A great experience and something I never thought I’d see - not just one but multiple frozen waterfalls! It’s been a while since we went, but our guide was Emma or Emily and she was great too! Very good at keeping the whole group happy and engaged through a semi challenging trail. Highly recommend this!

Itinerary
Korouoma is a 30-kilometres long and up to 130 meters deep canyon fracture valley located 110 kilometres south-east of Rovaniemi. It offers breathtaking scenery all year round, with its cliffs, rapids and waterfalls. This natural reserve is also home to rare species, and a great nature area for hikers. In the wintertime, the waterfalls turn into fantastic ice formations which are well-known for ice-climbing and a great attraction for tourists coming from all around the world. Your guide will come to pick you up from your accommodation in Rovaniemi and will drive you to Korouoma Canyon, where you start your hike to the waterfalls. You will have the chance to observe some of the most spectacular frozen waterfalls in Europe and enjoy the beauty of snowy nature. A typical Finnish campfire snack will also be served around the open fire to keep you warm. This is a great opportunity for your guide to show you his fire-making skills! Snow spikes for the boots are optional but may be useful if you need more confidence when hiking down the canyon to the waterfall. The tour lasts around 7 hours (with approximately 5 kilometers of walking) and you will be back in Rovaniemi around 16.00.

It was a fantastic trip to Korouoma Canyon to see the frozen waterfalls. The guide was great and made the whole experience really enjoyable. The views were absolutely amazing, and the walk through the canyon was beautiful and peaceful. We stopped at a laavu for snacks and a warm drink, which was a really nice break and made the experience even more special. It was such a peaceful experience in nature and one I will definitely remember.
Simple trekking with outstanding views. It can be done alone as it is well maintained and signaled, or by joining group tours.
This is an amazing experience and I feel very grateful that I have been able to see these outstanding views. Its about an hour and 45 minutes to get there, though, our driver Fran was amazing and it didn't feel long at all. Omg, once we got there, we got to walk through woodland and its so beautiful! Divine views! Fran is knowledgeable about the tour and also he is very kind and considerate of all the people in the group. As long as you can walk, I strongly recommend this activity! Yes, its pricey, but worth it. Unless you can get there by yourself then its even more enjoyable! Overall, an unforgettable experience and made great memories with my partner and my son who it 20 years old. He absolutely loved the scenery and the peaceful that woodlands offer. Thank you Fran 😊!
We booked two trips with Wild About Lapland and both were fantastic experiences with great guides. Communication from the company at the time of booking and prior to the trips was good. On both occasions we had a friendly and welcoming greeting from staff at the Wild About Lapland office when we arrived for our trip. The office is cosy and nicely decorated and has a good amount of seating and tea making facilities for guests. Shortly after arriving for our Korouona trip we met our guide Mathilde (apologies if spelt incorrectly) who was friendly, helpful and professional. A good range of outdoor clothing is available to borrow if needed. We already had pretty good cold winter wear but some of our family did swap our snow boots for the Wild About Lapland boots which were warmer and better for hiking than our own. Mathilde drove us and another family to Korouoma in a mini van which was warm and comfortable. A toilet stop was offered at a petrol station /cafe / shop en route. Mathilde warned us that the toilets at Korouoma were basic drop toilets, which didn't faze us, but retrospectively once we had seen the condition others had left the toilets at Korouoma in on the day we visited ( apparently they are not usually this bad) we wished we had taken up this offer, and were very glad to know that we could visit this setting on our way home once we had finished the hike! The day we visited Korouoma was a popular day for trips, but the car park wasn't especially busy when we arrived and although we encountered some other small groups on our walk this did not detract from our experience or enjoyment. The car park was much busier when we returned, so I assume that paths may have been quite a bit busier in the afternoon. We were provided with crampons for our walk, which were effective and definitely helpful for some of the slopes. We (two adults, and two children aged 12 and 14) really enjoyed the walk. Although it was very cold when we set off ( below -20 degrees Celsius) it did warm up during the day (up to -15 I think!) and we were blessed with blue skies. Being in the snowy forest amongst the snow-clad trees draped with lichen was magical, and it wasn't long before we got out first views across the other side of the canyon to the first frozen waterfalls, which were awesome! We then walked down into the canyon and our route took us past the different waterfalls. They were all beautiful and amazing to see. We were lucky to see some ice-climbers on two of the waterfalls, which was interesting to watch. After seeing the last waterfall we headed to an area in the forest with a number of bbq / fire areas. We were all feeling rather chilly (faces, fingers and toes) so enjoyed the opportunity to warm up by the fire. Mathilde cooked us some sausages (vegetarian option available) and these, along with some hot chocolate ( tea also available), helped restore us for the last part of the walk, approximately 25 minutes up the hill to the car park. Mathilde our guide was brilliant at checking all of our group were okay, and meeting the needs of the group. She shared interesting information with us about the area and the waterfalls during our walk, but also had a lot of wider knowledge about Lapland, ice-climbing, outdoor adventures etc and I was really grateful to her for putting up with my flurries of questions. It was great to have this opportunity to see Korouoma Canyon and the spectacular frozen waterfalls during our time in Lapland, and I am delighted with the experience we had with Wild About Lapland and our fab guide Mathilde. NB. This is the first time I have used hand warmers inside my gloves and these were very useful to take and have available to use during this trip, especially for our children.
Had the best time hiking in the awe-inspiring snowy forest of Korouoma with 3 impressive frozen waterfalls. Ania was the best guide, very friendly and ready to accommodate our needs. We enjoyed delicious sausages, marshmallows and chocolate.
Gabor was a fantastic guide ! We learnt a lot about Finland history, culture He was very caring and checking our safety Just perfect !
A company that does not respect the rules of the Korouoma Nature Reserve, despite the many signs clearly forbidding the use of slides. What is the point of hiring a guide if the guide himself does not follow the rules? This sets a very poor example. Your putting at risks your customers and the others using this trail. By engaging in this kind of behavior, you are also damaging the natural environment, comeback in summer to see how you destroyed it... The people shown in these images did not stop only at these slides — they used them throughout the entire route. This is completely unacceptable. The guide is surrounded with red circle, visible WAL jacket
Guide: Jordi was amazing! A well traveled person, smart, and an experienced guide! He was enthusiastic and engaging throughout the entire trip. He shared a lot on the ecology, history and culture. He was also extremely attentive to everyone making sure to engage them and make sure they are enjoying themselves and offering to take pictures for them as well. The hike was amazing, just being surrounded by nature with breathtaking views. There are quite a bit of steep climbs (even though we don’t used any ice spikes) especially returning up its a bit challenging (thanks to Jordi for the shortcuts) but nothing too difficult. Nearer to the end, we had a simple BBQ as planned with hot dogs and some hot beverages.
You will take a ~5-5.5km hike through the snowy forests of Finland. It’s beautiful to see! You should be moderately fit because at the end you will take approx. 1km hike back up the mountain which can be quite difficult/exhausting/demanding but you can do some breaks on the way up. Be aware of that. You can also just go there by yourself but then you will have 1 hour drive in way and have to navigate the forest for yourself which can quite unlucky if you take the wrong path and end up with some kilometres more on the clock.
One of the highlights of our visit to Rovaniemi. We went with a guide who is also a professional photographer, so we got nice family shots with the waterfalls. If all members of your group are fit enough, the longer trail is recommended, but you would need spikes and walk carefully on the slippery portions. Highly recommended.
Hiking through Karouma Canyon was an absolutely magical experience. The entire landscape was covered in snow, and the frozen waterfalls were truly breathtaking. Our guide was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, which really enhanced the experience and made the hike even more enjoyable. Choosing the early time slot meant we had the park almost entirely to ourselves, allowing us to fully appreciate the silence, solitude, and natural beauty of the canyon. It was a fantastic experience and one we would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area.
Even at minus 25 celcius, our guide Gabor kept the beautiful walk safe and full of facts. On the way back to the meeting point he even made a detour so we could see some Northern Lights! Great!
It’s a bit of a drive but well worth it when you get there - stunning scenery along the trek. The pace wasn’t too fast and we are over 60 and were able to do the 5km ok. Bit of a climb out at the end, about 500 metres.
Great wilderness hike with beautiful photo opportunities. Our guide Oscar was very friendly and patient with requests. The walk has a few steep spots with rope railings to help and as other reviews point out the last 30 minutes is a bit more uphill. We are somewhat fit and found it manageable- most of the group didn’t seemed too challenged. If you like walks outside and seeing Finland’s forest and nature scenery this is a great day out.
Amazing day trip managed by Gauda and her colleagues, very interesting with beautiful landscapes even at -15°C! Highly recommend
Booked 6 weeks in advance then my outing was rescheduled. No big deal as I am fully aware things happen. However they tell me to arrive the following day, later in the afternoon. I thought that might be better so I rearranged my schedule accordingly. So I wake up to missed calls because my new trip was still leaving at 9 am not 2 pm like they said. Now I never give bad reviews unless they are well earned and this was. Just to sum up. Booked 6 weeks in advance, traveled 5K miles just to have the ball completely dropped by this outfit. I can't in good conscience give them any kind of positive review. It will be my first and last time using them to book what may have been a once in a lifetime experience. 0/5 all the way. Would not recommend. Find another outfit.
The landscape of Korouoma Canyon is truly breathtaking, and the hike itself was really fun. High praise for our guide Adrian who made it truly a one of a kind experience!
Was amazing. Great guide who was very knowledgeable, and got us to some really cool views of the canyon. Would definitely recommend
Our guide (Jade) was great. We were a group of only 3 so plenty of space in the van and easy to move through the forest.
The hike was a little over 5km, and a good bit of up and down hiking. We were offered snowsuits (which we both used) and boots (which my husband used) I would definitely recommend using their gear unless you have your own amazing gear. Allie was our fantastic guide, she kept us informed along the hike, encouraged us, and made sure everyone was comfortable. It was -30c on our hiking day, but it was still very enjoyable!
This is a must do when you’re visiting Rovaniemi in the winter time. This day tour takes you out to the Korouoma Canyon and its surrounding forest to see its frozen waterfalls and it was everything I was hoping for. We went hiking through a dense snow covered forest, the kind you would typically only see in professional photos and movies if you’re not living in Arctic Circle. The pictures and videos I got to capture of this winter wonderland were amazing and the frozen waterfalls along the canyon were a sight to behold! A big thank you to our guide, Vero for doing a fantastic job guiding us and making sure we were all safe throughout the whole tour! The tour started when we met our guide at the company office in Rovaniemi at 9 am and it ended when she brought us back to the office around 4 pm. The site is about a 2 hour drive southeast of Rovaniemi so the actual time we spent at the Korouoma Canyon Reserve was about 4 hours. This was a fantastic day trip and I definitely recommend you look into doing this when you’re visiting Rovaniemi in the winter time! - Nolan
My friend and I went on a great hike in Korouoma Canyon National Park with our very kind guide Atanas to see the frozen waterfalls up close. He shared his knowledge about nature with us, and managed to find us berries in the snow. In addition to great views and fresh air, we got to learn how to make a fire from birch and enjoyed fire-roasted sausages and marshmallows in good company. Highly recommended.
Our guide Thomas was very friendly and knew a lot about the area and Finnish culture. It was the perfect combination of stunning nature and learning about Lapland. The walk was quite easy with the last part being upwards and a bit harder than the rest. We really liked that we were part of a small group of only 4 people so there was time for pictures without stressing about the rest of the group also wanting to take pictures at the same spot (we booked the late tour at 9, I think the earlier tour had more people). The tour includes some fun slides if you are adventorous, and they will provide you with good gear (boots and snowsuit) and ice spikes if needed.
We were disappointed with this experience mainly because of the guide Anna assigned to our group and her lack of engagement with the group. Anna walked at the front of the group, never taking the opportunity to check in with our family of 6 who were walking behind 2 younger girls. My husband and I are active mid 60yo who were holidaying with our 4 adult children. They were left to check in with us and at times guide us down some very icy tracks. Anna stopped once to help me slide down one of these icy slopes. (she had suggested to the whole group at several of the icy down hill tracks, to slide down them on our bottoms rather than hold the rope). At one stage Anna became involved in a very verbal altercation with an independent tour guide who was suggesting that our group should be wearing spikes given the conditions of the snowfall). This angry verbal display was not a good look for our tour group! Not once did Anna stop and wait for all of us to reach the stopping point so that we could all hear what information she wanted to share with the group. At one time we asked her to repeat her information and although she did, she did not receive the request graciously. One final comment I made to Anna when we all finally returned to the tour van and I would like to make note of it here also, is that the Trip Advisor activity description suggests that this hike is suitable for 0-99yo. We all felt the age range is highly inaccurate when you are expected to walk or slide down icy tracks, you may be walking in good falls of powdery snow and that the last 800m of the hike is up a very steep gradient that the young, and definitely the active seniors, found very challenging. Anna estimated that the distance we had walked was about 7km.
Good company , I liked that they were very responsive and well organized. Our guide Ali was very nice and helped us have a wonderful experience. Recommend !!!
The canyon experience is a long drive from the city centre but Emily, our guide, was very professional, caring and made sure we were all safe. Cannot fault this experience. For us in our 60’s found it challenging but well worth it! The scenery is breathtaking and cold! Amazing experience and would highly recommend it!
It was magical, trekking through the beautiful environment & seeing the magnificent waterfalls. It was mostly an easy walk, however the last 30mins is uphill, which I walked at my own speed tolerance and it was fine. Tim was a great guide, was very helpful and tolerant & provided a fantastic experience. Highly recommend.
This was certainly one of the highlights of our holiday. It is wonderfully serene and beautiful, and a great walk with some nice slides for the children (and young at heart). I'd recommend it to anyone who likes the outdoors, it's absolutely worth it. Our guide, Alli, was very nice and friendly, we really appreciated her guidance.
We loved our tour! Ana our guide was full of knowledge and made it fun and enjoyable, she made the incredible experience even better. Flexible pick up, warm overalls provided for the walk, lots of photo opportunities through out the hike and a yummy lunch snack with hot chocolate before the end of the hike. A quick stop off on the way home for snacks and a toilet break, and great conversation on the ride home, we loved the day!
Arrived in the morning and the tour departed on time. Guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about the falls and the trail. She did a great job and made sure to get the firewood and supplies together for the fire and we had a great time.
Location (national park) was absolutely stunning, such a winter fairytale. Tour was organised great, the guide's communication was also great re how long to get there, where we're going, what trail we're taking etc. Tour was great and guide was good in the end but some first impressions were not so great. Our guide (and few others seen in their office) seemed either angry or not in the mood, naturally might not be happy to work on Christmas day. Some initial questions we had were answered with cheeky remarks (for example when asked should we expect wet conditions during the hike, the answer was "it's as wet as always" with an inpatient grin, as if we - the tourists- know what "as always" means). There were few other remarks also. One other guy we've seen in the office snapped at a woman who wanted to use the bathroom and told her "well you should have joined the Q earlier because now we need to go and no time for the toilet anymore". Our guide was also constantly playing heavy metal or rock in the van, which might not have been everyone's cup of tea, never mind Christmas day or not. First impressions aside, he guy was professional, knowledgeable, polite, which was good. Could have been better taking into consideration what they are charging and also the fact that this could have been a DIY trip if car is rented.
The whole team was super friendly and made sure we were comfortable and ready for the day. The premises were well equipped and overalls and boots were very clean and kept us warm. Our tour leader Ana was amazing and she made sure to give us valuable info. Everything was super organized and the highlight was the fire and the sausage lunch, and the finish was very sweet with melted chocolate on bread! Amazing from start to finish, thank you Ana, we will never forget you!
This was a beautiful hike! I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering a nature experience. This is a different experience from what most people book while in Rovaniemi but it should be a main attraction! The frozen landscape was breathtaking. Our guide Anna was really warm, friendly and attentive to our needs. She made this hike a really nice experience and my entire family of 8 thoroughly enjoyed ourselves because of her. Thank you so much Anna!
Was an amazing experience, coming from Australia we have absolutely nothing that compares to this. Simply amazing
Tomas was great! He helped everyone on the sometimes tricky terrain and smiled all the way. It’s clear that he loves what he does. He also shared many interesting facts with us but the highlight was watching him patiently teaching a little boy how to use a flint to light the fire.
Signed up for the Korouoma tour on 2 Dec 2024. Was not informed beforehand that the path leading to the waterfall would be icy and slippery. Reached the destination and was given 1 crampon to place on my foot. Not a pair but 1 crampon for my right foot only. Tour guide informed me it is ok to proceed with only 1 crampon. The crampon provided is not adequate for icy condition. Fell down because the path was too slippery to navigate with 1 crampon. Tour guide did NOT inform me I can rent crampons at the site. I ended up not completing the tour as I felt it was too dangerous and I was not going to risk my life or a limb for a waterfall. Would not recommend because obviously the company does not have the proper equipment for such condition and have zero regard for safety.
A bad experience! This trip was on a day (2 Dec) when the conditions were quite icy and it should have been called off in the morning by the Wild About Lapland company who organised the activity. The guide helped us all as much as possible, but there was clearly a lack of basic equipment for the icy conditions that existed on the day. The spike attachment had spike not even of 1cm. With a group of 5 people, there was not enough spikes and the pair of spike attachment I had was missing some spikes. We had many falls due to the slippery icy conditions. Further, there was guidance on the day that conditions were dangerous, yet the activity was conducted without considering the safety of the people. Terrible experience and clearly a case of money over safety!
Thx to the very experienced and professional leader Henna, she made the whole trip enjoyable and full of joy. She also took care of everyone as well as explained all she knew about Korouma, made us an unforgettable trip this time! Definitely recommended this trip to my friends and all who interested in hiking 😉
Maca was a great host! Honestly I did realize this was a hike LOL but it was a lot of fun! The waterfalls were nice but the snowy scenery was the icing on the cake. Just beautiful.
We had a great day trip to the beautifull Korouoma Canyon Frozen Waterfalls. Vince our guide was very passionate and knowledgeable. He chopped wood for us, showed us how to make a fire using bark and a flint. He then supplied some sausage which cooked on the fire, while having some hot chocolate. Thank you guys for a memorable day, which we will never forget.
Our tour guide Emily was great but the experience started off on a terrible foot. Picked to select pick up later, which I did days in advance. They never got it and lost an hr of experience. Apparently it set as their office location, which would have been fine if listed and we had known. Then were told the experience would be shorted due to weather. Wish all these things would have been clearly listed and advertised. I understand the weather cannot be controlled but there was so much ice it was even difficult to do at all.
Awful company to deal with, a little more consideration for customers situations and a focus on providing a service instead of taking money will go a long way for these guys! We booked a trip mistakenly on the correct date and time however wrong month. I didn’t realise until the date of the supposed trip, I tried explaining the situation and asking to reschedule to our intended date a month later. But explanations fell on cold ears. They were unwilling to reschedule and said we must book again and essentially pay for 2 trips (but only get the service they provide from 1) based on the website booking system there is green availability so it is not like the tour was full on the day it just seems to be a refusal to help. I understand this is a booking error on me but the refusal to help solve this is just disappointing.
This was amazing hiking, we really enjoyed the time we had with friends and tour guide we met on that day
Korouoma canyon Park is a very nice place where to spend half/full day hiking surrounded by nature, forest and waterfalls. It’s a public national park. It’s a little bit far from Rovaniemi, the transfer takes 1,5 hour x 100km more or less. The organization provides boots and winter overalls if you need. The thing my friends and I didn’t appreciate is the fact that the experience is quite expensive for what offers itself. I mean that included in the price we expected to have a lunch around the fire as written, but in reality we just received 1 sausage, 1 small bread and 1 biscuit. Water just once for all the duration of the excursion until 4p.m. We were with teenager sons very hungry, considering we were out since 8.30 in the morning, and after a 5 km tour. Luckly we took with us snacks to be able to have something more to eat. Ok simple meal and adventure spirit, but i think you can improve the experience with you to be a real added value. It’s true we are people used to do trekking and to ski, but this wants to be an advice. The day after, just taking a taxi, we had 10km tour in the arctic polar area by ourselves just having sandwiches with us for lunch and it was super.
This tour is the complete package! First, our guide was very knowledgeable and gave us a lot of insight of the history of the forest and the waterfalls. He took pictures of us in all the best spots of the park and was always on the lookout of what we need it. As a bonus, during all our hike we had snow showers and that made the experience even more magical. Very fun tour and educational!
Janik and I spent two fantastic days with our guide Teemu and his wife Irma, the owner of the café at the entrance. It was built into a nice package that fulfilled all kinds of wishes we could imagine: - Hike (day 1) and snow-shoeing tour (day 2) with Teemu as a guide, explaining everything about the nature and history of the canyon and beyond. We enjoyed the landscape, it’s silence and learned a lot about it. We got so much more out of these days. It was pure joy. - The overnight stay in your kota was the best night of the one-week trip we had. Teemu took care of us to ensure that we were well fed (ok, with the help of his wife Irma), could enjoy the tent-sauna and had our privacy down in the canyon. It was unforgettable. - The food was simply gorgeous. Irma loves cooking traditional dishes based on the best local ingredients. One can’t eat better in any 5-star restaurant. The saying “the way to the heart is through the stomach” becomes true especially as it is combined with two very warm-hearted people! Thanks for letting us have this experience.
This hike was incredible. We were lucky with fresh snow but even luckier to have the most fantastic guide, Guille. Guille was so enthusiastic, very knowledgeable about the geology, the flora and fauna and demonstrated how to prepare and light a fire using bark and a flint - which we then used to cook our sausages. One member of our group, who had asthma and a dodgy knee, found the climb out of the canyon rather difficult and wished the notes had suggested bringing poles.
This was an amazing experience. We loved being out in nature, it was well organised, well guided and the frozen waterfalls is an absolute must to see.
Great trip, very well organised and on time. We did the hike in the beautiful nature park, took some beautiful pictures, and had a great bonfire with sausages (vegan included). Would recommend!
