This is a frequently overlooked gem!! The 360 views from the top are the best bar none. The history is fascinating too.

This is a fascinating site that evolved over many centuries, and Alec is a terrific guide—superb at explaining not only the structure itself but also how the history of the Castel Sant'Angelo fits within the story of Rome. The terrace at sunset was an added bonus. Very highly recommended.

We really enjoyed this interesting, low-key, less crowded tour (as compared to tours at the Colosseum and Vatican Museum and St. Peter's!) The castle has a fascinating history and the views from the top level are wonderful - as is the cafe on the roof top as well.

Castle San Angelo requires a tour guide, without that you have no idea what’s the history within those walls and the young lady who guided us was fenomenal, she was very knowledgeable and passionate for the history. My husband and I love it!

The tour was well organized by the tour operator. We started and ended the tour on time. The tour guide provided a lot of historical insights about the castle.

I’m giving it a 4-star because when we got there, the tour guide was not there. Then she arrived almost at the time we were scheduled to start the tour. She was very informative and taught us many things about the castle and about San Angelo. I enjoyed it in overall.

My partner and I enjoyed this tour, and our guide, Alec, was very informative! Being able to see the layered history of this incredible rotunda - from an ancient mausoleum, to an imposing fortress - was truly fascinating. We were also able to have an amazing view over the city once we reached the Terrazza dell’Angelo. I would highly recommend a visit to Castel Sant'Angelo!

The tour was fantastic! The guide was very knowledgeable and gave lots of information. The instructions to meet the guide were perfect. We showed up 30 minutes early and they were already there.

Sylvia!! Our tour guide was AMAZING!! She was soo knowledgable, warm, kind, and very caring. She catered to all of our questions and comments and gave us so much information on Castel. Wonderful tour guide!! The only downside was the GOOGLE MAPS location to checking in before the tour guide. It made us go around the castel and if it weren’t for us using our common sense, we would have been lost and late to the tour. The check in place was right infront of Castel’s gate.

The tour of the Castel Sant’Angelo was very interesting. We got to see the sights and learn the history within the Castel and also see the panoramic views of the city of Rome from around it and on the top of it.

I’ve been to Rome 3 times and finally got to go here. It was fantastic! Impressive views and and history. More to see than I thought. Highly recommend.

While our tour guide was great, the castel is fairly small and after I don't know if the tour was really worth it. If you want to know details, then it's great. Otherwise, do this on your own.

Tour guide showed up a little late and my tour was supposed to the be express 1 hour and I was paired with a couple that had a 2 hour tour, so I had to leave early as I had another appointment to get too. Plan enough time.

We had a wonderful tour of Castel with an informative and funny guide.We learned about historical Rome including the Castel’s role through different periods of history. The panoramic views of the city were breathtaking offering a unique view of Rome’s skyline including nearby Vatican

This was a great tour that we booked last minute because a different tour operator cancelled our booking for the Colosseum with no notice. This was a great tour with a very entertaining guide. Amazing the amount of history you can see in a single site.

This tour was great! Our guide Agnes was great! This was one of the best tours of our trip! The Castel, is amazing! We saw other tourist struggling to wind their way around the gorgeous castle. The time wasted trying to figure it all out on your own can't be reclaimed. Go with a tour guide. If you can afford a private tour guide, great! But don't go alone! You'll miss so much!

I previously visited this site with a friend and did the mobile-guided tour, which was fine and cheap, but when experiencing this guided tour with my wife I found I got a lot more information from it and a wider perspective. We had booked the express tour because we only had a short time free and didn't want to be spending too long here. However, on the day we found that we had been merged with a longer tour due to numbers and the tour was further prolonged due to some Italians booking the wrong tour. Credit to the guide for managing to do the tour in English and Italian at the same time, but the consequence of this was that it took much longer than it should have done. Although we could have left early, we would then have missed parts of the castle which would otherwise have been guided, so we were a little disappointed by this.

Our tour guide Valeria was amazing. We signed up for a group tour but it turned out no one else signed up and we had a private tour! Valeria was incredibly knowledgeable about so much history regarding the Castel Sant'Angelo. So many details and interesting facts we wouldn't have learned about. It made the tour so interesting. 100x better than just wandering around on our own. Loved it!

I hadn’t been sure about adding this to our itinerary, but I’m so glad we booked this tour. By chance we planned this on our last day of our trip, which turned out to be perfect as the tour of this multi-leveled castle ties together many parts of Roman history, from ancient through the renaissance. It was great fun to look out at the amazing 360 views of the city from the terrace and spot all the places we have been through the week. Alec was a really engaging guide — the tour felt like a university lecture, in the best way. Our family learned a lot, and it really tied together what we have seen and learned at the other historic places in Rome. One thing to note — when I booked, I thought it was going to be an express one hour tour, but our tour was actually about two hours. If you need to be finished at a particular time, you may want to make sure of the length of the tour. As it turned out, the two hour time frame was fine for us. There is an option to have a drink in the lovely bar before heading back out into the city.

An excellent tour with Alec, who was very enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable with all aspects of Roman history and it's context. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour.

The tour guide was excellent and very knowledgeable. He was engaging and it was just a very enjoyable experience all around. He was top notch. The only negative was that the site appeared overbooked (I don’t think that was the fault of the tour operator) so there was a delay getting in. Since it was a pretty hot and sunny day that led to some frustrated folks.

We had a small group of 6 which made this a comfortable tour. Our guide was terrific and very knowledgeable. This is not one of the more crowded sights, but should not be missed!

Great tour guide Beautiful castle with a lot of history. Nice view of Rome. It was good to have a nice drink after the tour at the bar.

The tour is described as a 1-hour express tour. It was. 2 hours of talking about, in addition to the building itself, how frescoes are created (is this an art history lesson?), the art located in other buildings (!), and an in-depth description of Christian virtues. There is no mention in the description that you’ll be climbing almost as many steps as in St. Peter’s (when it’s like 40*C out). The guide had good info, but I signed up for the tour as described based on what I wanted to do. This tour was not it.

Agnes was a wonderful tour guide and loved sharing the history of Rome and the Castle with our group. The Castle is beautiful, and we enjoyed this tour much more than the other more popular tourist destinations in Rome.

Alec was a fantastic tour guide, knowledgeable, articulate, entertaining, passionate about sharing his knowledge with his guests. You will learn more than just the history of this amazing building, but also gain an understanding of how things came to be. I've heard before how ancient buildings were looted over time for building materials. Alec preferred the term "Recycled" which is a more intelligent, non- judgemental view of this practice. The tour takes you to the top of the building for an unparalleled panoramic view of the city - spectacular! Taking this tour will enhance your experience and appreciation of Castel Sant' Angelo tenfold!
