Since aviator/Amigo Tours canceled our booking for the Salzburg & Hallstatt tour just 2 days before our booking, we rebooked through our hotel for the tour run by the Hop-on Hop-Off Bus company’s tour to Salzburg. Claudia, our tour guide, was very informative on our drive out and during our walking tour. She conducted her commentary in English and Spanish! It’s a long day: 13 hrs (7:00 am - 8:00 pm). In our free time we took the funicular atop the castle mount for a lunch with a great view. We traveled on a very comfortable, all-electric bus for the 19 participants. Can’t imagine trying to fit in a visit to Hallstatt as well.
We only saw 2 busses running & waited an hour at the departure point. The driver skipped several stops. Stops weren't announced, which would have been helpful given the skips. The audio didn't align with the stops & was mostly music. We paid for the 48 hour tickets & just used them once because we were so disappointed. What a waste.
Exactly does what it says on the tin .
Total disappointment. Having experienced the Hop On Hop Off-type of tour in 3 other Euro cities and seeing actual landmarks, this was basically a drive through neighborhoods with microscopic views. None of the stops held any interest and the audio provided no incentive to explore. The bus was clean and comfortable, air conditioned, the driver was competent navigating the tight turns and narrow streets. Just overall a disappointment. Save your money.
We saw the terrible reviews for the Salzburg hop on hop off bus and I reluctantly decided to book it anyway. I collected the tickets and the young girl gave us the tickets with very little information. I asked her some questions which she briefly answered and we boarded the bus immediately as there was one that had just arrived. We didn’t know what channel English was on and we had an extremely angry German driver who didn’t appear to speak English. When another couple asked him a question he responded in what appeared to be angry terms in German and people on the bus felt very uncomfortable with his attitude. He obviously hates non-German speaking tourists and/or hates his job. The commentary was not always clear what stop number was next and we did not dare ask the driver who appeared aggressive when someone went up to him. He also drove extremely fast throughout and overtook traffic and appeared in a hurry so we only got quick glimpses of the town as we flew through it. We purchased a two day ticket but only did the 1 hour trip from start to finish and then both of us did not want to board again so we walked a lot and did not use our tickets again. Total waste of money and I do not recommend this hop on hop off bus at all.
I have enjoyed many Hop on Hop off bus tours and even though the ratings weren’t that high, my positive experience in the past led me to believe this would be the same. Like others, I was disappointed. The stops didn’t really take you to any of the top sights….. The fortress, the abbey , castle….. we caught most of our sights just by walking.
Very poor hop on off experience. The first 15 minutes it was all music, no information at all! I did not read all the poor reviews until after I pre purchased my tickets or I probably would not have. The poor reviews are earned. Not the unkind people, just the lack of information. So much potential for a better trip if they would take the time to narrate more information
Have had great experiences with HopOnOff bus in the past..We have been on the buses that run til 11pm and later. But this one… No… When we arrived in Salzburg, unfortunately, even the tour info people at train station were rude and could not seem to give directions to the pick up for the HopOnOff bus. Finding the HopOnOff booth was not so bad, but we found the booth after approximately a 1/2 hour walk. And we’re told there was a pick up at the train station. The representative at HopOnOff booth was polite and friendly, but told us the buses ran later and even gave us brochure with times the bus ran. Which were later than 430pm. We hopped on last trip of the day and the representative told us we would have an hour. The bus left at 350pm and stopped at 440 PM which was 40 minutes into our bus ride and we were told to exit. Total waste of money. So travelers make sure you know what you are paying for 24 hours is really not accurate as apparently bus in Salzburg Austria only runs til 4:40. Very disappointed. Hoping to get a refund.
Total waste of money. Information shared on the bus was terrible, barely any. Map on the brochure was no help find the stops and stops not announced. Very disappointed.
What a terrible experience… we paid €79 to sit in a traffic jam for a couple of hours… there was no air conditioning and it was a hot day. The commentary was very limited and just had annoying music in the background most of the time… when we complained to the old guy on Mirabell square… he just said it wasn’t his problem and we should contact someone in Vienna !!…. Really 🤔. Don’t waist your money… you can walk to everything in the old town and if you want to go to the outskirts ride on the local bus for €2.90…..
The guy who was working at the ticket pickup booth was quite rude! The bus is fully enclosed so nothing more than a city bus ride really.
There was no HoHo bus at the designated area. I waited thirty minutes and nothing. There was no office either - just construction where the Viator map said the office is. Very disappointing. Pre-paid in full and no bus. I am not happy. Zero Stars.
We appreciate the chance to use this bus in many different cities we visit. The one we took in Salzburg seemed a bit short (1 hour loop), and there was no top deck as there are in many cities. I understand that the city structure may necessitate this to be the case, but it would have been good to know that. I also thought that the price was a bit high, considering these two items as well. The audio worked great and the bus was clean and comfortable.
We only had 1 line available to us. Compared to other hop on hop off bus tours we’ve done, this one was relatively short/less stops and not masses of information given so not the best value for money. It did however have a second channel in English that you could listen to round the tour regarding The Sound of Music which was a bonus. As Salzburg is quite a small city and the bus services are good, we didn’t need it so much for hopping on and off to visit different sights.
Nice driver who took time to share more details than provided in the earbuds. Hit all the highlights and some of the back country which was lovely.
Because of a street festival, only one bus running and we waited over an hour for it. Some stops unavailable. Don't buy these tickets 5hrough Viator, buy them directly from the company so you can decide if it's worth it.
Had a wet day in Salzburg, in my experiences in Europe these buses are the best idea to do 1stly. Do the complete loop 1st to get the layout of the area then get off where you want to see more. As it was wet on my visit I just did the 1 hour loop and then got back off at Mirabelle platz (same as starting point) then went and had dinner in the town centre before going back to hotel. You got to see most of the sites out the window. Use the ear phones and listen to the history also. Driver has helpful also.
Excellent tour! I loved the city and enjoyed the sights and the commentaries. Loved the background music!
I read the negative review and have to say that was not my experience. The bus hits each stop about every 30 minutes with a 15 minute break between last and first stops. We did the 24 hour pass and did one complete round without getting off to hear the history and learn about the city. Next round we did the hop on hop off option to get off and look around. I definitely recommend if you are unfamiliar with Salzburg and want a quick overview.
They dont run very often...at least not in April. There are not a lot of stops. I think if we had not already taken the Sound of Music Tour we would have used this more.
Prerecorded message that’s not very through. It was not that helpful in giving us a better understanding of the area.
Great way to see the town. Saw a lot of historic sites and places to revisit. The audio guide was very informative.
Unfortunatley this is not a great way to see the city, you are better off on foot everything is close enough. We don't recommend this for the price you pay.
Good way to get around the city and see the sights. During the winter, there are less busses and only the yellow line.
It is the worst Hop on Hop Off bus I have been on. Overpriced and you can barely see the sights and the there are too few stops. We were completely disappointed.
Was only 1 trip available advertised 2, the tours were cut short due to a market of some sort on the bus area. Would not recommend to anyone
We didn’t like the fact that we had to ask to stop. It just seemed like a very unfriendly tour. The recording wasn’t even in sync.
We usually do this tour on the first day in any Coty to get acclimated. Salzburg was no different and was very informative. Did the yellow day one and the blue day two (this driver provided additional information beyond the recorded info very helpful and interesting).
Great way to see the city. Two routes. One goes to wider Salzburg which was really pretty. Most people didn’t hop off on that one as only goes every 2 to 3 hours.
I would not necessarily recommend this tour. It was difficult to find the location for the bus stop and maybe that was on us but once we were on the bus had no air conditioning and if did, it was not working properly. Our group of 4 were so uncomfortable in the bus but stuck with it. If I had known there would not be proper AC, I would have passed. Not worth the money we spend
We booked this before we arrived in Salzburg and after 3 days of sunshine and warm dry weather we were glad we did. It rained all day so this was ' perfect' for us. We'd walked all over Salzburg so chose the Blue line route,it took us through some beautiful countryside and small villages. We didn't get off with it raining ,we just enjoyed the scenery and going higher up the mountain roads. Some beautiful places to get off but not in this weather ( for us at least). The Lady driver was friendly and helpful and did a good job. We went over into Germany which pretty much was the same sights as in Austria, but we enjoyed it. Most people got off at the Salt mines.
Does not have an open top option, so had a hard time seeing many of the sights. Versions of this we’ve done in other cities have been better.
Very informative. We get to experience all must see places and use this info to navigate on our own afterwards.
Awful- No bus came to our stop neither when the tracking told us the bus was passing through stop 6 nor at the scheduled time. We called and they told us that the app was showing that the bus was already several stops ahead, though this was only 5 min after the scheduled time and a long wait. The bus simply didn’t pass through our stop and we were not believed. We requested a refund and the answer was that it’s not possible by phone. They said that only email is the possible route to request one. We’re stuck. Spent a long time in the cold with no bus near the scheduled time.
The bus seats were too high for you to see the opposite side to where you were sitting. A recording of places and no information at stops.
This was lovely - the Danube in Budapest at night is stunning to behold. I have no regrets and the price was good. The narration was very kitschy which distracted somewhat from the experience. And don’t seem to quite run in time with where we were. I would have preferred to be told to look left or look right rather than the Bida side or the Pest side - having been in town for 2 hours I didn’t understand that they were originally two cities and didn’t know which was which. Consequently I missed some things. But I also think the narration was out of sync with where we were.
Enjoyed the highlights of Salzburg and learning about the town's history ,culture and arts. There's a lot to see and do in Salzburg plan your sightseeing tours in advance to make sure you cover what's important to you and make your trip memorable.
Bus’s not often enough. Nice people and beautiful scenery. Took you to the right places and commentary was good.
Tour takes an hour if you don’t get off. Got to see some of the main parts. Sadly only 1 route running and there wasn’t much commentary. Ideal if you want a ride around the city.
This tour is overpriced for what it is. In the winter months the buses only run every 90 minutes. We went to get the 10am bus - the first of the day- and it arrived 10 minutes late. Later in the day it was nearly 20 minutes late getting to Hellbrun palace- no point in having a timetable really. The commentary was a bit sparse in places and really did not tell us much about the city
The tour was very informative. My party did not have time to hop off and explore due to other obligartions. This would have add to the experience. But all in all, it was a nice overview of the area that is rich in tradition. For Americans, it is the site of the Sound of Music. But don't be fooled there is much more in Salzburg.
Not a true 'hop on/hop off at least by American standards. 1 hour long tour circuit that had 8 predefined stops (which the driver did not stop at all of). Could not just ask to hop off when we saw something we wanted to explore. Driver chastised couple who insisted on boarding (they had a ticket) at a spot that the bus was stopped, but was not one of the predefined spots. They did provide earphones to hear some decent information and history of Salzburg. So a cheap, simple city tour, but what I have used hop on/hop off buses for in previous tours.
This is a scam. We would have been better off going to those places by ourselves. The time table says the trip is till 5pm. But they closed at 3pm!
Booked a 48 hour ticket. We didn't get to use it on the first day and when I looked on the 2nd day so we could redeem the voucher, it had disappeared off the app. We therefore paid our money but received nothing in return. Would not use in future 😕
Firstly there are two routes this bus follows. The yellow & blue. On booking there is no information provided to say the blue line is currently not in action. Before we could redeem our 3 day ticket, my diabetes became considerably unstable. To the point I was to unwell to redeem the ticket. I contacted the service provider to try and get a full refund. Due to not cancelling 24 hours prior to the bus ticket validity starting. They are refusing a refund of £84.40. Therefore avoid at all costs, I wonder how many refunds they are refusing & imagine how much money they are making this way.
Terrible waste of money! Bus driver passed by scheduled stops and did not announce stop numbers when we did stop. Passengers were confused about where we were. They did not adhere at all to the posted schedule. Bus driver was talking in German during the recorded English presentations. She did not speak English. Bad experience. I’ve done many other hop-on-hop-off buses but would NOT recommend this company. We rode the yellow line and took the train all the way from Munich for it. Horrible waste!
Unfriendly and inhospitable from the moment we approached the ticket guy. He wouldn’t get up from his chair and was generally rude when we asked if we could purchase tickets for the next bus. The bus offers low budget ear phones and u plug in at the seat and listen to a recording. There was virtually no communication from the driver, until she side swiped another vehicle and told everyone to get off the bus. We were never told anything further, we were just left roadside. Someone said another bus would come get us, but ended up blowing right by. 45 min later she finished with the police and let us back on the bus, but only after we had to ask her what was going on. The rest of the tour wasn’t completed. This tour and the people who work for them are terrible. Avoid this company.
Had the 48-hr trip. Enjoyed the places we visited: Sound of Music places; Mozart's Geburtshaus; Salt Museum; etc. Wish we had more time and energy to have been able to explore the other places.
Booked online Buses are frequent. 2 tours. One of City and one of area around. This included up in the mountains with great views and plenty of sights A great way to explore Salzburg and area around
