Itinerary
The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli is located 4 km from Assisi. Inside the Basilica there is the Porziuncola Chapel; the place most loved by Saint Francis and where God granted him special graces. Initially, the Porziuncola was an ancient chapel, surrounded by a small portion of forest (hence perhaps the name) belonging to the Benedictines of the Monastery of S. Benedetto del Monte Subasio. Having remained abandoned for a long time, it was restored by Francesco who rented it from Abbot Teobaldo. After the death of the Saint, some permanent buildings arose around the church: the friars' choir, various small oratories and then a small convent. In the second half of the 1500s Pius V ordered the construction of a large basilica that would enclose and protect the Porziuncola and welcome the crowds of pilgrims who continually flocked there.
The Basilica of Santa Chiara is a religious building, built in neo-Romanesque style, located in Assisi. The basilica is among the most famous in Italy and one of the most beautiful in Umbria. The church marks not only the historic center of the city but also a significant place from an artistic and cultural point of view. The Basilica of Santa Chiara was built by the Benedictine monks, who had the desire to honor Santa Chiara, born Agnese in 1194 and died on 13 September 1253. Currently, together with the Porziuncola, the Eremo delle Carceri, the Chiesa Nuova and the Basilica of San Damiano, the Cathedral of San Rufino and obviously the Basilica of San Francesco, is one of the centers where the pilgrimage to Assisi is concentrated.
Splendid baroque residence with frescoed vaults at the beginning of the seventeenth century by Umbrian and Tuscan painters. Is the Pinacoteca Comunale di Assisi, inside they are a conspicuous group of medieval and Renaissance frescoes.
The Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi, the place that has preserved the mortal remains of the seraphic saint since 1230, is one of the most important places of worship in Italy and the world. In 2000, the basilica was included in the UNESCO world heritage list. The first stone of the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi was laid on 16 July 1228, just two days after Francis' death and the day after his proclamation as a saint by Pope Gregory IX. According to tradition, it was Francis himself who indicated exactly the place where he wished to be buried. The church represents one of the cornerstones of the spread of Gothic in Italy. In addition to being the burial place of Saint Francis, it assumed fundamental importance for the papacy, which saw the Franciscan order as a great ally for strengthening ties with the humblest and most popular classes. The construction of the basilica was started in 1228 by Pope Gregory IX and then consecrated in 1253 by Pope Innocent IV.
Discover the tomb of Carlo Acutis at Santa Maria Maggiore in Assisi. Explore the basilica, learn the inspiring story of this young saint, and experience a truly moving spiritual journey in the heart of Assisi.
The Dome of Orvieto is one of the most beautiful Italian cathedral, a masterpiece of the gothic architecture of the center of Italy. The magnificent building dominates the bluff up which Orvieto is located thanks to its size. In particular, the splendour of its facade is known all over the word, with its towers that reach a height of about 53 meters. Do not to forget the interior of the Dome, with wonderful decorations and frescoes made by some of the most great painters of the past, among which the famous Giudizio Universale of Luca Signorelli.
Explore Orvieto, one of the oldest cities in Italy, owes its origins to the Etruscan civilization: the first settlements date back to the 9th century BC. and they located themselves inside the tufaceous caves created in the massif on which the Umbrian town currently stands. Although Orvieto's fame is deeply intertwined with that of its magnificent cathedral, the city offers numerous historical-artistic ideas and itineraries, precisely by virtue of its ancient origins. Furthermore, perched on a cliff, Orvieto offers truly splendid panoramic views.

Wonderful day in Assisi & Orvieto with Antoinette. Punctual pickup and gave us great historical information throughout the duration of our tour. So pleasant to spend a day that we will never forget.
It was a wonderful tour of 2 beautiful Italian cities. Elizabeth our tour guide was excellent, very knowledgeable, personable, fun and informative. We asked lots of questions about the cities, the culture and history, the cathedrals, churches and the associated saints, and she had all the answers. Extremely knowledgeable. Our driver was great! I highly recommend this tour, Elizabeth our tour guide and Adam the driver. Well worth the money!
Monica, was our guide, and our van driver, I'm sorry, am unable to remember his name, was a very safe driver. We were picked up & returned by a van at our hotel, there were 2 other couples that were also in our group of 6 for the day. We went to Orvieto first to see their Duomo and learn of the history of this beautiful church, was given some free time to shop, then onto to Assisi where we stopped at the Papal Basilica of Mary of the Angels where Mass was in session. This basilica has a beautiful smaller church inside that St Francis built and died. Monica gave us permission to remain for Mass and receive Holy Communion which was very special for us. The day we were there was actually the 800th Anniversary of St Francis' passing, so there were lots of pilgrims in the area for this event. We were able to stop for a lovely lunch at a local restaurant . From there, we drove up to the top of the hill where there are serval other basilica where we were able to visit, St Clare, St Carlos Acutis, & St Francis. The countryside is absolutely stunning, and worth spending time! Monica is a wonderful guide and easy to talk with and answered questions easily.
We had a wonderful day trip from Rome to Assisi, and our entire family of four thoroughly enjoyed the experience! A big thank you to our fantastic tour guide, Elizabeth, and our driver, Emmanuel, for making the day so memorable. Both Elizabeth and Emmanuel were extremely friendly, welcoming, and professional. They picked us up from our hotel right on time, and Emmanuel drove us safely and comfortably throughout the entire journey in a very good vehicle. Elizabeth was an outstanding guide who explained everything in great detail, sharing fascinating information and insights at every stop. She also gave us helpful tips for each place we visited. What we particularly appreciated was the flexibility she offered, allowing us to explore each location at our own pace without feeling rushed. The whole experience felt almost like a private, personalised tour tailored to our family's interests and needs, rather than a standard group excursion. We could truly enjoy the beauty, history, and atmosphere of Assisi at our own pace. We highly recommend Elizabeth and Emmanuel to anyone planning a day trip from Rome to Assisi. Their friendliness, knowledge, professionalism, and attention to detail made this a truly special experience for our family. Thank you, Elizabeth and Emmanuel, for such a wonderful and memorable day! We couldn't have asked for a better experience. Highly recommended!
It’s excellent! We stopped to see a beautiful basilica on the way to Assisi, cathedral of the Assumption of Mary. There is enough time to see the main attractions in Assisi. We had lunch at a family run trattoria which was wonderful! On the way back to Rome, we stopped in Orvieto, a very pretty town, we visited the cathedral of the Assumption which is so beautiful on the outside with wonderful art inside! I highly recommend this tour
It was an excellent spiritual experience. Ellen and Massimiliano were great tour guides as well as Katia. They were very amicable and kind.
Excellent! Tour assistant and driver were both very pleasant. On time departure. Beautiful drive. Tour guide Marco in Assisi was very thorough and excellent topic knowledge. Tour went long because he seemed to really enjoy what he does. Tour assistant pointed things out on the way, but also didn’t just talk at us the whole time. I cannot recommend the group at Welcome Italy enough for their day excursions. Cars are very clean and comfortable. We had paid for a small group tour but it ended up being only us which made the tour even more personal.
Great tour with very knowledgeable tour leaders. Our tour guides gave us a ton of info on Assisi and helped us understand the importance of Assisi
A full day of visits to Orvieto and Assisi, with an excellent pair: Elisabeth and Giuseppe, and a special guide in Assisi, Marco. The day was well organized, and both Elisabeth and Marco are well informed about the historical significance and events around the places we visited. Highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of people and events which continue to have a significant influence on Catholic spirituality. Long day but well worth it.
Antonette and Pietro were a great team. She was a very knowledgeable guide who adjusted the pace to our interests and physical abilities.
My husband and I they really enjoyed the four Basilica tour with Dina as our tour guide and her colleague Stefano. Dina was very professional and knowledgeable all the subject matters. She gave us time to explore and pray and attend Mass at the Basilicas. It was truly a magnificent experience and a full day learning more about the history of our faith. We highly recommend Dina for an expert tour of the four Basilicas.
Welcome Italy was such a great way for my wife and I to experience a full trip in Rome. We actually had three separate excursions with them. First we went to Castel Gandolfo and Nemi. After a full three days in Rome, this was such a quiet and relaxing day. Antoinetta was so personable and made us feel at home, and our driver Pietro was great. The second day we traveled with Marie and Pino to Orvieto and Assisi. Again, both were professional and it felt like we were traveling with old friends by the end of the day. Our third day we traveled with Cascia and Spoleto. Another day of being immersed with a rich understanding of the history thanks to our guide, Juliana, and driver Flavio. Disclaimer here… my wife and I are Catholic, and from that perspective we felt so close to the history of the church. The guides did a great job of understanding that and catering to it each day. Their recommendations on restaurants while traveling were top notch as well. I cannot say enough good things about the days we spent with Welcome Italy and will absolutely be using their services on our next trip to Italy!
Our tour guide, Joseph, and driver Roberto had made our trip a wonderful one. It’s an experience we will share with our friends. Ciao ..
Wonderful way to spend a day in Umbria. Assisi and Orvieto are worth time to experience and this gives those with limited time the chance to do so.
The trip to Assisi and Orvieto was very enjoyable. Nicholas our guide and Luigi our driver were very able and informative.
Both Monika and Marco were excellent guides who not only told us the history of the places but also the stories behind myths , legends, truths. Also managed to help us book the specific restaurant we wanted to eat in Orvieto and time the tour accordingly.
Safe driving and knowledgeable guides especially in Assisi - Marco was very engaging and helped link the history of St Francis to various parts of history of the town. He made the most out of the less than ideal foggy weather and we still enjoyed the experience. Orvieto was beautiful , quaint and Monika our guide was accommodating enough to help us book a specific restaurant. She also introduced the best gelato in the town! All in all a great experience.
Since it’s a semi-private tour, you don’t just learn history—you absorb it. Orvieto gives you the warm-up, but Assisi? That’s the final exam. You’ll also get to know your fellow tourists extremely well. After 10–12 hours together, you’ll know their favorite snacks, random life stories, and possibly their biggest regrets. Even your tour guide and driver will get in on the jokes—because at that point, you’re basically a tiny traveling family. Our guide, Stayce, was super involved and encouraged us to ask every question that popped into our heads. And our driver Roberto—who not only looks like Jason Statham but drives like him—got us to and from each stop safely and in style. We had a great time! Oh, you'll also get a different but very knowledgeable tour guide when you get to Assisi. You can ask if you can stop in where Carlo Acutis is, maybe you'll get lucky, We did!
Marie and Natalia were fantastic as tour guide and driver respectively. Maria gave us a good histories and facts of the Umbria region. I sat up front next to Natalia and she talked a bit too about the electric vehicle we were in and how our trip will proceed. I like the fact that the electric vehicle was clean to us and to the environment - no smelly car fumes. Marie was very knowledgeable about her own church in Assisi and about the Duomo in Orvieto too. In Assisi, we appreciated the stories told by Marcos. He talked just about the right amount to give us the stories of Francis and Clare, the two major saints, and a bit about the new one of Assisi. The art work in Assisi were fine, not as intricate as the best for the Pope. Nevertheless the people of Assisi and Orvieto are rightfully proud of their fine places of worship. My family really enjoyed the histories and the sights, so intertwined with the histories.
This is an amazing private tour. We were picked up at our accommodations by Monica and Natalia, they were both very kind and accommodating throughout the tour. Orvieto is such a lovely town, and Assisi is amazing. We were so happy to go on this tour, even though the weather was warm we made the best of it and enjoyed the tour to the fullest, the AC is the car was very comfortable too, lol. We would totally recommend this tour. Happy travels!
Very nice tour! Marie and Natalia were very friendly, and shared their knowledge of these beautiful cities. The van was perfect for our family (5), and the drive was pleasant! They communicated very well with us, and provided great local recommendations for restaurants! This tour is a must do for anyone in Rome, 10/10 experience!
We enjoyed our trip to Assisi and Orvieto. Tour guide was pleasant informative. Be prepared- it’s a long day.
Monica our tour guide was amazing as was the Art Historian in Assisi. We greatly appreciated the Giotto's, cities and history. The lunch recommendation of pork sandwiches were gourmet. Adam the driver was very courteous. HIGHLY RECOMENDED.
This was a wonderful day trip and such a relaxing change from the hustle and bustle of Rome. Our guide, Marie, was professional, prompt and very accommodating when we wanted to amend our trip to spend the remainder of our day in Assisi. This was due in part to the riveting two-hour tour that our local guide, Chiara, provided. The knowledge and passion she shared pertaining to St. Francis and St. Clara were infectious!! As a result, we only wanted to spend more time in the basilica and the charming walled portion of the city of Assisi. I highly recommend this tour if you are interested in learning about St. Francis and the beautiful Basilica di San Francesco!
Our private tour day-trip to Assisi and Orvieto in late October, 2023 was perfect! My husband and I were picked up on time, in the early morning, at our hotel in Rome. Our driver, Giuseppe, was accompanied by our tour assistant, also name Giuseppe. Both men could not have been more friendly and considerate. We had an easy drive, first to Orvieto, and then to Assisi, making a rest stop along the way. Giuseppe described the countryside as we drove along and answered any/all of our questions. We asked to go to St. Patrick's Well; I highly recommend it! We saw the important sights of/around Orvieto, especially the magnificent Duomo. In Assisi, after a delicious local lunch, we stopped at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and viewed the Portiuncula inside. In the old town of Assisi, we met up with our local guide, Begonia, who was with us for 2 hours. We had an extensive description of the life of St. Francis and also of the beautiful town. We visited the chapel of St. Clare; the lower church (where St. Francis is buried), and the upper Basilica...all with time for prayer, and with extensive descriptions and interpretations from Begonia. For our comfort, our driver dropped us off the meet Begonia at the upper part of the town of Assisi, giving us a gentle walk down to the Basilica where the driver later picked us up at the bottom. This was a full-day tour, but we never felt rushed or hurried. A bonus: on the drive back to our hotel in the heart of Rome, Giuseppe played music by Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti as we drove through the enchanting Italian countryside. What a wonderful way to visit Assisi and Orvieto - well worth the investment!

This was outstanding. Just my wife and I, along with our guide and driver. We got a great tour of the Basilica of St. Francis, viewed his crypt, walked the city and were fortunate to have a great guide in Catrina. She was very much on top of her game. Knowledgeable, personable, patient, etc., etc. Took time to explain things and found us an excellent restaurant to have a relaxing lunch. The visit to Orvieto was more of the same. If you can take this long day tour, please do so. Worth the time and investment.

The most amazing, spiritual and spadeful trip I have ever done. The guide, the chauffeur the flexibility in time and schedule made my trip incredible... Thank you!!! Totally worthy.

An unforgettable experience in Orvieto and Assisi. We want to express our most sincere gratitude for the excellent excursion we enjoyed yesterday to Orvieto and Assisi. It was a truly wonderful day, in which we were able to discover charming landscapes, enjoy the cultural and artistic richness of these places, and, especially, experience the deep Franciscan spirituality that permeates Assisi. Every moment was accompanied by beauty, history, faith, and emotion. We also enjoyed the lunch very much, which completed an exceptional day. We want to make a very special mention of our guide, Elisabetta, who was simply spectacular. Her knowledge, warmth, friendliness, and way of conveying history, art, and spirituality made each visit take on a special meaning. Her attentive and close accompaniment made the excursion a much richer and more memorable experience. We also especially thank Roberto, our driver, for his professionalism, kindness, and for having accompanied us throughout the entire trip with such responsibility and cordiality. We thank the tourism company for the excellent organization and for providing us with such a well-coordinated excursion, taken care of in every detail. We take with us beautiful memories of Orvieto and, very especially, of Assisi, a place that allowed us not only to know, but also to feel and live the spirituality of Saint Francis. Congratulations on the excellent team and thank you very much for an unforgettable day!
That was a pending destination for me. It impacts what it can feel like walking its streets. The guides, Caterina and Maddalena, manage with their stories (those who put passion and professionalism), to be able to transport themselves in time and connect emotionally with the life of that city in the 12th century. Francis and his family, same Clara. Orvieto is also a beautiful city, worth touring. Unmissable.

. . Inolvidable .
