Itinerary
You will start the tour meeting your friendly, professional guide at our meeting point in the very center of the city in Piazza Venezia. This square has been the center of the city for over 2000 years and the architects who shaped the view we see today range from Julius Caesar to Napoleon and even Michelangelo, whose artist’s studio was in this very square! Here you will learn about all the different influences that shaped Rome over its long history and made it the city that it is today. You will also get a view of the large monument Altare della Patria, more commonly known as the Vittoriano as it is a monument dedicated to Italy's first King.
From Piazza Venezia, a short walk will take you to Largo di Torre Argentina where ancient temples stand towering over the actual spot where Julius Caesar was assassinated. Here you’ll learn more about Julius Caesar’s incredible life and gruesome death, how he went from an unknown soldier to ruling an empire, and why it was all so violently taken from him.
From there the tour continues to the beautiful Baroque square of Piazza Navona to see the famous fountains designed by Bernini. Learn about his rivalry with Borromini, the great master who was building the Church of St. Agnes next door and the fight that this led to, and see the place where Tom Hanks almost drowned in the film ‘Angels and Demons’. Your guide will also give you insight into the tradition of having aperitivo on the square and tell you of the best places to partake in this Italian cultural experience.
Next we go towards the Pantheon, the Christian church that was once a temple to all the Roman gods, and admire the architecture of the iconic freestanding dome that has stood in its original form since the emperors ruled Rome. Here, for those who want it, we have the opportunity to stop for a coffee or a gelato before moving on toward the Trevi Fountain, stopping on the way to see some hidden gems.
The Trevi fountain has become one of the most iconic monuments of the city and the backdrop for many on screen legends from Audrey Hepburn to James Bond, and throwing a coin over your shoulder into the fountain ensures that you will come back to the city. We will stop and admire the fountain while you learn the history of the site as well as exactly how to toss your coin into the fountain.
Last but not least, the tour heads towards Piazza di Spagna and the world famous Spanish Steps. Surrounded by the top fashion brands today, the steps leading up to the church Trinita dei Monti have always been a fashionable place to hang out since they were completed in 1725 and have been a common haunt of artists, models and poets to this day. The tour ends at the top of the stairs looking over the city from one of the best views in town where you can soak it all in and wonder what is next for this ever-changing city.

We did the Rome City Walking tour the day we arrived in Rome from USA. It was a great way to get familiar with the city and determine where to spend more time. Our guide was awesome! Unfortunately I can’t remember his name. But he was Scottish. 😍 He had great enthusiasm about the city and was great to get to know.
This was a great way to start the morning seeing some of the more interesting sights in Rome. Guide was very knowledgeable, answering questions and giving the facts. The stop for Gelato was a nice touch. If you want a great taste of history with an easy approach and not to crazy this tour is for you.
Very knowledgeable guide - animated and interactive with the group. Also knew his archeology stuff! Great job!
Overall, an excellent experience - Jaime (from Scotland!) was extremely animated and knowledgeable - explaining the various historical and artistic artifacts along the way. Of course, some of the main / popular areas, were very crowded but this is normal nowadays. I recommend Jaime to anyone who wants to go "below the surface" and really understand the background of each location!
James was a very good guide, very knowledgable and provided a lot of good history. Covered a decent amount of ground in a short time
Excellent tour and Jamie was great and so informative. Definitely recommend
This was the best tour we had in Rome. Jamie was so knowledgable. He told us historical information well beyond the normal guide. His passion was infectious. When we are in Rome again we will ask for him specifically and take the same tour again. We highly recommend you take this tour. It's better than the large group tours where we are rushed through everything to complete the tour.
James was a great tour guide. We loved how detailed he was and how he made the entire trip informational. Every couple steps, he would give us some additional pieces of information.
Very nice experience. Though we were running late because our map kept leading us to the wrong place, Daniel waited for us, and we weren’t disappointed. Daniel took us to many historical sites and was patient in letting us take time to take pictures. Even stopping to treat us both to some delicious ice cream. The best I ever tasted, from 150 flavours to choose from. A very great tour, a very good tour guide. Barbara and Joe
Not great, couldn't understand the tour guide very well with his American accent. also one of us was russian and one Estonian and understood nothing at all, he seemed like he couldn't be bothered and seemed quite anti Rome. The tour we paid for said includes coffee or Ice cream, but tour guide said he would only pay for I've cream.
On the day of the tour we had "Severe Thunderstorm" warnings and rain. On top of that, my partner woke up feeling under the weather. We asked if we could postpone the tour one day. Not cancel, not refund, just postpone. There were no tickets needed to any of the attractions...it was simply a walking tour. Even Viator reached out to the tour company for us. They told us (and Viator) no. Was hoping for a little grace and sympathy, but you won't get it from these guys. Plan accordingly.
We were able to see and hear about the interesting history all along the walking tour. I would recommend this experience
We absolutely loved this tour on foot. It was a great way to get a sense of the city and enjoy the knowledge and experience of someone with a deep understanding of history in Rome. It was a 10/10 for us with James, absolutely book him if you have the opportunity! He has a wide knowledge of many subjects and he knows exactly what to highlight on his tours. Highly enjoyable!
James was excellent and very knowledgeable about the history of Rome. A very enjoyable experience, and just the right duration
This tour had it all--historical background, interesting storytelling, dynamic energy, a courteous host, and delicious gelato!
Great tour! Itvwas good to see as much as possible in a few hours. Our guide was very knowledgeable and fun!
Angela was awesome! Great tour with so many little tidbits on city history through the ages. She also made great recs on where to go, what to see (and when to go), and where to find the best “off the beaten path” food and adult bev options in the city. What an awesome way to spend a couple hours in the city. Highly recommend!
Absolutely loved our tour with Daniel. This small-group tour ended up being just our family. He was fun, funny, and offered lots of interesting historical stories; we learned a lot. Gladly accommodated some requests from us along the way, too. Highly recommend if you want to see these main sights and have a lovely time doing it.
It was our first tour in Rome, and we were lucky, it was just my sister and I. Our guide, Dimitri, was excellent, very knowledgeable and showed us a few hidden gems along the way. Would definitely recommend!
Not only did we see many of the key highlights of Rome, but also got recommendations for other things to do on our own. We also got great recommendations regarding food! The gelato we had during the tour was amazing - best we had on our trip! I would recommend this tour to anyone looking for a great introduction to the city of Rome.
This walking tour was wonderful and our guide, Angela, was amazing. I recommend those who are either new to Rome or not that familiar with Rome's history to take this tour. We (a family of four with two teenage boys) learned so much from Angela in just a couple of hours. Plus, the gelato was delicious! Angela was so great, we took her up on an offer for another tour of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill - also a big hit. Her tours were the best we had on our 7 day trip to Rome.
Fantastic small group tour of Rome city highlights by Angela, provided great insight and an amazing knowledge of the history of Rome. Very engaging, incorporating some humour and fun facts. Would highly recommend this small group tour option for a more personal exploration of this amazing city.
I do several tours whenever I travel, including other Rome walking tours and this was easily one of the absolute best. Our tour guide Angela explained that they do small size tours for an intimate experience and our group of 6 just so happened to get an unexpected private tour. The number of stops we made far exceeded what most other walking tours included and for each one, she had at least one interesting story to share. Even when we asked her a question, she would pull out a fascinating detailed answer that filled in so much more. She did her studies in the classics and her level of knowledge really shined. The stop also included some yummy gelato for each of us which was a nice way to cap the last bit of the tour. And she went clearly above and beyond, our tour lasting closer to 3 hours than the 2 hours and 15 minutes listed (although I'm sure if we were in more of a rush she would have accommodated). Some of the extra time came from allowing some extended breaks so the kids could use the bathroom. All in all, I would give this tour the highest recommendation.
Angela did a great job showing us an area of Rome. We were supposed to have gelato or coffee. Did not get.. Angela took pictures of our family. Supplied us w extra info to help us.
We had a wonderful time. It was great to have so much of the city put into context. The history, details, and stories were well delivered.
We originally booked a tour with another group and were scrambling around to find them only to discover later that the tour got canceled. In our attempt to find where the tour had gone, we metJames and two other people in his small group tour. He helped us try to find our group, but then when that proved to be futile, he graciously made arrangements to add us to his tour. He checked with the others to make sure they were cool us joining them and they happily welcomed us to the group. I’m so happy that the other tour canceled because James was a SPECTACULAR guide! His knowledge of Roman history was extensive. Every story he told us was fascinating; really bringing ancient history to life. He spoke about the historic figures like Caesar, Bernini, Raphael and Michelangelo like they were actual people and not just occupants of dusty old text books. James was filled with information that didn’t feel like it was straight from a script. He answered our questions knowledgeably and was never stumped by our queries. The spots we went to were typical tourist places, but James went above and beyond the typical tour guide rhetoric. He gave us unique stories and little things to focus on; things that we might’ve missed otherwise. There was a sort of art history bent to the tour, which we loved. The easy-going, conversational aspect of the tour made it feel personalized and special. We were able to learn so much about Roman history—and there’s a LOT of history—in such a short amount of time. The hours flew by too quickly and we were sad for it to end. We HIGHLY recommend this tour. It was such a happy accident that we ended up on James’ tour and we’re thrilled that it worked out the way that it did. What a great way for us to kick off our first vacation day and our very first time in Rome. Grazie!
Great guide. Very knowledgeable and friendly. Stressed hydration and tried to find shade where possible. Would definitely recommend to others!
We did a food walking tour in the early evening with Leona, and we had a wonderful time! Her enthusiasm for Rome was infectious! I loved the spots we hit during the tour as well.
Great tour — ended up with a private tour and James made it so special for us! He is a master of the historical detail and spent extra time sharing hidden secrets of Ancient Rome with us. Highly recommend — wear comfortable shoes!
Thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour of Baroque Rome. Our guide was knowledgeable about both the city and the monuments we visited. As we were the only members of the group we could move pretty quickly from place to place. We appreciated his shortcuts through the crowded streets and side door entries into some of the churches. He quickly assessed that we had some knowledge of the works we were visiting and adjusted his talk accordingly. I would definitely use this company again when in Rome.
10000/10 experience!! Roman Vacations provided the best experience we could’ve asked for. Both our guides, Brian and Mircea, were SO knowledgeable and made it feel so personal. We did a walking tour of the historic city center of Rome with Brian and a Colosseum and ancient Rome tour with Mircea. Angela was too kind and helped us curate the perfect schedule. She provided tons of local spots to eat and see and was an awesome communicator. We booked a bit last minute but they were very accommodating. Overall, definitely the place to book your tours for the ultimate experience! Thanks a bunch!!
Loved the tour , I was alone and the tour guide made it very interesting . He was very informative, allowed moments for photos and was not rushing . Showed me some hidden gems of Rome …. I would definitely recommend this tour on your visit to Rome … some really beautiful hidden gems to see around the city. He also Recommended some really good food places .. 10/10
My wife and I went on a Rome walking tour. Our travel guide arranged this event for us. We met our guide, James, near the Trajans Columns. It was a small group, just my wife and I. James was very knowledgeable and did a great job explaining all the history of the buildings and the rulers who lived there. James was originally from Welsh and has a history degree. He’s been giving tours in Rome for several years. He loves the city and it shows. He was very patient and answered all our questions. Roman Vacations specializes in giving tours to small groups, which is the best way to go. He can even recommend a great restaurant to try. A tour guide is needed when visiting Rome because there is so many things to see!
The walking tour was simply amazing! The guide was passionate and funny and it showed! Covid procedure was followed throughout the entire experience!
Took a group of friends for my second tour with this company and it was even better than the first. A special one-off tour to celebrate the birthday of Rome focused on the myths and legends - an area even more amazing to learn about that the factual history. We finished up outside of the Colosseum just a few metres from the absolute epicentre of the original city and you could truly feel like you were transported back 2770 years and feel the energy. These guys are like a little rock group with their talismanic front men and super sassy girls running the show. The tour guide, James, was fascinating, eloquent, enthusiastic and highly entertaining and he even had his butler do part of the tour too!!
The awesome tour guide and the way he framed Rome’s history through stories. Highly recommend for kids, adults, locals, expats and tourists
Very informative tour around the main sights in the center of Rome, great organization and very good tour guide, recommended for everyone interested in a little bit of history combined with interesting and fun facts.
Great, friendly and knowledgeable guide - lots of interesting facts. A fantastic day to see the city's sites
Had a great experience with them. The entire tour (In the footsteps of the popes) was very informative and interesting. Good value for money.
Amazing tours by expert and super friendly guides! I really enjoyed the walking tour. I learnt so much and I had fun at the same time! If you want to know about the secrets of Rome while you walk around the city this company is highly recommended guys!
It was an awesome experience. The information about the history of ancient structures given by the tour guide was very elaborate and interesting.
This group is super well organized. We were warmly welcomed, oriented, ran the covid protocol, then started out (amazingly right on time). The tour was to cover the Jewish Ghetto, but was really a Ghetto+plus tour. We walked along the base of the Capitoline, through the interior of the Ghetto, across to the Isola Tiberina and into the neighborhood of Trastevere. Our guide Mircea did an excellent job of peeling away the layers of Roman history -- ancient, old and contemporary -- not too much, not too little, every bit of it engaging. I learned tons, and best of all had a great day out. Thanks Mircea!!
Had a wonderful time learning about the history behind Rome's attractions! The approximately 2 hour walking tour is a perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon, and knowing the history of your surroundings makes your tourist experience a hundred times better!! I'd definitely like to go again!
I am Roman and I know the capital well, but the guys on the tour were fabulous and the tour very interesting and fun. Many of the things they told me I wasn't aware of
