The church is known for the masterpiece of Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the Cornaro Chapel, the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. The basilica has become extremely popular since it appeared in the novel Angels & Demons, written by the American author Dan Brown.
Construction of the building began in the year 135 under the direction of the Emperor Hadrian, who intended to use it as mausoleum for himself and his family. The building was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and is now a museum. You will see Castel Sant'Angelo from the outside and your tour guide will tell you all about its history.
The Pantheon is without any doubt one of the best preserved ancient monuments in Rome. It is a wonderful example of the reutilization from a Christian perspective of a sacred building consecrated to all Gods. It stands in the heart of the ancient Campus Martius, in one of the lowest parts of Rome, and its imposing facade dominates the southern side of Piazza della Rotonda. In 1870 the Pantheon became the shrine of the kings of Italy and hosts the mortal remains of Victor Emanuel the Second, Humbert the First and Margaret of Savoy and also Raffaello Sanzio, the supreme artist of the Renaissance, is buried in the Pantheon. You will see Pantheon from the outside and your tour guide will tell you all about its history.
The Parish Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo is a titular church and a minor basilica in Rome run by the Augustinian order. The church contains works by several famous artists, such as Raphael, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Caravaggio, Alessandro Algardi, Pinturicchio, Andrea Bregno, Guillaume de Marcillat and Donato Bramante.
The Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican (Italian: Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano), or simply St. Peter's Basilica (Latin: Basilica Sancti Petri), is an Italian Renaissance church in Vatican City, the papal enclave within the city of Rome. Designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter's is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and the largest church in the world. While it is neither the mother church of the Catholic Church nor the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, St. Peter's is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic shrines. It has been described as "holding a unique position in the Christian world"and as "the greatest of all churches of Christendom". You will see the Basilica from the outside and your tour guide will tell you all about its history.

This was a delightful morning in Rome. We are both fans of Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons, one of us had read the book and one of us had seen the film. Irene had done both several times and was able to accommodate our different levels of knowledge easily. In fact, she was able to give an easy refresher on the story. She was full of knowledge about them both and Rome itself. She knew so many little details that made Angels & Demons come alive. And fascinatingly, she was able to detail all the changes the film makers made when filming in the basilicas. Irene also made Rome come alive with knowledge of water fountains, coffee bars - she even helped us to buy a leather jacket. We walked at an easy pace - the three hours passed very quickly. The biggest take home for me was how even some of the more modest basilicas were filled with beauty and rich history - don't confine your visit to the more famous sites. Irene was a fantastic guide who was warm, engaging and passionate about her city. She has certainly made our morning one memorable and one of the highlights of our trip. We would definitely recommend his tour and especially Irene. Thank you lots from Stepehen and Max
Do not waste your time with this one. The tour operator cancelled on the morning of our tour while we were walking to the pickup spot. They previously requested that we move our tour to a different date, though we were unable to accommodate due to other tours booked during our time in Rome. They provided the vague excuse of “operational issues”, though we assume it was because we were the only two people booked on the tour (though the tour operator denies this). We would highly recommend City Wonders, as our experiences with that company were great. Our tour operators were reliable, professional and knowledgeable. In particular, we enjoyed their Crypts and Catacombs tour.
Very well presented & interactive, guide shared insight into the book & differences from the movie. Good pace & recap at the end was helpful
Irene was a great guide and a good human being. I really enjoyed the detailed explanation. She was prepared with pictures if a part of a sight was not available, which made the whole experience feel complete. She also shared tons of historical details about each place and many others along the way. Be ready to see Rome through another lense!
Tour guide was 30 minutes late with no prior notification
Our guide was great. She was knowledgeable and flexible, catering the tour to our needs and interests. We had a great time and I would highly recommend her!
Do not waste your time …. For the price of this tour you get to go into only one church , then walk to a few fountains. Finally to St. Peter’s square . Guide didn’t talk about the movie/ book much . Meet us late and as soon as we got near St. Peter’s the tour was done …. This was at noon …tour says we would return to place we started … also completely skipped one of the churches that was listed as a stop. 4 hour tour that was done in 2 1/2 hours. Very disappointed:( This felt very much like a scam.
Out travel guide Irene was wonderful. She was so knowledgable and nice. Had a wonderful day with her.
Felice was a walking encyclopedia of Angels & Demons facts. We really enjoyed his tour!!! And, he went above and beyond to help us when we had a hard time finding a cab due to a transit strike. Awesome guy!!
We met Felice and were the only people on the tour. We had a fabulous 3 hours walking to the main sites in the book/ film. Felice's knowledge was amazing. He explained how the book is based on some truths, some myths and some pure fiction and explained how each site was used during the film. He also told us stories and history about Rome and the Catholic church. We asked loads of questions and he answered them all. A brilliant day and would definitely recommend.
We had a great walk through Rome taking in the sites and leaning about their importance. The ties to the movie were not as strong as we hoped for was a very interesting walking tour.
This was such a great walking tour. We loved all the references to the novel and movie, but simply getting to spend the morning with a local in such a small group was awesome. We asked a million and one questions, and Felice was very knowledgeable and courteous. It was like hanging out with a friend. He even took us to his favorite espresso bar.
What a great tour and experience! We had an excellent time and gained great insight and knowledge. Our tour guide Felice was so friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend this tour.
Very interesting. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I would highly recommend and even do it again based on her knowledge and pass for Roman history.
Luisa was an excellent tour guide. She let us know that one of the churches wouldn’t be available for the tour but would lead us to another one that had interesting information to share. Luisa was also very considerate of the two little kids in the group.
All of the places that were in the movie and mentioned in the novel. Federico was very knowledgeable about so much. He was cognizant of the heat and my wife's inability to keep up due to the heat. I would give this 5 stars buy most of the fountains were shutoff and undergoing repairs so we had to view them through a hole in the fence and they were inoperable.
Our guide was outstanding. He let us decide the pace and length-we were really tired because we flew in from the US and then did the tour. Our guide helped us get a taxi to go to our hotel. Everything was smooth. We loved him!
Everything was ok, unfortunately 2 importante point was closed, Santa María de la Vitoria and chinesa del popolo, so we couldn’t complete the visit
Our tour guide was AMAZING! She was so thorough, easy to understand, and answered any questions we had. There is a good amount of walking, but the sites make it totally worth it. I highly recommend and would do this again!
The tour cost more than we expected as it was advertised in USD and we didn’t realise this until the payment was processed (we booked the tour in Rome). It was listed as a 4 hour tour, but was only 2 1/2 hours. Louisa was very knowledgeable but given that it was promoted as visiting sites from the angels and demons movie, there wasn’t as much linking of sites to the movie as we thought there would be.
Elisa was very well versed with the topic and the area. Would take another tour with her in a heartbeat. Well done.
A bit expensive for a few stops with few entrances to sites included... but the guide Luisa was knowledgeable and fun.
The story about Mr Tikka and never to talk bad about the Pope. The story of Romes most expensive escort and the face of Mary.
We arrived early for our tour and the guide never showed up. Now fighting for a refund. Very disappointed in this tour operation
Luisa was fantastic! Knowledgeable about the locations and a great story teller. It ended up just being my husband and me on the tour, and it was such a special experience!
The guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. The only thing was she walked way to fast and it was difficult to keep up.
More than just Angels and Demons. Luisa was extremely knowledgeable about history, art and architecture also. She added other sites on the way. We would definitely recommend the tour and Luisa.
We had a wonderful day with Louisa on our walking tour through Rome. She was vey knowledgeable and easy to understand. We can’t wait to do another tour.
So cool seeing the places from the book in real life! Our guide was very knowledgeable and kind, but do be prepared for a lot of walking.
We did the tour with Anestis Pavlidis. A great man who knows not only everything about Bernini and the Angles and Demons story, but also about Rome in general. He took the time to tell us more about the things the tour wasn't about and answer all our questions. I wish I could call Anestis in every city I visit.
The tour was extremely informative. The guide, Pavlios (sp?), picked us up at our hotel and we walked all around Rome. He showed us all the connections to the movie, Angels and Demons and explained the history and the significance. Not only did he describe the movie and the scenes but he gave us information of other points of interest in Rome. Thank you.
We chose the tour due to the many destinations you see along the way. Lorie was a wonderful and knowledgeable tour guide! She not only educated us on the Angels and Demons landmarks, but also gave so many great insights into the cultural and historical landmarks of her beloved hometown. Lorie also was very nice and was easy to talk to throughout the day. Nothing was too much of a hassle and her knowledge base is through the roof!
Extraordinary and amazing 4 hours experience for this activity, Our guide lady was Lorie that was excellent & very knowledgeable from all history and landmarks of this incredible tour! My kids loved her she was extremely fun and friendly, we definitely recommend her a guide person and this activity to do to all the tourists from all over the world! Thank you Romaetravel!
We enjoyed a half-day private tour led by Lorie, who was amazing. She is very personable and knowledgeable about Rome, and she provided tons of insider tips from a local's perspective. I would highly recommend this tour (specifically with Lorie) to anyone. I wish we had booked more tours with her!
The tour was excellent and it really was a private tour as me and my son were the only customers. It included all the Dan Brown locations in the book of that name, though not entrance into the Castel Sant Angelo which had it's own tour and fee. The guide was very good and she included much more information that expected. I would definitely recommend it.
Very interesting and well thought through Have a good combination of true facts about Rome and its churches with comparison to some of the book’s poetic licence
Our group of 9 people aged 10 to 69 were the only people on this tour (we were the whole group). We were told to walk 2 miles to the first waypoint, the agency would *NOT* provide the bus (but, bus pickup and dropoff was advertised!). One of our group chose not to walk 2 miles just to start the tour, another dropped out about 1/3 of the way feeling sick. The Angels and Demons tour we took 3 years ago was *MUCH BETTER.,* this one failed miserably.
This was an excellent tour. Lorie is a very knowledgeable guide. Her English is absolutely perfect with no accent at all, very easy to understand. Lorie incorporated deep knowledge of Roman history into Dan Brown imagination during all the stops of the trip.
Although the tour was ok, it was not as advertised, missed parts of the tour out and the tour guide was not accurate when talking about the film, had to correct him on numerous occasions. Wasn’t worth the money which was paid for the tour, as so much was missed out!!

This was a pretty weak, disorganized tour. Our tour guide whose name I can't remember was pretty checked out. It almost felt like he was doing this tour against his will. Don't get me wrong: He knew a lot about the subject matter not the book/movie so much, but definitely about the history. He was just a real bummer to be around for three hours.

As someone else mentioned, this tour involves a LOT of walking...and you don't necessarily follow the book/movie as it occurred. Given the logistics of it all and how far apart the locations are spread out, I can understand why the tour is given this way. However, as someone else who reviewed this tour mentioned, one of the sites that we were supposed to visit was temporarily closed. So, we went there, saw that it was closed, drove to one of the other locations, then drove back to the closed location. It makes for a lot of downtime in between, and a lot of unnecessary driving/walking. And, really, it would have been great if he'd checked out the sites beforehand to make sure that they'd be open at the time that we'd be visiting them.

I honestly can't recommend this tour. You'd really be better off visiting the sites on your own, at your own pace...maybe over the span of a couple of days.

Our Guide Vittoria was fantastic! Very accommodating. It was just my group and some had to walk slower than others. She did a great job making sure we were always together. She was very soft spoken so I would recommend a head set for the group. It was hard to hear her when we were walking. This was FOR SURE a walking tour. Pretty much NON-STOP walking for 3.5-4 hours so just me ready for that!
Thank you for a great tour!

Chiara was absolutely amazing - we felt like we were with a friend and not a generic tour. Good information about all the sites. Highly recommend.

Fantastic tour!! The guide was obviously a fan of the book and movie and we were lucky enough to have a private tour as no one else had booked that time/day

This tour was AMAZING! We set up this tour for the morning time on the day we flew out from Rome. Flaminia was our tour guide and is the best we have ever had! We have taken several day tours around the world and this was the most fun we have had. It didn’t feel like a tour but like we were family!

Tour guides were knowledgeable, but this should have NEVER been a walking tour for people our age, and there is no way it should have been offered on a Sunday, when churches are closed for mass! Advertise it correctly as a WALKING tour! Don't offer it on a SUNDAY! Also, you should have some sort of diagram for the participants on how it all fits together. And, the timeline was skipped as part of the tour. We learned afterwards from a later guide that it the timeline was near our first stop.

It was cool to see the sites we saw in the movie. My fiancé read the books so he really enjoyed this tour. we were picked up from our hotel but not dropped back off. Our tour was changed to the late afternoon so we had to figure out how to get back to our hotel from the Vatican at night.

I can't even begin to tell you how bad this tour was. Do not waste your time or money! First, I had this tour scheduled for Friday morning at 9:30 am. I was contacted on Wednesday afternoon to reschedule for Thursday morning, which was impossible since we did not arrive until Thursday at noon. Then on Thursday, I was contacted if we could reschedule for Saturday morning, which we could not. We had another tour already scheduled for Saturday morning. We only had a short time in Rome and I had specifically scheduled out each tour for maximum time. We were told that Friday was not possible, so therefore we were left with only Saturday afternoon for the tour, since we were leaving on Sunday. We felt like we didn't have a choice at that point and we had one person in a group that is a huge Dan Brown fan, so we wanted to do the tour.

We were picked up at 3 pm at our apartment on Saturday afternoon in a van. We had to go pick up another group of 4 and then they split us up into two vans, 4 in each. The van we were in had a terrible smoke odor. The first church we went to was holding a wedding and we could not enter, so we got back in the van, then the second church we went to was also holding a wedding and we could not enter the church. My husband at this point said are we on the 4 weddings and a funeral tour. HA! So for the first hour and a half, we were in a van in traffic going place to place that we could not even enter. When we finally went to St. Peter's square, my husband and I just left the tour. I was so over it. My aunt and uncle, who is a huge Dan Brown fan, continued on the tour, until it got to the point that they still had not seen everything scheduled for the tour by 6:30 pm and asked to be taken back to the apartment. It was a huge disappointment! I feel like if they had left our tour at 9:30 am on Friday morning like originally scheduled then we would not have run into all the weddings and could have possibly had a better tour.

This was THE best tour i've ever been on. Having never been to Italy and a huge fan of Angels and Demons, I came across this tour with Viator. I read through the reviews and seeing such a positive rating, I decided to give it a try. WOW! It was over 100F that day and although our hotel was outside of the pickup zone, they sent a car to get us. They also drove us to three of the points of our tour to keep us from melting, which made it so much more enjoyable. I do not think we could have survived walking for 4 hours in that kind of heat. Our guide, Victoria, was not only knowledgable about the movie but extremely enthusiastic about sharing all of the secrets with us. Her ability to make it an interactive tour where we had to find the angels and identify the elements at each destination made it so much fun. It became a game of sorts and a who can come up with the answer first!. Her knowledge of Rome and the extra history bits she shared along the tour are pieces of knowledge we never would have gained doing it on our own. Absolutly LOVED this tour and would ABSOLUTELY recommend it to anyone coming to Rome. Thank you Victoria for an amazing experience I will never ever forget!

My daughter and I went on this tour. We were met by our guide, Angelica and a driver at our hotel. They took us to the Pantheon and we then began our tour. It was amazing. There was a good bit of walking, but the time went by so fast as we attempted to find the clues. Along the way we learned many things about Rome that we would not have otherwise known. Our guide was friendly, courteous, energetic and fun. This was my third trip to Rome and I believe I learned more about Rome.....and of course, Angels and Demons..... than I had learned in my earlier trips.. A very educational, fun and pleasant day with a very informative tour guide. I was impressed and pleased. I recommend this tour!
