About Activity
Your Indigenous evening experience begins with private transfers from your Rotorua Hotel. Almost two centuries ago, the tradition of extending a warm welcome to manuhiri (visitors) began when the people of Te Whakarewarewa opened their geothermal wonderland to the first guests of New Zealand. This time-honored legacy endures to this day as you are greeted by the descendants of those original hosts. You will be guided through the greenstone, woodcarving and flax weaving schools at the New Zealand Maori Arts & Crafts Institute. After your tour, Indulge in Te Puia's world-renowned hangi buffet dinner, served in the inviting Pataka Kai Restaurant, Bar, & Cafe. The cultural performance is set against the backdrop of the beautifully carved meeting house, Te Arounui a Rua. The captivating performance includes a traditional pohiri (welcome ceremony), waiata (songs), moteatea (traditional chats), poi dances, and haka. The evening culminates with the enjoyment of hot chocolate and steamed pudding amidst the mystical ambiance of steam and geyser terrace, illuminated by a mesmerizing display of colored lights.
