Our tour guide was fantastic! Her knowledge of the Vatican and St. Peter's history was amazing. She was also very professional and friendly. Her nickname was "Big Mama". We would recommend her to anyone.

Itinerary
Your Private St. Peter’s Basilica Dome Climb Tour begins in St. Peter’s Square, where your expert private guide will introduce you to the remarkable architecture and symbolism of this iconic space.
Your guide will then lead you to the base of Michelangelo’s Dome, the tallest structure in Rome. After a short elevator ride and a brief climb, you’ll reach the interior dome gallery, where you can enjoy a breathtaking aerial view of the Basilica below. From here, continue your ascent of 281 steps to the very top of the Dome, where panoramic views of St. Peter’s Square and the city of Rome await.
After descending from the Dome, you will rejoin your guide and enter St. Peter’s Basilica, named after the first Pope and regarded as one of the most important churches in the Christian world.
The experience concludes with a visit to the Papal Tombs beneath the Basilica. This solemn and sacred site is the burial place of many popes throughout history and is traditionally believed to be the resting place of St. Peter himself, located directly beneath Bernini’s Baldacchino.

The climb was many steps but wasn’t as bad as we expected. There are a few places along the way to catch your breath if needed. Well worth the effort.
Pamen was a wonderful guide. She went at an appropriate pace for the varying needs of our family (ages ranging from 7 to 75) and was incredibly thoughtful and sensitive in how, when, and where we took breaks. The three adults in our group had been to St. Peter's before but I can safely say we each learned so much and were so impacted by the sheer grandeur of it. The views from the top of the Dome are spectacular. I could see the Pieta 100,000 times and it would still take my breath away.
Our tour guide, Giulia, is very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. She had the foresight to do the dome climb first before the heat of the day and crowds. It was hard to say goodbye. We wanted to take her to lunch! Highly recommend this tour.
Our tour with Constanza was excellent. She extremely knowledgeable, kind and pleasant to be with as we learned all about St. Peter’s Basilica. She stopped and took several pictures of my family and was engaging to my 5 and 11 year olds. It was a lovely time and we would easily recommend Livtours and Constanza to all!
Michela was an amazing guide! It felt like we were old friends! Truly she made our tour so special! Loved the dome climb and the visit to the papal tombs. We got so much great information. We had several tours on our Rome visit and this tour tied for our top experience!
Fabrizio was a fantastic guide Pleasant interesting and informative
Our guide Francesca is knowledgeable and patient, explaining everything in detail. She always has a friendly and welcoming smile that makes the experience extra special
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An unforgettable experience with Fabrizio – far beyond a standard tour I booked a private St. Peter’s Basilica, Dome Climb and Papal Tombs tour with LivTours for myself, my partner Matthias and my daughters Klara and Alina. It turned out to be one of the absolute highlights of our entire trip to Rome. From the very beginning, Fabrizio was exceptional. Although the entrance queue was much longer than expected and cost us additional time, he never appeared rushed or impatient. Instead, he used every minute constructively, gradually introducing the history of the Vatican, St. Peter’s Basilica and the city of Rome itself while we were waiting. What impressed us most was his remarkable ability to adapt the tour to his guests. Fabrizio is clearly extraordinarily knowledgeable about art history, architecture, religion, politics and European history, but he never lectures. He listens, engages and builds a genuine conversation. As the tour progressed, discussions naturally evolved from the Basilica itself to Renaissance art, Michelangelo, Raphael, the Reformation, the role of the Papacy in European history, the history of Rome and even contemporary developments within the Vatican. Every question was answered thoughtfully, intelligently and with great balance. What truly set Fabrizio apart was his ability to keep the experience both intellectually rich and wonderfully enjoyable. He has a natural talent for mixing historical insight with well-chosen anecdotes, subtle humour and memorable stories. The result was a tour that felt engaging and energetic throughout. The pace was perfect: never overwhelming, never superficial, and always responsive to the interests of the group. The Dome climb was spectacular, but what made it special was Fabrizio’s ability to bring the view to life. Looking out over Rome, history suddenly became tangible. Originally, we had booked a tour of roughly two and a half hours. In reality, Fabrizio spent almost four hours with us. At no point did we feel that he was watching the clock. His enthusiasm, generosity and genuine passion for the subject matter were obvious throughout. What made this experience truly exceptional was that it felt less like a guided tour and more like spending an afternoon with an exceptionally knowledgeable friend who loves Rome and enjoys sharing its history, culture and significance. Both of my daughters, aged 17 and 21, were fully engaged throughout the entire experience, which says a great deal. Fabrizio managed to create a conversation that appealed equally to adults and young people, history enthusiasts and first-time visitors alike. One thing we particularly appreciated was that the experience became highly interactive. The more questions we asked and the more we shared our own interests in history, art and European culture, the richer the discussion became. Fabrizio has the rare ability to meet guests at their level and turn a tour into a genuine exchange of ideas. We have taken many guided tours around the world. This was unquestionably among the very best. Thank you, Fabrizio, for your knowledge, your patience, your humour and your generosity with your time. You transformed a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica into an unforgettable intellectual, cultural and human experience. We cannot recommend Fabrizio and LivTours highly enough. With sincere gratitude, Anne, Klara, Alina & Matthias
Thanks Attlia! #1 tour guide at the Vatican Museums!
When we booked our tour, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I assumed it would feel rushed, crowded, and maybe even a little stressful trying to keep up with everything. I could not have been more wrong. From the moment we met Michela, she made us feel comfortable, welcomed, and genuinely cared for. Her kindness, warmth, and passion for what she does completely changed the experience for my wife and me. What could have easily been a hectic day turned into something smooth, relaxing, engaging, and unforgettable. Michela has an incredible way of making history, culture, and the entire experience come alive while still making you feel like you’re exploring with a friend rather than just being led through a tour. She was patient, thoughtful, informative, and always made sure everyone was comfortable and enjoying themselves. This was honestly one of the best tour experiences I have ever had anywhere. My wife and I left feeling grateful, inspired, and amazed by everything we saw and learned. That is entirely because of Michela and the care she puts into what she does. I truly cannot recommend her enough. If you get the chance to tour with Michela, consider yourself lucky. She turned what I expected to be “just another tour” into one of the highlights of our trip and a memory we’ll never forget. Thank you so much, Michela!!!
The tour was very informative starting in St. Peter’s square and proceeding into the Basilica, climbing up to the dome and descending into the floor with the papal tombs. We highly recommend it as we got one on one attention from our guide who was very knowledgeable and even asked an Italian priest to bless us which was beautiful. She did not rush us and the tour was longer than advertised it because there is so much to see and learn.
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Oksana . She was so knowledgeable about the history of St. Peter's Basilica and was able to answer all of our questions. We also enjoyed the climb to the top of the dome and were amazed by the views of the city. I highly recommend this tour with Oksana through LivTours. We did 3 tours with LivTours and all three were phenomenal.
The tour guide was excellent. He was fun and knowledgeable. The breakfast in the Vatican gardens was enjoyable and highly recommended.
Michaela and Paola were fantastic guides! They were very knowledgeable and enjoyable!
We absolutely loved this tour! We travelled with our three year old so knew we needed something highly guided, short time, high yield, and interactive. The tour did not disappoint. First, I greatly appreciated that LivTours sends out information in advance for the meeting spot and what to expect. This made it super easy to find our guide on the day of. Caterina was our guide and is exceptional. She was immediately helpful in ensuring we could take in our child backpack (water bottles are not usually allowed) and ensured a bathroom break from the onset. She provided a ton of information, answered all our questions, and genuinely seems passionate about her work. You know her and the tour company are great when all the Vatican staff know the guide by name and shared fond memories across the years. Besides the quality of the tour, the actual content was a perfect fit. I didn't realize what a trek the dome climb would be (our toddler ended up falling asleep so we carried her all the way up) - but it was 100% worth it. Stunning views while standing in an unparalleled historic space. Despite an easy thousand visitors present in the main hall and outside (during a "non- tourist season" time of year), there were far fewer that went up to the dome or down to the tombs - which made this visit feel even more special and unique. For a larger traveling family, yes this tour could feel pricey - but truly worth it. I loved this experience and so happy we did it!
Early entry private tours are absolutely worth it! We had a fantastic experience with Sara R.—she explained everything clearly, was easy to follow, and brought the history to life with her knowledge. We would have missed so many details without her guidance. Highly recommend!
Perfect tour and worth the price
Leonardo was such a knowledgeable tour guide! He took the time to answer all of our questions and his passion about the history of the Vatican literally made the trip not only memorable for a lifetime but an emotional journey - you felt his excitement!!! When we found out he studied with the archaeologist Margherita Guarducci I actually teared up! It made the visit even more powerful. Liv Tours provides the most amazing guides on their most amazing tours! They are on time and very personable! It is the only tour company I will use when it is in option in Europe!
This was a great experience. I highly recommend a private or small group. Our guide expertly got us in, engaged in lively and interesting stories, and adapted the program superbly to our family. This is such an important place with so much to see, which is why I think a private guide really pays off. The basilica is an enormous experience, and especially our children enjoyed the dome climb, which is quite high up with a fantastic view.
Everything with our tour of St Peter’s, the dome, and papal tombs was easy and effortless. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable and welcomed all our questions. She truly loved her profession and it showed in her attention to details and overall tour presentation.
Sarah was AMAZING! My children learned more for Sarah in two hours than they have in history class in five years ! She was so warm and friendly and explained everything so perfectly. I wish we knew how fantastic she was because we would have booked all of our tours with her. We will absolutely recommend her to anyone who is coming to Rome!
Barbara did an outstanding job combining her understanding of the times of the monument’s creation and Pope periods with passion…her sense of understanding the different periods of history with a very unique artistic touch made the tour a unique experience
Knowledgeable and insightful guide in Sandro, tailored schedule enlightening our pilgrimage experience! Overall a spectacular tour highly recommended!
Paola was AMAZING! We learned so much about every detail about St Peter's! All the information she has stored and was willing to share. She invited us to ask questions. Highly suggest this company and tour and for sure Paola!
Michela is, without a doubt, the best guide we could have ever hoped for during our tour of St. Peter's Basilica. What set Michela apart was her incredible ability to connect with everyone in our group. She answered every question with depth and patience, making complex architectural and historical concepts completely accessible. She paced the tour perfectly, allowing us time to absorb the grandeur without ever feeling rushed or overwhelmed by the crowds.
