MIKE our tour guide of 4 was absolutely amazing. He took his time with us and describe Romes history perfectly. He discussed interesting topics as well. He worked with us to plan a little different than the normal itinerary. The path was a little rough on the parents so we ended the Appian path early and did different roads which I thought were perfect if not better than the Appian trail. Views and the lake were beautiful. Food at a local restaurant was very tasty. If there is an option I would’ve definitely request Mike! 11/10 experience!

What an amazing experience! A lifetime memory to be sure! Between the mind blowing surroundings and knowledge you are following in the footsteps of Romans, soldiers, citizens, merchants and slaves throughout centuries- and the gorgeous landscape and scrumptious food- this is an experience not to be missed. Our guides Alessio and Adriano were superb and Alessio shared so much history, taking time to show us history you would breeze by if cycling on your own. Worth every cent and more! Quick note for understanding the type of ride this is-you need to be comfortable on uneven roads, rocks and more rocks, and navigating through some traffic areas. If you’re looking to feel the Italian landscape, history and earn an amazing lunch- this trip is for you!
Even the best guide cannot guarantee a risk-free adventure! Emmanuele was a wonderful guide. This was the first time my wife and I had used e-bikes. He explained how they worked and allowed us time to acclimate using them. He also went into detail explaining the terrain, which on the Appian Way, although flat was paved with large irregular shaped lava pavers. What he couldn’t control for was the fact that my shoes kept sliding off the pedals [I usually use cages and bike shoes]. Shortly before we transitioned to a more traditional surface, I bounced off a paver, and with both feet sliding off the pedals, causing me to land onto the ground and fall under the bike. Fortunately, I only suffered some cuts and bruises. We were able to walk to a bar, to get washed and bandaged up. We then proceeded to continue by car to the Castello Gandolfo and then ultimately returning to Rome by train. Throughout the trip, Emmanuele was supportive, helping us to safely accomplishing our goal of getting to the Castello. Despite the fall, it was a positive experience overall. Our only recommendation to prospective clients would be to have some experience before e-biking on the Appian Way, and wear proper foot gear. The lesson learned however is, this should not be your “first rodeo” on an e-bike!!
We had an absolutely fantastic day cycling from Rome along the Appian Way to Castel Gandolfo and back, and Alessio made the experience unforgettable. His knowledge of the history, culture, and landmarks along the route was exceptional, bringing the ancient Appian Way to life with fascinating stories and insights. He struck the perfect balance between being informative, engaging, and fun, while always making sure everyone in the group felt comfortable and safe. The ride itself was beautiful, with stunning scenery, ancient ruins, and spectacular views around Lake Albano. Alessio’s enthusiasm for Rome and its history was contagious, and his passion for sharing it made the experience so much more meaningful. If you’re looking for a unique way to experience Rome beyond the typical tourist sites, we highly recommend this tour—and especially Alessio as your guide. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Italy!
“Everything was amazing! Emmanuel was a fantastic guide and made the bike tour unforgettable!”We highly recommend this tour
Fun and informative day rain or shine! Great guide! The aqueduct park was sensational. A few more busy roads than we were expecting as we did the full tour up to Gandolfo and the lake but all and all a wonderful day!
We had an absolute perfect ending to our Roman holiday spending the day with our guide Emanuele biking the Appian Way to Castle Gandolfo. The bikes were quality e-bikes and very comfortable. Emanuele was super knowledgeable and a great guy. We highly recommend this tour!
Alessio was a wonderful guide. He has a great knowledge of the history of the Appian Way and the Roman Aqueduct. We thoroughly enjoyed the guided bike tour to Castel Gandolfo. The bikes are good quality e-bikes and Alessio took the time to make sure that we were comfortable. Thank you Alessio for a wonderful day!
Alessio is great! We had a wonderful day on Via Appia and in Castel Gandolfo. Alessio is very knowledgable and explained everything we saw and we asked for. Thank you, dear Alessio, and we will return for the next tour with you!
Our guide Alessio made this a great experience. We really enjoyed his knowledge and insight of the history.
Was a fun ride, I would tell you it’s note for the novice or people who do not ride a bike, a little difficult ride but awesome if your a rider
Emanuele was an absolutely outstanding guide for a wonderful trip. My fiancé and I enjoyed every bit of it. Castillo Gandolfo was gorgeous and the ride was super fun. 5/5 would absolutely recommend and we would do another tour.
Alessio was a terrific guide. Started on the magical Appian Way (sometimes bumpy) , then biked up to Castel Gandolfo (not difficult), and had the most wonderful lunch at Arte e Vino next to the Pope’s home. Highly recommend this tour!
That was am amazing tour! The bikes, the tour, the choice of restaurant and of course our guide Alessio: all excellent! Highly recommended!
Alessio was great! Even though i was the only customer that day, he told me about the history at length, took me to extra historic locations, waited while I swam in Lago Albano, and took some great photos of me! Thanks for a fabulous day on the Appian Way!
Emanuele with “bicycle Roma” took us for a great ride today on the Appian Way to Castle Gandolfo. The e-bicycles had good suspension and handled the road well. The countryside , towns and lake are beautiful and have so much history as explained by Emanuele! Highly recommend to spend a day outside of Rome on this tour. We loved it !
Riccardo was a great guide. Explained all the details of the sites. I really enjoyed it. 100% recommended! Also, the biking part is a bit challenging, but doable.
Our ride was AMAZING!!! Our guide Manfredi was the best! He was so knowledgeable and informative, while also making sure that our daughters, who are 12 and 16, were safe throughout throughout the journey! We were able to take the longer full circle tour which really helped us to see many areas that we would have never been able to see on foot! For someone who has never taken an e-bike, it was such a wonderful way to see the area while still having a physically involved experience of being in nature. The bikes really made a ride that would have been challenging much more easy and enjoyable! Manfredi also allowed us to take periodic stops and took such care and time to explain different areas of interest as we progressed along the way. He took some amazing photos of us in such beautiful areas which we will cherish as family memories forever. We cannot say enough good things about this experience, and we would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to have an experience learning the history of ancient Rome in a beautiful and memorable way.
This is a must do! Great experience! Great ride and delicious food and beer afterwards. Would absolutely do again! So much to see.
We had a truly amazing day on this tour, and we can’t recommend it enough! We started off at the meeting point and got ourselves set up with the e-bikes, which were super helpful and easy to use. We then started by heading up the Appian way, while our guides Alessio and Marco provided interesting insights into the history of the road. We stopped for a coffee at a cafe before heading off again towards Albano. There, we stopped at the lake for a picturesque and refreshing swim (the backdrop of the mountains was amazing) , before climbing the hill towards Castel Gandolfo. The township was beautiful and we took a lot of pictures of view of the lake from above. We were also able to sample some local wine from the region. We then cycled back down to stop for some lunch before cycling back to the start point via the Roman Aqueducts. This tour was a perfect mix of informative, beautiful, and fun. It was made even more amazing by our wonderful guides, Alessio and Marco, who were knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and fun to chat to! If you are an active person and want to explore some beautiful townships outside of the city, then this tour is for you!
What an amazing day in the country side of Rome. The Appian way is full of artifacts and the countryside is beautiful. Our guide was great for gear and biking advise in hills and bumpy areas, as well as being full of facts.
Today was our second day in Rome and was definitely one of our favorites. Our guide, Emmanuel, was the most amazing person you could ever ask for on a tour. He was so friendly, outgoing, fun, and knowledgeable. We rode the Appian Way all the way to the Castle Gandolfo, and to say it was beautiful was an understatement. We got beauty, awe, and history all compacted into one ride. Our bikes were super nice and lasted the whole day on battery which made it super easy. If you have to go somewhere, please choose here.
Was a great ride and I appreciated having the electric bikes today as it was a long climb up the hill to Gandolfo. But anyone in decent condition could do this ride. Our guides were thoughtful and helpful and took us to an amazing local spot for lunch. The Appian way is bumpy, and this was more like a mountain bike experience than a road bike experience.
It is an amazing tour especially if you love cycling! This unique experience lets you explore Rome away from the usual crowds. You’ll ride along the scenic Appian Way, enjoying beautiful lake views and numerous historical sites. The friendly and informative guide lead me to hidden spots, delicious local pasta, and try unique new wine. It felt like a little adventure since it was my first time riding a gravel bike off-road. Highly recommended for a different and memorable Roman experience!
This was a very fun day. The staff started by making sure we had helmets that fit and the right sized bikes with the seats set correctly. The ride itself was a world away from the hustle and bustle of Rome. We stopped a number of times to learn about the history of the Appian Way. The staff was happy to take pictures of us on many parts of the ride. They also called ahead for a lunch reservation for a table overlooking the lake. It was enchanting. Such a gorgeous view. On the way back we saw an aqueduct and learned some more history. We were a bit sore but had a great time. Bus 660 is so convenient too, it drops you off right across the street. Thanks for a great day!
Private e-bike tour from Rome to Castel Gandolfo and back by bike (about 35mi) was a perfect balance of history, scenery and terrain variety. Emmanuel is a personable, fun and patient guide who truly shares with his guests adding to our experience (we met his mom, dog and friend!). His recommendation for lunch was one of the best meals of our trip! The ride on the Appian Way and via Francigena to Castel Gandolfo and back through the aqueduct park was more serene and authentic than we expected, as well as perfectly challenging for my family. I highly recommend this break from Roman congestion to the countryside on this route. Thank you Bicycle-e!
A fun and physically exhausting day of biking. There were only four people in our group, and our guide Emanuelle was fantastic! We’re very glad we did this, but we didn’t quite know what we were getting into: 1) The ride is bumpy and strenuous, you have to stay very focused to make sure you don’t fall. We’re 39 and 49 years old, in good shape and bike regularly. This was not an easy ride for us. Significant portions were on roads. So unless you’re fairly seasoned and confident biker, this probably isn’t for you. 2) There were no bike bags, so be ready to have your backpack with essentials on your back. Bring water and sunscreen! 3) In retrospect, we would have preferred more stops along the trail, to read about the ruins and drink water. Felt rushed to get to the top. 4) We opted to ride back rather than take the train, but wish that we’d walked around and explored Castel Gandolfo instead and took the train. 5) The ride back was scarier than up, with mountain-bike-level trails, steep downhills and 2 miles on a very busy road that didn’t feel safe. Also everyone’s bikes had an issue on the way down (brakes, batteries, chains) - thankfully our guide was able to fix most of it. Overall, this was a fantastic way to unplug and forget all about everything. The scenery was stunning! Just wish we’d had more time to enjoy it and a bit less actual biking.
Amazing bike ride from Rome to Gandolfo. Emanuel was an amazing tour guide who was full of knowledge !
Amazing one of a kind experience! Via Appia Antica, riding through beautiful Marino and by Lake Albano, to the top of Castel Gandolfo, back down and through the Park of Aqueducts. Our guide, Emanuele, was knowledgeable, adventurous, and made it a perfect day!
I booked this tour because I wanted to bike to Castel Gandolfo but didn’t feel confident enough to do it myself. Emanuele (not sure if spelling right) knew the way well and stopped to point out interesting things we would have missed. My husband thought path was easy but if you’re not so great on a bike (like me) the beginning of the appian way can be challenging (where it’s very very bumpy). The restaurant we ate at in Castel Gondolfo was amazing and has a series of tunnels/chambers underground you can eat in. The countryside is amazing. This was our favorite thing we did in Rome. Only area for improvement - the ebikes themselves aren’t in great shape.
Wow what a trip. The e-bikes weren’t what I expected though. They only assist and it is quite a workout. But happy we did it
It was a fun and adventurous day outside the stifling crowds of central Rome, but packed with history and anecdotes… everyone was relaxed and extremely friendly…we reached CastelGandolfo and had lunch in a very quirky restaurant with a labyrinth of cellars and interesting memorabilia.. my highlight of the day was riding through the area of the aqueducts.. Emanuel had a deep and passionate knowledge of the area, but most of all he was super friendly and helpful… thanks for one of the most memorable days in Rome.
We did the 8 hour bike tour from Appia Antica up to Castel Gandolfo and Lake Albano, which is one of the longest tours they offer. It was absolutely worth it, and an amazing day. Our guide Emanuele went above and beyond to make the experience special and smooth. It can definitely be a workout, but with the electric assist bikes, you can also make it much easier, so you choose how much you sweat (we went on a sunny day in early July, there was plenty of sweat). Even with the electrical assist, it requires some biking skills and physical ability, but it’s absolutely worth it!. What really made the trip special was Emanuele's guidance. At his suggestion, instead of waiting in line to get food at the overcrowded restaurants at the lake, we got a great local porcetta sandwich beforehand and brought it up to the lake with us. Since we didn't have to wait for food, in the ~hour we had at the lake, instead of waiting for service, instead we were able to rent a paddle boat (with Emanuele's help to expedite) and eat our sandwiches in the middle of the beautiful azure blue volcanic lake! An amazing experience. I also jumped in because the water is so clear and perfect. Since we made good time on the way up to Castel Gandolfo, on the way back we also went through the Aqueduct Park. It's even more beautiful than the Appia Antica! I'm so grateful to Emanuele for the experience, and I'm also grateful to Rome and to Italy for doing such a great job preserving their nature and their history. One thing to note is that our tour was on a Sunday and I think that helped reduce the number of cars we encountered.
This is a great day out. We did the Appian Way cycle to Castelgandolfo Lake with Emanuele as our guide. The Appian Way is incredibly picturesque. There is some rough terrain, but the ebikes provided are really good, with fat tyres to handle it. When we reached Castelgandolfo they had organised a table for us at a local restaurant with the most incredible views out over the volcanic lake. We decided to cycle back as well which gave us the opportunity to visit the aqueduct park on the way back which is definitely worth it if you’re interested in ancient Rome - it’s almost unbelievable that they are so grand and still standing. Emmanuele our guide was friendly, knowledgable and a very good ride-leader with clear signalling and good safety awareness. I wasn’t sure what the water situation would be like but there are multiple drinking fountains along the way where you can refill your bottle. I think this ride is best suited to confident cyclists - we loved it and it really made our weekend.
View from Gondolfo, great ride along the Appian way, nothing to much trouble for the guys and they are flexible enough to change parts of it depending on what you want to do
I ride to castle Gandolfo by bicycle with Alessio. We ride via Apia Antica... I can say it was a fantastic experience. Appia antica is an open air museum and Alessio gave me a lovely tour of ruins and tombs. I also rented the bike from Alessio himself. I highly recommend this tour, and suggest to not miss the opportunity while in Rome, it would be a great memory. I myself might repeat the tour in April again.
There probably isn’t a better way to tour the Appian way. Our tour guide Alessio was great! Very friendly, helpful, funny and knowledgeable. We learned so much about the history of the famed road. The excursion included a jaunt to picturesque Castelgandolfo. We had never heard of this lake and it was a amazing! Wow! What a beautiful place! There was the option to take a swim in the lake, which half of our party indulged in. The water was clear and not too cold. We sat and enjoyed the views, which included the Pope’s summer residence. We continued the trek up to a quintessential Italian village where we had what can only be described as “the best meal ever” at Arte e Vino. The courses just kept coming, one more delicious than the last. The group shared a bottle of divine wine as well. Side note: the restaurant was incredibly cute and quirky- would return. Finally we caught the train back to Roma Termini station and rode back to the original meeting point. As we said our goodbyes we felt like we were leaving a friend. I have to agree with another reviewer- this is not super easy for beginners, but is doable.
Our family wanted our most recent visit to Roma to be more experiential as opposed to visiting the “must sees.” So we set out on our adventurous bike ride! Our tour guide Alex was so awesome! He’s very knowledgeable about the history of Roma and very fit! (We are still amazed at how many miles he bikes everyday!!!) He’s also an amazing Photographer! He sent us photos and a video of our entire day! So wonderful to have those memories! Anyway, we spent the day on our bikes riding along some of the most beautiful areas in and out of Roma. We ended the bike tour in a small village over looking a beautiful lake. The restaurant Alex chose was superb, Arte Vino. We were delighted to have a tour of the eclectic restaurant and a wine tasting in their wine cellar. The large amounts of food they served was also delicious! On our way back to Roma, we were able to experience the transit system by hopping on with our bikes! Super easy! Then we ended the tour by riding through the beautifully lit streets of Rome at dusk where we were able to get a photo in front of the Colosseum. My family certainly had an experience to remember. We would recommend this tour to those who want to see beyond museums, get some exercise, love good food, and the outdoors. I must also disclose, this particular trip is not for beginner bike riders.
Great, for those who like biking and are interested in Roman history. And it doesn't even need to be in good shape (e-bikes).
Alessio a security! Won't let you down
After my mom and I have been to Rome many times, we wanted to Enterprise something that would take place off the beaten tourist path. Even though Via Appia Antica is far from an insider tip, the tour with Alessio has brought us exactly what we wanted: With a lot of charm and his friendly and funny manner, he not only brought us closer to this historic street and its history, but also gave us an incredibly beautiful and unforgettable day. After the meeting we went on foot to the bikes we had found in good condition - mountain e-bikes, which have already ridden along Via Appia a few times, but gave us a lot of fun and mastered the bumpy slopes. Arriving at Castel Gandolfo we enjoyed a lunch at the lake and also went out for a coffee break or two. In general, the relaxed nature of Alessio made us feel like we had all the time in the world and we were able to completely leave everyday life behind and switch off. To our delight, we then also rode back on the bikes, which we had preferred over the train ride. Afterwards it turned out that we could be there on a tour of the cave, which was exciting and pretty cool. An all-round perfect day! 100% recommendation and thank you Alessio for the unforgettable day!!
We had a great experience with cycling on fun trails and ancient roads along Via Appia. Our guide was very good at informing and telling the story along the way, and he adjusted the speed of the cycling so that it was possible to maintain a higher pace than on a regular group trip. The bikes were good, electric, off-road bikes. Recommended, and especially as a private trip!
friendly and helpful staff. bike in good condition. quality-price of the service offered very good. good food.
Helen and I had a great day. Cycling on the oldest road in the world is fantastic. With good e-bikes it was easy even though I am 82 years old. Our guide was exceptional. Experience to live! GÉRALD
