The gathering place in Rotorua is lovely - calm and friendly. The transfer was smooth with an informative introduction from ‘Michael’. The different experiences to try and watch were entertaining and interesting. The family introduction by the chief was lovely and all of the participants were so talented in their presentation of dance, song and music. Perfect end to the evening with some traditional Māori cuisine and further entertainment. Thank you - we will remember you all and tell our friends and family. Kia Ora

Loved it! The setting in amongst the tall trees was beautiful and atmospheric, the little fires burning to keep us warm, the canapés and of course the wonderful whanau, so talented, warm and welcoming. The dinner was absolutely delicious and while we found the communal dining layout a bit intimidating at first, we ended up meeting some great people from around the world. A thoroughly memorable experience.
This was amazing! Culture respectfully presented by knowledgeable guides. The musical talent in this family was impressive. We enjoyed the entire evening.
The best cultural experience where we have ever been in and we have been in many before. The program was amazing, we learned a lot of the culture and we could try to learn Maori tradicional things. And the food was really good. We loved their singing, they voiced where so wonderful. The experience was really worth going and we were not the only ones who said so on a way back to Rotorua
An experience to remember! From the powerful performances to the incredible food, every moment was immersive and deeply respectful. If you visit Rotorua, this is a must-do.
We really enjoyed this experience. The Māori dancing and singing was excellent. Very informative and entertaining! The dinner was delicious, we were stuffed.
Oh it was wonderful. We were only a small group so it felt more intimate. I learnt so much.
Do this!!! The best experience ever! A great cultural experience, excellent food and a really great family. An immersive event that’s fun, full of information and truly top shelf. Best money I’ve spent in a long time. If I could give it more stars, I would!
Absolutely amazing. We truly appreciated the gift of their family stories and the commitment to culture. We felt truly honored to be a witness to their song, traditions and amazing food. Every person to the region should come!! Very interactive and no person would walk away hungry!
This is a MUST DO when visiting this area. From the luxury transportation to and from the site, to the welcoming ceremony and hands on learning activities, to the show and dinner, this did not disappoint. Hosts were friendly and gave their all to show us their culture and share stories, songs, and dances. They are all family members, and so talented and entertaining! Brought me to tears, it was so beautiful! The grounds (on ancestral lands) and facilities (culturally oriented) were amazing. The seated dinner after the show was a total feast with a lot of variation in food items and a very attentive wait staff. This was a most memorable experience! Put Te Pa Tu on your list!
Exceeded expectations on all levels. Friendly literally from the confirmation phone call to the very end. Every step of the evening was seamless. The family running the night were informative, friendly, caring, funny, knowledgeable & love their culture & sharing it. I smiled from start to finish. It was really interactive & oh my goodness ..... the FOOD!!!! the chef was 5 star .... up with the best meal I've had!
This experience was fun, energetic and interesting. All attendees were involved. Fabulous singing and their voices were amazing. The food and service were fantastic.
This was the highlight of my trips in the North Island ! The whole experience was informative and entertaining. i was particularly impressed by the passion and enthusiasm of the Maori hosts. The nibbles and main feast was very good and I would highly recommend this event to any tourist visiting Rotorua.
Remarkable! Great introduction to the culture. The warriors/singers/dancers were amazing!!!! Got to go!
Overall, the experience was fabulous. I just want to take a moment to provide input on having young kids (5 and 7) there as I wish I had known a couple things. None of us changes our overall appreciation for the event, but knowing could have helped us plan better: 1) The 5pm slot was canceled for low enrollment so we were rolled to the 6:15pm slot. This was later than desired for the kids and, frankly, I’m still a little annoyed. Some sort of recognition or refund for the downgrade of family experience would have been nice. But we did get seated with another family who also were pushed from the 5pm time slot and our kids had fun, though we all had the same minor gripes about the late schedule. 2) there’s no kids food offered. The meal was very tasty for an adult palate but challenging for my 5 year old who only ate bread. Bring snacks, maybe feed your kids first. 3) The tour starts with hands on activities then the cultural show and then the food. Being pushed to the later show meant kids not eating until 7:30ish. Eat first (especially if pushed to the later show) and bring snacks. They offer small bites during the activities but they weren’t very child friendly (think sea urchin) so snacks are key. Overall, my kids did great and they were fascinated with the cultural performances and tried the Māori games and haka. So I wouldn’t change the fact we brought them. But I would have been better prepared for the food and timing situation if I had had a real sense of it!
Very informative and fun experience learning about the Māori culture. The family is incredible- like seriously, how are they all so talented and funny? I swear every person that performed was such a good singer- they put on a really good show. Also, the food was amazing!
Don't miss it; a wonderful experience that gave us a very informed view of the Māori culture and history. The staff made us very welcome ad always available to answer questions.
This was so fun, the Maori were very warm and friendly. We love learning about new cultures, so this was great. The food was excellent. It is family style. We got to meet a lot of interesting travelers as well. 100% recommend if you like to experience and try something new!
A Māori family welcomes you into their land, culture, food, music and life. Magical experience to share!
Wow. This was a great evening. Picked up From hotel, observed and took part in several Māori activities then an excellent dinner with singing and traditional dance during the evening. Delicious food. 100% recommend, don’t miss this wonderful experience.
I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the exceptional service and hospitality our group experienced during our recent visit to Te Pā Tū. From the moment we arrived, every aspect of the experience was executed with outstanding professionalism, warmth, and authenticity. The immersive cultural story-sharing, high-caliber performances, and exquisite feast exceeded all our expectations. Your team’s passion for sharing Māori culture and ensuring every guest feels deeply welcomed made our time truly unforgettable.
Wow Highly recommend An unforgettable experience Learning about the culture, games, songs, language and Haka was incredible
Te Pa Tū is an entertaining, authentic cultural experience for people who want a close-up first hand experience of Māori culture. The guides are knowledgeable, and welcoming. The canapes and dinner showcase the best of New Zealand cuisine with a Māori touch and it is plentiful. You definitely won't go away hungry.
Phenomenal. We couldn't be happier with this experience. It was intimate, authentic, Informational, and of course delicious.
Great cultural experience. It was Informative, engaging and interactive. Performances were great with story telling, singing and dancing. The food was delicious. It was a wonderful experience!! Transportation was also provided and communicated clearly.
Excellent experience from the meeting to the end of evening drop off. Excellent cultural immersion, wonderful blend of learning about the Māori and enjoying an amazing meal.
Learning about arts, crafts, songs and stories of Māori was very interesting. Various family members presented during the evening and their pride and desire to share their culture was evident.
The experience from start to finish exceeded our expectations, the enthusiasm, passion and knowledge of your team was outstanding. We loved that it was interactive and that we had the opportunity to have fun while learning. The meal and performance at the end of the evening was authentic, fun and entertaining. 10/10 will recommend to everyone!!!
10/10 – An Incredible Cultural Experience in the Heart of Rotorua Te Pā Tū was an absolutely incredible cultural experience — engaging, powerful, moving, and full of heart. I loved having the opportunity to learn how to use the poi and take part in the haka. It made the experience feel so interactive and gave me an even deeper appreciation for Māori culture. The hosts were genuinely wonderful people — funny, kind, caring, and incredibly welcoming. They created such a warm atmosphere and made the whole experience so much fun. The performances and singing were incredibly powerful. “Pōkarekare Ana” was especially moving — one of those moments where the whole room seemed to go quiet and simply take in the emotion and beauty of the performance. The food was another highlight. It felt deeply connected to Māori culture, with a sharing-style meal served around large tables. I really loved this because it encouraged everyone to connect, talk, and get to know the other guests on the tour. It made the evening feel less like a performance you were watching and more like an experience you were genuinely part of. This is easily a 10/10 experience and something I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Rotorua. An unforgettable evening filled with culture, connection, laughter, beautiful food, and powerful storytelling. we had a large group of just over 100 but the way you are spread out it does not feel that big, it is very intimate
OMG what an amazing night of learning and sharing.. Fantastic Kai, waiata and laughs..Total must do experience in Rotorua
We booked this based on both a positive write-up in a travel guide and the reviews on TripAdvisor. We had high hopes for an evening where we learned both more about the Maori people and their cuisine. Nope. This was a very expensive tourist trap. The pickup from the hotel was late, the "cultural experience" was definitely not educational (we learned so much more from the museums and other experiences around NZ), far too much time was spent trying to show off songs in other cultures/languages instead of focusing on sharing the Maori culture, and the food was not Maori cuisine. Even one of our other tour members asked where the banana leaves came from. They had no idea how to respond. The food was the equivalent of a Cheesecake Factory. Service was horrible. Rarely did anyone come along for drink refills. During the meal, no serving utensils were provided. You are seated with strangers at large tables where everyone is eating with their utensils and then using them to scoop out food from shared serving plates and bowls. Seriously?! I guess we learned nothing from COVID? Then they brought out pots of tea, but no tea cups. So people were chugging their water and cocktails and pouring hot tea into glasses. THEN they realized it and brought around tea cups - of course, by that time the tea pots were empty. At the end of this horrible evening, they completely forgot to provide dessert to our entire table. While everyone else was finished and headed back to the shuttle, our table was waiting on them to scramble to find dessert. We were frustrated and angry that we spent so much money and time on such a horrible tourist trap that we left and went back to the shuttle to wait. It was at least midnight before we got back. NEVER again. If you want to learn about the Maori people - and their cuisine - this is NOT the place to do it. There are far better places throughout New Zealand. Unless you are being paid to do so, I don't know why you'd ever give this a five-star review!
Great way to spend an evening in Rotorua. Very informative about the Māori culture and customs. Food was great! The welcome and healing ceremony was very moving, and the singers’ voices were all amazing during the ceremony as well as during the performance after dinner.
What a soulful experience, a beautiful opening ceremony, engaging experiences to learn about the history and the culture, and food galore family style. We got to sit with the tribal leaders daughter and she’s incredible. I was so impressed with the singing at the end of the night.
It was an excellent place to come and learn about Maori culture. It felt authentic and everyone was so welcoming. Food was gorgeous and plentiful - be prepared to leave well fed! Plenty of entertainment and culture to absorb - beautiful songs, moving ceremonies, and experiencing some of the games and skills they use. Transfer to and from the venue was easy - some hotels have pickups, or you could go to the Meeting Place in the centre of Rotorua and get picked up from there.
We are from the US, the night was an amazing display of culture, history, talented performers and delicious food! Perhaps there is more nuance to this if you are more local, but we could not be happier with our choice to book here! From transportation at the meeting point, to the intro ceremony, the interactive elements, the very talented, beautiful voices and musicians of the troupe, and the delicious abundance of family style dinner offerings, everything was amazing! We watched them Perform a Haka and then got to try the Haka ourselves! At the end of the night, they dropped us back at our hotel. Thank you and Kia Ora!!!
Excellent cultural experience at Tamaki Maori Village. Before entering the village we had the privilege to see and participate in their welcoming ceremony. We then went inside the village and to different stations or “houses” to learn different parts of the Maori culture such as activities, about their houses, how they use flax and were served local foods at each station . They then explained how they cook the food for their traditional feast and we were escorted into the dining hall for an amazing feast of local foods and traditional music and entertainment.
I needed a break from work (NZ) and used the AI Travel bot on TripAdvisor to make a 3-day weekend plan. I wanted emphasis on highly-ranked, nature, cultural- and art-forward experiences. Te Pā Tū was the first suggestion in the itinerary. I have done a wide array of cultural experiences around the world. The Te Pā Tū evening was truly enjoyable, not as tourist-focused as many things I've seen, and was a self-respecting look at Māori culture and learning for tuaiwi (foreigners). They also went out of the way to make sure diet requirements like vegetarian were accommodated, and it fit seamlessly into the evening. I appreciated learning more about Matariki. I also noted the high quality of the clothing and traditional dress presented by the whanau (family) during the presentations, waiata (songs), and dancing. The singing was high quality, and the food was abundant and excellent. I am already thinking about who in my whanau to bring to Rotorua to take part in this experience in the future.
Super good, fun to watch and partake in. Great entertainment, what amazing singers!! The dinner was stunning, what a beautiful set up and so much food. Delicious! We really appreciate the effort and love that has gone into presenting the evening.
Great experience with lots of interactions with Māori, letting us better understand the history and culture of New Zealand’s indigenous people and its unique culture
We absolutely loved our experience at Te Pā Tū Māori Village. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was welcoming and engaging. The entertainment was outstanding, with talented performers who shared Māori culture in a way that was both meaningful and enjoyable. The food was delicious, with a great variety of dishes that were beautifully presented and full of flavour. It was clear that a lot of thought and care went into the entire experience. Overall, it was a fantastic night out and one of the highlights of our visit. The combination of culture, entertainment, food, and hospitality made for a truly memorable evening. Highly recommend to anyone looking for an authentic and enjoyable experience.
An experience that everyone should do in their lifetime if you live in NZ or not. If you aren't aware of the Maori culture Te Pa Tu will definitely help you to start your learning journey. Wonderful people who made you feel at ease and experiencing different aspects of the Maori culture was awesome. I liked the different canapés e.g. the Kawakawa prawn when you walked around the village, this delicacy was delicious. The overall experience I would recommend to everyone. Like I stated in the beginning of my review, everyone should experience this wonderful place. Ki Ora
Our night started off with a very warm welcome from Bayden whom was such a pleasure to listen too with very informative knowledge and commands. Upon entering Te Pa Tu you get this welcoming from Performers around the fir pit which felt very intimate and warm. In the village we were welcomed to many different games with tasty entrees and history. Moving into the wharekai we than are welcomed by performers and Staff the setting was very colonial and warm the Kai on the table was absolutely beautiful tasty a very well done variety not too much just enough dessert was also yum Overall experience I would definitely come back maybe in the warmer months as our night there was a little bit of rain which didn’t hinder a great experience Thank you to all the performers the Kitchen staff the waitresses our awsome bus driver Uncle Hemi and Bayden the most talented Guide with an amazing voice Nga Mihi Nui Te Pa Tu
My Japanese visitors wanted to do a hangi and concert and they chose Te Pa Tu as they had done some research. I have been here a while back when it was Tamaki Tours. We met the tour at the office in town. Bayden greeted us and explained the process. I tried to translate with my broken Japanese. I think I did it justice. We all enjoyed the experience. My visitors loved the food. おい石買った. The loved the singing 綺麗 they loved performers 凄い. The trip out and back, the activities, the dinner, the performance and the songs from around the world 👍🏽❤️ ありがとございました👍🏽👍🏽
This was an amazing experience. I learned so much about the Maōri people. When you get there first a Welcoming Ceremony then we went to different groups. Learned about Maori tattooing, a stick movement group participation - I just watched that I am clumsy. Then we had a lovely dinner. I actually got to sit with the hosts. A bunch of Great guys. They were So Friendly. They spent the whole time just answering any questions and it was nice having a real conversation with locals.
Our family of four adults joined this cultural experience. It was so special and immersive that we felt like we were actual guests of the Māori family, and almost forgot that we paid for the tour. The performance was wonderful. Food was abundant and very tasty. Will highly recommend.
From the pickup to the drop off this was a great experience. Everyone who I interacted with was very professional and wanted to share. The fire ceremony was wonderful, the interactive exhibits were interesting, and the dinner was delightful. I liked that the family joined each table to eat and interact with the guests. I also enjoyed getting to know the people who were at the same table.
Really lovely people however, the experience was a bit disappointing. The village was a replica, very limited information about the culture & history of the tribe (albeit the activities gave an insight into random aspects of the culture but very little explanation). The singing, music and Haka were the highlights. It was engaging and encouraged participation. Lovely touch with the performers sitting with guests at dinner which is when we found out most information (through asking our own questions). Food was ok and abundant. Overall, a good experience but not value for money.
It was a beautiful cultural experience with stories told around open fires. The music and singing was amazing. The winter Kai (cuisine) was a delicious feast. It was a very special experience.
This was a very interesting and interactive cultural experience, with an amazing meal. Highly recommended
Super fun experience. You'll learn a lot about the Maori culture. You'll participate (optional of course). You'll laugh, clap, and play along quite a bit. The meal was excellent and plenty. I would highly recommend this tour and look no further. Well worth it!
