Private Day Trip From Rome: Pompeii Positano And Amalfi

Pompeii was a must-see for us, and that portion of the excursion did not disappoint. Francesca, our Pompeii-specific guide that met us upon arriving in Pompeii, was exceptional. Pompeii was the highlight of this experience, by far. We specifically wanted a small group van tour that provided hotel pickup/dropoff vice being on a large bus. Our driver, Nicola, was phenomenal. He navigated the super narrow, winding roads of Positano and Amalfi with excellence and provided us terrific coffee/danish and restroom break stops along the way. We enjoyed that our time in Positano and Amalfi was free-time, so we could decide how we spent it and where we ate for lunch. There were two highly disappointing elements of our trip. First, we didn't understand the point/value of the "guide" who was with us for the entire van ride. She didn't share educational information or engage with us unless we asked her a question, and even then her answers were not informative. For example, when the couple with us asked approx. what year something was built, her response was simply "A long, long time ago." Also, part of the tour description included a Limoncello tasting. We were highly disappointed when we realized this was in a chocolate shop in Amalfi where they offer all walk-in customers tastings, not something that had been arranged for the tour. We had gone to this same chain candy store and done this tasting a week prior when we were in Venice, so felt this was somewhat misleading. In summary, parts were great (Pompeii and our driver), but other parts were highly disappointing.

We were very disappointed in the tour guide that went with us in the car all day., She didn’t have any water for us and hardly talked. She didn’t give us any information about what we were seeing along the way. There was no history, background or points of interest. She was unable to answer simple questions that were addressed to her. This was a very expensive tour and we expected more than just a car ride. That being said, the experience at Pompeii was interesting. There was a different tour guide who led our group through the ruins. Her name was Francesca and she explained all of the buildings and their use that we visited. However, I thought there would be more actual artifacts. The Amalfi coast was lovely to look at but not one word of information about what we were seeing or history of the area was given to us by the guide. The Limoncello drink was just free tiny samples used to encourage people to buy the product, not the romantic drink overlooking the beach that I had envisioned.

The trip to Pompeii and the Almafi Coast was exactly how it is described on their site. Our all day guide, Ara, was very attentive and provided interesting facts along the way. Max, our driver, expertly drove the van, which made it easy to relax and enjoy the sights. The one negative was our local guide at Pompeii. He was not very interesting and hard to understand. We were told that they use a variety of guides at Pompeii—we listened in on other tours that seemed much more interesting. Overall, we felt well cared for by this tour company and would book other tours with them.

It was worth it, we enjoyed it, the travel time is a little long but is part of the journey. The guide and the driver were helpful and always with a smile. The van was very comfortable, clean and safe.

Our tour was very relaxing and we were very happy with our guide Ara and our singing driver Max. They were very attentive and made our trip very special by interacting with us and sharing there knowledge.

Federica and Nicola were absolutely great. We had a fantastic day and were able to see all we wanted and more. Can highly recommend this to anyone wanting a great day in Pompei and Amalfi.

Our guide Antonella, and driver Max, were both very professional and knowledgable. Max would even give us a heads up of a great photo op with enough time to get our cameras out and ready. He was funny too. Antonella was teaching us Italian and correcting my pronunciation in between the sites. It was a long day, but covered so much in the short time we spent in Italy. Well worth it!

What an unforgettable experience! Ara and Max make an absolutely wonderful team. Max is incredibly knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what he does. He is a great communicator, an excellent driver, and made us feel comfortable and well taken care of throughout the entire day. Ara is warm, personable, and a fantastic conversationalist. She has a wonderful way of making the experience feel both special and familiar, and her personality added so much to our time in Positano and Amalfi. A very special mention goes to Francesca, our guide in Pompeii. She is not only incredibly knowledgeable and engaging, but also an archaeologist, which made the experience even more fascinating. Her expertise, enthusiasm, and ability to explain the history and details of Pompeii brought the ancient city to life for us in a truly memorable way. Ara, Max, and Francesca made this day one of the highlights of our trip. We cannot recommend them highly enough. Absolutely five stars!

Good experience - a way to see Pompeii and the Amalfi coast in one day. High tourist season - all places very crowded. Very long day but it had to be. Would recommend the tour operator.

We had an amazing time. We did Positino and Amalfi from Rome - not Pompeii. We are from the UK and both socially awkward, so were a bit nervous beforehand, but needn’t have been, it was brilliant. The driver, Max, is so talented! Also, welcoming, funny, and warm. Very knowledgeable on Italian culture. Giuseppe, our guide, was the perfect mix of interesting but also independent, he allowed time for us to wander alone and then would rejoin with interesting facts about the area or shops. Pointing out key landmarks along our journey too. Also a great photographer. Despite being a loooong day, both Max and Giuseppe never faltered. They also let us nap in the car. Definitely the best day of our trip! Highly recommend.

This was by far the highlight of our trip to Italy! Our entire family had an unforgettable day. Our driver Max, was outstanding. He shared so many interesting facts and stories throughout the journey, making the drive just as enjoyable as the destinations themselves. His driving skills were truly impressive, especially on the narrow, winding roads of Positano and Amalfi. We always felt safe and in great hands. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, and every stop was worth it. From the beauty of Positano and Amalfi to the fascinating history of Pompeii, everything was perfectly organized and exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend this excursion to anyone visiting Italy. It is absolutely worth it and creates memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you for giving our family such an incredible experience!

Giuseppe and Max were excellent on our tour to the Amalfi coast. Guiseppe took great care of us with information about every location we visited. He found us a lovely lunch spot and assisted us with finding shops for our unique shopping needs. Guiseppe is very energetic and fun throughout the entire journey. We would definitely recommend them both and use them for our next trip.

Max and Antonella were amazing!! This was one of the highlight of our trip to Italy. Very accommodating for stopping when needed, super informative and explained things along the drive. Great guides and helped pick out gifts to bring home as well!

I was hesitant to book this as it was such a long day but it was truly worth it! Our guide and driver, Giuseppe and Nicola were wonderful! Giuseppe shared his knowledge on points of interest the entire day. Nicola kept us safe. Now that is a drive we would not want to do on our own! They were kind enough to make our lunch reservations and made frequent stops for a bathroom break or quick photo. Pompei wax amazing and spending a couple of hours in Positano and Amalfi really was enough with all of the crowds. A long but truly worthwhile trip if you do not want to do this drive on your own.

We highly recommend Mama Mia Tours!! This was an amazing tour and the fact that they came to our hotel was even more amazing. There was no central meeting point to get to at 6:30 in the morning. Antonella our tour guide greeted us in our lobby. We saw so much in such a short amount of time. Antonella and Max our driver went over and above to make sure we didn’t miss anything! We even stopped on the road for breakfast and coffee. Max was able to navigate all the back roads and wasted no time behind stopped cars. He always knew an alternate way to go and he was an excellent driver. We felt very safe in his van. At the end he took us to a special viewing site where the views were incredible. Antonella also knew different places for us to stop and take unbelievable photos. She gave us a tremendous appreciation of Pompeii, Positano, Sorrento and Amalfi. She told us a lot of history related to Italy. She also took us into multiple shops as she was determined we taste the local foods. Our Pompeii guide Francesca was very knowledgeable. She knew all the ancient history stories behind the ruins. All in all it was a great day and we were in the hands of wonderful people to guide us. Book this tour. You will not be disappointed!!

Our driver, Max was very nice and was efficient at getting around. Our tour guide, Anna, in Pompeii did a wonderful job of walking us through the city. Positano and Amalfi were packed with people and the traffic was awful. They are beautiful locations but I would not recommend going to these places on the weekend.

Fantastic tour with Ali (tour guide) and Massimo (driver). Excellent communication so our pick was perfect, visit to Pompeii was very interesting and informative (tour guide at this site was Chiro). Visit to Positano was delightful and the lunch spot that Ali suggested was memorable. Then off to the Amalfi Coast which was also a beautiful stop. The entire way bathroom breaks were offered and interesting commentary along the way. The drive is winding but Massimo was a very smooth driver so we never felt any discomfort. Overall a wonderful tour, highly recommended.

This was a great day, definitely a highlight of our vacation! We were time constrained in Rome and looking for a tour to see a bit of the Amalfi coast and Pompeii and this fit the bill, we were very glad we booked it. We (2 people) booked the 'small group' tour and there were 6 people in total on the tour. The van arrived on time at our hotel to pick us up at 6:30am. On the way to Pompeii we stopped at a gas station/rest stop and we could buy ourselves coffee or breakfast there if we wanted. Pompeii was fantastic, we got there early enough that we beat the crowds and our guide showed us the highlights. We then went onto Positano, which was lovely and we had a wonderful lunch on the beach there. Note that the restaurant charges a cover fee (I believe it was 4 euros per person) and requires each customer to order a plate (my travelling companion and I weren't super hungry and had originally planned on sharing a dish but could not. This isn't unusual in Europe for restaurants on the beach but if you've never encountered it this may be a surprise. The view was worth it!). The guide arranged the restaurant reservation before we got there so we were able to be seated immediately when we arrived, at a table right on the beach with an unobstructed water view (if we had not had a reservation there would have been a very long wait). This was great planning by the tour company to make things go smoothly. We were then onto Amalfi. Note the "lemoncello tasting" is simply the guide bringing you to a store that offers all customers lemoncello samples (I believe the tour description that the tasting is included is misleading, to me it indicated they had arranged something special, they did not. However, the samples were lovely and generous and we wouldn't have found the store on our own, so fair enough). The highlight of the tour for us was the drive with the beautiful views. The roads are very scenic but steep and winding. Everyone in our group felt incredibly safe with our driver, Massimo, and we all commented several times that we were grateful for his confident and capable driving. Overall this day trip was a long day that was totally worth it, and a true highlight of our vacation. If you want to see the highlights of Pompeii and take in the scenic Amalfi coast I don't think you'll find a better small group tour in this price point. I highly recommend it and would book it again. Thanks for the wonderful tour and thanks Massimo for keeping us safe on our beautiful drive!

Full day. But so worth it. Pompeii was amazing and switch gears to one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Guides were fantastic. Always felt safe. Highly recommended!

Our private tour with our guide, Ali and driver, Massimo was excellent. It was a lot to fit in one day, but it all went smoothly and was really enjoyable. Our first stop was Pompeii with our guide Francesca, who was so knowledgeable and friendly and managed to show us and explain this incredible archaeological site while avoiding crowds. Then we were onto Positano for lunch - Ali arranged a beautiful place on the beach for us. And a little more driving to end the day in amazing Amalfi. The sights were breathtaking. Ali was patient and attentive with our group of 4. He never made us feel rushed, he offered us suggestions and let us decide. He was also very knowledgeable and interesting to learn from. Massimo managed all of the tight, winding roads and crazy traffic like an expert. We really liked the other couple on our tour with us so that made it enjoyable as well. The whole day was wonderful. It’s a lot of driving but the sights are amazing and it’s worth the extra cost to do privately. Highly recommend!

The guide GIULiO he is profesional and very sweet, we visit POMPEII, POSITANO, AMALFI, was amazing, the views, spots 😍👏🏼 they offer break for coffe, toilets, gelato, and the restaurant for lunch with view to the ocean 😍😘 explain every details about the places and not rush, GIULiO take photos and he share photos in case you can’t take it. The Van was very clean and comfortable. Driver is very polite and offer stop if you need toilets, they are very on time. In my case they pick up and drop of my Airbnb 🙏🏻👏🏼👏🏼 this tour is the best I highly recomend

It was a long day in the car, but Ali and Max were both great. The tour of Pompeii was very informative, but the site was so interesting that we could have spent more time there. Ali recommended a great restaurant in Positano right on the beach where we were able to dine while listening to the waves crash. With all the time in the car, the guides did a great job of scheduling brakes for restroom and refreshments. Ali and Max provided interesting dialogue about the geography and landscapes that we passed.

I had great great time with Simone the tour operator assistant, Roberto the driver, Julio the future tour operator assistant and Ana the tour guide for Pompei. Everybody was playing their part perfectly to make my journey wonderful and unforgettable. I highly appreciate it and feel very lucky with have them with me. Right now it’s low season and I’m lucky enough to enjoy VIP service today. Pompei is iconic place to visit and Amalfi is just so so beautiful and stunning with one of a kind super unique view. I highly recommend this tour and Simone Roberto Julio and Ana!!! Guys you’ve done an amazing job!!!

Massimo (our driver) and Paola (our host) were a lot of fun and turned what could have been a long day into a really fun and engaging experience! The tour of Pompeii with our (funny and knowledgeable) guide Frankie was educational and loaded with interesting facts. The drive was scenic, and the overall trip was a must-do.

I was nervous about doing this trip as it was a long time in the car and I suffer with PTSD from a car accident a few years ago. I did nit need to worry as our driver was excellent. The Mercedes van was very clean and comfortable. The views from the drive along the mountain and cliffs were amazing . We were picked up on time and stopped along the route for a coffee. Pompeii was very interesting . We met our tour guide at the archaeological site . There we were told the story of how the people use to live and work there . She then went on to tell us the story of when the volcano ash descended upon the people . We spent two hours here . Our driver and guide then took us to Amalfi coast where we stopped for a lively pasta lunch . After we tried some local candy and drinks . They were so nice we purchased loads ! We then headed back on long the coast stopping to take in the views of Positano . We have lots of photos from such a beautiful day . Day started at 6.30 am back at 7.30 pm

Amazing day! We saw Pompeii, Positano and the Amalfi Coast. Plenty of time for shopping, and a great recommendation for lunch. Irena (sp), assisted with a lunch reservation at her favorite place, and she surprised us by being right on the water with the best seat in the house. This was definitely a tour that we enjoyed very much and it’s highly recommended! Max was the driver, and he was exceptional on the tiny roads on the Amalfi coast, which can be kind of harrowing at times.

Dina and Massimo where both excellent. In Pompeii we were seamlessly handed off to Francesca for our morning tour of Pompeii. It was Clear that Dina and Francesca are very knowledgeable. We learned a great deal and had a wonderful day.

I booked a private tour for a day trip to see Pompei and Amalfi Coast and Dina and Max were our guide and driver respectively. It far exceeded my expectations. Max was very professional, safe and efficient as a driver. You can tell how experienced he was, opening our doors and always welcoming us back to the van with a smile. Dina was so qualified for the position of tour guide given her extensive knowledge of the regions of Italy, experience in education and passion for the Italian culture. She went out of her way to fully educate us about the places we visited. As a bonus, she was a great photographer. The tour consisted of an efficient schedule of events that included a scenic spot to have lunch, places to take pictures, recommendation for shopping stores and some alone time. There would be no (sane) way to navigate this busy day trip without their help. Couldn’t recommend this duo more! They’re also fun!

We had the most incredible experience with our tour team — our wonderful leader Dina and our amazing drivers Massimo and Max. From start to finish, everything was seamless, professional, and so enjoyable. Dina was an absolute star — knowledgeable, friendly, and always making sure we were comfortable and having the best time. We would highly recommend this fabulous tour by Mamma Mia Italy. Our family was very well cared for by very professional and friendly Max & Carola. Max navigated the busy and often tricky roads very well so as that our kid was comfortable through the trip. Carola was very friendly and coordinated the tour very efficiently. Tour was planned carefully to cover Pompeii, Positano, Amalfi while allowing enough time for breaks, snacks, lunch (they had great lunch recommendations), and taking in the views. Pompeii surpassed our expectations as a very well preserved window into Roman life and clture. Ciro was our very knowledgeable local Pompeii guide who was also great with kids. Amalfi coastlife was breathtaking. We had plenty of time to soak in the beauty, lunch, shop, and even do some limoncello tasting. Overall trip was great value for money and we will highly recommend Mamma Mia Italy for their fabulous staff, comfortable vehicles, and excellent service.
