The crypts were creepy and everyone was knowledgeable! Easy tour, bring a jacket as it’s cool down in the catacombs. It was a great tour

Itinerary
The Capuchin Crypt sets the tone for the tour. Capuchin monks used the bones of nearly 4,000 of their brothers to decorate this somber space in intricate floor-to-ceiling designs, earning it the macabre nickname of ‘the Bone Chapel’. Fewer visitors brave the Bone Chapel after dark, so you’ll have space to examine every detail of this strange place of worship, from an actual skull-and-crossbones to chandeliers made of human vertebrae. Your guide will tell you the theories, but it’s up to you to draw your own conclusions about the meaning of the crypt’s skeletal furnishings.
An air-conditioned coach will take you from here to your second site, the Catacombs of Priscilla. No other tour is permitted to enter these hallowed tunnels after-hours. Almost 2,000 years ago, early Christians took shelter here to bury their dead and practice their forbidden faith. With no other visitors around, and with your expert, English-speaking guide to relay the history of the tombs and tunnels, you can truly experience the atmosphere of this sacred spot. Follow the setting sun down into Rome’s mysterious underworld – and you’ll never see the city the same way again.

This was an extremely interesting tour. Our guide, Alberto, was very informative and friendly. He had a great personality and made the tour very interesting. Highly recommend.
An excellent tour. The Bone chapel was amazing. The number of skulls was incredible, and the use of their bones to produce artwork was interesting. Really enjoyed the catacomb tour. The German nun, whose name escapes me, did a fantastic job explaining the catacombs and crypts, the reason why they existed, and how they are an essential part of Rome’s history.
That was such an unexpected visit! It starts with a museum to get a quick historical background on the catacombs which ends in an actual crypt (impressive but will definitely give you chills). The catacombs are located further in the city (15mn bus drive). Our tour was given by one of the sister who was truly passionate and eager to share her covent’s story. We were truly amazed by what we saw and it was quite the experience.
This tour is an absolute must‑do while you’re in Rome! It was incredibly interesting and made for some amazing vacation photos. Our guide was fantastic and spoke excellent English, and the guide who led us through the catacombs was wonderful as well. She really knew her history and made the entire experience engaging and memorable. Overall, this tour was definitely worth the money and one of the highlights of our trip!
Really enjoyed this tour. We are a family with teenagers who also rated this. Very informative guide. The coolness of the crypts and catacomb's was very welcome too. So interesting. The tour guides also give interesting information/ stories about Rome as you drive past buildings and ruins which adds to the experience
Amazing and humbling experience, our guide was Ion and he was super knowledgeable and made the tour fun. We loved this tour and of all the places we went, people always love the bone crypt pictures the best, highly suggest this tour. 10 Stars!
Fantastic and interesting stops. The tour guide was very opinionated and we didn't appreciate that. It was slightly offensive. The catacombs was guided by a nun who was wonderful. Make sure to dress modestly (no shoulders or knees). That wasn't mentioned in the booking and we ended up having to buy disposable wraps/coats.
Our tour guide was Alberto, and he was great. We had a fantastic, interesting tour of both the crypts and the catacombs. My granddaughter especially loved it. This was something that was on her MUST DO while visiting Rome.
Really unique tour of the underground in Rome. The capuchin crypts are, to be honest, pretty creepy, however the attached museum and our guide really explained the reasoning and made the bone displays much more meaningful than if we had gone alone. The catacombs also were much better experienced with a guide. My 13 year old really thought it was amazing
We did the Tuscany, Monte Tour! Sara Maria was very knowledgeable and her English was exceptionally well spoken! She made the tour very clear and easy! Thank you
Alain was very engaging and informative. Time well spent on our first evening in Rome. Very interesting part of history.
This tour was well-organized and went smoothly. I thought Alain did a great job of explaining the sites we visited.
Maryam was amazing. The crypts at the museum were cool but getting to go underground to the catacombs was definitely an experience that is off the beaten path!
The tour guide was amazing and helped us find our way after the tour. She was awesome. I loved the tour and it was an amazing experience to have.
Absolutely brilliant and informative tour. The guide was amazing and the nuns who keep it were very kind.
Yes it was great and knowledgeable. Thanks Veronica
Really wonderful unique experience! Cat was a great tour guide, very knowledgeable and funny. Would 100% recommend
A great tour, our guide Maria was super knowledgeable and we were impressed with the way she ran the tour. We loved every part of it!
This was a great tour. Our guide, Maria, was fantastic. I highly recommend anyone visiting Rome, do this tour. The tour details says you cannot wear clothing that show your knees however when we arrived we were told only your thighs can’t show. Misinformation but didn’t negatively impact our tour in anyway.
Seeing the crypts and catacombs was an interesting experience. I would recommend For an underground learning experience in Italy. Remember to come with your shoulders and knees covered. If not you have to purchase a kimono for 1 euro, but we had a good time.
This tour was so much fun! The tour leaders are passionate about their work and it shows! Be sure to ask many questions they do have the answers!
What a unique experience! Our guide was Alan-he was great! Priest who guided us through the catacombs was so knowledgeable and eager to share with us. Don't miss the gift shop!
We didn’t know what to expect when we booked this tour but what little we knew about the history of the catacombs didn’t even touch the surface. Our guide, Divon (the tall pale guy leading the pack) was a wealth of knowledge and his humor kept us hanging on every word. A very memorable day if you don’t mind looking at corpses!
This was an interesting little tour: probably a little over-priced for the time spent in the actual sites. We first saw about 4 crypt rooms that were very morbidly decorative, with the guide providing some background information about them and the Capuchin monks. Next came a bus drive across town to the catacombs. A local guide took us into the catacombs for about half an hour, providing some information about their history. Then the bus dropped us off in the rain on a street near the meeting point.
If you've ever wondered what a chandelier made of human vertebrae looks like then this is the place for you. Although the diagonal pattern of jaw bones and skeleton of a princess on the ceiling really complemented it. The guide was great, very well educated, interesting and with impeccable English. Although the catacombes were so busy with various different tours, and different tour guides, trying to show you specific sites that I wondered if they were playing a game of tig. Which kind of gave the place a pythonesque rather than a spiritual feeling.
The tour wasn’t really worth doing. Our guide Inti was trying to be funny but failed. He also gave his personal views on religion and said that it wasn’t worth going to the colosseum or the Vatican. Whilst he is entitled to his opinions I don’t think this was the right audience to share them with
We were SO excited for this experience, but walked away feeling disappointed. Our experience in the catacombs, specifically, lacked the lively, interesting commentary we had hoped for.
We had booked a tour 2 months in advance for the Crypt and Catacombs after hours via Klook. This was something we came to Rome specifically to experience. As we arrived on the 16th July at 4.20pm, I approached a young Italian man wearing the city wonders polo shirt. He asked me if my name was Candy and I said no. I showed him my ticket saying crypt and catacomb tour and he asked for my name, as I told him he has said “oh, I remember this name you missed your tour”, I asked how could I have missed my tour when it says meet at 4.45pm and 15 minutes before. He then had the audacity to say that it wasn’t his problem and that I could not join the tour because there was “not enough seats left” that this was Klook’s fault not City Wonders. As I started getting aggravated, he was contacting the company to see what went wrong. The final result was that we could not go on the tour and we could not go on the following day as it was sold out. We also were flying out on the 18th. This man that was at Piazza Barberini was not apologetic, insincere and basically did not care that they had stuffed up. He said I had to call up city wonders to sort it out myself. As I was fuming, I made him call them right away to deal with this issue. Nothing could be done and nothing else was available, we were left stranded and told we would have a refund and that was it. This is extremely disappointing coming from all the way from Australia to see catacombs. I have read other reviews about City Wonders not playing their part on refunds, so I shall see what happens in the near future.
I wish I could give a zero !! We travelled to Rome to do this tour and booked the tour for 4:45pm in July 16. We arrived on time (early) at 4:30pm. We found the tour guide to be only told we had missed the tour. Apparently our names were put down for 2:30pm. We had booked ours in May. Two other people on the tour had booked the tour today. I am guessing they sold our tickets to them. The tour guide stated that it was our problem not the companies. He stated we could get a refund. I told him a refund means nothing when I have come all this way for the experience. It appears the company is only interested in getting Money and that’s it. Book with a different company
This was a great tour lead by a great guide, Mikaela. She was very knowledgeable and answered all questions the group had. We got to go deep below the city to explore things that I would have definitely missed out on. I’m glad I booked this tour and can’t say enough things about our guide.
Took this tour with Mikeala (the Swedish spelling😃) She was outstanding with her knowledge and delivery .we really enjoyed the afternoon and certainly would book with City Tours again on our return trip to Rome . The Codys (Dublin)
Booked this tour through city wonders , the capuchin crypt wasn’t what we was expecting from the photo you expect walls made from the skulls of the 4000 monks it was so much more ! I don’t want to spoilt it by saying what the crypts were like but it was the highlight of the tour for us , as with all tours you go along for the historical facts and our guide was very knowledgeable and really tried to bring it to life as best he could after the catacombs it was a short journey back to our meeting point and our filled us in on how to get the best experience of Rome and how not to be fooled by over expensive restaurants that you wouldn’t go back to , we followed one of his directions and had a lovely evening meal in a little Italian resturant ,that even the locals we’re queuing to get into !
The Crypts and Catacombs tour was made especially fantastic thanks to our funny, informative, guide, Mike, with City Wonders! This was our first trip to Rome (4 of us from Tulsa, OK) and we met new friends from Tulsa on this tour. Ask for Mike if you sign up for this tour --- he will make it special with his humor and professionalism.
My wife and I along with another couple traveling through Italy heard about this location but weren't sure what to expect from the tour - it was a great! Our guide Valerio was so well informed and kept the group (kept small unlike many other walking tours we had seen) very engaged.
We had tour guide Mike on a day trip out to a few crypts and catacombs, culminating in a walking tour through the Capuchin Crypt/bone chapel. This was a phenomenal tour - Mike was very funny, informative, and knowledgeable; and the sites are awe-inspiring, thought-provoking, and macabre in a very fun way. Plus, if it's hot out, this is a great tour because you're inside most of the time and down where it is nice and cool.
We did this tour on our second day (and my first Rome trip) in Rome. Mike was very friendly and professional (and a fellow Californian). Be prepared for some light humor throughout the tour - it was greatly appreciated. All joking aside, the tour was extremely educational; Mike obviously knows his stuff, and strings the information together in a way that keeps it interesting. The real star of the show is the handiwork of the Cappuchins who decorated the crypt with the bones of their deceased brothers. The artistic splendor is breathtaking - I’ll admit I’m a bit odd but I found it very beautiful and and appreciated the thought and breadth of meaning that went into its creation. Mike’s description of each chapel only enhanced the experience. The second half of the tour takes you a few minutes outside of the historic border of Rome. Very cool (literally and figuratively) to be in a place where so many people have passed, and that holds so much history. Would definitely recommend this tour, especially for those who enjoy experiences a little outside the typical tourist attraction.
Myself and my 2 grandsons loved this tour. They came home with a wealth of information and even they were impressed at how knowledgeable our guide was. Good timing on this too.
I'd give this 6 stars if I could. Definitely recommend this tour, especially to escape the heat. So much history and most definitely not your run of the mill tour. Mike was such a deadly tour guide and he made the experience interesting and fun. Decent price and well managed. We got lucky and had a small group which made it more personal. Stick it on your lust if you're going to Rome!
Rebecca was a knowledgeable guide (and an American who spoke immaculate English). The tour was amazing in summer as the catacombs are around 15 deg C. While photos are not allowed inside any of the underground areas, the tour is worth it as viewing these areas yourself (note that the catacombs are exclusive to guided tours) will not give you the same experience and attention to detail. Highly recommend despite the slightly high price. Women should remember to bring along something to cover their shoulders and knees for the Capuchin Crypt.
This was the most expensive tour we did in Rome and it was the biggest let down of the whole trip! Knowing that we were going to be doing a whole lot of historical tours, I wanted to splurge and do one I thought our teenagers would enjoy so I booked this one. First of all, our tour guide was an older woman named Sandra who had just moved to Rome about 9 months ago. She was a nice woman, but was definitely not an expert. She floundered a lot when explaining things on the tour and seemed lost for words quite a bit. This is literally just a retirement job for her and she did not appear to have an background that would make her qualified to lead these tours. We were rushed through the Capuchin Crypt and didn’t get to look through the museum at all. We would have saved a ton of money by just purchasing tickets there and walking through the museum on our own. I honestly think we would have learned more by reading the placards than we did from listening to our guide. The Catacomb of Priscilla was very interesting, but again I think we would have enjoyed it more on our own. Save your money and do these by yourself or go with a more reputable tour company.
We had a great experience on this tour! We were lost and the customer service was awesome to help us get there!! The underground catacombs were definitely an e oeeiencecww won't forget! Great tour guide!! Very friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable!! The bone art is simply unbelievable, you have to see it to believe it!!
We did 3 tours with Dark Rome - City Wonders. First the lesser known tour of the crypts and underground was really, Really cool and unique. Rebecca was fantastic: ask her about the craxy American, Russel Crow and her flashlight. We also did the Vatican and Colesseum tours. I would advise one thing: always choose the skip the line tours if you can. At the Vatican our tour was at 8:00 AM "before the public entrance". Our tour walked up and bypassed hundreads of people who paid the regular entrance fee and went in an hour before the masses of people. The smaller the group the better. The guides are well educated, explain everything over your private headset. If you do the Colesseum tour: do the private entrance to the underground. You get to go under the arena and to the top of the Colesseum (locked) where the public and regular tours cannot go........ worth the extra. Again tell Rebecca hi for me!!!!!!

Our tour guide Mike was great! He was very personable, knowledgeable and made the experience enjoyable. The tour is definitely unique which was great to do something different for a change. It was unfortunate that we could not take pictures of the bone chapel/crypt but understood why and that this is not the fault of the tour company. The advertisement stated that touring the crypts was an afterhours exclusive after the doors close to the general public but that was not the case, not sure if the hours had been extended due to the holiday that day? The catacombs however was a private tour. All in all, the tour was informative and very manageable since its not that long. My only criticism was that I felt there were too many people on the tour which wasn't an issue until we gathered in the Bone Chapel exhibits where we were uncomfortably packed like sardines at each stop.

We would highly recommend this tour. Very interesting - walk to the crypts and view how human bones were used to decorate the resting places of important Franciscan priests; then hop on a bus for a 15 min ride to the Priscilla catacombs and learn the history of how the dead were buried outside of Rome for centuries. Very interesting and different! Highly recommend, and Dmitri is the best guide! Great English, attentive, knowledgeable, considerate, funny, and kept us all together! Thanks, Dmitri!
I booked the Catacombs and Crypts tour with Dark Rome. They did not pick me up (and four other people who had booked separately from me) at the appointed place at the appointed time. When I contacted them, they offered no apology, no refund and said I could have a credit or re-book with a €15 REBOOKING FEE. Dark Rome has apparently been bought out by City Wonders, and so it was in fact City Wonders who left the five of us stranded there. I would never book with either company again.
I wasn't sure what to expect but a friend talked me into it. Turns out it was one of the highlights of my trip! Our guide, Andreas, was incredible. You could tell that he loved this history, beauty and sacredness of the crypts and catacombs. It's an absolute must see.
Our guide was Melanie and she is marvelous! I think tour was more than 2.5 hours but they passed very quickly. She took us to three different places and all of them were full of mysteries, interesting stories and bones of course, the first one in particular :) Highly recommended!
Very good organized and very good guides (Louise) she was a speed talker with a lot of energy. It was truly a pleasure! Catacombs was really awesome!
A real scam and a disgrace, we bought a small group excursion in Spanish, we arrived and the guides are English-speaking and rude. We stayed because they didn't give us any solution, in principle they were going to refund the €148 for the excursion and in the end they say no. It is not right to deceive customers.
