Itinerary

Day
1

Day 1: Arrival in Salvador & First Steps into Pelourinho

Arrive in Salvador and transfer to your boutique hotel in the heart of the Pelourinho, the UNESCO-listed historic center that forms the soul of this extraordinary city. Check in and take time to absorb your surroundings — the pastel-colored colonial facades, the percussion rhythms drifting from open doorways, the warm salt-tinged air rolling in off the Baía de Todos os Santos. As evening approaches, take a gentle orientation walk through the cobbled streets of the historic quarter, pausing at the illuminated baroque churches and lively plazas that come alive after dark. Settle into a candlelit restaurant for your first taste of Bahian cuisine — rich, spiced, and deeply rooted in West African culinary tradition. Tonight sets the tone for everything ahead.

Day
2

Day 2: Afro-Brazilian Heritage & the Soul of Salvador

Begin the morning at the Igreja de São Francisco, whose interior — encrusted with over 800 kilograms of gold leaf — is considered the most dazzling example of baroque excess in all of Brazil. Continue to the Museu Afro-Brasileiro, where artefacts, textiles, and ceremonial objects tell the story of the African diaspora and its profound influence on Brazilian culture, religion, and identity. After lunch at a traditional Bahian restaurant, visit a capoeira school for a live performance and introductory class — this uniquely Brazilian martial art, developed by enslaved Africans as a form of disguised resistance, is as mesmerizing to watch as it is to experience. End the afternoon at the Mercado Modelo, browsing handcrafted instruments, fitas, and local artisan work before a relaxed evening at leisure.

Day
3

Day 3: Candomblé, Bonfim & Bahian Flavors

This morning's excursion takes you to the Igreja do Bonfim, Salvador's most beloved church and the site of the famous Lavagem do Bonfim festival, where devotees wash the church steps in a ritual blending Catholic tradition with Candomblé belief. The colorful fitas — wish ribbons tied to the church railings — are among Brazil's most iconic cultural symbols. In the afternoon, participate in an immersive Bahian cooking class, learning to prepare the region's signature dishes: moqueca, vatapá, and acarajé, each one a living expression of African, indigenous, and Portuguese culinary heritage. For those wishing to deepen their understanding of Candomblé, an evening ceremony visit — arranged with appropriate cultural guidance and community consent — offers a genuinely moving window into one of Brazil's most sacred spiritual traditions.

Day
4

Day 4: Day Trip to Cachoeira & the Recôncavo

Depart Salvador for the Recôncavo Baiano, the fertile hinterland whose sugar plantations shaped the region's history and whose towns preserve some of the most authentic Afro-Brazilian culture anywhere in the country. The destination is Cachoeira, a beautifully preserved colonial town 110 kilometers inland, widely regarded as the spiritual heartland of Candomblé and home to the Irmandade da Boa Morte — the Sisterhood of the Good Death — one of the oldest and most significant Afro-Brazilian religious institutions in existence. Wander cobbled streets past 18th-century churches and workshops producing traditional woodcarvings and cigars. Visit the regional museum before a riverside lunch of simple, honest Bahian cooking. Return to Salvador in the late afternoon with a richer understanding of the forces that shaped this remarkable city.

Day
5

Day 5: Fly to Recife & into Olinda

After breakfast, transfer to Salvador Airport for your short flight north to Recife, capital of Pernambuco and gateway to one of Brazil's most culturally rich regions. Upon arrival, your private guide transfers you directly to Olinda — a UNESCO World Heritage town perched on a hillside above the Atlantic, its streets lined with 16th and 17th-century churches, brightly painted colonial houses, and ateliers where local artists produce some of the most distinctive folk art in the country. Check into your pousada in the historic center and spend the afternoon on a guided walk through the town, learning about the origins of frevo and maracatu — two of Brazil's most electrifying musical and dance traditions, both born in Pernambuco. Dinner at a local restaurant showcasing the bold, spiced flavors of northeastern cuisine.

Day
6

Day 6: Recife's Cultural Layers & Instituto Ricardo Brennand

This morning, cross into Recife for a curated exploration of Recife Antigo — the atmospheric colonial waterfront district built on a series of islands where the city was first settled by the Dutch in the 17th century. Visit the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the first synagogue established in the Americas, and explore the recently revitalized streets and galleries of the historic port area. In the afternoon, visit the Instituto Ricardo Brennand — a privately funded cultural complex widely considered one of the finest museums in South America, housing an extraordinary collection of Flemish masters, Portuguese armor, and Brazilian historical paintings within a purpose-built castle. The grounds alone merit an extended visit. Return to Olinda for a final evening in the historic center, perhaps catching a live performance of traditional northeastern music.

Day
7

Day 7: Craft Traditions & the Living Folk Art of Pernambuco

Pernambuco is the heartland of Brazilian folk art, and today is devoted to exploring that tradition at depth. Begin at the Casa da Cultura, a former prison transformed into a vibrant craft market showcasing the full breadth of regional artisanship — ceramics, woodcarving, leather work, and the distinctive cordel literature, small illustrated pamphlets that have been printed and sold at markets across the northeast for over a century. For those wishing to venture further, an optional excursion to Caruaru — home of the largest open-air market in Latin America and the city most associated with the forró musical tradition — offers an unforgettable immersion in everyday northeastern life. Return to Olinda for a final afternoon at leisure, browsing independent galleries and artist studios before an early dinner ahead of tomorrow's onward journey.

Day
8

Day 8: Fly to Rio & the Bohemian Hills of Santa Teresa

Fly south to Rio de Janeiro, where your private driver transfers you to your hotel in the city. After checking in, spend the afternoon in Santa Teresa — Rio's most culturally layered neighborhood, a hillside enclave of colonial mansions, overgrown gardens, and bohemian studios that has been home to artists, intellectuals, and musicians for generations. Wander the streets at your own pace, stopping into independent galleries and design shops, or take a guided walk with a local artist or historian to understand the neighborhood's evolution from aristocratic retreat to creative hub. Descend to the Selarón Steps — the extraordinary mosaic staircase created over decades by Chilean artist Jorge Selarón as a personal tribute to Brazil — before settling into one of Lapa's celebrated bars for a first caipirinha in Rio.

Day
9

Day 9: Rio's Museums, Memory & Urban Culture

Dedicate today to Rio's remarkable concentration of cultural institutions. Begin at the Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR), where sweeping permanent and temporary exhibitions trace 500 years of the city's history through art, photography, and popular culture. A short walk along the revitalized waterfront leads to the Museum of Tomorrow, Oscar Niemeyer's breathtaking cantilever building housing one of the world's most thought-provoking exhibitions on humanity's future relationship with the planet. Nearby, the Valongo Wharf — a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest disembarkation point for enslaved Africans in the Americas — provides a profound moment of historical reflection. In the evening, make your way to Lapa for live samba at one of the neighborhood's legendary venues, where the music spills out onto the streets and the true heartbeat of Rio becomes impossible to resist.

Day
10

Day 10: Favela Culture, Maracanã & Farewell to Rio

This final day embraces two of Rio's most powerful cultural stories. Begin with a responsible community visit to Vidigal or Santa Marta favela, led by a local guide whose knowledge of the community's history, art, and social fabric transforms what might otherwise be a superficial experience into something genuinely illuminating. Murals, community initiatives, and panoramic views of the city combine to create one of the most memorable mornings of the journey. In the afternoon, visit Maracanã — not merely a football stadium but a cathedral of Brazilian identity, whose history of legendary matches and mass gatherings reflects the passions and contradictions of the country itself. Return to your hotel for a final evening at leisure, with time to reflect on ten days of extraordinary cultural depth before your onward journey.
