We continue our visit entering Vatican City, the smallest country in the world. Encircled by a 2-mile border with Italy, Vatican City is an independent city-state that covers just over 100 acres, making it one-eighth the size of New York’s Central Park. Vatican City is governed as an absolute monarchy with the pope at its head. The Vatican mints its own euros, prints its own stamps, issues passports, licenses plates operates media outlets and has its own flag and anthem. One government function it lacks: taxation. Museum admission fees, stamp and souvenir sales, and contributions generate the Vatican’s revenue.
The Vatican Museums feature many works of art that belonged to the different Popes and are full of artistic beauty. Here is a glimpse of some of the most beautiful things to see in the Vatican Museums. Rooms and Galleries of the Vatican Museums, as the Greek Cross Room, the Gallery of Maps, the Gallery of Tapestries, and much more! These collections have been piled up over the course of centuries through acquisitions, donations, commissions, confiscations, and quite often lucky discoveries from underground Rome and not only.
Admire the breathtaking Sistine Chapel of Michelangelo! The most famous section of the Sistine Chapel ceiling is Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam. This scene is located next to the Creation of Eve, which is the panel at the center of the room, and the Congregation of the Waters, which is closer to the altar. Not everything was done by Michelangelo and your expert guide will be able to point that out. This proves just how great artists, even little known, left their marks in these magic locations. This is the right time to discover that!
If you thought the size of the Vatican Museums was overwhelmingly spectacular, St. Peter’s Basilica takes the “wow factor” to another level. The sheer capacity of the interiors is enough to leave any visitor searching for words to describe its vastness. At 613 feet long, 85 feet wide and 147 feet high, it took an incredible 120 years to build, starting from 1506. Admire Michelangelo’s unparalleled Pietà masterpiece and stroll towards the center-right nave to observe Bernini’s 30-foot high bronze Baldachin, which sits directly atop the site of St. Peter’s tomb.
A visit to Vatican City would not be complete without standing in awe of the beauty in St. Peter’s Square, also known as Piazza San Pietro. This massive square, which frames St. Peter’s Basilica, is where the pope holds Wednesday General Audiences and special masses on religious holidays.

We had an amazing experience. Definitely worth it. Highly recommended!
Carlotta was an amazing tour guide, very knowledgeable and would answer questions from group both individually and collectively. Highly recommended.
Brilliant! Valentina has to be the most knowledgeable guide ever
This tour is well worth the money. Skipped the lines, saw the Vatican museum, Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica. The company took great pains to reschedule our tour as there was a chance the Basilica would be closed to visitors during my original scheduled tour. Our tour guide Yanira was great. Good communicator, knew a lot and also had lots of anecdotes delivered in a humourous way. Plenty of chances for toilets and to get drinks, snacks on the way in. Definitely recommend this tour and Yanira.
Mario was very good. He provided a great deal of information and spoke clearly. Wish we had more time in the museum, but we understand tour time was limited.
What a great tour. We had Cynthia who has been doing the tours for 20 years so she knows how to get around the crowds and is incredibly knowledgeable. If I could I would request her again.
Eugene was probably the best guide we have ever had! He was personable, knowledgeable and made the tour special and fun!
I am SO GLAD I booked this tour of the Vatican museums and St Peter's Basilica. I feel like we got all the highlights and our guide, Mario, was fantastic. Absolutely no regrets at all!
Of the many tour companies we used on our trip, these guys were the best! The smaller groups, and line-skipping access (at multiple points) made this worth the price. Our guide, however, made this experience priceless and unforgettable. Eugene spoke with such knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject-- engaging the group with the Socratic method, and genuinely got to know us. His photography background is an additional value add and the shots he took of us are some of my favorite from the trip. We loved our time with him and the company needs to hold on to him.
This tour is everything it says it is. We literally walked past people who must have stood in line for hours. Our guide was enthusiastic and incredibly knowledgeable. She made the tour move at a comfortable pace with plenty of detailed commentary, and she answered every question that came up. She obviously loves her job.
The tour was amazing. I would highly recommend the small group tour. It was worth every penny. The tour guide was exceptional. She was very professional, extremely knowledgeable and had a sweet personality. This is one tour that you should not miss while you are in Rome.
This tour is a must do. It highlights the key areas of the very overwhelming Vatican. Maria our guide was so invested in our tour and wanted to make sure we got everything we had hoped for. She was very attentive to our group and especially my family. We had to walk a little slower and she was very patient and caring. The Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica are beautiful. Pictures do not do justice. It is a must-see to believe and brings tears to the eyes. I’d go again to see additional details.
Excellent tour and tour guide Robert. Be on time. Have your passport ready. Photography not permitted in the Sistine Chapel. Thank you.
Eugene was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and made our trip so interesting!
Valentina was a very good guide but we stayed a little too long in the first courtyard. There was so much to see and we were ready to get started. We could have added a little more time in the museum. Skipping lines and having a smaller group was great!
I would hire Tijana for a private tour with my family and friends so they can all get the amazing experience she provided to us! She had so much enthusiasm and information about everything and her knowledge of art is incredible. The location to meet was easy to find. They provide us with headsets and Tijana moved at a pace that worked for our group of 12. It was perfect and I learned and enjoyed so much!
John was an amazing tour guide. He was very well informed, patient, and personable. He was very thorough through the guide which made us feel we got the VIP experience. Thank you so much John for making our Rome trip that much more memorable.
My daughter and I LOVED our visit of the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel with guide Eugenio. From both of our perspectives (aged 61 and 23 years old, respectively), the visit he led was remarkably informative, engaging, and witty. We really appreciated the creative way in which Eugene went about his story-telling, always shedding a lot of historical light, while also sustaining our interest, no matter how busy and noisy the crowds were around us. He also made terrific choices of what to show us on a relatively short tour of thre hours. All told, we would recommend Eugenio with the highest possible enthusiasm, and are grateful to your company for recruiting him for our tour. Thank you very, very much. PS Eugene, please do look into the Chapelle Sistine des Alpes, if you have a chance; an extremely special, truly extraordinary place!
Small group, 8 people. Excellent presentation by Barbara. Tour was informative and took you through the museum and St. Peter’s. Recommend a very wary tour since the crowds are large.
Emma was great! She was so knowledgeable and kept our 2 kids, ages 10 and 7 so interested! She was also very passionate about what she was teaching, which made it extra special. We feel so fortunate we had Emma as our Vatican tour guide. Thanks, Emma for a memorable experience!
Valentina was so great and informative, I really enjoyed the knowledge and information she had as well as her fun personality. Would book again!
Yanira was our tour guide. She was amazing. Her explanation throughout the tour was very informative and pleasant.
Amazing experience and amazing guide. Excellant vfm
Our guide was super knowledgeable and very friendly. The tour was fantastic. Absolutely beautiful! Skipping the line was worth it, the lines there are very long. We'll worth it. Having a guide explaining everything was also worth it. Would highly recommend this tour, you won't be disappointed!
Wonderful tour with Manuela. She did a great job explaining everything around Vatican City. The skip the line tickets were fantastic as there were huge crowds everywhere.
Eugene was excellent - very knowledgeable and passionate about the Vatican. Meeting place isn't the most convenient, but the tour itself is outstanding. Definitely get the skip the line passes
What a fascinating experience with a very knowledgeable guide. This tour offered “skip the line” access to the Vatican, which is definitely recommended. Our guide, Emma, was wonderful and definitely knew her history of the Vatican. We met our group at the designated meeting space and after several minutes, began our walking trip to the Vatican. There were hundreds of people waiting in line to purchase tickets, but were able to bypass the line and entered the entryway after a quick, but efficient, security screening. Some areas allow pictures, while inside the Sistine Chapel, photos are forbidden. Emma led our group, expertly providing a wonderful and informative history of the art and sculptures within the vast set of buildings that make up the Vatican complex. Beautiful does not begin to describe the Vatican exhibits. Bathrooms are very limited, so pace your coffees, etc. to ensure you do not need to hurry through the halls. As our tour started, we were each handed a picture map of the Sistine Chapel which really helped once we entered. Simply beautiful. No photos, but also, no talking/speaking while inside, which some failed to adhere to. Emma provided an explanation of the beautiful painting by Michaelangelo prior to and after visiting the Sistine Chapel. There is so much to see and then to hear how it was completed is simply fascinating. Emma’s knowledge and patient explanations were extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone wishing to visit the Vatican and receive an excellent historical presentation of many of the wonderful sights within. Emma, well done and thank you so much!
Tour was exceptional. Eugene was extremely friendly and very knowledgeable but the best part of the tour was that it was clear that he loved what he did. A Vatican tour was top of our list for our first visit to Rome and this met every expectation and more.
It's definitely worth the money to skip the lines and have the guide. You could do this same tour multiple times and learn something new each time. Jad did an excellent job.
Six stars! Excellent tour. Valentino was very knowledgeable and very engaging. Do not hesitate to go on this tour. Highly recommend.
Well worth the money. It will wear you out - so don’t plan any other activities right before/after this event
This is overall a good tour, with all the major sights and activities compressed into 3 hours. Ennio was a great guide. If I could give just one single recommendation: visit between mid November and Easter. In peak times you are herded through the Vatican Museum like sheep. Terrible.
wonderful time! Well, worth the money and saves time rather than waiting in lines. Yanira was not only well-versed, she was animated and occasionally funny. I would book again in a heartbeat. Highly recommended to all!
If you want to see anything in Rome, you MUST book a tour! Our tour was three hours long, and the general admission line to get into the Vatican was three hours long (which we went right around)! This was my first time to the Vatican, and I can't say enough about this tour and our guide Tony! So much information, and such a great job getting us from site to site around thousands of people. Tony was just fantastic, knowledgeable, and so very friendly. Easy to find the meeting point, easy check in with the friendly staff. Highly recommend staying at a nearby hotel (we were right around the corner from the meeting point). Just a great tour!
Marie was fantastic. I had no idea the Vatican had a museum of collections from Popes. I was blown away by the volume and appreciated having someone to provide the context. Having a guide made the experience more relaxed so I could just be in the moment and not have to navigate.
Valentina was great fun! She was passionate and very knowledgeable. The tour moves fast and she was able to select works and routes that interest us. She also took an interest in us and the group. Going in a small group was definitely a good choice as it’s easier to stick together and it feels more personal. The headset of course is a practical thing as it’s busy there. Valentina was able to take us through short cuts etc. which meant no queuing. With a long tour, you don’t want to add to it by having to queue for hours. When we were there it was a shame that the crowds weren’t made to be silent in the Sistine Chapel but of course it’s impressive all the same! The Basilica too. I was particularly pleased to see how much my 11yo child engaged with the whole experience and Valentina was great with him. Thank you !
The tour seems quick but it is 3 hours. There is so much to see. It is best to be in a small group. Our guide, Cintzy was very knowledgeable.
The tour was fantastic. Our guide Eugene was the best. He was interesting and very informative. I highly recommend the not standing in line tour with Eugene.
Our tour guide Elaine was wonderful, personable, articulate and knowledgeable with the added benefit of considerable experience in this tour and willing to inform. Would highly recommend this tour.
The guide was outstanding and very knowledgeable. She made it a memorable experience and the entire tour was unforgettable.
Our tour guide Francesca was wonderful. She was knowledgeable, friendly, and very accommodating to answer all the groups questions. She seemed like she truly enjoyed her job and working with others. Our tour of the museum and the Vatican was priceless. A trip we will never forget.
The whole tour was great, the tour guide was engaging and incredibly informative, we had a great time
Our guide, Francesca, made it fun. She was incredibly knowledgeable. No matter what question someone asked, she knew the answer. The pace was good and we all had a goodtime. I especially appreciate that we got to tour St. Peter’s Basilica. I selected this tour specifically because of this inclusion. We also appreciated the small size of the group.
Fantastic tour and our guide, Valentina, was so passionate and wonderful, thank you!!
Ennio was VERY knowledgeable! We couldn’t have had a better tour quide. Wish we could of had him for all the tours we did. I’m sure he’s the best one you have working for you.
Ennio, our guide, was hands down the best guide we ever had! Knowledgeable, friendly and easy to relate to. He shared a personal story or two which enhanced the tour experience and helped in bringing history to life. A true gift.
Valentino’s . She was Amazing
The meeting point was very easy to find, and just a few minutes walk from the Vatican. Our guide , Emma, was very knowledgeable and shared a real joy in her subject - art history. She brought the story of the pieces to life with her tales and infectious enthusiasm. St Peter’s Basilica was incredible but the highlight for me was being so close to the work of Michelangelo after spending a lifetime hearing about it. The ‘slip the queue’ in the title of the trip is interesting. You definitely get to move ahead of those who haven’t booked in advance, and you enter and leave the Sistine Chapel quicker too. Our guide said it had been the quietest day since April, and yet still it was heaving with people. It is such a shame that the Vatican sell so many tickets - it definitely detracts from the experience. That is not the fault of the tour operator in any way, but I think it’s worth noting if anyone in your group struggles with crowds or noise. All in all, this is a must-see visit for your time in Rome. History comes to life before your eyes.
Great tour of the museums, Sistine Chapel and the Basilica. We passed all the lines and the guide John knew all the tricks in the book to make the tour as efficient as possible. He was very informative and stuck to the essentials, integrating with the group. He had a great sense of what the group wanted and made it as interesting, educational and efficient as possible. The tour skips the first lines to the Vatican and continues through a dedicated entrance to the Basilica, as opposed to going out and waiting in line again. Would definitely recommend!
