Rome: Vatican Museums And Sistine Chapel Private Tour

When I was 17, my parents took me and my siblings to Italy for vacation. When I saw the Sistine Chapel for the first time, I was in complete awe. I am now 49 and have 2 boys, ages 17 and 14. My husband has never been to Italy, so I really wanted to bring my own family to Italy for vacation and a top priority for me was to see the Sistine Chapel again, but this time I wanted a private tour. I had been planning this trip to Italy with my travel advisor, Fabio Ilardi of "Italy Bespoke Tours" since 4/2025. I placed my deposit for the entire vacation on 7/2025. Everything seemed pretty much set with the help of Fabio to include this private tour of the Vatican and Sistine Chapel scheduled for June 2026. Our private driver brought us to the meeting point early before the start time of 9am. About 7 minutes past the meet up time, there was no guide in sight. I then called Bellissima Italy who was the company Fabio booked our private tour with. When I called, the receptionist informed me that I was not on the reservation books. Devastated is not a strong enough word to express how I felt when she said this to me. I then texted Fabio via WhatsApp to ask what happened. Fabio called me on my cell phone and basically explained to me that in all the years he has worked with Bellissima Italy something like this "has never happened". Somehow the company missed my reservation. He explained further that normally he would be very upset with a company when something as catastrophic like this affects his client's vacation, but he said he could not bring himself to be upset since historically Bellissima Italy is an excellent company. Fabio quickly worked with me to reconfigure the day. We were supposed to go to the Pantheon in the afternoon after our morning Vatican and Sistine Chapel tour. He changed our Pantheon tickets to 10am instead of 2pm. He then got word that Bellissima Italy was able to find a guide last minute to do a tour with us at 12:30pm. We hopped into an Uber taxi, went to the Pantheon for an hour then got another taxi to return to the Vatican. Fabio was so kind and reimbursed us the costs of our taxi rides. We met up with our guide, Milena who was just excellent from start to finish. She was so efficient in getting us checked in. Once we entered the Vatican she did a wonderful job giving us so much history on the architecture and the art seen. She had a very calm presence and we did not feel rushed at all. She informed us that she has been doing tours for the past 26 years! She brought life and meaning to all the beautiful pieces seen along the way. I particularly loved how she explained things we should look out for inside the Sistine Chapel before we entered it since there were these nice posters of the Sistine Chapel art in the court yard for tourists to look at before entering. Milena would even show us mosaic art on the ground that many tourists would just walk over and not even realize. I enjoyed how she would highlight pieces like Botero's "Trip to the Ecumenical Council". My boys loved the roundness of the bishop walking down the hill and found that to be entertaining. Bottom line is Milena saved the day! She turned my frown upside down. Because of Milena, I forgive you, Bellissima Italy! I kindly ask that you give Milena an extra paycheck. She so deserves it filling in literally last minute. She saved your site from a really, really sad review posting. Thank you Milena! You are the best! Also, thanks to Bellissima Italy in scrambling last minute. This shows you care about your clients and strive to make things right. Tania was a fantastic tour guide. She speaks English very clearly and presented a lot of information to us in a manner easy to understand and remember.

Laura was an excellent guide! She was very knowledgeable and told great stories that related to the tapestries, art, and sculptures.

I had scheduled a tour of St Peter's Basilica, and this tour is not guided. The tour guide tells you highlights prior to but does not accommodate you.

Great experience! Our guide was very knowledgeable and asked a ton of questions to make sure we saw everything we could. Budget for at least 4 hours to get the full experience and also be prepared for crowds.

It was a great tour. Would not go to the Vatican without a guide. She was great in helping us navigate a very very crowded space pointing out things that she thought we’d like or couldn’t miss. Absolutely amazing! The personal attention and skip the line on this private tour was worth it. We needed the ability to control the tour pace so most of our tours were private since one of our family members was 85 years old. Our guide on this tour Laura Russo was the best she went above and beyond. She gave personal attention making sure she was shaded, had rest times, could hear and understand the information, and helped her maneuver through all the crowds. Cannot say enough about how great she was to our family member. The best private tour we had during our Rome trip. Highly recommend this tour and Laura as your guide.

Beatrice was a great tour guide for our family. She kept our kids (age 9, 11) engaged by keeping the conversation kid appropriate and engaging. We missed the opportunity to see the Pieta at St. Peter’s because I misunderstood a question she asked me about stopping there. But overall, we had a very positive experience on this tour.

The biggest surprise was St. Peter’s. We were awe struck at its size and beauty. Enjoyed they other portions very much. I wish I would have had family make lust of items to make sure we see. With the shirt time you can not skim some areas. Lia was very good except one area. We skipped the gift shop inside and quickly walked us outside to a shop that seemed expensive and never had the chance at the inside one. Still a little upset about that.

Valentina did an excellent job! She knows a lot of interesting facts and stories! She knew the shortcuts, and the ins and out to make the most of our time at the Vatican! Highly recommend!

Fantastic tour. Giulia, who was our guide, was great--clearly incredibly knowledgeable, gave us history lessons on the Vatican and literally every piece of art we walked by. I wouldn't visit the Vatican in any other way!

We had an amazing tour. Giulia was an incredible guide whose experience and passion for the topic came through. She also tailored the tour for our family and really dove into the technique and development of the various artistic eras (which was of interest to us). She was eager for questions, a great listener, and a wonderful host. It was all around awesome and our kids (9 and 12) were totally into it. They barely noticed it was 3 hrs and were ready to go longer (which surprised me).

Our tour was guided by Valentina! Valentina was very knowledgeable about the Vatican. There is so much to see at the Vatican, but she went over the highlights and more. She also made sure all of us felt comfortable during the tour. I would highly recommended booking this tour! Being in a small tour group made visiting the Vatican much more enjoyable.

I cannot recommend this tour enough. Guilia was engaging, funny and so passionate about art and history that we were all engaged the entire time. We were able to do a private tour with her, my partner and my parents. It was amazing to be able to ask questions and take our time when we wanted to look at something further. Valentina was everything I could have ever hoped for going on this magnificent journey through time. So incredibly knowledgable about everything you'll see inside and outside, and well, the entirety of Rome pretty much if you ask. She was not only very descriptive about the meet-up point, but was very much early and ready to go first thing in the morning so we were right in front of the line to get in. While in line before they opened she talked thoroughly about some of the Sistine Chapel and a couple other things we might see inside. Inside, Valentina makes quite the impression telling you magnificent stories, for just about anything and everything of interest, inside the museum. I never once felt like she was incapable of answering any question I could have had the whole trip. Having a host that is simultaneously, extremely enthusiastic about the history of humankind, while also being present in the moment, really makes a huge difference.

My husband and I actually took this tour with the fill-in guide, Santi. He was absolutely amazing! This guy knows so much about everything he was showing us and he was super passionate! He is an expert in marble so we also got some really cool little tidbits about the different kinds of marble throughout the Vatican which we then found ourselves noticing throughout the rest of our trip in Italy! I would 100% book this tour again!

Our guide,Santi, was wonderful. He was prompt and friendly, and made us all feel welcome. His passion for and knowledge of the Vatican Museums (and their collections) was evident from the very start. He was great about answering questions and always went above and beyond to engage our very diverse group. Although not our first visit to the Vatican, we learned so many new things. Valentina made this such a memorable experience with her vast knowledge of the sculptures, paintings, architecture, and history of everything at the Vatican and the Sistine chapel. The Tour was amazing. Bernadette is excellent. Gentle and with a lot of knowledge. I recommend it to everyone. Small groups make all the difference. For Brazilians, the tip is to have a guide who speaks Portuguese for this and other tour. Highly recommended.

There are no adequate words to describe the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, as always. The opportunity to visit them in this period of very little influx and the very prepared guide, allowed us to capture all the splendor.

Valentina is an experienced and capable guide. We stayed with her for over 3 hours and time flew by! He answered all our questions with precision and competence. Highly recommended to do with her the guided tour of the Vatican Museums, because there is too much to see and going alone you risk finding yourself confused. Guided instead is a different experience! In this period then the number of tourists is definitely tolerable so it is absolutely appropriate to take advantage of it.

The museums are already very beautiful and the Sistine chapel is amazing, but certainly the difference was made by our guide, who was very accurate in the descriptions of what we met, but without ever being heavy, coloring the technical information with anecdotes and curiosities! Highly recommended.
