Monica was an amazing guide. She was incredibly passionate, informative, and really fun to be around! We had a wonderful time talking to her. All of the logistics were as described as well. This is a do not miss tour and was easily one of the highlights of our trip. It is a stunningly beautiful place and must be seen to be believed. We got a little unlucky with the weather and it rained all day, but I would do it again under those circumstances in a heartbeat!
Wonderful morning at Burle Marx (the rain meant that it was lovely and quiet. The greens of the trees and plants were even more vibrant). Fascinating to also see his home and art collections. With all of Monica’s knowledge it gave as a better understanding of the man and his genesis work. There were a number of languages in our group and Monica was able to jump from one language to another enabling everyone to get some much from the day .
The guide was excellent and knowledgeable. These gardens are worth visiting.
Amazing discovery of the Roberto Burle Marx Sitio: lots of cultural stuff. The best comes because of Dario, the top ranking kind of a guide: utmost skilled as nice. You have to deal with him.
The site is one of the world's greatest gardens and one of the best house museums I have seen. The guide shared information about Brazilian culture, the city of Rio, and the Sítio Burle Marx and was able to translate the on-site group guide's Portuguese discussion of the property into English for me to understand better. In addition to being fluent in several languages (Spanish, French, Italian, as well as Portuguese and English), he was cordial, intelligent, and kept our little group in order despite misbehavior from the other two tour customers.
Advertised as a group tour, but the transport provided was a compact car. We were two people crammed in the back with a third client for a 1 hour trip, each way. Very incomfortable. No notice the day before of the transport nor that we were traveling in a car intended for private tours, and not a van as is the norm for group tours. Carioca Tours did nothing to resolve the situation, did not provide an alternate vehicle suitable for this type of tour. Did not answer our calls but responded by text with the excuse that it is an automated number and can not take calls, however texts were responsed by a person on the same number. The tour guide Renato was very unprofessional and did not handle the situation in a respectful way. Zero attention to the clients comfort. Stopped at a gas station and very aggressively threatened to abandoned us in the middle of nowhere. When we refused to get out of the car he slammed the door on us. Avoid this tour, it is overpriced for what it is. Get an uber for $10-$15, and pay the entrance at Sitio which is about $3-$4. This is an overpriced transport to Sitio, the tour guide did not provide any service. The tour at Sitio is provided by one of Sitio’s guides. We ended up taking an Uber back to Rio. Do not book tours with Carioca Tours, terrible service and lack of attention to paying clients needs.
The tour is not even a tour. The guide is just a driver and the tour is only in English through the museum guy. I am absolutely disappointed with this tour.
This was an excellent tour with Monica B. and Alan (our driver). It ended up being a private tour with just my husband and I as tourists. We couldn't praise her enough for her professionalism, her deep knowledge of her subjects, and her warmth and personal charm. Monica is a very knowledgeable guide, and took excellent care of us the whole way, even pointing out locations of interest along the way to the Sitío. She translated the Protuguese site guides' remarks for us, but she was also able to give us a lot of background on Roberto Burle Marx as a person, how he used his home, and some of his background. The gardens are spectacular, the landscape architecture is inspirational for anyone who gardens or just enjoys a pleasure garden. The nation of Brasil has done an excellent job of maintaining the site as it was meant to be. It was a unique and enriching experience for us in our exploration of Rio de Janeiro.
We really enjoyed the tour to Sítio Burle Marx!! He was not only an accomplished landscape designer, but also a very talented painter and sculptor. The sitio contains numerous plants from all over the word, and various settings where he experimented with different characteristics for growing the plants. In his home, where he lived until his death in 1994, contains numerous paintings by Burle Marx as well as from other artists. Our tour guide Monica was also excellent. She was very knowledgeable of Burle Marx’ life as well as his many accomplishments. Monica is very friendly, and in addition to sharing her knowledge about Burle Marx and Rio de Janeiro, provided great conversation as we explored the sitio. Overall, a very nice afternoon if Rio>
Tour company RiO Carioca failed to arrive at pick time although they were paid in advance. No response from them about refunds. The hotel we were staying in provided transport and tickets but we missed half the tour
The driver / guide from the hotel was excellent company and spoke good English. Also the guide at Burle Marx's sitio was very informative and an excellent English speaker. All organised very well and excellent value for money.
the house and gardens were super and also to see the artists working areas plus his collection of all manner of things
My trip with Cariocas was cancelled by them less than 24 hours before scheduled visit. They said next available date was in four days time. I requested to reschedule if possible. Less than 14 hours before visit still awaited response from Cariocas . When asked they were unable to advise about either the visit or repayment. It would appear that booking money is taken one, two or more weeks prior to tour but Cariocas do not buy any requisite tickets until a day before scheduled visit. No financial outlet by them , whilst money paid earns interest. When you ask about reimbursement the response - let me have your booking reference. At best this is utter incompetence, or worse a scam. Unreliable service.
Great guide, interesting background information as travelled to the Sitio, great location, local guide also excellent and very interesting visit of plantings and artworks combined. A highlight of Rio, will visit again next time we are here
We found this garden and presentation of Roberto Burle Marx fantastic and beyond our expectations. Even on a rainy day its was exquisite to walk the gardens and hear off his wife crammed with so much achievement. The guide we had Matthew was really knowledgeable and interesting.
If you love design or are looking a one of a kind Rio experience this is the tour for you! The house, studio and grounds were hands down spectacular- a highlight of our 11-day trip. Monica, our guide, couldn’t have been more gracious or knowledgeable. You could tell she loved this special place, and her enthusiasm was infectious and made for great story telling. We quickly became immersed in Burle Marx’s philosophy and grew to understand how his approach to landscape design was revolutionary. From what I see, not that many people book this tour and I can’t understand why. It’s just a short drive outside the city and the walk through the property is serene, stunning, and helps give context to the overall evolution of Rio as a city. Don’t hesitate to book with Monica today!
Our tour guide went beyond and above to make this tour memorable gift us. We recommend it for art and nature lovers.
First, the gardens were beautiful! We learned so much about native and non native plants. The staff was friendly and they knew their stuff! This was the one tour where I took the most photos! It was stunning! The bonus was that we received door to door service. Our driver was so kind and was fun to ride with.
Had a wonderful tour with Leandro. He picked me up on time. Drove carefully to the mist beautiful garden in Rio: Sitio Burle Marx. The garden tour was great! We had great lunch after in a local restaurant that Leandro knew. And he kindly drove back touring the coastline. Leandro too the extra time to make this experience unforgettable beautiful. If you are looking for this tour, ask for Leandro!!!! He is amazing
Monica provided an excellent tour and experience to sitio Roberto Burle Marx. The studio and gardens only opened up again last week and Monica made sure we saw all of the highlights of the spectacular grounds and understood the work of this great artist. She also built in a side-trip to Barra de Guaratiba and stopped off a local dairy and caixaca distillery. It was a wonderful afternoon and only possible because we used this service. Highly recommended!
Even though it is a little bit far from Rio, it is so worth it. My husband is a landscape architect and Roberto Burle Marx is his hero. Once we started the tour, I understood why. He was an amazing artist on different mediums. The collection of plants is overwhelming. I would recommend going during the morning when is not that hot yet, it is really humid still but, I cannot imagine dealing with the humidity and the heat at 1 PM.
I only went on the tour because my husband is a landscape designer and a big Burle Marx fan wanted to go. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself interested, educated, and amazed by many facets of Burle Marx life and creativity. His impact on the world of design and especially Brazillian landscape architecture will not be forgotten. Well worth the time if you are visiting Rio for more than a couple days.

Being a landscape architect, this tour was really cool. It was great to get out of the city and visit this home/botanical garden. 40 acres of plant collections and some nice structures Burle Marx's house and party pavilion. The only downer was that the tour was given in Portuguese and our English speaking tour guide couldn't keep up with the translation.

Beautiful tour for cultural interest and nature discovery. Perfectly organized by the agency, optimizing travel and visit times, the tour to the Burle Marx site is truly not to be missed if you have an interest in architecture, art, and landscape. Organized in a very punctual manner, in addition to a very good and nice driver, we were lucky enough to have a special guide with us again, Monica, who not only introduced us to the site but enriched us culturally on many aspects of Brazil. Always very well-prepared, attentive to every detail, with a great culture and passion that she generously expresses in her work, Monica answered all our curiosities and requests. We are truly grateful for this beautiful experience!
One of the most beautiful parks in the region All with a guide who listens and who accompanies us during the visit to translate us
A big surprise. The Roberto Burle Marx park is a jewel about 45 minutes drive from Rio. It is a contemplative place of great charm. An immersion in tropical nature full of plants, shrubs and brushstrokes of bright colours. Accompanied by the guide, Monica, very good, very competent and pleasant. Compliments. We were all thrilled with it. We have discovered a place that will accompany us emotionally for a long time. Definitely recommended.
We made this visit with Monica very cultivated and who gave us explanations about the life of burle marx but also about all kinds of plants encountered with great professionalism and kindness
The tour was very good and our guide Monica Bertazzolo was excellent, as well as their knowledge. The place is charming and we have already arrived there equipped with a prior knowledge about the life and productions of the greatest Brazilian landscaping artist.
Monica's great. She knows the place and the work of Burle Marx. On the way we had an exciting introduction to the city of Rio, its geography, its neighborhoods.
Excellent walk to the Burle Marx Site. Monica our guide, excellent too!! Very good vibes, he was explaining us throughout the tour, not only of Burle Marx, but also of Rio. Highly recommended.. !! The driver Eduardo too!! Thank you very much Monica!!!!
Very interesting tour on the site of De la maison de Roberto Burle Marx. An ideal solution as appointment requests have exploded since the World Heritage site was inscribed. The place is exciting and shows a creator at work in all areas: garden but also architecture, painting, ceramics. A house of rare aesthetic quality where every detail is imagined in an original - very creative way. Colors shapes. A delight. Organization ok with pick up at the hotel. A guide, Monica, enthusiastic, documented and ultra available. Many thanks to her for this privileged morning and discovery.
