SINGING.
We loved everything about this experience. The Sound of Music tour met and exceeded expectations. Jose and Ebil made the experience extraordinary. The Slat Mine experience was great as well. My wife did it as a child and was better than she remembered.
My whole group loved this tour! The salt mines were incredible. My only complaint is that there wasn’t only 2 slides. They were so fun. I wish I could have walked back up to them and done them again. The sound of music tour was engaging and happy. Our tour guide brought to life the lives of the VonTrapp family. I’m sad we didn’t get more time to wonder at each stop. Also, we didn’t catch that Austria is a very cash based system. That would have been good to know before we arrived.
Oliver was a fun and knowledgeable tour guide for our Salt Mines tour which was fun and informative. Simon gave us so much good background on the SOM and we had so much fun!!
Despite the fact that we didn't make any reservations we were so blessed to be able to visit the Salt Mines in Berchtesgaden as well as go on the Sound of Music Tour. Our Tour Guide to Berchtesgaden was Erich and he was excellent. He brought the local History to Life and made it very interesting. We enjoyed visiting the Salt Mines. Upon our return we boarded the next Tour Bus to take us on the Sound of Music Tour. Antonio was our Tour Guide and it was another wonderful and fun experience. Even though my husband left his cellphone on the first bus staff members of Panorama Tours were very helpful in returning the phone the next day. Thank you Panorama Tours for making this such a memorable visit.
I hugely recommend this tour. The tour guide, Kylie was so entertaining and lovely. I enjoyed her guide. The tour with the sound of music fans are so exciting. Even now, I recall the places and sing the songs. Such a lovely moment. Thank you
The salt mine tour was the highlight of both tours. Our guide Leopold was so knowledgeable and funny with his stories. He made the whole trip. If you can request him I suggest you do. The Sound of Music tour on the bus was very nice as well. Bridget was the quintessential Maria with her singing and extensive knowledge of the Von Trapp family.
Great way to see both these great experiences in one day. The sound of Music tour was off the charts good with our guide and singing in the bus.
Salt mine trip was excellent, 1 hr of constant education and experience. Guide was fab, very knowledgeable and adding great humour. Had to share bus with Eagles Nest tour so wasted time going there twice. Disappointed with Sounds of Music tour, Antonio was great and informative but felt there could have been more interactiveness,e.g better sound system & lyrics on screens. The video was good but repeated all that Antonio had briefed. Still a good day and worth doing to see and enjoy the history of the area.
The salt mines is a must see and so if you have kids. It was amazing and kids had a blast. The sound of music was good but if you haven’t seen the movie it wouldn’t be as good. Austria in general is an amazing place
One of the best tours I have ever gone on. Mitch, our guide, made the tour so much fun. Lost of great comparisons to the movie and the real life Marie. I highly recommend.
Connor was an excellent guide. He had the passengers singing Sound of Music songs. On top of that he gave out postcards at the end of the journey. The bus drive was really good as well. I suggest you give both of them a raise!
We did salt mines and sound of music. The salt mines get cold so make sure to wear pants and a good shirt. They provide protective outer wear. Also, with the tour being attached to the Eagles nest. You don’t really have much time in the gift shop. So if possible, look at their shop online before you go so you can see if there are things you want to buy or look at, and have that chance before you are rushed back onto the shuttle bus. The Sound of Music tour as amazing! Well worth it if you are a fan. Learn more of the true history of the Von Trapps. It was so fun to see the sights, take pictures and get some souvenirs.
Outstanding tour, due to our tour guide David and bus driver Haki. From start to finish David held our attention with his knowledge of all things of The Sound of Music. His enthusiasm was infectious he had the whole bus singing and joining in. I have been on many tours over the years but this has to be far the best I have ever been on. It was so much fun from start to finish. David was amazing and nothing a bother to him. If you ever go on this tour make sure David is your guide. 10 out of 10 from my friend and myself. 3 days later we are still talking and smiling about it
We started our day with the Original Sound of music tour, where both our bus driver (Ferdinand) and our tour guide (Bridget) were FANTASTIC! Both of them were so personable, and kept us interested in the history of the movie and the history of the city! They were so fun, and although our tour started early, made the whole experience worth it! Tour provided great views, and great historical significance! We finished the day at a Salt Mine tour with Leo, and while what we signed up for was just a basic tour, what we got was THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER! He was so knowledgeable about the history of Salzburg, the world wars, and even US/British history! We were so lucky to be the only family on his tour, and instead of just letting us roam freely, he took us all around the town and explained everything we saw/everything we tried to eat/drink! He provided us with more knowledge in the few hours we spent with him, than anyone else we have met throughout Europe! I HIGHLY recommend Leo, and I truly think he was the sole reason our Salt mine tour was worth the trip!!! If you are touring the salt mines with Panorama PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do yourself a favor and ask for Leo—You won’t regret it!!!
the Salt Mine was awesome. really worth the money. the Sound of Music was good but we thought it would be more going in and actually seeing the places. it was from afar. the guide Eva wa amazing and gave us a lot of information about the film and the filming. it was Eva who made it good
It is best to know the movie. If you do, then it becomes a very good way to get an overall view of Salzburg and plan other exploring days. It gets very silly with the whole bus singing... We had an excellent tour guide and an excellent driver.
excellent well worth every penny . The mines were very insightful. The sound of music tour very informative and relaxing
A great day! The salt mine tour was AWESOME and then it was great to have lunch and get straight on the next tour. The bus driver to the mines stopped us on the alps so we could get out and play in the snow which was so fun!
A day of two perfect halves! Firstly I want to say thank you to Leopold, our knowledgeable and hugely entertaining guide. It felt like a private tour as there were only 6 of us in total! Leo, or the Old fox 😜, lead us to Berchtesgaden Salt Mine via a superb stop to view Kehlsteinhaus, high above Berchtesgaden. The visit to the Salt mine was both interesting and enjoyable. The visit consisted of a weird train-like ride into the mine, two crazy slides to reach further into the depth of the Alps and a magical boat ride as well as lots of information on the workings of the mine over the past 500 years. We also got to spend an hour in Berchtesgaden which was my husband’s idea of heaven as he has researched lots of the history of this town. We thoroughly enjoyed our morning and would definitely recommend a visit. After a brief pit stop, we then headed on the second part of our day- the Sound of Music tour. The coach was full and the atmosphere was amazing- genuine excitement and love for the Sound of Music. I felt quite emotional as the bus set off and I have to say the tour far exceeded my expectations. Mitch was our guide for this tour and he had a genuine charisma and shared his excellent knowledge with confidence and humour. It was interesting to learn not only of the history of the Sound of Music film but also the real life events of Maria Von Trapp. I loved all the stops- and it was planned to perfection. As we travelled out to the countryside, and with the soundtrack playing in synch, my smile widened and my heart was singing!!! Thank you Mitch and not forgetting Mickey, ( you’re so fine! 😜) for a magical afternoon. The tour is not cheap but it was worth every penny!
The Salt mine was our favorite part of the tour. So fun to go down there and great to see. We also loved the lunch stop. Super cute town with amazing goulash! The sound of music part was okay… I get that there’s a lot we can’t see, but it was a little disappointing where so many of the sites we had to view from across the lake or miles away and we weren’t allowed to go up there. Mondsee was great to see the Church and have some Strudel. We also had some folks on the bus who would not stop talking and it was hard to hear, David (our guide). He was really great in calling them out, but it didn’t totally work on this particular family of 6 behind us…. Our guide, David, and driver, Ferdinand, were both fantastic and really into the experience. They gave it their all which made it more special.
As a huge Sound of Music fan, traveling to Salzburg and seeing the sites where the movie was filmed has been a bucket list item for me. The Original Sound of Music Tour did not disappoint. The credit for this exceptional experience goes to our tour guide (I believe his name was Peter). I loved his humor in his descriptions and especially in his behind the scenes stories. I will never forget his leading us in singing on the bus, especially his acting out of Do, Re, Mi. He was fantastic, and I feel very fortunate he was our guide. In a perfect world, we would have done the Sound of Music tour in the morning while the sun was out, and the Salt Mines tour in the afternoon when it was raining!
Sound of music tour was great guide was funny and informative made the whole tour very interesting and fun great time the salt mine tour war great as well well worth going on this one loved the slide had a great time thanks
We had an excellent guide for our Sound of Music tour which was enjoyable and relaxing. Unfortunately, we had a different guide who drove us in a van to the salt mine. The second guide spent a lot of time spouting his political views and made derogatory comments about immigrants. He was not particularly friendly to all of the tour passengers. The salt mine tour was fun but the trip was not.
The guide elizabeth was super knowledgeable but the ttain ride was a cheap ride. I wouldn’t mind paying more foe a comfortable ride with another train than the train we were booked at
We joined the two half-day tours in early June 2024. The tour at the Salt Mines was interesting, though we got trapped in the elevator for some time at the end of the guided tour :p For the "Original Sound of Music Tour", the tour guide was funny and informative, telling us stories about the making of the movie, leading us to sing the songs of the movie, etc. If you are a fan of the movie, you'll definitely love this tour. If you are not so familiar with the movie, better watch it again before joining the tour :p
The 8:30 meeting place Dachauer Str.4 Germany. Arrived 7 30. Waited, Asked, No phone call. Missed it. Don't buy Trip Adv
If you love the Sound of Music, this is a tour for you. David and Ferdinand gave us a wonderful tour with lots of interesting facts and tid bits about the filming and the real life Von Trapps.
Easy to book. Staff was friendly and guides were mature, from the local area and very knowledgeable.
