Extremely disappointing and misleading. The photos and description make this hotel look like an elegant, charming and distinguished historic property. The reality was completely different: the hotel was worn-out, outdated and felt more like a nursing home than a prestigious hotel. The room I received also did not match the room type I had booked. The photos and description were completely different from what was actually provided. This felt extremely misleading. I was deeply disappointed and left after just one night. I have never before experienced such a huge discrepancy between what was advertised and what I actually received.
Great location just above the town of St Gilgen, very close to a Cable Car terminus, ferry & bus stops East & West. Lovely views from the rear of the hotel across the lake
It is a family-run hotel. I initially booked a single room but was given an extremely small room with no balcony or view, which felt more like a box than a proper room. When I asked if it was possible to move to a room with a view, I was told by the manager I would need to pay extra for an upgrade. I agreed because I didn’t want to spend the night in such a confined space, especially after already paying €126. What made this disappointing was that the hotel appeared to have only three or four guests at the time, so charging extra for the upgrade felt unnecessarily petty. Ironically, the upgraded room was still quite small. (Pic attached) The hotel itself is quite old and dated. The bathroom and décor feel tired, and there is very little soundproofing - I could clearly hear conversations happening at reception from my room. The spa was also underwhelming. One of the rooms was not functional, and the steam room was barely warm. Overall, I feel I significantly overpaid for this stay. In my opinion, this property would be reasonable at around €80 per night, but certainly not the €150 I ended up paying. That said, the staff were very kind. They made the effort to prepare a fresh omelette for breakfast, which was lovely. The reception staff were also very welcoming - especially Judit, who patiently answered all my questions. When I was leaving, they even gave me a small box of chocolates, which was a thoughtful gesture.
We stayed 8 nights at the Hotel Hollweger, Sankt Gilgen, in the Landhaus Das Lisl. We would thoroughly recommend the hotel and Das Lisl. We chose bed and breakfast as we did not want to eat late. The Lisl was very nice: the double room was spacious and comfortable and clean, with a balcony - we could just catch a glimpse of the lake. Our stay was most enjoyable. The hotel is lovely, with big windows and light rooms. The wellness spa was amazing, a big pool and a good choice of saunas, steam room, showers and relaxation room. The staff could not have been nicer or more helpful. We had a friendly welcome from Roland and from Elaine. Ali was always enthusiastic to help with any questions. Tomo, in the bar, had a good sense of humour and served with a smile. Frau Hollweger was simply charming. We had a late flight home and so spent a couple of hours in the hotel, in the afternoon. She kindly provided us with coffee and offered us cake, at no charge. We have stayed in many 4* hotels, in Austria, more than a dozen. The Hotel Hollweger is all round one of the best. Late September is quiet on Lake Wolfgang but we found things to do each day. Public transport was free throughout the region so we made full use of the buses and trams. We found some excellent places for lunch, especially in St Gilgen and Strobl.
