Itinerary
When visiting Rome, travelers will have the opportunity to explore some of the most iconic and historically significant landmarks in the world, including the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. These ancient sites provide a fascinating glimpse into the grandeur and splendor of ancient Rome. The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is a massive elliptical structure located in the heart of Rome. Built in the 1st century AD, it was once the largest amphitheater ever constructed. Adjacent to the Colosseum lies the Roman Forum, a sprawling complex that served as the heart of political, social, and commercial life in ancient Rome. The Forum was the center of the city's governance and hosted numerous important structures and buildings. Perched on the Palatine Hill, overlooking the Roman Forum and the Circus Maximus, lies the Palatine Hill, one of Rome's seven hills. This historical site was the residence of emperors and aristocrats in ancient Rome.

They messed up on the names on the tickets. Tickets have to match the passport or else they may deny entry. Then when I pointed the mistake, they said they couldn’t fix it. Luckily I was able to still get my family in but it was very inconvenient explaining to the Colosseum staff that Trip Advisor personnel made an error on my tickets.
Guide was very helpful in explaining the tickets and audio
Amazing experience, we had access to everything we wanted to do and the ticket collection with the voucher was very easy to navigate. They explained the best way to go to see it all and their audio guides/maps were very useful. We were nervous going through a separate company to get tickets but it all went extremely well and we recommended 👍
The actual visit to the Colosseum & Forum was amazing, but we only met a person who showed us how to download the WhatsApp link and we did the rest ourselves. I don't think the cost of the tickets warranted the actual trip. You can easily do this yourself for a fraction of the cost of the ticket. Just go to the ticket booth.
Lots of information missing from the post. Our time slot was for 1030, as it’s summer and we are traveling with a baby. We received a message the night before on where to meet, and telling us we first had to spend an hour and a half at the Roman Forum, then we could go to the coliseum. The whole reason we booked a self guided entrance was we wanted to be quick, knowing we wouldn’t be able to spend all day in the sun with our baby. I replied to the message. They never responded so we showed up at our time slot. We then waited 15 min while they talked in a crowded area to other people who had booked as well. It was very unorganized and a lot of wasted time. They then wanted me to download an app to message me our tickets, I refused and they finally emailed them to me. Then they said we had to spend 2 hours at the Roman Forum first, and couldn’t enter the coliseum until 1230. I explained we didn’t want to see the forum, and intentionally booked a 1030 reservation so we could get the baby in and out before the heat of the day. They said there was nothing they could do, and we couldn’t enter until 1230. All that said, the tickets did get is in just fine and everything, but the page doesn’t represent the timeline well, which was very inconvenient when traveling with a family.
Good and very helpful people, when i was searching for the right metro i received a call and i was helped and welcomed very nicely. I understand money needs to come in, its just that about €70 is a lot for a place like this. Colosseum is not for making money but for awareness of what happened there. Much people went there for amusement in ancient Rome but those who were fighting gave there lifes and a lot of them in the Name of Jesus Christ, thats important to remember so my compliment for the cross that i saw inside, it was placed on a good spot and i saw a dove sitting next to it when looking at it. I prayed there i Jesus Name myself and asked God to help visitors realize what happend at this place in the past. For the reason of making people aware He will bless it and money will come automatically, no need for high prices, wanna atrackt more people? Share the truth about the persecution and share the gospel, then He will attrack more and more visitors and no worry bout money. We received the Gospel for free so no need to make money on that, lower the prices and share, He will take care of the rest. Be blessed!
The audio tour was hard to follow and locations were not well marked. The meeting point was difficult to find and explanation of signing into the app and where to go was not the best. Would opt for a human guided tour next time.
Very hospitable tour guides. We were confused when we arrived to the coliseum. Our contacts called us and pointed us to the right location.
This tour relies on your ability to use your own phone data to listen. When we booked we understood we would need our phones to listen to the audio, what we didn’t understand that if would have to stream live inside the colosseum where obviously we could not get reception. If we had been sent the links after paying but prior to getting to the colosseum we would have downloaded them. At any rate, we go to skip the line, which was very long, so the two stars is for that reason alone.
Pickup and the delivery of the tickets was very smooth. However, it wasn't clear on the ticket that we could only enter Palatine Hill and Roman Forum once. it was clearly stated about the Colosseum Arena, but the way i understood the ticket is that we could go the day before and the day after to Roman Forum/Palatine Hill Area. However, we were told at the gate that we could only enter Roman Forum ONCE, we couldn't go back AGAIN the day after. that's the part i didn't understand.
Unfortunately, we got lost using the metro and missed the guided tour. However, Raj was super helpful and friendly. He gave us a self guided option and instructed us quite well on how to walk the self guided tour of the colloseum and later the Roman Forum and Palatine Gardens.
It was the worst tour ever. The tour guide found my snap within two minutes which is uncomfortable. He stared at me for the whole tour...
Not happy, 2nd time TripAdvisor has changed our booking re Colosseum!! Also can’t change another booking as it’s not in booking page to change! Very disappointing. Can’t contact TripAdvisor!!!!
The colosseum itself was fantastic but the “tour” was worthless. The double the face price of the ticket was to have some random Indian fella explain how to read a map. The “audio tour” was a podcast that barely associated with anything and not tied to what was seen. Do your best to buy the ticket directly, basically scalping.
The colosseum was everything and more. The whole experience was amazing and made so easy. On the day of our visit we received a WhatsApp message in the morning to say our tickets would be sent to us a couple of hours before our tour which they were. They also sent a link for the audio tour. The message said where we could find a guide who would be waiting if we needed him but also as we had tickets you can just go in so you don’t need to go and find the guide if you don’t want to. It was all made very easy and the experience was great. This is an audio guided tour so you can walk round at your own pace. We preferred this rather than in a group on a guided tour as we could just go at our own pace and take it all in. Highly recommend . Thank you for making our tour so easy.
Confusion would not begin to explain how hard it was with the limited information given to find the meeting spot. Police other tour operators and local residents sent us in circles. I was finally where I thought the meeting spot was and asked another tour operator who obviously worked there daily for help. She rambles on in broken (Italian) English and tells me that this was about where I would later find my tour operator. If I was not within ear shot of a Sanfransisco couple who were on the same tour we would have walked away. Luckily the Californian said the tour operator was right behind me with his sign between his knees. Easy to spot in a shoulder to shoulder crowd! The tour operator was basically someone who printed us a ticket. He then in very broken (Indian) English tried to explain how we needed to conduct our self guided tour. It was literally like taking to tech support in India for a problem solving a rejection of a medical bill that you know is covered by your insurance company. I got about half of his word after asking twice. I would have preferred to get the ticket printed out at home or put it in my apple wallet than ever suffer through this experience again. 👎 Don from Maryland
This was simply a ticket reseller. Worked out well enough because they helped us get the right tickets at the right time, but I suspect we could have gotten them cheaper directly from the colosseum website. It was difficult to sync the audio guide with where we were at the site, but the information in it was interesting to hear.
I’m glad I booked from start to finish it was amazing
Too crowded, not organized, advertised “full package” but did not include some sections. Very hot. Too crowded for a stroller. Not handicap friendly at all. Many stairs and climbing. Pretty miserable to be honest. Just look at from the outside.
We booked our tickets and you get a voucher and have to read the instructions on how to get your tickets, it was pretty simple, we meet a tour guide outside the train station near the Colosseum they had a sign and we collected our tickets. We had full access tickets and we had the best time, would highly recommended
The meetup area was conveniently located right outside the metro station and getting in the Coloseum was fast. Be sure you have a WhatsApp account as that is the way the tickets and audio guide are sent to you once you meet with TravelR. Also, be sure to bring headphones for your phone as that’s how you can listen to the audio guide. There wasn’t access to the arena underground but access to the arena floor was really cool.
The staff who met us were really good gave us some great advice to miss the worst queues every thing went smoothly and we had an amazing time
A terrible experience. TravelR completely ruined our experience. They spelt all of our names incorrectly on the entrance tickets. When we saw our names spelt incorrectly, we asked the agency if we would still be able to get inside the Coliseum and they said, “It’s no problem”. IT WAS A PROBLEM. We waited in line for the Coliseum and when we finally got to the front, the workers said our ticket names did not match our IDs and we were turned away. And we no longer had time to even try to buy different tickets. TravelR wasted our time, our money and most unfortunately we never got the chance to go inside the Coliseum. If anyone actually reads these… We need a refund.
The Colosseum was absolutely magnificent! I was truly in awe seeing it in person. The Palatine Hill section was phenomenal — it felt like discovering a hidden city within a city. The history, ruins, and architecture were beyond anything I could have imagined. Our guides explained everything very clearly and set us up perfectly throughout the tour. We enjoyed the entire experience immensely and would highly recommend it!
The guy who we met to get our tickets was fabulous. Clearly explained where to go to avoid the biggest queues etc & how to use the audio etc.
Great day out Our tour guide was brilliant (can't remember his name but he was from Boston) Very insightful with knowledge of the history of Rome and made the tour funny and interesting. He had great photo spots too Definitely recommend Thank you for a great few hours
Wonderful tour! Mateo was extremely knowledgeable about the history and significance of each site we saw. His enthusiasm was infectious. We would highly re this tour.
I booked a paid “guided tour” of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, but it was extremely disappointing. This is not a real guided tour. There is no guide and no proper organisation. What you actually get is just a ticket and access to an audio recording that cannot be downloaded. You are forced to rely on mobile data inside the sites, where internet reception is poor—making the “guided” experience frustrating and unreliable. Similar audio guides can be found for free once you are already inside. There was no access to the underground or the attic of the Colosseum, which was not clearly communicated. We also had to wait in a long queue to enter the Roman Forum, despite booking a “tour.” The only positive aspect is that the ticket includes entry to museums on Palatine Hill. Overall, this felt like a waste of money and quite misleading. I strongly recommend buying tickets directly from the official Rome ticket office—you will get essentially the same experience for less money, less hassle, and far less frustration.
We opted for a self-guided audio tour of the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum and it was amazing! I am not in to history by any means but pictures do not do this justice. Make sure you wear comfy shoes, there are lots of cobbles and hills.
Very easy to navigate the tickets and audio book. Getting into the monuments was a breeze! Had lots of fun.
The tour I chose specifically so that me and my sons (14 and 8) could tour around the colosseum at our own pace. My sons cannot bear walking with a tour guide in the heat and adhering to a tour guides pace. We were able to meet the tour operator who sent our tickets by WhatsApp, gave us the information we needed and we then downloaded the map and audio guide (we had our own AirPods/iphones) and were on our way independently. This tour provided us with links to the maps of the colosseum, Roman Forum and Palestine Hill and prompt and efficient entry. Note however the arena access ticket gives you access to level 1, level 2 and the arena floor BUT NOT the underground. You need to purchase the underground tour separately and typically with a guide.
Great site, a lot to pack in so allocate suitable time for it alongside Forum and Palatine. Raju was a helpful host, gave me all the right details before allowing me to see it independently. Worth the price as it rolls all three sites into one with the full experience of each.
Collecting tickets from seller worked well. Felt a bit sketchy at first and worried we’d bought fake tickets but he was helpful and we got in without issue. Would have been good to know we only had a specific time to visit the arena floor area - we tried to go towards the end of the visit but officials denied us entry telling us we had missed our slot. Not a disaster but irritating. All in all the colosseum is a must visit, so glad we went.
Super busy felt like a vit of a conveyor belt which detracted from the experience. However, the grandure & all the features/history make it a must. Hate to see what its like in a busy season!
It was a good experience. The audio guide had good information. Would have been better with an actual guide but it allowed us to go at our own pace which was nice.
Paid over the price for the ticket for what you get. Booked wrong day originally and even though I still went and booked again for a different day, I had to pay again and did not receive a refund.
Stunning and epic; particularly on a beautifully sunny day. We loved the fact it’s not overly exploited or treated like a museum. The guide where we validated our tickets was really helpful.
The colosseum is amazing and has to be visited. However, pre-ordering tickets on Trip Advisor was a big mistake. Trying to locate a random person in a huge crowd to obtain entry tickets took hours and was complete chaos. Trip Advisor=Viator=TravelR=one lady with a phone and a piece of cardboard=will never do again.
Great experience, on must do when you are in Rome. This tickets includes all the amenities of the Coliseum and Roman Forum.
Great organisation and audio guide, easy to follow, well worth it for the views and experience - would definitely recommend
Visiting the Colosseum was an unforgettable highlight of my trip to Italy. The history, scale, and architectural detail are absolutely breathtaking in person. Walking through the arena felt like stepping back in time. The site is very well organised, and even with the crowds, the experience was smooth and enjoyable. Highly recommend booking tickets in advance and taking the time to explore the surrounding Roman Forum as well. A must-see in Rome!
Our tour started at 10:30 and were told we couldn’t get into the Colosseum Arena until 1. We had to visit the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill first which wasn’t our plan. This was not communicated to us before hand, so be aware.
I have booked tickets for me, my wife, and my daughter at 2 PM. You do not get your tickets by e-mail but should meet someone the day of the visit at a given address..actually, there is no real office but a guy standing next to a kiosk to transfer you the tickets on your phone. Since everything closes at 4 PM, at the end you have only two hours to visit everything..two hours is the time needed for the Colloseum with all security checks. Apparently, you can go to the other places the next day before 2 PM but this was not foreseen in our schedule. Moreover, pay attention to order a ticket for your child even if it is free...without that, your child cannot enter for the visit. This happened to me (not clearly explained on the web site) but there was no chance to find a solution and I finally did the tour alone...being almost excluded because I arrived finally at 2:30 PM with the time lost to find a possible solution ! I finally bought two new tickets for an additional visit for my wife and my daugher...so waste of time and money with the current organization ! but the visit is WORTH !
Very clear instructions to meet the guide. He provided us with our tickets and forwarded the audio guide to our devices. Just heads up, you will need cellar service to listen to the audio guide as you walk.
Hi, I do not normally post but my family is five had booked this tour prior to arriving in Italy. Then on the evening before, I got a phone call asking if I could switch it back 4 days. They all on holidays it seems but only realised this when they finished up the evening before. Avoid I would suggest as blatantly inconsiderate and unreliable.
Was given a time to meet to collect tickets. It was well mapped out in our instructions, downstairs at the metro then behind the green kiosk. There we met our 2 Viator representatives holding up the tour company name. We were booked to go to colosseum at 10:30 and we were sent tickets via what’s app after sharing my number with the instructor. He then went through the entrance and what we were entitled to see. He also went through how to get in to the Roman forum with little queuing. We then headed into colosseum, through a little queue for individual tickets. I scanned in the barcode for my party of 5. Then through airport security and passport control, for matching names. We were then left to our own devices, very busy and crowded. We had a link to an audio guide, but didn’t really listen to it. We went round the lower section and then fully round level 1. We missed the access to the gladiator level as should have done that at the start and were at the exit by this time. I don’t think there was a way back as it was all one way. The building was magnificent to see and took 3 hours to do. We came out and walked along the street to get a much needed sandwich and gelato. Then went into the Roman forum for a leisurely walk round Ancient Rome. All great to see and spent another 3 hours in here.
“Tour” was basically entrance fee—no guide. Started at 4 pm. We were told Palatine Hill was open til 6 and we could stay until 7:30. We arrived at gate at 5:45 and were not allowed in. Closing time was actually 5:30. TOTAL WASTE OF $$
I would not recommend choosing this tour as the only thing it really does is to get you tickets to Colosseum and nothing else. If you can get the tickets yourself, then definitely skip this tour. We met the contact person in from of the Colosseum who have us our tickets. He sent some audio files on WhatsApp and advised to use them during our visit to the Colosseum. The price for the Colosseum ticket is only 18 Eur so if you can buy that in advance then skip this tour.
Great review! The guide explains everything you need to know to get into the coliseum quick!! The audio tour was very good and gave a lot of information!
