I actually cancelled the reservation because I could not locate the place to turn in the vouchers and obtain the tickets. The system is difficult. In order to take the excursion I would have to go in person to two different locations and the instructions were NOT clear about the locations of each. Why can’t you send the actual tickets instead of a voucher that needs to be redeemed in a spot that can’t be easily located???
Great self guided experience which works well with a visit to the nearby Colosseum. Trajan’s column is very impressive and market interesting also
Struggled a bit to find the entrance but this is a hidden gem, walking through a ‘shopping centre’ that’s nearly 2000 years old is mind blowing, much less crowded than the well known sites, this is an absolute must!!
Tip - be prepared to stand in the queue to get your voucher. We did not know and ended up walking to Trajan’s market after we got our voucher alone. There is a movie to the left of the queue that you will watch first. No one was there to explain what we were supposed to do. I hope this helps others understand.
Unlike modern day markets these ruins are the remains of Emperor Trajan's structure built around 100AD. He built a multi level building housing shops & apartments and over the years it had many varied uses from military strongholds to convents. There is a museum open that highlights sections of the remains, check for when it's open!
The Roman Forum and Market is incredible! But TripAdvisor sold us these tickets for a Sunday tour. Sundays are free. I do appreciate a rapid refund, but TripAdvisor should know more about what they are promoting to avoid situations like this. The tour would have been worth the price. If you can go on Sunday, it's not terribly crowded and ... free!
The forum entrance was closed and we couldn’t pick up our tickets because giro d’italia bike race was happening in Rome that day so we travelled there and lost the money for the tickets
I have seen so much about Trajans market on TV and read about it. I have seen it at distance and always wanted to see it up close. When visiting Rome my wife and I walked by the museum entrance I decided to go in and my wife decided to go to Piazza Venezia to wait and watch people. The museum and archaeological area is well worth a visit. The museum itself is interesting and you get a good background for the imperial forums as well as for the "oldest shopping mall" itself. Parts of it almost gives a pompeii vibe where you do get a feel for what it may have looked like in ancient times. There are also bathrooms and vending machines in place.
You must see the Trajan Market. On the way from Forum Romanum there are so many other things to see like the Forum Lilium and over the road the Fora di Augusto and the Trajan Forum itself. These are all brilliant but at the back of the Trajan Forum is the Trajan Market. Access is from the Largo Magnanapoli side. It is a truly extraordinary place. Basically it’s a Roman era shopping mall with an inside built around an atrium and outside there are shops on the street. It is so well preserved that it looks like the shops could still be there and it, more than anything I have seen in Rome gives the physical essence of what their streetscapes were like. It is a really interesting experience seeing day to day architecture rather than the monumental architecture of the different Forums. It’s very relatable and is if a couple of lads came around the corner in Togas they wouldn’t look out of place. A little gem!
It is near the Piazza Venezia and you cannot miss it. The ruins are a bit random and not well reserved.
A must see when you visit Rome. Here you are absolutely walking with the ghosts of the Roman empire. The market stalls and streets around them are in such pristine condition, that you really get the feel of what it was like 2000 years ago. Said to be perhaps the oldest "shopping mall" in the world, it is a great spot to visit.
You could so easily miss this museum and the Trajan markets within & it seems many visitors do. We almost had this beautiful and historic place to our selves in contrast to the main Roman forum which was heaving. We cannot understand why. The museum is exceptionally well displayed with videos explaining the context of many of the exhibits and finally helping us get to grips with the confusing jumble that seemed to be the imperial forums. One can walk the empty hemisphere corridors and the streets and imagine you have stepped back in time . After six days exploring many of Romes ancient and beautiful buildings this was our favourite. Don’t miss it. Also to note there is a back entrance to the main forum by Trajan’s column where you can buy a ticket (excluding the colosseum) without fuss or queues so if like us you want to visit the forum more than once this is an excellent way to enter for your second visit
Passed this museum on a previous trip to Rome and wanted to go inside. Managed to do it this time and it was so well worth it. Very interesting site lots to see with wonderful views across to the Altare Della Patria and much less crowded than other historical/ archeological sites. Only problem is its a little difficult to find your way out. Well worth a visit.
We’ve wanted to tour this side of the forum for fifteen years We visited this attraction on a whim as we were passing the entrance to Museo dei Fori Imperiali and saw that it was open. We are so glad that we did as we didn’t realize that it includes an opportunity to tour the Mercati di Traiano on the inside, something we’d been wanting to do for fifteen years. We’d seen the site of Trajan’s market from a distance many times on our trips to Rome and always longed to go inside to look around. The Museo dei Fori Imperiali is both an archaeological museum and an opportunity to tour the ancient Roman site which is now open to the public. The market consists of a semicircular complex of more than 150 shops and offices built in the period of Emperor Trajan located next to the Trajan Forum. The markets are located on the slope of the Quirinal Hill and the complex consisted of five floors, where all manner of goods required by ancient Roman households were traded. It’s really easy to imagine the sellers with their wares in each of the market units. The tour, though, consists of so much more than this as you can visit all five floors of the complex. A must-do site has been ticked off our to-do list.
We were walking to the Forum and on a whim decided to stop in here. We were so glad we did. First, unlike many of the archaeological sites in Rome, this one was NOT overrun with tourists. The ruins themselves are beautiful and from the windows you can look out over some of the other sites. The only thing I wished is that there were a better guide to what I was looking at. Some of the exhibits were good, with English translations, but I would have liked to understand even a little more. Maybe I should have hired a guide? We also liked the exhibit of amphorae. And, I will say that Trajan's Markets were cooler than outside. On a hot day, this would be a nice place to spend some time.
The Markets themselves are great to look around, the check in is a little far from the markets. It wasn't specific that once you had your ticket you were free to roam on your own.
We went at the Touristation Ara Coeli first for the check-in, they let us chose the entrance time we wanted for the museum and saw a 20minutes video that showed us how the markets looked like during the Imperial Age! It was easy to find the entrance to the museum's, went there immediately after the movie. The archeological area is stunning, glad we found out those were not the same as the Roman Forum but two different areas requiring two different tickets!
I visited Trajan's markets and it was a beautiful experience because it is a construction of the Roman era where passing from one environment to another you see models of constructions and buildings of the era reconstructed in miniature that creates a magical atmosphere.
I visited this venue just yesterday, as soon as the museums in Italy opened again. The place is extremely beautiful and the view from the upper part is breathtaking.
Visiting the Trajan markets is a fascinating immersion in ancient Rome. It is possible to explore shops, offices and public spaces that gave life to this imposing complex, now revitalized with artifacts, models and surrounding reconstructions. Each Mood reveals details of the urban and commercial routine of the time, while the Imperial Forums Museum, installed on site, complements the experience with historical pieces of great value. This is a unique opportunity to dive into the history of Roman Forums and understand how the administrative and economic heart of the Empire worked.
Local maravilhoso. Guia espetacular. Vista do Vaticano e de Roma.
Very suggestive experience that I recommend to everyone; Touriststation staff very knowledgeable and friendly.
took advantage of the reopening yesterday. Very suggestive place. The imperial forums are a sight. The meeting point is very central
