Definitely recommended. Super friendly atmosphere. Great walk after the mud bath. Unique experience and even after a shower or two I can still smell the sulphur on my arm and that’s making me smile.

The mud bath was a great experience Our skin feels amazing afterwards We loved trying out all the pools after the mud bath Definitely worth going
The mud pool and thermal spa were great after a long day of a walking tour. Our skin felt rejuvenated and was glowing after.
The geothermal walk was amazing to see, we’ve not seen anything like this before. The mud-baths afterwards were also a new experience and were well run by friendly staff. You didn’t feel rushed through and the facilities to change in were clean and spacious.
We did the mud baths. Relaxing, soothing, warm, didn’t want to get out of the warm spa pools after the mud bath. This is a truly privileged space to visit and enjoy, among the volcanic space millions of years in the making. Staff were so friendly and willing to answer any questions we had. If you think you’ll struggle with the smell of the sulphur just “get over it” my sis gagged in the first min of arriving then we just didn’t smell it. We hired towels and took our own cheap swimmers and binned them after. Just go do it if you can. We were there for 2 hours.
Fun experience with the family, just a little expensive for the length of the activity. But definitely worth it!
Nice experience to do ! Staff were pretty cool. Many thanks to them !
Thoroughly enjoyed the unique mud spa experience. Very impressed with all the hosting staff, their guidance and pleasant attentiveness made the experience incredibly enjoyable. I highly reccomend Hells Gate Mud and Spa
We enjoyed the guided geothermal reserve tour and mud bath and spas. Our tour guide, AJ was absolutely wonderful, engaging, knowledgeable and funny!
Such a relaxing afternoon smearing mud all over ourselves!
You go in and check in for the mud bath, no more than 20minutes, cake urself in mud and relax.then you go into Sulphur pool after showering to get the mud off. For myself I got really burning eyes in the Sulphur pool but I have really sensitive eyes. My husband didn't get any issues.
In the package that we had, we had probably an hour to an hour and a half very gentle walk around the geothermal sites. Our guides were exceedingly knowledgeable and educated us well on both plant and thermal information as well as Māori culture. We felt we learned more about Maori culture here than at the more formal Māori village site.
Mud pools are a special experience. The thermal walk is interesting but quite small in length, a little overpriced.
That was a rainy day and it was quite cold, I already booked but do not take a mud bath, when I was at reception desk and waited for free shuttle bus, the staff know the situation and offered a full refund ^^ WOW. Exceptional services!!! Plus, the signature drink with honey in rainy day make your day warmer in rainy day. Cheers.
Outstanding work by Liam. Great guide giving a fantastic insight into geothermals and Māori culture. Such a an amazing place. Go with a guide and you will be rewarded.
Awesome trip, nice persons, highly recommended
Mud mud mud, what's not to enjoy !! Every time we visit Rotorua we do this experience. I would think there's nothing like it worldwide. Fantastic team at the front and looking after you also. Leaves your skin feeling fantastic for days afterwards also.
Very relaxing experience for the whole family. The staff were very kind and welcoming, Will definitely go again next time we’re back in NZ.
It was a real shame as I did call up a week ago and got told by the manager that I would get a call back at the end of the day Monday 4th August. I gracefully waited as I am fully aware a managers position can get really busy. But a full week and with my contact details given and read back to me , I have had radio silence, I believe this to be rude. I had an unfortunate situation where me being a local and not the most tech savvy person, I booked and paid in US dollar's ( I am a Rotorua resident) and I had organised a Mystery team building for my employees from Auckland to travel down to be experiencing some activities. The booking gave me a 1 hour slot and I had planned other activities around this. They had another Mystery envelope in the van awaiting. They were never given this 1 hour instruction and continued in the pools and completley missing the mud pool experience. I frantically was calling as the other activities were behind in time. My conversation with the Manager heard me taking ownership for my failure and that I had paid double for this experience for the team. But the booking stated 1hour only with a 20mins slot for the mud experience inc. They never got this and were rushed out of the pools for there next experience. I am saddened that the person that checked them in that late afternoon picked this up upon guests arrival for my booking status but this was never relayed to me, only to my employees who were none the wiser. To add to this I did call to inform Hellsgate staff that the employees were on their way. Please remember in these times your customers are important and that a call back or a txt message goes a long way!
We had a great experience with shells gate today. We went to do the mud bath and spa, I accidentally booked for the wrong day which staff easily resolved for us. We were offered a discounted rate to do the geothermal walk which we hadn’t planned on doing and really enjoyed it. AJ was a great guide, he had lots of interesting information and made us all feel welcome, entertaining us with his jokes. It was worthwhile doing the walk to learn more about the area before hopping in the mud bath. We went with our 2 children which enjoyed it but I think I’d prefer to go without them next time to make the most of the relaxing experience. We probably spent about 90mins there.
Time well spent with 20 minutes in the mud bath and then as long as we wanted in the hot spring spas. We spent about 2 hours there. Beautiful surroundings.
Amazing experience, we had 20mins in our own mud pool then aslong as we wanted in the sulphur pools. Well organised, staff were fantastic
My partner and I had a nice time soaking in the mud bath and then spending time in the hot pools overlooking the geothermal landscape. We got a small mud bath to ourselves and were able to thoroughly enjoy the experience in the allotted 20 minutes (which feels a lot longer when you are relaxing in the pool). The hot pools were a very comfortable temperature and a nice place to spend the rest of our time at the spa. Thank you for a wonderful experience!
My partner and I had a really good time just soaking in the mud bath and spas. This was the first time of either of us to be in a mud bath and we both really enjoyed our time. The staff was really friendly and made sure we were well looked after at all times. Highly recommend for anyone that likes to relax after a long day of exploring Rotorua or just want to have a nice relaxing day.
Such helpful and friendly staff made the experience so easy to navigate and show us to enjoy ourselves. It felt so much longer than we expected - we thought the 20 minute limit wouldn't feel long enough, but bathing in the warm mud for any longer would be too much. Lathering ourselves with the mud was a strange but relaxing sensation and then relaxing in the other spa after rising off was lovely.
This was a must do in Rotorua for me. The tour and the mud baths were excellent. I would recommend hiring swimmers as it is almost impossible to get the smell out. But having said that it was well worth it.
Expierence was great but as a New Zealander booking on trip advisor it was not clear price was USD until after payment was made. Paid double what we though we were paying.
Hell’s Gate was absolutely incredible! My son and I had the best time exploring this amazing place. From the geothermal wonders to the mud baths, every part of the experience was unforgettable. We loved every minute of it and will definitely be back. If you’re ever in Rotorua, it’s a must-do. Thanks for an awesome day & amazing staff, we can’t wait to return! ❤️♨️🇳🇿
So much going on here, volcanology botany, Maori culture and history. The carving was an awesome interactive experience. Top it all off with a trip to the spa. The irony that it's called Hell's Gate I was in heaven.
Hell's Gate was one of the most unique experiences of our trip to New Zealand! The geothermal landscape is absolutely incredible, with bubbling mud pools, steaming cliffs, and vibrant geothermal features unlike anything we've seen before. The self-guided walk was easy to follow and provided plenty of opportunities to learn about the area's geothermal activity and its cultural significance. The views throughout the reserve were spectacular, and there were lots of great photo opportunities along the way. The highlight for us was the mud bath and sulphur spa experience. It was relaxing, fun, and left our skin feeling amazing afterward. The facilities were clean, well maintained, and the staff were welcoming and helpful throughout our visit. What makes Hell's Gate especially memorable is the combination of natural geothermal wonders and Māori history and culture. It felt like much more than just a sightseeing stop, it was an experience that gave us a deeper appreciation for the region. We would highly recommend Hell's Gate to anyone visiting Rotorua. It's a truly unique attraction that offers a perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and cultural connection. A must-visit while in the area
Good experience! First time trying the mud bath. Would recommend
We just did the walk , didn’t fancy playing in the mud . I would suggest that if you only wanted to do the walk , make sure you do it with a guide, otherwise just do the free ones in the township of Rotorua. We really enjoyed our wood carving with the lovely young man who was helping us .
It was a good experience however we were told that someone would be available to take some photos of us and they were not so we got no photos of us in the mud baths
Great experience. We still smell like sulphur!!! 🤣🤣🤣
This is a must do!✔️ a big check off my to-do list. This place feels like your on another planet, amazing experience to see nature doing her thing and hearing the traditional history by the guides Very much enjoyed the mud pools. Note to self; take old swimwear that you won’t take home, the sulphur smell won’t wash. I ended up leaving brand new togs 🩱 behind rather than smell 👃 out my entire suit case. But done let that put you off Great day for us
The mud spa was a really novel and fun experience—something quite different! The staff were great and made everything easy, and the facilities were clean and well set up. A top tip: definitely hire towels and swimmers, as the smell is quite strong and tends to linger. Overall, a unique and enjoyable experience.
We had a really good time. We were alone in the mud spa so it was really funny. The sulphur spa is just in front of the geothermal park so that’s really beautiful. The staff is really nice !! Thank you very much. Just be careful if you have a sensitive skin (atopic) you could have some reactions.
This experience was amazing, it was pouring rain the whole time, imagine if it was a nice day.
My daughter and I loved the experience. Would definitely do it next time in NZ
Efficient check in, staff gave detailed instructions. Mud bath was fine, loved the hot pools. Showers were nice and warm
Left my jacket there. Needed. Wanted to charge me $40 for a $30 jacket to send it home to me. Complete extortion. Also I would advise not going in the sulfur pits as you will never get that smell out of your clothes. Unprofessional staff
This was such a cool experience!!! Would absolutely recommend and do it again! The Mud Bath was a whole new experience - (My only recommendation would be that they have more closed door change rooms as some people like privacy when changing). Unfortunately the park had some bad rains so we weren't able to see all of the park but what we did see was just amazing!!! The staff were very friendly too! Thanks Team!!
Amazing experience! I have chronic pain and after doing tongariro a few days before this was exactly what i needed. So much is provided and staff are kind. Make sure you have access to a washing machine after though or you will have sulfur smell on your clothes!
Such a special experience. Staff were really helpful and informative. We went at 10am mid week and we had the pools almost to ourselves. Perfect
Great place to experience mud and thermal pools - safety of guests were obviously paramount. All the staff were very friendly and helpful especially the lovely lady in the cafe
Not since childhood have we enjoyed smearing ourselves with mud and doing so in a hot tub heated by volcanoes. Yes our skin did come out smoother and cleaner. We chose the waterfall after showering to cool off and chill out. Very well managed.
Absolutely recommend 👌 So relaxing and the staff were incredibly hospitable
Travelling in a group of friends from Australia and we absolutely loved the experience of Hells Gate mud bath, sulphur spa and cold plunge pool. Definitely would recommend this experience for all ages.
More time in the mud would make it better thsts what you ho gor plenty of hot pool options available in rotorua we went for the mud Even if they need yo monitor the time in the mud pools gor health and safety you dhoild be allowed back in after a time lapse
I definitely expected a bit more from the pictures. You go in to the mud pool which is the size of a hot tube and after 20 min you wash off and you can sit in the other warm water or cold water pools.
