We are so glad we chose this mosaic workshop to experience a bit of ancient Roma! While we only had 3 hours to learn an ancient craft, we walked away with a profound appreciation for the work involved. Thank you both for your patience and assistance with our projects. We love our mosaics! 🇮🇹

Itinerary
The workshop begins with an introduction to the history and techniques of Roman mosaics. Afterwards, you’ll learn and practice the key principles of texture, composition, and marble tile cutting to create your very own mosaic to take home. Our goal is to teach the authentic methods of traditional Roman mosaic craftsmanship, so your artwork will meet the same standards and requirements as ancient pieces. By the end of the session, you’ll have created a personal mosaic — approximately 7” x 5” (about 18 x 13 cm) and weighing around 14 oz (about 400 g) — to take with you as a unique souvenir. This is a full immersion experience: you’ll work in a real mosaic studio and use professional tools. For safety reasons, we recommend this activity for participants aged 12 and above.

Everything I hoped for. Distinctively Roman without being gimmicky. Felt like I was learning about a real art (even if I wasn’t actually a real artist…). Just the right amount of difficult that I gives you new appreciation for the craft and pride in what you did. You probably need good grip strength for this one.
Workshop was fun and a cool way to learn the process of making mosaic art. Artist/teacher has a quirky personality which was fun. Really makes you appreciate how intense mosaic artists are
This class is great for those who truly appreciate art, as well as those who have a slight interest but not a deep understanding, as the team there did a fantastic job educating us on the history of mosaics, to modern use. My husband was skeptical about the class, as he does not enjoy "artistic" activities, but he had a great time, as well as our seven year old. I understand why in general, they recommend 10 years and older to attend the class, but if you have a curious and patient child, this is an excellent option. You can hear and see the passion of the staff, and they are truly just lovely people. I highly recommend.
The workshop was so wonderful. Giulia and Alex took us through traditional Roman mosaic making. They explained its history, techniques and artistry. We were each able to create our own mosaic and were given plenty of options of what to create. It was a fun and welcoming environment. We were able to ask questions and be given guidance as we were creating. It was a highlight of our trip to Rome.
This class was very informative. There is so much work and it needs to be appreciated. It was a great class.
Wonderful experience making mosaics with Giulia. I came with my SIL who only speaks Hungarian and my two adult sons, one of whom is autistic and noticeably different. I mention this only because Giulia gave him extra instruction and encouragement without this being shared with her. I used Google translate to translate Giulia’s instructions into Hungarian for my SIL so she could follow along. The consensus from the group was that everyone had a wonderful time and learned something as well. My SIL said this activity was her favorite of all we did in Rome. Studio Cassio also let me add my SIL and other son the day before even though the workshop was technically full (could not purchase more tickets). We are all happy to have our personalized souvenirs from Rome!
Went with my partner to a mosaic workshop for a more unique and crafty experience on our trip to Rome and thought it was amazing! Our hosts were warm and welcoming, and showed their expertise as they walked through the Roman methods for making mosaics. They were also so helpful at guiding us when we were lost or unsure on how to make the design work. Really pleased with the outcome and highly recommend it as part of any trip to Rome.
Recently visited as part of our second trip to Rome and found the mosaic workshop to be everything we'd hoped it would be. The workshop was around 2.5hr to 3hrs and had our hosts walk us through the types of mosaic making and the technique we'd be adopting before getting started. We then picked out a template to make (I think one couple had a specific request which was accommodated too) and used a number of different coloured tiles to make our mosaic. The hosts were hands on, welcoming and very helpful throughout so big thanks to them 🙂 The other groups in the room also gave it a great atmosphere. Highly recommend as something to do that's quite unique to Rome and crafty.
I found the mosaic workshop surprisingly calming and absorbing. It encouraged me to slow down and really consider the shapes, height, and intricate patterns as the mosaic gradually came together. Alexander and Giulia were wonderful guides, gently instructing and assisting throughout the process while allowing plenty of space for creativity. I also really enjoyed learning about the long and fascinating history of mosaics — it added another dimension to the experience. A relaxing, creative, and very interesting workshop that I would highly recommend.
A lovely few hours trying something new and learning about the Roman history of mosaics. Highly recommend if you like crafts! Giulia is so knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming.
Julia took time and energy to inform us of the history of mosaics and showed us samples both ancient and modern. She and the other workers in shop helped us with our little projects and even offered us something to drink. This was the best activity we have been to. 10 stars all around.
I’ve eyed this workshop on past trips to Rome, and I’m happy to have now taken the workshop. A nice break from the afternoon heat, Alex and co. led an engaging session that touched on the history of mosaic craftsmanship and their studio’s contributions. What better souvenir to bring home than a marble mosaic you personally made? I would recommend this to anyone going to Rome, whether the first or the next time, as having tried to make the art myself gives a new appreciation to its mastery.
This was a fun and educational experience, also something a bit different than the usual. Easy to find, very near train station.
Awesome idea for something to do that’s not touring churches or ruins. Great family experience. My daughter and I did the class today. It’s small and intimate so you can chat with the teachers and other participants. We love the pieces we made and will definitely try another class when we return to Rome.
This was such a fun and unique experience! The class gave me a great appreciation for the time, skill, and patience that goes into creating mosaic art. It was definitely challenging, but that’s what made it so rewarding. Giulia and Alex were both incredibly kind, patient, and helpful throughout the class. As a solo traveler, I highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for something creative to do. It’s also a great way to ease the anxiety that can sometimes come with traveling alone. I was pretty happy with my first mosaic, and I already know I’ll be booking this class again the next time I’m in Rome!
What an incredible way to spend time in Rome. Alex was fantastic as an instructor, giving both the history and art of mosaic making. He is also very funny. We had the best time creating our own art, and he was very helpful in setting it up and encouraging us to do the work ourselves. We did this early into our trips, and it also helped us look for and appreciate the mosaics we saw on our visits. Took home a wonderful memory!
This is a really fun non-typical thing to do in Rome. We ended up showing up a different time than what we had booked to ask if they could make room for us and they did which was wonderful. The class was really fun and the instructors were great! Highly recommend doing this. 😁
Really nice Ancient Tile mosaic class! We had a great time, met wonderful people, and came home with a hand-made souvenir.
A fantastic experience, me and my adult daughter attended this workshop together and we absolutely loved it. Giulia, Alex and Leonora were very friendly, helpful and so patient. The class was so much fun, we each got to make our own mosaic which we got to keep and bring home at the end of the class. The group size was small which was good. The studio was lovely, filled with the wonderful mosaics, and air-conditioned too. Would 100% recommend the workshop!!
Our family of 4 including two teenage boys (age 15 and 17) attended the mosaic class in Rome and had a fantastic time! The instructors, Alex and Julia were the BEST! They were very experienced and knowledgeable, but also fun! We left with our own mosaics as a souvenir to always cherish. I highly recommend this experience if you are in Rome on vacation.
Great learning about different Mosaic techniques with Alex and Julia, as well as a hands on experience making my own unique mosaic. I have a new appreciation for the amazing mosaics that I see throughout my travels.
This was a fantastic afternoon! We learned about different mosaic techniques, micro mosaic, and stone, glass, and gold/metallic materials. Then we tried our hand with expert help to guide us. An informative and fun experience that provides insight into a classic Roman art form.
We had a wonderful time. Julia was a great host and instructor. We enjoyed learning a little about mosaic history and making our own. Thanks!
What a fun way to spend an afternoon. Julia was an excellent teacher: very knowledgeable, patient, and helpful. We had lots of options for designs and plenty of time to create our own. The following day we visited the Baths of Caracalla, and we definitely had a much greater appreciation for all the mosaics on display there!
I learned a lot about the ancient art of mosaics! The teacher was so patient and helpful as I was certainly the remedial student in our group of four. She offered assistance without making me feel incompetent which I greatly appreciated! The other talented mosaic artists in the shop also shared their perspectives and love of the art. Did you know creating mosaics is beneficial and comforting for those who on a grief journey. I have a lovely piece of Roman art work to hang in my home.
This was awesome! Loved every minute. Made a great mosaic after receiving instructions. They even ran across the street and got us coffee while we worked! See pics below
A truly lovely experience, we learned so much and have more appreciation for the mosaics in churches now
This was absolutely fantastic! A highlight of our trip to Rome. Instructors were very friendly and we learned a lot - not only how to make the mosaics we did but generally about the craft, its history, materials and more. Allowed putting in perspective some of the ancient mosaics we saw at different sites in Rome. Free coffee during the workshop was a nice touch, and the studio is in a cute neighborhood with great gelato, restaurants and famous church (St Peter in Chains) around the corner. Highly recommended! I want to make more mosaic :)
WOW. This was an amazing experience, especially for someone who was brand new to this craft but fascinated with all the mosaics and stones around the city! I cannot say enough good things about my session with Giulia and Uliana. They were wonderful teachers, and I learned so much—and even walked away with suggestions of where to see more mosaics around Rome. I think it's really neat how connected they are to restorations and history, too. Cannot recommend this enough.
Fascinating! Challenging in the best way! Excellent teacher with deep knowledge of mosaics. I learned a lot while having fun making my own Roman fragment. My 15-year-old granddaughter was a star!
My daughter and I spent a lovely afternoon learning about the art of making mosaics and then had the opportunity to each make one for ourself. Alex and Julia were amazing instructors and we really had such a lovely time. It was a great way to break up a day of sight seeing. The studio is in a fun and vibrant part of town.
A fantastic experience! The staff at Studio Cassio are helpful, friendly, and very informative. I would absolutely recommend and would love to go back if I have the chance on my next trip! Looking forward to using my new skills to make a frame for my piece. Thank you for a lovely workshop!
My husband and I had a blast! Such a unique experience! We wish we would have done it at the beginning of our trip so we could have marveled at the mosaics in the museums more.
If you want a memorable experience in Rome, learn about the art of mosaic and bring home a handmade souvenir. The staff will teach you about the ancient craft of mosaic-making as they help you create your own piece, all in just two days in the studio.
Wonderful experience and a real authentic souvenir to take home. I highly recommend to all. Special highlight being the kind and informative tutors, taking us through the history of mosaics. Thanks again
Eleonora and Renato are both really kind and passionate, which makes this workshop very friendly. I recommend 100% and will probably come back for another workshop on micromosaic! You will learn about the different techniques of mosaic and make your own, with some advice. It was such a nice experience, as a solo traveller! I recommend 100% and will probably come back for another workshop on micromosaic!
This was a truly unique, fun and memorable experience. We loved learning the history of mosaics and then creating one of our own. We left inspired to continue to create more on our own when we get home. The artists were friendly and encouraging. A true delight!
I went with my daughter and neither one of us has ever done something like this and the artist there were very patient with everyone.
The instructors were fabulous and explained things really well. It was a lot of fun to try something new!
I had an amazing time at the workshop! The atmosphere was fantastic, warm, and inspiring. The instructors were incredibly helpful and friendly, making sure everyone felt welcome and supported. We also learned a lot of fascinating facts about mosaics and their history. What made the experience even more special was that the studio is usually involved in serious restoration work of historical mosaics, which added a real sense of authenticity. I had so much fun and left with a beautiful souvenir I made myself. Highly recommended! Thanks!
Friendly, welcoming hosts! Very engaging. Had a wonderful time with our twin 13 year old boys. Everyone loved the experience and end product! Close to the coliseum. A great way to spend the afternoon in an air conditioned art studio. Everyone spoke English very well!
Ok. THIS is the experience you want to have in Rome to cool off in the AC and and spend some time making your own keepsake. We now have so much understanding for the puzzle making abilities and craftsmanship of making mosaic masterpieces. It is incredibly therapeutic as well. We popped in for lunch across the street and it was delish! Enjoy!!
The best experience we’ve had in Rome. The instructors were knowledgeable, patient and personable. The mosaics turned out great! I highly recommend this experience!!!
Truly, truly incredible experience! The entire family loved it and got into it! The staff artists are so knowledgeable and helpful! And you leave with a special piece of Rome and a newfound respect for mosaics!!
We loved it!!!! It was my daughter (13yrs) favorite activity in Rome so far. Thank you for teaching us the history, art and technique of ancient mosaic - we might have found a new hobby when we return home!
This was a fun experience, we did the micro mosaic class the day before so it was interesting to see the difference in the styles. They went over the history and process of mosaics and we got to pick from a dozen or so patterns from ancient mosaics they have worked on in pompey to do for our own project. We got to pick from several colors of squares and they helped us make them look great!
This mosaics class was so much fun! It was in a great location. It was neat to see the master mosaic artist working in his studio. He created the famous Imagine floor in Central Park NY! The instructor gave us a brief history and explanation of materials. Adequate materials were provided and the instructor helped a lot. It was a nice touch that they provided cappuccinos and cookies. My friend and I were happy with our creations and enjoyed seeing the work hanging in the studio. We gained new appreciation for all the mosaics we saw in the churches and museums. Very inspiring! Great experience in Rome!
Go go go! This was not your typical “art” class. The instructor has his masters in mosaic and is very passionate about mosaic, the history of mosaic and the restoration process. Really great way to get off our feet during our busy Rome vacation.
I'm not really into artsy stuff, but somehow I really dig Roman mosaics. I wanted to learn more about it, and this workshop very much delivered. We got a short historical intro to it and then got to try our hands at a hands-on project. I was very much outside my comfort zone, but the hosts were very well prepared and they were just such nice people, it all worked out very well and we had a great time and got to take back our own hand made Roman mosaics that I will very much treasure.
