Very interesting. Stephan was great at explaining the history of the Castle. Learned a lot. Would recommend this tour.

Itinerary
Castel Sant’Angelo was originally built as a monumental tomb for the Emperor Hadrian. Already during the Late Roman Empire it became a stronghold for its size and strategic location to the north of the city, where most of the invasions came from. It was then turned into an impregnable papal fortress during the middle ages and improved all throughout the renaissance times, featuring a large garrison, prisons and papal apartments. This castle is directly connected to the Vatican by the means of a covered passageway called “Passetto di Borgo”. The pope would use this gateway to take refuge in the Castle. The papal apartments were specifically designed to make the pope comfortable during his potential stay in the fortress. The variety of purposes and its continuity of use throughout the centuries makes Castle Sant’Angelo one of the most charming and iconic monuments of the Eternal City. By visiting this place, you can basically enjoy the whole history of Rome, all in one go.

This place is amazing with views to die for. Climb all the way to the top and go in late afternoon to see the stunning sunset over the Vatican. Guide Alec was full of amazing information about Rome and the castle throughout the centuries. Very engaging and highly recommend.
Educative regarding important periods of Italian history. Guide was excellent and polite. Highly recommend it.
Sylvia was most welcoming and very informative about the castle. She was very willing to answ34 questions, too.
The view from the roof top is magnificent. Don’t miss it. Sylvia the tour guide is full of roman knowledge. She shared many interesting stories along the way.
Our guide, Fe was incredible! She was so full of energy, fun and passion for Castel Sant Angelo it was infectious. You could not but help being swept up in Fe's enthusiasm - she really brought Castel Sant Angelo to life. I wish I could give Fe 10 stars!
Sooo many steps. Navigating the steps wasn’t easy sometimes there are no rails. But worth the eggort
Lovely tour by Alec, who is very knowledgeable and friendly
It was just like the movies, the castle I mean! Great tour and even a greater tour guide definetly made the experience enjoyable! Highly recommend! Thank you!
Castel Sant’Angelo is a gem in Rome. Definitely an amazing visit after the Vatican, helps discovering fascinating stories of popes, artists and noble families. Amazing and caring staff and tour company!
Castel Sant’Angelo was such a fascinating place to explore, full of history, hidden passages, and incredible views over Rome from the top. Our guide shared brilliant stories about its past as a fortress, prison, and papal refuge, which really brought the castle to life. The mix of history and breathtaking scenery made this visit one of the highlights of our trip highly recommended! If you are visiting the Vatican one morning, I would pair it with a late afternoon tour (we did 1630) - if your feet can take it.
The Castel Sant'Angelo tour was absolutely captivating. From crossing the angel-lined Ponte Sant’Angelo to exploring the castle’s hidden chambers and papal apartments, every moment felt like stepping back in time. Our guide was fantastic—knowledgeable, engaging, and full of stories that brought centuries of Roman history to life. The rooftop views overlooking the Tiber River and St. Peter’s Basilica were breathtaking. It’s incredible to think this structure evolved from a mausoleum to a fortress, prison, and papal refuge. This tour is a must for anyone who loves history, architecture, or simply wants to experience one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks in depth.
We had an outstanding time touring Castel Sant’Angelo with Alec as our tour guide! Tickets were easily purchased, would found our guide easily and all expectations were met/exceeded. Alec provided a fun and informative experience while answering all of our inquiries! He was knowledgeable in all things related to the site, its role in history, the significance of details found throughout … and so much more! Highly recommended City Walkers Tours, and especially Alec.
We had Oleg as our tour guide he is incredibly well informed and indeed hilarious. The tour was great and at the end you get at the top of the castle with the most amazing panoramic view of Rome. I’d definitely do it again in the future!
Such an interesting building and history. Our guide Alec was full of historical information regarding the history of Castel Sant’Angelo. We very much enjoyed!
Extremely knowledgeable guide! Wonderful tour!!!!!! Highly recommended for all. Easy walking, some steps but very manageable.
The Castel St. Angelo was certainly worth the visit, but our guide, Alec, was so very knowledgeable that he made the tour quite memorable. Without a doubt, the best tour guide we’ve had during our stay in Rome. He knew so much not only about the Castel, but also about Roman politics, the Vatican, the colosseum, papal history and the powerful families that established Italy. Just a wonderful tour.
The tour guide was very experienced and knew the castle history well. The audio headsets were great. The castle itself without the narrative would have been a letdown, as others passing us by missed out on a lot of the detail. The views from the top and the casual cafe with associated seating were classic relaxation in the hectic tourist background of the city. This trip was well worth the cost.
Tour guide was wonderful. She gave a rich history of what was built as a memorial and later became homes of two popes, a fort, and a jail. Great views of the Vatican and surrounding city. Highly recommend.
Oleg was wonderful! He had a wealth of knowledge and could answer all my many questions. Definitely a 5 star tour. Thank you so much Jeanne and Chor
Sylvia walked us though this amazing site. Her knowledge and presentation of the history was remarkable. The views over Rome on the top were breathtaking
The historical information the guide shred was tremendous; she deserves a huge commendation!. The castle and the uses were very interesting to me; I loved learning bout the references to the popes and the prisoners and the weaponry. I definitely recommend this tour!
This was a fantastic tour! We loved the enthusiasm and knowledge of our guide! We highly recommend this tour!
My husband and I had a wonderful tour with Alec. He was so informative and we learned so much more than if we had toured the castle by ourselves. Highly Recommend!
Alec was a very informative and knowledgeable tour guide. We took this tour on our last day in Rome and it really helped our understanding of the history of Rome from the beginning to the fall to the start of Christianity. This is a must for all traveling to Rome
We are so very fortunate and thankful to have Silvia as our tour guide! First, I thought I had booked a small group tour, so it was a very pleasant surprise when we arrived at the entrance of Castel Sant’Angelo and saw her holding up a paper with my name on it. We were 10 mins early, so I thought we were going to wait for the other participants. Then Silvia told us we could already start if we want, as it was a private tour! A very fortunate turn of event for me and my mother. We loved how Silvia shared with us the immensely interesting history of the Hadrian, the castle and how it eventually changed from a tomb to a fortress to the pope’s residence — Silvia’s story narration feels so organic, as if we are listening to a family or a relative who is welcoming us to Rome and who would love for us to learn more about it and fall in love with the city she grew up in. The entire tour felt heartwarming as it was also educational; and, it was also very comfortably paced. There was enough time to take photos, separately listen to Silvia’s stories and to absorb and marvel at the things we were seeing inside the Castel. When she would point interesting features to us, she would remind us of details in case they are related to something we have previously seen (both inside the castle and in our other tours of Rome like The Vatican). So it never feels like an overload of information, because Silvia helps us piece together all our experiences and the various things we have seen in the castle plus other parts of Rome. The view at the top of Castel Sant’Angelo was the best, especially as evening set in and Rome was adorned with enchanting lights. We truly enjoyed our time walking around Castel Sant’Angelo with Silvia. Best of all, her knowledge of the city really feels like it comes from her personal experience of living in it, that she could also help me with my questions about points of interests other than Castel Sant’Angelo itself. Silvia is such a magnificent company that will make anyone appreciate Rome even more! I would be very happy (and lucky) should I have her as our tour guide again in our next visit! Thank you so very much Silvia, for the wonderful tour and more so, for making us feel very much at home and well taken care of by you! We hope to see you again soon and also try your delicious pasta dishes! :)
This was such an amazing and well guided tour. There is no possible way that you would be able to go into depth and the historical significants behind the castle without a tour guide, and it surprised us how overlooked and peaceful this castle was in Rome. Our tour guide (Lorenzo) was fabulous, fluent with English, and so cheerful. Our family was so happy to have him and because of him we all left smarter and more knowledgeable than before. Overall we highly recommend this tour because of the memories that you will make, the sights to see, and the views the castle has to offer.
We had a private tour with Lorenzo from the Citywalkers group. Lorenzo personally contacted me before the start of the tour to make it really easy to find him. His English was very good and the tour was very informative and interesting. He was a great guide and I would recommend him to anyone for the Castel Sant’Angelo tour.
Lorenzo was vwry nice and taught us many interesring things abour the castle. He was very polite and answered all the quesrions we had
More than a guide Lorenzo felt like a friend, a super knowledgeable one to be honest, it was just him and me, so it was a super special tour, he even accompanied me to buy my biglietto di autobus. I would book him again. Grazzie mile
Lorenzo was a fantastic tour guide. My wife and I were the only ones on the tour, which gave us the ability to ask lots of questions and have a more personalized experience. He bought us both a cup of coffee from the cafe near the top. We had a chance to chat with and get to know our tour guide better while sipping our coffee and enjoying the view.
The castle was amazing. It has beautiful art, history, prison cells, weapons, amazing views of Rome. It turned out that we were the only couple on the tour. They changed the time-but emailed us and asked if it was ok before and it worked out for us. Our guide hadn't been to the castle since COVID and was a relatively new guide, so he did not quite know where he was going, since they changed the traffic flow, but he did a good job and spent a lot more than 2 hours on the tour.
Our guide was Lorenzo, he was a very good guide! Gave us lots of information. Would definitely recommend
Simone was great at explaining the history of the colosseum and showing us about! High recommend this tour - plus Simone’s humour was great - go Simone! 😎✌🏽
We want to thank our guide Alessandra for accompanying us with her professionalism and kindness to discover Castel Sant'Angelo: a wonderful experience.
Very interesting and pleasant visit. A special thank you to our guide Mrs. Antonella Fusco, a very professional and prepared person. Thanks to his vocation for transmitting his knowledge, he was able to attract the interest of three friends who, at times, were not particularly dedicated to the necessary concentration. Thank you!!!
We were accompanied by Dr. Alessandra Tosti to Castel Sant’Angelo and it was an exciting visit. We were guided by an excellent professional who made us relive in a great way the history of the place visited with enormous historical competence. Excellent experience.
Fascinating visit inside Castel S.Angelo thanks to the preparation and professionalism of Mrs. Alessandra who let her passion for her work shine through every word.
Wonderful tour with Alessandra an experienced guide , nice, very competent and engaging for the great passion that shines through his words.
Great idea of guided tour for small groups. Even luckier because we were alone with the guide, Alessandra, truly exceptional! The excellent preparation and lively passion for the subject with which she managed to "catapult" us into the past stood out. Do not underestimate the idea of combining images with description! Brava Alessandra, thank you!!! Vincenzo and Raffaela
