This was an amazing tour to do from Rome. The trip out to Ostia Antica was very easy from the city. Our tour guide was Simona, and she was extremely knowledgeable and engaging with great stories and bits of information about every part of the city. The ruins are really well preserved, and i think a guide is a huge benefit to exploring this area because it's hard to know the history of each part of the city otherwise. I would highly recommend this tour and Simona as a guide.

I thoroughly enjoyed my tour of Ostia Antica. Paola is a superb guide - knowledgeable, warm, friendly and a consummate professional. Her English is perfect and she brings the site alive with interesting detail and observations. For anyone wanting to level up from regular tours this one provides great value and was the highlight of my trip to Rome!
A wonderful opportunity to see extensive Roman ruins without the crowds, with enlightening insights from Paola about the history, culture and architecture of the time. Wear good walking shoes, bring a shade umbrella or sunscreen and a water bottle, and enjoy!
Paola was fantastic and we found everything about the tour really interesting. We were so glad we booked this tour as we would’ve missed so much. It was also extremely hot and she was good at finding shady areas when possible. She was friendly and enthusiastic. Highly recommended.
We enjoyed our tour a lot. Our guide was knowledgeable, and did a great job at explaining the history of each site.
Our tour of Ostia Antica with Paola was one of the highlights of our trip to Rome and Sicily. Paola's background in archeology and deep knowledge of the area (as an academic expert, nearby resident, and general frequent visitor of the site) made for one of the best tour experiences we've had anywhere. She immediately led us away from the crowds, and despite the fact that it was an unusually busy day at Ostia Antica (due to free admission), we did not encounter too many other visitors during most of the tour, and felt like we were seeing many sites that would have gone overlooked by almost all visitors without her skillful navigation of the site. The whole tour was extremely engaging and we were blown away seeing the mixture of Roman apartment buildings (insulae), villas, everyday sites (restaurants, shops, warehouses), and religious sites (especially from the Mithra cult), tombs, etc. that are seemingly endless and so well preserved at Ostia. The extant mosaics and other decoration still preserved in buildings at Ostia are breathtaking. If you have an extra day in Rome, or are interested in Roman history/art/archeology and have seen the Roman Forum/Coliseum before, I highly recommend visiting this site as a "can't miss" and this tour in particular.
Our private tour guide Paola was a great communicator and very knowledgeable. It was an enjoyable experience and highly recommended.
We had an amazing tour at Ostia Antico with Paola. It was thoroughly interesting and fascinating. We learned so much and would highly recommend going here. She was wonderful.
Detailed tour of Ostia Antica with comprehensive and well presented information about life and history of the city. Paola is clearly passionate and educated about the area and provided an excellent tour of the ruins.
We had a private tour with Paola in early June. She is an excellent guide for Ostia Antica. She is not only very knowledgeable about the site and its amazing history but also very personable. We really enjoyed spending the afternoon with her walking through the site and learning about so many aspects of daily life there. Highly recommended.
Our private tour of Ostia Antica was an extraordinary experience—an absolute must for history lovers and anyone looking to explore an ancient Roman site without the crowds. From the moment we arrived, our guide’s passion and expertise were evident. She brought the ruins to life with vivid storytelling, historical context, and a deep understanding of Roman daily life. Unlike other archaeological sites, Ostia Antica feels wonderfully immersive—you’re able to walk along original streets, step into ancient baths, shops, and apartment buildings, and really imagine what life was like in this once-thriving port city. One of the true highlights was the remarkably well-preserved mosaics. From intricate black-and-white designs in the bathhouses to vibrant patterns in public spaces, the artistry was stunning. Our guide did a fantastic job pointing out the symbolism and craftsmanship in each piece, giving us a new appreciation for Roman aesthetics and engineering. What made this tour truly special was the peaceful atmosphere. With fewer tourists than Pompeii or the Roman Forum, we felt like we had the site to ourselves, allowing for a more personal and contemplative experience. This private tour was a perfect blend of education, exploration, and inspiration. We left with a deeper understanding of ancient Rome and memories we’ll never forget. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Rome or the surrounding area—Ostia Antica is a hidden gem, and having a knowledgeable guide made all the difference.
The ruins are amazing. Having a knowledgeable guide like Paola was invaluable. Not only did we learn about ancient Roman life and history but Paola was able to tie this into our current events. She was very passionate about Roman history at Ostia Antica.
Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica is an amazing site! It is large, complicated, and has a great deal of history and variety. My husband and I are so glad we decided to visit this site on a private tour with an archaeologist as a guide. Paola was extremely helpful, organized, efficient, and informative! There is too much to see at this site (and they continue to excavate). She presented the site to us in a way that helped us see what was here and how they lived, worked, and played. Our tour was fascinating. Paola was an excellent guide!
Paola was fantastic! She really made the Ostia Antica ruins come alive. She had great visual aids to help us understand the layout and history of development of the city.
This tour was so interesting! Paulo is extremely knowledgeable and eager to share about this fascinating ancient site.
This was one of the highlights of our entire trip to Rome. Ostia antica is an amazing archeological site and our tour guide, who was an archeologist, gave us an amazing tour experience. This was a much different owce than the hustle and bustle of Rome and there were practically zero crowds here. A great activity all around and I would highly recommend!
This was an excellent tour of Ostia Antica, the ancient port for Rome. Our guide, Paola was friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable. We saw the remains of the Porta Romana necropolis, a city gate, the ancient theater and the Piazza of the Corporations, houses and shops with mosaic floors, warehouses, a laundry facility and the water system, large public baths and toilets, an apartment building and the thermopoliuma/taverna across the street, and the city Forum. It was a very interesting 3 hour tour that give us a peek at Roman lifestyles. Time flew by and we learned so much - thank you Paola!!
Paola was extremely knowledgeable about the everyday life and living conditions of the average Roman living in ancient Ostia. Fascinating stories and a detailed grasp of art, archeology and religion of the times.
I decided to escape the confusion of a weekend in Rome and travel to this attraction on a Sunday, ordering a tour through this website. I was met by Paola, an archeologist, at the entrance about ten minutes before the stated time on my ticket. She led us on a journey through the area that began with the necropolis, originally outside the city walls and dating back to the 1st century BC. We then passed through the Porta Romana, the entrance to the city for those arriving from Rome, and walked along the Decumanus Maximus, essentially the Main Street of the city. Over the next couple hours be branched off the main road, visiting a number of erratically preserved sites including the baths, a flour mill, the city’s forum, a very well preserved amphitheater (with adjoining Square of the Guilds), and even firemen’s barracks. Also included were the Cassegiato of the Thermopolium (ancient tavern) and an almost entirely vacant Temple of Hercules. Our group of three spent almost as many hours on site, with a quick stop at the souvenir store at the end. There appear to be three ways to visit the site: walking tour with a guide, audio guide, and a self-sufficient exploration reading the storyboards. I would highly suggest the former as my interaction with Paola was superb. She gave a professional perspective that you simply can't get from the other two options. a highly recommended choice.
It was an excellent tour but I did not know many mosaic were covered for protection in the winter time , which I was very disappointed …
Paola was a great guide! She explained everything we could want to know about the daily life in Roman times, and we saw many ‘off the beaten path’ houses that we would never had seen by ourselves. I had a great time!
We'd signed up for this tour and were excited about seeing the ruins (which we ended up doing on our own - they're amazing and a hidden gem). Unfortunately, I'd put the wrong date on my calendar and when we showed up - no guide. We called him on the phone but he was not available to join us. Here's our issue. We did NOT get a call or message the previous day (our signup time) when we didn't show up, either from the guide or the tour operator. If we had gotten the call, we could have gotten to the meeting point. I contacted the tour operator and suggested that we were both at fault and that perhaps we could split the difference and get a half-refund. She refused, only offering to cover the cost of our entry tickets. This was an expensive tour and that solution was not acceptable to me. The tour operator forwarded on a screen shot of a message that was supposedly sent to me, but I checked all my texts, calls, and social media contacts and found no such message. We wanted to warn others who sign up for this tour to triple check your details. It might have been an amazing tour and arranged guide - we'll never know.
Very knowledgeable guide - Philipp. He's an archaeologist who had worked at Ostia. Great tour, pointing out features, translating inscriptions and interpreting the history of the site. Just what we wanted. Slight admin issue as TripAdvisor booking was a front end for local tours and there was a minor comms issue over tickets being ready at the entrance. Not Philipps fault. Download tickets before you're there or screenshot them - minimal signal at the entrance building. We were there 2.5 hours and covering the rest of the site would take the same again, but wed seen the key locations. Ours started 0930 which meant it was cooler and less crowded. By the time we left, lots of people were arriving. Annoyingly, couldn't find a train timetable for Sao Paolo to Ostia, even at the stations, but trains seemed regular (every 15 mins) and its €1.50 each way for the c.35 min journey.
Ostia Antica is an experience that should not be missed. After you visit it you will wonder why you spent so much time at the forum. There is so much to see at Ostia that a private guide is a real plus. The guide that we had for this tour, Romina, was extremely knowledgeable, knew the site well and also kept the tour entertaining
Ostia Antica was the last stop on our trip (it's not far from the Fiumicino airport) and our tour turned out to be one of the high points. Paula was utterly amazing. As my son (age 25) said, "She knew everything." As a trained archeologist, her knowledge of the site (a onetime bustling port city), its history, how the structures were made and used and how they were uncovered, was profound. And her clear passion for her subject brought it all to life and kept the 3 of us engaged for the entire 3-hour tour. An amazing experience.
If you are tired of the bedlam of central Rome, Ostia Antica is a fab day out easily accessible via public transport. This was a great tour with Paola, who was super knowledgable and a great communicator - she painted a picture of life of Romans back in this once great city. I'd recommend to everyone.
This tour was a gem in our trip. Paola was outstanding. Her depth of knowledge brought so much to life. Ostia Antica is an amazing place. Far more than I expected. Paola's in depth knowledge and her ability to communicate her knowledge and passion about the park to others just makes it all the more incredible. The title of the tour "Daily life in Ostia Antica" is exactly what Paola showed us. At the end I wished we had another three hours. The trip here and booking this tour were absolutely worth it and one of the great high lights of our time in Italy.
Paola is an amazing tour guide. She has deep knowledge of ancient Roman culture and is friendly and engaging. She really made life in ancient Ostia come to life! We called at the last possible minute and she graciously met us at the site. We wouldn’t’t have appreciated Ostia nearly as much on our own. Highly recommend her company.
Amazing! Paola is an archeologist and was so passionate and knowledgeable about the site. Ostia Antica is a treasure and a window into life as it was 2000+ years ago. A must visit.
Our guide Maria was great and provided a ton of useful and interesting information that really made the ruins come to life.
Stefania was our guide. OUTSTANDING! She has a PhD but also the skill of a gifted teacher. Excellent English plus the ability to hear the client’s interest & adjust her narration accordingly. Deep knowledge *and* fabulous energy. Stefania also made extra efforts to adjust out tour schedule after United canceled our first flight. We met her immediately after arriving at Rome’s FCO airport and offset our stiffness from 7 hours in a 777 by walking 4 miles through Rome’s ancient port. A terrific way to launch our return to Italy! Stefania’s colleagues were also very attentive to email & text as we worked through the rescheduling. An A++ company run by intelligent, gracious women!
We were so happy to have Paola guide us through Ostia Antica. She was such an expert guide, full of interesting anecdotes and stories, which brought the past to life. She was patient with the members of the group who needed more explanations and even came up with games to keep the youngsters engaged. Highly recommended!
We recently did the Roman Mysteries Tour in Ostia Antica, guided by Paola. WOW! What an incredible experience. Paola took us on a walking adventure all over the site, explaining all the aspects of daily life in Ostia Antica and the history of the area and Rome at that time. She came prepared with lots of pictures that really brought the stories to life and allowed us to more fully realize what the site would have looked like long ago. She also had lots of great stories and information about the different religions and cults that thrived in the city, which we found extremely interesting and unique. Paola went above and beyond to ensure we had a memorable experience and we walked away feeling much more knowledgeable about the history of Ostia Antica. The tour also really enhanced our experience in Rome, as we felt we better understood some of the ancient sites we explored there. We would absolutely recommend taking a tour with Visit Ostia Antica. There is no way we would have been able to understand and appreciate the site without Paola as a guide. Also, the comparisons to Pompeii are quite accurate; this site is MASSIVE, so plan to spend several hours here (we did a half day) and bring comfortable walking shoes.
An excellent tour of a remarkable (and lovely and extremely uncrowded) place. We had Paula as our guide and she was excellent. Incredibly knowledgeable… a trained archeologist… Brought along additional maps and illustrations. We had a wonderful day and I would highly recommend it.
Paola is the best. She is so knowledgeable and interesting. She made the site come to life with her stories. When it was over we couldn’t believe it was two and a half hours. The time just flew by
We had a great tour of the ancient harbor with Paola. Lots of interesting places and information. We already know a lot about the Roman Empire. But Paola was still able to teach us a lot of new stuff and insights. Besides that she was also very friendly and helpful to us with our baby Julia. Next time we visit Ostia Antica, we'll want to book another tour with Visit Ostia Antica to explore other parts of the site. Regards, Tom, Mariska and little Julia.
This was am amazing tour! Our guide, Paolo, was so knowledgeable and familiar with Ostia she was not only able to give is excellent insight into the city, but also show us some lovely gems that we otherwise would have never noticed. Excellent!
We LOVED our private tour of Ostia Antica with Maria Rita and could not think of a more wonderful way to spend the morning of our last full day in Italy. We started to connect with and understand, even more than in Rome or Pompeii, the people who lived in this place and why they lived the lives they did. My favorite part was the ancient tile mosaics in in the marketplace stalls that labeled, with words and images, all the detailed professional groups that were represented there. Most were specialized guilds related to shipping and marine commerce. Afterward we visited a local family restaurant which was so much more personal, but the pasta no less perfect, than at all the busy places in Rome.
This was a fantastic tour of an amazing site! The tour guide Stefania is extremely knowledgeable, and knows how to tell fascinating, vivid stories with charisma and humour. I feel like I have just stepped out of a time machine. Definitely the highlight of my trip to Rome!
The visit to Ostia antica with Paola(Viator guide) was really rewarding and helpful to better understand the daily lives and culture of ancient Rome. I highly recommend this tour. The price is unbelievably low considering it’s a private, not group, tour. I’d like to thank Paola again for her detailed and kind explanation.
This tour was a highlight of our time in Rome and in Italy. We had a fantastic tour guide Stefania who was incredible. We immediately clicked with her the moment we met and the tour was so well designed and structured that it kept our engagement throughout. I travelled to Ostia with my wife (Who has a Classics Degree) and two teenage children. We were of the view that this was the best tour of our time in Rome - brought to life by Stefania. I have read the other reviews and not much more to add from the excellent reviews that have preceded this one. The daily lives of ancient Roman times was certainly vividly imagined and described expertly by Stefania and her depth of knowledge and skill kept us all captured by the stories and excellent account of how life would have been in this period and the sophistication of life / engineering and thought of Ancient Rome. Would highly recommend. This should be on everyone’s must see list if they have an interest in really understanding life in this period. The Park is excellently preserved and managed and the access from Rome is super easy either by train or by car / taxi A memorable tour and so pleased we booked it and had the opportunity to visit such an impressive area. Well done once again Stefania - a great job !!!!!
Our private family tour of Ostia Antica last week was a wonderful experience for me and my husband and our two daughters aged 3 and 5. I am so happy we chose this tour! The guide made the difference. She is a great storyteller and made our visit very vivid and engaging. My daughters have started asking for bed-time stories about the life of ancient Romans!
You may, as I did, find a website which states "compared to Pompeii or Herculaneum, (Ostia Antica) is less impressive and less well preserved". I suppose that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that doesn't happen to be mine. This was the original port of Rome, built on the river Tiber leading up to the city. After the fall of Rome, it could not be defended and was therefore invaded on occasions, causing the population to flee. Over time, sediments buried the city and it was largely forgotten outside of classical texts. Excavations are now bringing it back to an echo of its former self. Unlike Pompeii, which was largely a resort city for the aristocracy and therefore full of houses with rich and interesting artwork, Ostia was a working city. That doesn't mean that all of the residents were poor; then as now people who were good at wheeling and dealing were able to make a very nice living and as a result there are some houses which would once have been impressive. (And still are, in their way.) There is a train from the Porta San Paolo railway station (easily accessible from the Pyramide metro station on the B line, though be aware that that line is often closed for development work on weekends in late 2019) which will take you to a railway station near Ostia Antica. You simply walk over the bridge from the station, and you will arrive at the entrance to the archaeological park. Certainly, you can do a tour of the site by yourself. However in my opinion if you do that you will miss out on understanding many of the details of the city. Certainly the park management has done an excellent job in signposting some of the buildings and even illustrating what they might have looked like in their prime, but even if you read those assiduously you won't pick up on little details such as why there are wells in the centre of the main street, or what the process of going to the baths involved. These seemingly small details make the difference between "oh, this used to be a house", and "yes, I can imagine the family dining here before going to bed in the rooms over there". A good guide, an actual archaeologist, can not merely show you the buildings, but bring them to life with stories of the people who would once have lived and worked in them, and even how the buildings changed over time. As an example, our guide was able to point to a wall and tell us approximately when a dining room was extended by looking at the different construction styles of two parts of the wall. This is the sort of thing that you would never notice for yourself unless you're an archaeologist. It makes the difference between seeing what is left there, and seeing what was once there and, more importantly developing an understanding of it. Our guide, Maria, was exceptional in being able to do this. She is a trained and practising archaeologist, which allowed her to give us insights that we simply would not have been able to get for ourselves. In my opinion, this tour was worth every euro that we paid for it. (And is worth a tip as well, if you feel so inclined.) If you want to see and understand Ostia Antica, this is the way to do it. I would recommend doing an early tour, however, because you will be doing a lot of walking and you will want to be fresh. (You will also want to avoid some tour buses that sometimes arrive later in the day.) You can remain in the city after the tour. The cafe in the park has copped a lot of flak in some reviews I've seen, but we found it to be okay except for the fact that the EFTPOS never seem to work. At the end of the tour, you probably will want a drink and something to eat, and is not the worst place; the food was actually pretty decent. Just make sure that you bring some cash. The souvenir shop is also worth visiting. There are toilet facilities both there, and at the park entrance. I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see this fascinating site.
Private tour for 3 of us. Guide was great. This tour doesn't include hotel pick-up or transport from Rome, but it is worth doing anyway
This was our second visit to Ostia, and this time we really wanted to have someone familiar with the area there to provide us with the background of what we were seeing. Maria, who is a trained Archeologist, provided us a really interesting, in-depth explanation of the many things we saw at Ostia. We felt very fortunate to have someone as knowledgeable as Maria to guide us on our visit to Ostia, and with so much history there, I would strongly recommend anyone visiting there to take a guided tour with her!
I went with my 13-year-old son and we both had a fantastic time. I wasn’t sure if we’d need a guide for Ostia, but I’m certainly glad we did book one. Our guide, Stefania, had such an intimate knowledge of the site that she demonstrated that this tour can be for anyone, regardless of how little or well you understand Classical history. She even went out of her way to indulge my interests in the Hellenistic world by talking about some of the details of the sites I was interested in such as the synagogue, Iseum and the various Mithraea. My son was especially enthralled by the site’s history, and Stefania was able to pitch information just right for him. At the end of the tour, she even gave him a copy of the publication Portus, which he was really taken with and will keep as a momento of his time in Ostia. Had we have gone without a guide, I’m not sure we would have gone away from the site with the level of appreciation we did. It was amazing, and you could easily spend a day exploring everything Ostia has to offer.
We booked the 2.5 hour private tour that ended up being three full hours. Our guide was Paola who knew the place inside and out and just made the place come alive. We highly recommend the tour! BUT, we also recommend doing it in cooler weather - it's a BIG site with lots of walking. Alos it's really easy to get to the site via the train.
Maria did an incredible job keeping our whole family (incl. 6 & 8 yo kids) excited and interested! The length of the tour was perfect.
Three of us went on a private tour with Visit Ostia Antica. It was supposed to be 2-1/2 hours but ended up being a full three hours, and no one complained--it was all fascinating. Our tour guide, Paola, was terrific--an archaeologist with a Ph.D. who knew the place intimately. She was charming and funny and could answer all our questions. She made it all come alive. We recommend this highly.
My husband and I (plus our one-year old) took a short tour and we highly recommend it. Ostia Antica is very easy to get to from downtown Rome and after visiting so many places in Rome, it was such a nice break from the crowd. Our tour guide, Stefania, was excellent. Her description of daily life in Ostia was so interesting that we had to remember to stop paying attention to her but actually look around and see the sites. We were very happy to have a guide who knew exactly where/what to see and can explain what we are looking at with a wealth of knowledge. She met us in front of the park entrance and we ended our tour at the cafeteria. I'd definitely recommend the long tour since there's so much to see, but for our one-year old, 90 minutes was perfect. I'd also recommend bringing water, walking shoes and sunglasses. If you have a baby on a stroller like us, definitely bring a baby carrier too because the ground/path is not always stroller-friendly. At the cafeteria, there is a restroom with a changing table and the cafeteria has a high chair.
