We stayed at the Golden Tulip as part of a tour group. The location is genuinely one of its strongest assets, and the breakfast offering was a pleasant surprise; a solid spread of warm and cold dishes that compares decently for an independent property. The room, however, was a different matter. While it was hygenic and somewhat spacious (sleeping area is large, but the toilet is cramped with limited leg room), and the bed was functional, the air conditioning was not working during summer, leaving the room at >28°C / >82°F through the night. Air conditioning is apparently centrally managed and guests have minimal control. Changing the fan speed resulted in the temperature lowering from >29 to >28°C. We raised the issue with the front desk on several calls or in person. Staff were curt in their responses and unable to resolve the problem promptly, though they did eventually offer a replacement room after several exchanges. That's noted, and appreciated, but it took more persistence than it should have at this tier. At EUR 350–450 per night (even accounting for prices in Rome), there's a reasonable expectation that basic infrastructure works, and that when it doesn't, the response is swift. Neither was the case here. The location and breakfast hold up; the room conditions and the effort required to address them do not. For the rate, I'd expect more. For what was delivered, I'd look elsewhere.
Great service, and just about everybody spoke fluent English. Smaller lobby, but well appointed. Amazing continental breakfast. Rooms are a little small, because it is an older building. Bathroom just large enough. Shower was super small, like literally had a hard time opening the doors to get in. Could not set the room ac low enough - always felt a bit stuffy.
The only positive thing about this hotel is the location. Unfortunately, there are much better options nearby, and I wish I had done more research before booking. This hotel was recommended through our cruise line NCL, and choosing it ended up being a mistake. This is not like any "Four Star" hotel I've ever stayed in. Our room stayed between 27–29°C (80–84°F) for our entire stay, despite repeated requests to the front desk to lower the AC since room temperatures are CENTRALLY CONTROLLED by the front desk. After countless trips downstairs, we were continually dismissed and told to “give it time.” At one point, they even sent a bellboy to our family’s room to inspect the thermostat as if they thought we were exaggerating. The poor kid looked uncomfortable even having to come up there, so we simply took a picture and didn’t make him come inside. After seeing another guest with a fan, I finally asked if one was available and they accommodated the request. Considering I had repeatedly explained I was struggling with the heat for health reasons, I’m not sure why this was never offered sooner. It wasn’t until the second day that staff finally acknowledged the room was excessively hot and admitted the AC system was not functioning properly. By then, the only solution offered was moving us late in the evening when we were leaving for the airport at 4 AM. What made the experience even worse was how rude we were treated throughout our stay. We had multiple uncomfortable interactions where we felt dismissed and mocked rather than helped. I’ve traveled internationally for decades and have never felt compelled to leave a review like this. Sadly, this experience ruined what was supposed to be our only full day in Rome.
Spacious, Clean Rooms and Excellent Location Near Termini We stayed in a spacious triple room that was very comfortable and clean. The bathroom has an exhaust fan, which is especially helpful in the winter. Breakfast is well served, with a great variety of options. The staff are kind and courteous, always attentive and willing to help with anything we needed. Housekeeping service is also efficient. The location is excellent, close to Termini station, with many restaurants nearby, including the hotel’s own restaurant and.
