My MTB bike was in poor shape. Chain fell off twice (lucky I had rag with, and knew how to fix), and gears kept changing by themselves, helmet was also in poor shape, and rubber handle bar pads almost non-exsistant. Attendant ask if everything was OK, I told him no, and problems I had. He just ignored me. Should have offered partial refund, thus this complaint

We highly recommend a visit to Appian Way, it's wonderful to immerse in history and a good to get away from the city centre as part of your trip. Very happy with the service we got from Bicycle Roma, they accommodated a last minute change in schedule due to bad weather and sorted us out when we had a problem with one of the bikes. Great value for money all round.
This was our 4th time renting bikes in Italy and definitely the worst experience so far in terms of the bikes themselves. The bikes we all got are "conversions" (normal bikes with mounted batteries and replaced hub motors, no where near as good as real e-bikes). It was immediately obvious that these bikes get HEAVY use, of the e-bikes we rented in Italy these clearly were the highest mileage with the least smooth ride and all were in need of some kind of maintenance. We returned and change out several bikes because one had an issue with the derailleur and kept shifting off the chain, and another the power assist kept jerking the bike. The bikes themselves have no baskets, water-bottle holders or any way to store anything while you ride. The checkout point itself doesn't have wifi and so it made it challenging to complete the waiver on site with cell issues. Also, the teen who rented us the bikes sent us to the wrong direction and we biked for a long time before realizing there was no way to get into the aqueduct and ruins park the way we went (once again, I couldn't pull up google maps due to cell issues, not their fault but a map or something would have been good). The Appia itself is beautiful and extremely bumpy, be warned, unless you go on the dirt sides off-road which was fun but definitely would be hard for anyone less confident on a bicycle or with reduced mobility. Overall we're glad we did it and enjoyed riding along ruins was an amazing experience. This place did heavy business all day, I encourage them to use some of that profit to upgrade their bikes, add basic things like a basket or way to hold a water bottle, and printed maps of the sites.
We had a good time seeing the Roman country side with our guide Daniella. We saw the aqueducts and the Appian way as well as through the mountain paths.
Michele was an excellent and knowledgeable guide. The trip included many interesting highlights and historical sites. The bike worked well, and it was safe.
Great bike, great people. Very helpful and friendly. Be aware that dedicated cycling roads are scarce in Rome.
Alessio was very knowledgeable and passionate about the Via Appia. He got us there and back safely and was a pleasure to be with.
A perfect experience on the Appia Antica with Bicycle.roma! This rental shop is located directly on the Appia Antica: the bikes were in perfect condition, and the scenery was unique—a place where history, art, and nature truly meet. I highly appreciated the staff's kindness; they provided us with a detailed GPX track to help us explore the Appia Antica and the Aqueduct Park. There is also an excellent bistro on-site where we had a delicious meal and a great draft beer. Tip: Plan for at least 3 hours to enjoy the route in total relaxation. Highly recommended!
The scenery was fabulous - however the e bikes were shorter age and need of much needed major maintenance. New bikes probably best way to go . Brakes, a bit dodgy , the brake cable on my bike was held on by black tape. The bike seats very uncomfortable and padding worn out as are old.
Paul was extremely helpful in us getting set up and oriented. My wife crashed on the route on a gravel area and Alessio came quickly and was very caring and kind. We would highly recommend their services but be careful on the gravel!
The provided guide map was appreciated and the ride and sites were beautiful. We ran into an unfortunate situation where a nearly fully charged battery completely died approx halfway thru the route. I got plenty of unexpected exercise peddling back up to the bike rental. After a brief exchange and request for additional time, I was directed by the attendant to call and speak with the owner. The owner listened to my experience and request, then promptly spoke to the attendant over the phone. Within minutes I had a different bike with a fully charged battery and we were back on our way to finish our tour. Unexpected things happen in business - batteries go bad. My compliments to the owner for promptly taking care of the issue which resulted in a finished bike tour and a happy experience overall. As a business owner myself - if I had one (constructive) criticism, it would be to empower your staff to recognize issues such as this. Do not insinuate even for a moment that the customer is at fault for a premature dead battery. The attendant should make the call to the owner, not the customer. The conversation should never need to escalate to the point of frustration, for both the customer and attendant. All in all my son and I had a very enjoyable experience and would 100% do it again and recommend others do the same. Our minor issue was resolved promptly and properly by the owner, which I very much appreciated.
Great experience, it was one of the highlights of our Rome visit. The bikes were in good shape and we didn't have any tire issues.
Great way to see Rome without the crowds. Recommend you get a park map, take an extra phone battery and a refillable water bottle
Riccardo was excellent! He was knowledgeable about the sites and was able to navigate our group safely in and out of the sites and through the Roman traffic. Highly recommend.
Riccardo was the best tour guide! He made sure everyone stays together and genuinely cared about the group. We had so much fun during our bicycle tour and he explained everything very well. We learned a lot during our afternoon trip.
Fabulous staff and a great morning out - you only need 2 hours as it’s hard going on the cobbles. Take ID. They were very accommodating as we forgot so we left our phone. Kept safely. Lovely cafe next door
So much fun! Beautiful way to see some beautiful areas of Rome
We had a great day on Via Appia and Bicycle Roma were very easy to find and fantastic to deal with. I highly recommend
Really helpful and friendly staff and great bikes. You don’t need 4 hours - 2 enough over the cobbles. A good break from the busy city. Take ID
We had the most wonderful experience with Nima our guide on our Appian Way bike tour. Traveling as a family with three children, we were looking for something engaging, safe, and enjoyable for everyone, and Nima exceeded all expectations. He was incredibly kind, patient, and attentive throughout the entire experience, making sure each of us felt comfortable and confident. His knowledge of the Appian Way and its history was exceptional, yet he delivered it in such an engaging and accessible way that even the kids were fascinated. What truly stood out was how effortlessly he made the tour feel fun and relaxed while maintaining a strong sense of safety and care. Everything was smooth, easy, and thoughtfully managed from start to finish. A truly memorable experience that we would highly recommend to any family visiting Rome.
*****5 stars! Great team, great & comfortable bikes!*****
The park is absolutely beautiful! Ruins, remnants of castles, and catacombs! We saw a cow many cows with a shepherd and also sheep! We loved it. The bike dudes were extremely helpful, kind, and courteous. I would recommend this highly!
It was our first experience with electrical bicycles and we had a great time! It was very fun to explore the Appia Antica by bicycle :) Special thanks to Firas for being so nice and helpful! If you happen to consider to rent some electrical bikes to explore the Appia Antica this is the best option :) Thank youuu!
Easy rental process (bring a license as you’ll need to leave a photo ID), good bike rental prices, Firas was friendly, and the area is fantastic - full of rich history and natural beauty. Having a map would’ve been helpful. We found a bike path that was away from cars and a much smoother ride than over the cobblestones. We ate at Il Giardino di Giulia e fratelli - it was a delightful experience from the moment we stepped foot into the restaurant. Guilia was so sweet and helpful. We ordered the meat platter and it didn’t disappoint.. oh my goodness, it was delish. We made a lot of wonderful memories that day along the Appian Way. Highly recommend!
Great bike trip- the staff were knowledgeable and friendly-equipment and maps were great. The route was so beautiful and not crowded and remote in places…loved it!
Great, fast service! We rented 2 e-bikes and enjoyed the ride along Appian Way and through the Aqueducts. Be aware that you have to take main and side roads to reach Aqueducts trail. Appian Way is no-car cobblestone road one way and back, about 8km total. There is a small cafe adjacent to the rental place where u can rest after the ride.
We had so much fun! The bikes were great quality and Manuele was knowledgeable and very personable. We would definitely recommend!
Had a great time cycling on a Sunday morning, everything was good & would recommend it to anyone wanting easy to find cycle hire
This is a great way to see Rome especially if you have teenages that want something a bit different to the normal sight seeing. It was fun and our guide was patient, friendly, interesting and very knowledgeable. We had a lot of fun and even if you have not been on a bike for over 20 years as my friend had not., after a few minutes practice she was confident to come along. I highly recommend this company. I think this was one of my favourite things to do in Rome. I would definitely book this again when I return..
This was my sons’ favorite experience in Rome. It’s a wonderful combination of history/archaeology and natural beauty.
We booked the excursion four months in advance. We flew in on an overnight flight from the US. We took a taxi to the location only to find they were closed for a mental break day. There was no one there at the café or the bike rental place. We arrived to a note on the door saying they were closed for a mental rest day. Neither place appeared to be open for the season, although it was June. There were no bikes to be seen behind the locked gate and the cafe tables and chairs were all piled in a corner. Mara at the contact number was helpful and attempted to make it right. She said she could get bikes there within the hour, but when I asked about the maps and itineraries I had read about she said there were none. The person delivering the bikes could make suggestions. She also said the catacombs would be closed from 12-2 for the next two hours. That was not mentioned at the time of booking. As we had a tour event back at the hotel to attend, Mara gave us a full refund and offered to refund our taxi ride back to the hotel. That was very nice. It was a long way to go to start our trip in such a disappointing way. We thought we had found the perfect jet lag activity. The place was nothing like the pictures of the “likely to sell out” location.
The bike rental place was easy to find. The e-bikes were in good shape. We enjoyed our bike ride and the ruins along the way. The stone road is tricky at times but we used the dirt path when possible. The map is ok but it is easy to miss turns.
e-Bikes were fine, the chaps at the rental place were all good. We booked independent of a tour, and caught metro train, then bus to Appia. We also had dreadful time getting lost in the park. In hindsight - book a tour riding bikes from Rome city centre itself. Be a hang of a lot easier than what we did. City centre would only be 15mins tops from the Appian Way on E bikes.
Emanuele, Marco, & Peppo; gave us the fun and exciting experience on bikes. Emanuele knowledge of Roman history and the Ancient Roma and the Aquaducts is Ottimo!! He made sure of our safety and answer any questions we asked. Marco did a fantastic job filming our adventure! The Catacombs was such great experience and adventure! There is so much History on the bike tour! I Highly recommend all to do this tour and get the experience of a life time and History lesson! We saw the Best site of history!
Emanuele was great, he took us to great sightseeing points and had deep knowledge of the history of the area. He was attentive to our needs including watching the weather for us and taking all the photos we desired. I really enjoyed hanging with him for the afternoon. Also the pizza spot he recommended near the Circo Massimo was the best we had in Rome!
The bike hire location is great - basically integrated with the Appian Way Cafe ( cnr Via Cecilia Metelli) with a rustic outdoor area and decent coffee and snacks, plus a bathroom. We got buses to Appia Pignatelli then walked 10 minutes to the cafe. Paul was friendly and helpful, e bikes were good. The main section of the Appian Way from here is south. You'd need probably a full 4 hours of riding to go down and around to the Aquaduct Park and back without stopping anywhere. We went south about 7 miles - visited the Villa Quintili for 40 min or so , and then turned around to get back to the cafe in 3 hours. That is, we rode only on the old Appian Way, not on any connecting roads with traffic etc. 3 hours was enough for us on the fairly bumpy Way! Then we walked north to the other monuments inc. S. Sebastian catacombes ( highly recommended) and caught a bus back to the city. It was a great experience and probably better on those days where cars are not allowed on the Way (Sundays and public holidays). We went on Liberation Day public holiday. (Though residents and delivery vans and visitors to the more substantial restaurants north of the cafe still drive on it).
I really enjoyed this bike experience. But! It can be very difficult at times so go for the adventure. The beefy electric bikes are a must. Even then, if you’re not really good with bikes, it will be challenging at times. The rental place was very good and customer friendly.
Beautiful country side. Easy ride. Very few cars. Lots of ruins and relics along the way. The springs flowers were in bloom. A great getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.
On time meet up, friendly courteous staff, knowledgeable historical significance of various sites and above and beyond desire to ensure we had a good experience with couple of unplanned stops along the way. ‘Alessio’ was super. Thanks guys.
Friendly service, good mountain bikes and the Appian Way is stunning. The cobbles are bumpy but you can ride around most of them. Don’t forget to buy return bus tickets in advance for journey back into Rome. Highlight of our trip!
The Appian Way is beautiful. The bikes we rented were perfectly serviceable. We asked for helmets (they were available but not offered at first). They may or may not have been cleaned between uses. The road is crazy bumpy in spots - be ready for that! Also - make sure to arrange your return transportation *before* you go!!! We were very nearly stranded there on a Sunday afternoon, as there are no taxis and cell coverage is very spotty.
The bikes are good, comfortable. The Via Appia is gorgeous! But the big stones are hard to bike over (you can go in the dirt path on the side because the patches of big stones aren’t that long). Trust me, you want an electric mountain bike unless you are a pro bicyclist. I did Via Appia and the Acueduct park but there is a stretch in the directions given connecting the two areas that is under construction and closed to all traffic so for a while I had to navigate on my own (a detour was not obvious). The acueductos are nice but I sort of wish spending more time on Via Appia since some of the streets in between were very heavily trafficked and kind of dangerous. But I enjoyed it very much. What would make it even better is if the bikes had a cellphone holder so I can just follow the map while biking and not have to stop every 5 mins to take my phone out of my pocket to look at the map. The attendant was very pleasant and knowledgeable 🫶
This was a highly positive experience and would recommend to anyone. Emanuele was very knowledgeable and gave a lot of insight to the area and history. Would request him again.
Metro then bus to get there. Missed 24 hr reservation window so arrived on spec as family of five. Friendly guy kitted us out with 5 great eBikes inc one for the 10yo. 75eu all in for two hours: great value, and really fun. Got lost but that was my fault; if you prematurely end the Google map route provided, restart it 'from your location' otherwise you won't get turn by turn instructions. Two hours got us down appia antica and round the acqueduct. Tip: reserve if you can, and take ID.
My son (12) and I rented e-bikes and road down the Via Appia. Very easy riding - bumpy at times but you can easily take the dirt path that parallels in many sections of you want smooth. A water fountain or 2 along the route to refill your water bottles. Lots of fun things to discover as you ride along, stop and take pictures of crumbling villas, arches, gates and walls from 2nd Century +. I highly recommend if want to get away from the sea of tourists and do something a little different. Tour operator spoke perfect English was very nice and accommodating making sure we were comfortable with the route and bikes. Cute little cafe there too if you want a drink or snack at the end.
We loved the opportunity to get outside the crushing crowds of Rome and see the ancient viaducts. The cobblestone roads made the ride a bit bumpy at times but the park was well worth it. The bike rental company provided a recommended route we could follow on our phones. The person who met us and showed us the bikes was very nice and was also eager to make sure we got the most of our time on the bikes.
Be prepared for a skinny bike seat with no cushion on an uneven historical bumpy uneven road. Better to walk this area on the Appian way. Employees are super nice and accommodating, but truly would not recommend this activity.
A very different way of getting to know Rome off the beaten path. Excellent tour and excellent guide. If you want to experience something different while in Rome this is the tour for you.
Staff at the rental were very pleasant and fun to interact with. Bikes worked well . But we the old drivers , not do much! But we did it ! Beautiful area away from most of the crowds in Rome Centro.
We hired the bikes in advance, online. The price is amazing, about 11 euros for three hours which was long enough for a reasonable distance. There’s a choice of bikes, I had a basic mtb my wife had something called a ‘ ladies city bike’. The route is incredible, following the original Roman road with mausoleums and funeral effigies along the way.
