Catacombs are a must see. So amazing. So much history. Our tour guide was priest from India who was so informative. Our driver picked us up at our hotel and pointed out many sights along our way to the catacombs. We even stopped at church of St Paul. Important to note that shorts above knees not permitted in church but ok in catacombs. Also make sure you check with driver if he allows food and beverage in van. If not give yourself time to consume after visiting catacombs. before meeting driver.

The Porta San Sebastiano, originally known as Porta Appia, is one of the largest and best-preserved gates in the Aurelian Walls, which encircle ancient Rome. This impressive structure marks the beginning of the historic Appian Way, Rome’s “Queen of Roads,” and serves as a stunning reminder of the city’s ancient defensive systems. A Majestic Entrance: Marvel at the grandeur of this massive gate, which dates back to the 3rd century AD and was a critical part of Emperor Aurelian’s fortifications. Learn how Porta San Sebastiano served as a key military defense point, guarding the road that led to the south of Italy.
Uncover the secrets of early Christianity with a guided group tour of the Catacombs of San Callisto, one of Rome’s most significant underground burial sites. Established in the 2nd century, these catacombs served as the official cemetery of the Church of Rome and are a testament to faith, history, and architecture. Explore Ancient Underground Passageways: Wander through a labyrinth of tunnels stretching over 12 miles, where popes, martyrs, and early Christians were laid to rest.
Walk in the Footsteps of Legends: Discover where Spartacus and his 6,000 followers met their tragic fate, and explore sites tied to iconic figures like Crassus and Commodus.
The Church of Domine Quo Vadis, also known as the Church of Saint Mary in Palmis, is a small yet profoundly significant chapel located on the legendary Appian Way. This humble site is steeped in Christian tradition and offers visitors a moment of reflection amidst the echoes of history. The Famous Encounter: According to tradition, this is where Saint Peter, fleeing persecution in Rome, encountered a vision of Christ. When Peter asked, “Domine, quo vadis?” (“Lord, where are you going?”), Jesus replied, “I am going to Rome to be crucified again.” Moved by the vision, Peter returned to Rome to face martyrdom. Sacred Footprints: Inside the church, you'll find a marble slab believed to bear the footprints of Christ, marking the spot of this divine encounter.
A Sacred Jewel of Early Christianity The Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls is one of Rome’s four major basilicas and a site of profound spiritual and historical importance. Built over the burial site of Saint Paul the Apostle, this grand basilica is a masterpiece of early Christian architecture and a serene escape from the bustling city center. Portraits of the Popes: Explore the long gallery adorned with medallion portraits of every pope, a unique feature that connects the church's history to the present day.

This tour was the perfect way to escape the heat and beat the crowds. Patrick, the driver, was a great guide, incredibly knowledgeable and happy to answer our questions. He took time to stop and explain key features on the Appian Way and sights in the city. He even stopped at the impressive Basilica Papale di San Paulo and gave us plenty of time to look round. It was a great addition to the tour. Catacombs were very impressive and thoroughly enjoyed by all the family. Thank you, Patrick for a great tour.
An absolutely brilliant way to see all that's offered on this tour! Our driver, Massimilliano, was amazing! Picked us up on time, the drive was great - so cool to travel on the Appian Way! The Catacombs were fantastic, as were the two churches. We had plenty of time at each stop. Bottles of water were provided, and Max pointed out restrooms if needed. Was so nice to have a cool drive vack to the hotel. The door to door service was perfect for the heat. Can't say enough how great this tour was!
The pickup was on time, the van was comfortable, Our guide Gaya was friendly, knowledgeable, fluent in English and was very pleasant. The driver Mohammed was also great. Had a very comfortable vehicle, a nice supply of cold water, knew the streets of Rome well, was very pleasant, and very timely. I wish all our tours were this good! Thanks Gaya and Mohammed.
This is not a Private Tour. It’s a private driver. Driver basically drove us around. We arrived at the catacombs - tickets were 10 euros - got us on a tour that was already in process. So we missed a lot of the history. Dropped us off at the next church said Ok you have 5 minutes. Not a word about the church and what to look for. Dropped us off at the next church and showed us the entrance. We had him drop us off at the Baths of Caracalla because what was the point of continuing. Ridiculously over priced and not described correctly.
The sites and history throughout this tour were exceptional 👌
The tour of the catacombs is excellent. Stefano was very knowledgeable. For some reason, the other tours had earpieces, and ours did not. I did not know if it was what we signed up for or just a general supply. The Appian Way was informative, and St. Paul's Cathedral was fantastic. St. Paul's was one of the highlights of Rome. It was such a beautiful church.
Patrick did a great job with our tour hes was prompt and explained everything well he was professional 5 stars
Really enjoyed learning about the catacombs! Giorgio made the ride there and back so interesting with facts and pointing out all the sites. He also took us to St. Paul’s Beyond the Walls and were able to go through the Holy Door there! An unexpected surprise! Would recommend!!
Disappointing Experience I recently took a tour with Stefano, who was super friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable. However, the overall experience was quite disappointing. The company car, meant for 4 adults, was small but clean. The real letdown was the visit to the catacombs. They were very disappointing, as we only saw holes in the wall and found out that the tombs had been moved. Essentially, these are empty catacombs with nothing to see but dirt, rock, and holes. Additionally, the catacombs themselves were not pleasant. The group was twice the size it should have been, and we could not hear the guide. There was a Spanish group that rudely pushed into the tail of our English group, creating a disappointing interaction and distraction. While the driver was good and drove us around to show us sights on the list, it felt more like a taxi service than a guided tour, especially at this price point. We paid $187.14 per person, which felt like a huge waste of money considering the actual tour of the catacombs was only 10 euros. In hindsight, I feel like we were taken advantage of. This experience taught me to do more research before spending a significant amount of money on a tour. I will definitely be more cautious in the future and would never book this tour again. Really disappointed. Per our request, he dropped us off at a great restaurant that he recommended instead of taking us back to the hotel. We absolutely loved this tour!
Appian Way was gorgeous. The catacombs were fascinating. Seeing the footprints of Jesus at Santa Maria of Palmis was a touching moment. St Paul’s Cathedral was breathtaking.
The catacombs your was very interesting. Full of new to me knowledge of the roman underground burials. We also visited St. Paul Basillica. Thst was beautiful and full of religious history. Well worth the time and money.
It was nice to have a private driver. He was friendly and informative. The tour guide was also good.
Catacombs were very disappointing, only saw holes in the wall. Driver was good. Took us around and showed us sights. Never would have booked this tour at $418. Really disapointed. The actual tour of the catacombs was only 10 euros. Feel like we were taken advantage of.
Driver was very knowledgeable and accommodating. It was beautiful to see and learn about the Catacombs.
Love the tours of this company. We had Patrick as our driver to the Catacombs and Appian Way. He was timely for the tour and helped us take some pictures on our phone too. We loved how he explained the rich history of Rome!
This underground labyrinth grave site was an experience to see. Our guide was very knowledgable. It was a great escape from the Summer heat as it was 15 degrees Celsius.
Our driver, Alessandro, was so great! He was friendly and personable, gave us a lot of great information on the places we visited. Per our request, he dropped us off at a great restaurant that he recommended instead of taking us back to the hotel. We absolutely loved this tour!
What a great experience! Stefano was super friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable. He spoke multiple languages and helped my father, who needs mobility assistance. The catacombs were totally unique and should not be missed. Be sure to ask a lot of questions! They have tours in dozens of languages. Beautiful churches and scenery. Don’t miss this one! Well-worth every penny.
This is a perfect way to see a beautiful part of Rome, especially during the warmer summer months! Lorenzo was a great driver/guide, and it was nice to have such easy transportation to the catacombs and the Appian Way during the heat of the day. He was accommodating with our request to stop and see a couple of churches near the catacombs and gave us lots of history of the area. It was a great afternoon!
Had the best tour guide (Patrick) he is with Top Tour Experiences , he was awesome came to our hotel and picked us up , and we saw more than just what the Tour was offering. He was very incredible with knowledge. I would just go through top tour and don’t go through the roundabout way to get to them. That’s who’s gonna come pick you up top tour so save your money and just go to Top Tour When we come back to Rome, that is only people we will do our excursion service is top tour. They’re worth it and it’s worth the private tour. It’s worth them coming to pick you up personally instead of having to go to a big area and look for them so top tour that’s my pic.
This tour advertises a different experience than the one that is offered. Private driver was excellent, but DO NOT BOOK THIS TOUR if you are trying to see the Appian Way, or the aqueducts. This tour was a transfer to the catacombs of Saint Callisxtus and the group tour which is available if you go there yourself. I do not recommend this tour. We have some mobility issues so we took this tour to insure our ability to visit this area with secure transportation. However, the high price point for this tour is not justified. Our driver was excellent and this is not a reflection of his service.
Our guide was excellent. We enjoyed the catacombs, Appian Way, & the St. Paul’s Basilica. We loved walking through the Holy Door. That was an added surprise. Driver was knowledgeable & friendly.
The driver was prompt with pick up from Hotel Diana Roof Garden. He was accommodating dropping us off at the Mamertine Museum after the tour. Very friendly and knowledgeable.
The driver was friendly but very hard to understand. The catacomb tour was very good and the guide spoke very good English, but no pictures were allowed inside which we weren't appraised of beforehand. Also,we had to purchase our own tickets, although the driver did reimburse us. He took me to a second set of catacombs, but they were closed. We were supposed to see two churches. One we drove by and just got a picture. The other, the basilica,we did stop at but it was closed also, so only outside pictures were taken. Maybe I was expecting something different, but the Appian Way was just a cobblestone street with buildings on both sides. I kind of thought it would be more of a massive road with fields on either side...maybe further out??? Overall, it seems the cost of the tour is just for a private car and not really a 'guided' tour, making it seem quite overpriced!
Stefano was a great driver and researched any questions he did not know the answer to while we visited the sites. Our guide at the Catacombs was incredible and Saint Paul Outside the Wall was a highlight.
Patrick is a very knowledgeable tour guide. He was polite and friendly, and showed us some sites in Rome that we’d not heard of before. He is a fount of information with the enthusiasm to go with it! His communication before the tour was also very good as he called to confirm on Easter Sunday, which went above and beyond the call of duty. Thanks Patrick!
The catacombs were interesting but the group size was a little to large st the site given the close quarters. The facility guide was hard to hear on many occasions. The graves themselves ws wuite interesting. The Appian Way was kind of special being the first paved road in the world. St. Paul’s Basilica (second only to St. Peter’s) is quite spectacular and visiting during the Jubilee made it even more special. Guide was excellent but the vehicle was too small for four people.
Our guide was wonderful. We learned a lot. The catacombs were very interesting. The guide on site was also terrific.
This was a good tour, worth the time and money. Our guide, Patrick, was knowledgeable and able to offer some interesting perspective as someone who is not originally from Italy but lives there now. We enjoyed seeing the catacombs and getting a better understanding of the story behind them.
Excellent tour. Our driver and guide Giorgio was superb. He arrived on time and on our way to the Catacombs provided an insight review of the various sights we were seeing. Following the Catacomb tour we dove along the Appian Way to a point where we could actually walk along the ancient paving stones. Then we proceed to St Paul’s Beyond the Walls where Giorgio provided an interesting and well informed commentary. Very much an unexpected benefit to the tour.
Patrick was great and did a good job explaining the history of the sites we visited. He even got us into some bonus sites. Would use this service again!
Amazing, scary to think about all the people buried there. It feels like you’re going back in time. Whole families buried together.
We were a little disappointed in this tour. We were picked up by our guide Alessandro in his vehicle that smelled strongly of cigarette smoke and taken to the catacombs of Calixtus. He bought our tickets and left us in line to go for the tour. Our guide there was excellent. He then drove us to see the old road of the Appian Way (a very short drive.) He offered to take us to see St. Paul's Outside the Walls which we did. We felt he was more of a driver than a tour guide. He had a lot of information to convey but his English was not as good as expected. I think the title of the tour is misleading and the cost was too much for what was offered.
Catacombs were very interesting and our guide for that portion of the trip was quite knowledgeable. Our driver/guide (Georgian) for the rest of the tour was awesome! He took us to St Paul’s Basilica, which was not on the description. First class experience.
Had a wonderful time with our guide for our first day in Rome! We started with a tour of the catacombs, then stopped by the Appian way, headed to Campitelli to overlook the forum, and ended in Piazza Navona. Our guide was extremely educated on the topics and would answer any questions we had! Truly recommend this!!!
Totally dependent upon the guide/driver. Transportation was a comfortable Mercedes for just the two of us. Guide/driver wasn't very communicative, offering descriptions of what we were passing only for the major sites.
Tour guide (Georgian) did an excellent job providing his knowledge of the area! Made the trip worth it for sure!
We cannot say enough about our guide George, he went above and beyond showing us beautiful places one would not normally see. Disappointed by the Catacombs they were just okay. Group way too big and very hard to understand when your English speaker doesn’t speak English very well. George took us to view other sites that you would normally not see. The first road which was amazing, an overview of the city, to a beautiful churches and through neighborhoods one would not see. The final was a church that was so breathtaking, detailed in marble, Gold and huge. Was able to see the door that was only ever been open for the Pope, needless to say that it was one of the most detailed and beautiful churches we have ever seen and it was so humbling. We cannot say enough good things about George and his knowledge and we will inform everyone we know that’s to visit to contact him if they truly want history. Thank you again George!
Had a great half day with Constantine. A very informative tour in a beautiful black Mercedes. Catacombs were so interesting. Constantine was so knowledgeable about all of Rome and had some great insights.
Over $700 euros for a party of five for a group tour that actually costs 10 euros according to the entrance ticket. It’s advertised as private tour but is just a private transfer which would not set you back $700 in a Uber. Save money take an Uber and do the group tour
Just seeing the catacombs was breathtaking. Patrick was a great tour guide showing just the two of us the city.
Brilliant. Our tour director, Patrick, picked us up from our hotel and explained many things on the way. He was friendly and knowledgeable. The tour was one of the best I’ve done in Rome. Thoroughly recommended
Patrick was very informative and eager to customize our private tour to make it personal to us. Made way to get us to very special places.
Patrick is a great guide we had a wonderful experience in the catacombs and along the Appian way. The catacombs are amazing and even though extensively restored, are well worth visiting especially with a guide as knowledgeable as Patrick
Our guide Patrick made our tour fun and informational. He stopped several times to take pictures. He even made a couple extra stops along our tour and gave us an interesting narrative on ancient Rome. Great tour!
We had a wonderful time with Patrick visiting the Catacombs of Callixto, the Appian Way, and a few other nearby sites. It was great to get off the beaten path to see some parts of Roman history that don't make it onto the city center tour itinerary and were not overwhelmed with tourists.
Victor was an awesome tour guide. Best we had from Viator. I really don't need to say anything further.
The catacombs tour was short, yet interesting. The 5 stars is for our tour guide, Giorgio, who was absolutely amazing. Since we had extra time, he took us to a few locations around Rome that were not filled with other tourists. He was so informative, professional and fun. Highly recommend their services.
The itinerary was seeing Catacombs of Saint Callixtus, Arcibasilica di San Giovanni in Laterano and Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. We went to the first one and we were told we have time to visit a couple of sites and because we had time so we visited 2 other sites then at the end of it we were told we were done and we did not even get to see what was on the itinerary
